Abstract

This guide provides Texas teachers and administrators with guidelines, goals, instructional strategies, and activities for teaching Spanish to secondary level native speakers. It is based on the principle that the Spanish speaking student is the strongest linguistic and cultural resource to Texas teachers of languages other than English, and one that must be recognized and developed to its full potential. It is based on the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for Languages Other Than English (TEKS for LOTE). The general goals for programs within this publication are for native Spanish speakers to be able to do the following: acquire pride in their home language and culture; come in contact with various Spanish regional and social dialects; distinguish between formal and informal language registers; read with comprehension and enjoyment; write extensively on materials and topics presented orally; and become familiar with educational and career opportunities of Spanish-English bilingualism. Much of the publication is written in Spanish. Two Spanish language chapters are "Bases Teoricas" (introduccion, nuestro espanol en Texas, and la ensenanza del espanol para el hispanohablante en la escuela secundaria) and "Aplicaciones" (clases especializadas y mixtas, lectura, and escritura). Four appendixes include TEKS for LOTE, perfiles linguisticos de cuatro estudiantes, identificacion de los estudiantes, and annotated bibliography. (SM)

Abstract

Oxfam’s Global Leaders Empowered to Alleviate Poverty (LEAP) program ran for four years from 2011, funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Its main purpose was to promote political leadership for global development. The global reach and the range of partnerships involved in the LEAP project enabled Oxfam to identify and demonstrate improvements in practice across six areas: How to influence policy Effective tactics The global balance in practice The role of Civil Society in global development policy Public support for global development issues How the project developed - identity, strategy and priorities, The external and independent evaluation of the first three years of LEAP focussed on two main areas of work: Oxfam’s relative contributions to policy advocacy outcomes; and how, and how far, Oxfam’s linking of global, national and local advocacy for policy change can show measurable added value., The evaluation concludes that LEAP offered Oxfam and its partners increased influence on policy processes and outcomes, as well as increased advocacy capacity across a range of issues. It identifies three strands from the project for future action: Improving and making the case for aid to fight hunger and poverty Increasing G20 and BRICSAM leadership on global poverty Making the US a global development leader, For each strand the report outlines internal and external issues: Which factors facilitated and hindered the success of the project? What strategies were most and least effective? Did ‘linking to global’ add value and amplify voices in and from the Global South? How far did the project encourage staff from Oxfam and external stakeholders to reflect on the development and management of the project? Abstract

At the beginning of die 19th century, in a context in which Eastern Europe drew most of die media's attention, the means of communication provided die public opinion with images and news from this region. The Russian-Romanian-Turkish War (1877-1878), also known as Romania's Independence War, sparked a lot of interest abroad, due to the considerable number of military observers and artists sent as war correspondents and accredited by die belligerent parties. We will make extensive reference to a work comprising a set of informative articles whose documentary value is enhanced by engravings which cover a wide array of topics. It is a collective volume widi contributions from war correspondents and artists-illustrators, some attracted by die landscape and the urban environment (Ladislaus Eugen Petrovits, Themistoclcs von Eckenbrecher), others by the combatants' faces and appearance (Auguste Lançon), odiers by die uniforms, military equipment and war scenes (Dick de Lonlay, Johann Nepomuk Schönberg), or by the inhabitants' way of life and activity (José Luis Pcllicer). We can also mention the following illustrators who depicted scenes from the Russian-Romanian-Turkish war: Mathes Koenen, Emil Volkers and Friedrich Kaiser. There are also superb images capturing crucial moments of the conflict, whose author is the engraver Carol Popp de Szathmári (Károly Szathmári Pap). Our approach is an interdisciplinary one, given tiiat it contains elements of geography, history', anthropology, sociology, geopolitics, economy and art, which turns it into an analysis of cordial geography, calligeography or beautiful geography. 11. El Estado de la Educacion para los Hispanos en los Estados Unidos (The Condition of Education for Hispanics in the United States).

Abstract

Organized into 4 chapters, the report provides tabular data portraying the educational condition for about 12 million Hispanic Americans in the United States, and shows how Hispanics compare with the majority population on various measures of educational participation and achievement. Providing an overview of Hispanic Americans in the U.S., Chapter 1 discusses the problems of defining Hispanics and Hispanic subgroups, and presents general information on such characteristics as size of the Hispanic population, age and geographical distribution, and school enrollment status. Concerned with elementary and secondary education, Chapter 2 covers such topics as enrollment rates, characteristics of high school students, and school noncompletion. This chapter concludes with a brief description of education in Puerto Rico. Covering postsecondary education, Chapter 3 includes tabular data on such topics as enrollment, degrees awarded, and student characteristics. Portraying the social status in American society of Hispanic teenagers and adults as related to their previous educational level, Chapter 4 covers such topics as employment by broad occupational category, unemployment rates, post-high school experiences, and income levels. Abstract

A guide to the development of Spanish-language curricula for Spanish-speaking secondary students is intended to help teachers and administrators design programs building on students' existing language strengths. The recommended instructional approach is functional-notional, and local districts are encouraged to use it to adapt their textbooks and revise their programs to meet current student needs. The issue of providing specialized Spanish instruction within Spanish second language classes is also discussed. The first portion of the guide, intended for administrators, addresses administrative issues and is written in English. The remainder, designed for the classroom teacher, is written in Spanish. It addresses aspects of instruction, including theoretical bases, the application of theory, specific instructional objectives for each of three levels, program selection and placement, instructional methods and activities for each level, and adaptation of instructional materials. Appended materials include a list of linguistic functions and notions, an article on dialogue journals, a functional trisection of oral activity levels, and bibliographies of reference and instructional materials. Abstract

The article presents information on the etiology of Hepatitis C. Hepatitis C is a blood-borne, infectious disease caused by a hepatotropic virus called Hepatitis C Virus. The disease can cause liver inflammation that is often asymptomatic. It has been found that the intravenous drug use is the leading cause for acquiring Hepatitis C Virus infection in the developed countries. People with Hepatitis C often experience mild symptoms, and consequently do not seek treatment.

Abstract

Are animals conscious? If so, when did consciousness evolve? We address these long-standing and essential questions using a modern neuroscientific approach that draws on diverse fields such as consciousness studies, evolutionary neurobiology, animal psychology, and anesthesiology. We propose that the stepwise emergence from general anesthesia can serve as a reproducible model to study the evolution of consciousness across various species and use current data from anesthesiology to shed light on the phylogeny of consciousness. Ultimately, we conclude that the neurobiological structure of the vertebrate central nervous system is evolutionarily ancient and highly conserved across species and that the basic neurophysiologic mechanisms supporting consciousness in humans are found at the earliest points of vertebrate brain evolution. Thus, in agreement with Darwin's insight and the recent "Cambridge Declaration on Consciousness in Non-Human Animals," a review of modern scientific data suggests that the differences between species in terms of the ability to experience the world is one of degree and not kind.
