The austerity policies implemented in Spain during the years of the «great recession» (2008-2014) have had diverse effects on the socio-economic and vital conditions of children, young people and the elderly. In particular, the agenda of public policies and social spending applied during the crisis increased inequality between these social groups, privileging the interests of the adult population and the elderly, and calling into question7 the principle of inter-generational solidarity on which our familistic welfare system. In this article we describe this phenomenon and highlight the dominant narratives formulated by the main political actors when defining the rules of eligibility of the beneficiaries of public policies and attending to the specific needs of each age group. The statistical and documentary evidence collected points to the convenience of reflecting on the foundations of the inter-generational pact that organizes the redistribution of public resources in our country and that must ensure the sustainability of our social protection system. AGE distribution , *AGE differences , *AGE groups , *COVID-19 - Abstract
Objective. Relate standardized age distribution of COVID-19 deaths in 22 countries in the Americas and Europe to different indicators of population characteristics and health systems. Methods. Distributions of COVID-19 deaths by age group in 22 countries of the Americas and Europe were standardized based on the age pyramid of the world's population. Correlations were calculated between the standardized proportion of people aged <60 years among the deceased and each of six indicators. Results. Standardization based on the world age pyramid revealed considerable differences in age distribution among countries; the proportion of people aged <60 years was higher in Latin America and the United States than in Canada or Western Europe. The standardized proportion of people aged <60 years among persons who died of COVID-19 is strongly correlated to the existence of universal quality medical coverage (r=-0.92, p<0.01). This relationship remained significant after being adjusted for the other indicators. Conclusion. We propose that weaknesses in medical coverage of the population may have created higher case-fatality in populations aged <60 years in Latin America and the United States. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Although available social relations are a basic resource for the promotion of health and wellbeing, their mere presence is not necessarily a protective factor, since relationships with problems or deficiencies are themselves major sources of stress. Deficiencies - whether real or perceived - lead to a negative feeling of loneliness, commonly associated with symptoms of depression and anxiety, as well as feelings of dissatisfaction and unhappiness which, in turn, affect health in general. In this context, the purpose of the present study was to identify the impact of loneliness on health, and to explore possible differences in these variables by age and schooling. A sample of 388 heterosexual participants from Mexico City, aged 17 to 62 years and a minimum of secondary schooling took two questionnaires: one to assess loneliness in the couple, and the SF-36 Health Survey. The main results show that experiencing feelings of emptiness is associated with less vitality, more emotional problems that affect the interest in living with other people and difficulties in carrying out daily activities. Regarding age differences, mature participants (45-62 years) reported experiencing more health problems followed by adults (31-44) and younger participants (17-30). Regarding schooling, those with higher educational level (bachelor's degree) reported more feelings of emptiness as well as more health problems related to physical and role functioning. - Abstract
Objective: To determine the ranges of total protein values in cerebrospinal fluid by age groups and their relationship with sex. Methods: A descriptive analytical study was carried out. Total protein concentration was quantified (Lowry's procedure) in 930 cerebrospinal fluid samples with an electrophoretic pattern of normal cerebrospinal fluid, evaluated at the Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery over a period of 11 years. Sex and age of the patients were recorded. The mean, median, minimum and maximum, standard deviation and 25-75 percentile of the concentration of total proteins in cerebrospinal fluid by age group were reported. Student's t-statistic was used for comparisons between adults and children and between sexes; ANOVA test was used to compare means of total proteins between age groups; Kruskal Wallis test determined differences between adult-age groups, and Mann-Whitney test analyzed the differences between sexes by age groups. The level of significance was p< 0.05. Results: Reference values of total proteins in cerebrospinal fluid were determined by age groups; there were significant differences among them. The information previously reported on the association between higher values of total proteins in cerebrospinal fluid with advancing age was confirmed, with the exception of patients< 1 year. The total proteins of younger adults showed significant differences with respect to those of older. Higher values were evidenced in male adults; statistical significance was at the ages ranging 20 to 49 years. Conclusions: Age and sex are essential in the analysis and interpretation of total protein values in cerebrospinal fluid. However, age and sex stratification is more relevant in patients older than 50 years. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

NEUROPSYCHOLOGICAL tests , *FACTOR analysis , *SHORT-term memory , *INFORMATION processing , *AGE groups - Abstract
Information processing speed (IPS) is a general capacity of the cognitive system, defined as the sum of the times in which a piece of information is perceived, processed, and a response is prepared and executed. The main goal of this study was to investigate the influence of IPS on performance in classical neuropsychological tests (CNT). Methods: Eleven CNT were applied to an Argentine sample of participants between 15 and 70 years old (M = 40, SD = 17.1, 163 women, 96 men). Results: By means of an exploratory factorial analysis three explanatory factors of performance in the CNT were extracted. These factors were interpreted as 1) cognitive shifting based on motor perception with short-term memory load, 2) semantic processing, and 3) IPS. Significant differences were found between age groups for the influence of each factor on performance. In addition, multiple regression models indicated that the IPS was a significant predictor of performance in nine CNT. Conclusions: These results have implications for the use, design and interpretation of CNT. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SATISFACTION , *INSTITUTIONAL environment , *WORK environment , *MEDICAL personnel , *JOB satisfaction , *AGE groups - Abstract
Life satisfaction is a predictor of physical diseases with a consistent relation to the age and labor satisfaction, though the relation to the age is still controversial. This work evaluates the impact of the organizational climate and the labor satisfaction on the life satisfaction of 623 workers at a hospital in southern Chile according to their age (20-29; 30-39; 40-49; 50-59 years old). It is done based on a model of structural equations. It was found that the organizational climate –as mediated by the labor satisfaction– has a direct and positive impact on the life satisfaction of health workers, which enhances as they get older and mostly in the range from 40 to 59 years old. A management intended to optimize the organizational climate as well as the labor satisfaction will contribute to enhance the health worker's well-being at the working site and, consequently, in his/her life satisfaction in general. - Abstract
Background: Based on international epidemiology, some laryngeal diseases could be more frequent at certain ages. The objective was to describe endoscopic findings in patients through distinct decades of age in a laryngoscopy facility. Methods: retrospective and descriptive study; clinical and endoscopic records were collected from 1493 procedures performed between 2009 and 2015, and organized in five groups of age for analysis. Differences among them were analyzed by chi squared and ANOVA. Results: 70% of patients reported dysphonia as a main symptom; 24% of subjects were referred with cancer diagnosis and just 7% of them, showed findings related to malignancy; on the other hand, cancer suspicion increased in direct proportion with age (p < 0.0001); inespecific inflammation and other benign endoscopic manifestations (e.g. vocal fold paralysis, subglotic stenosis and nodules) represented 80% of the whole findings; 14% of the procedures were reported as normal. Glottic and supraglottic structures were the two regions affected by malignancy; this finding was directly related to advanced age, particularly in patients of 70 years of age or older. Finally, subglottic stenosis was observed in patients younger than 50 years of age (p < 0.0001). Conclusion: Causes of laryngeal diseases are different in individuals according to their age. Carcinoma was more prevalent in adults of 70 years of age or older. Benign causes were secondary to inflammatory and functional conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Objective: Determine hemoglobin and hematocrit values in blood donors between the years 2000-2009. Methods: An observational descriptive study with a sample of 103,690 donors composed of men and women adults who voluntarily donated blood in the blood bank of the Hospital Pablo Tobón Uribe (HPTU). The variables evaluated in the study were sex, age, hemoglobin and hematocrit. Results: The 50,7% of the sample composed of males, 90,7% of donors living in Medellin, the average age was 32,5 (±11,5) years. In men the average hemoglobin and hematocrit was 15,96g/dl (±1,11) and 46,93% (±3,27), respectively, in women the average was 14,10 g/dl (±1,00) and 41,64% (±2,96) respectively. Conclusions: The hemoglobin and hematocrit values are determined by variables such as sex, age, ancestry and height above sea level, therefore it is important that each population know about their values in relation to their own determinants. CHILDREN , *CHILD behavior , *CHILD psychology , *HUMAN life cycle , *TECHNOLOGICAL innovations , *GLOBALIZATION , *SOCIOCULTURAL factors - Abstract
In this work, we analyze childhood, taking into account certain variables that we suppose have impacted on the profound changes of the current socio-cultural context Some of the aspects to consider, in order to examine the consequences of the changes in child's subjective constitution are the following: plays and toys, the place of parental figures, and the constant advance of the new information and communication technologies. The concept of childhood as a life stage as well as the real childhood underwent important changes in the second half of the 20th century, due to globalization, profound social crises, new technologies, the rules of the market and the fall of values leading to different representations of the human being. This work attempts to give an answer to the question: are we facing a new childhood? This new kind of bonds of more freedom and horizontality between parents and children, adults and children seems to have generated new developments but paradoxically, at the same time new conflicts. DIET , *CHILD nutrition , *PRESCHOOL children , *HEALTH of school children , *ADOLESCENCE , *HUMAN growth , *FOOD preferences in children , *EATING disorders - Abstract
At the end of the infant stage, children experiment a progressive development which is linked to the establishment of feeding habits. This period of life, since preschool until the pre-puberty stage is characterized by a slow growth with an annual increase of 2 to 3 kg of weight and 5 to 8 cm of stature. As velocity of growth decreases during this period of life, the appetite also diminishes and food intake seems to be irregular or unpredictable. Parents frequently express their worries about the limited variety of ingested foods, the lost of time, distraction and scarce consumption of vegetables and meat, and the preference for candies and sweet foods. In the second spurt of growth, during puberty, the demand of nutrients increase again along with appetite, and eventually some eating disorders might appear as a product of psycho-affective problems in the family and social environment. Personnel on charge (parents, teachers and health professionals) are responsible for providing a variety of nutritious food, structured meal times, and an environment that facilitates feeding and social exchange. Children in these stages of life have the responsibility to determine how much they should eat. A purpose to be attained ill preschool and school children and adolescents is to assure their present and future health through the development of healthy feeding habits. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

DIET , *INFANT nutrition , *CHILD nutrition , *NUTRITIONAL requirements , *CHILD development , *DIETARY carbohydrates , *DIETARY proteins , *EDIBLE fats & oils - Abstract
When one thinks about healthy foods, the first question to be addressed is how should they be? And the fundamental premise is that they should be part of an adequate diet. This means that the nutritional quality must be unquestionable; that the amount should be sufficient for covering the nutritional requirements of children at different stages of life; varied which includes the basic groups of foods; equilibrated, this is with optimal proportion in the energy distribution among carbohydrates (55-60%), fat (≤30%, with no more than 10% of saturated fat) and high quality proteins (10-15%); innocuous, which means that it lacks any noxious ingredient for the health of an individual, and it is practically free of pathogens. However, because of the differentiated characteristics of growth and development, a healthy diet depends on the specific stage group of children. For instance, it is important to differentiate a healthy diet for infants, preschool children, school children and adolescents. Each stage group has its own specific requirements to be taken into consideration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
