This article has the objective of revealing the virtuous circle between the sociological production of knowledge, its incorporation into the public agenda, and the formation of policies that seek to transform gender relations. It covers the trajectory of the production of sociological knowledge about gender and caregiving in Uruguay and their links with public policies. It is argued that in Uruguay the work of research undertaken in academia has been able to promote visibility to the work of caregiving and its value for contributing to social welfare and the economic system. In 2010, the Uruguayan government took these academic researches and initiated the design of a national system of caregiving. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

El artículo presenta los resultados de una investigación sobre la participación de mujeres en la práctica de graffiti en México, con énfasis en los estudios de caso de cuatro mujeres dedicadas al graffiti legal. Se ofrece un resumen del desarrollo y aspectos sociales del graffiti desde finales de la década de 1960 hasta 2013. Los temas discutidos incluyen roles de género, la idea de lo femenino y el contexto familiar de las cuatro escritoras de graffiti.

Se presenta una mesa redonda entre estudiantes de la licenciatura en Ciencia Política y Administración Pública de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, México, celebrada en mayo de 2013, en la cual se discuten temas asociados con la conducta sexual de los jóvenes mexicanos. Los temas discutidos incluyen valoración social de la virginidad, los roles de género en el contexto familiar y feminismo en México.

El autor reflexiona sobre los estereotipos de masculinidad a partir de una escena familiar en la que un niño de siete años muestra a los adultos su comportamiento de hombre. Algunos temas discutidos incluyen la transgresión de los roles de género, aspectos sociales del silencio y aspectos éticos de la libertad de elección. Se incluyen también reflexiones sobre la separación y la muerte como elección.

The article discusses a study on gender relations carried out in 2006 and 2007 in Guadalajara, Mexico among youth between the ages of 15 to 17, 18 to 20, and 21 to 24. Topics discussed include the concept surrounding the expression of keeping women on a short leash, the relationship between gender divisions and gender related violence, and concepts of appropriate male and female gender roles, including ideas of machismo, relationship roles for men and women, and power dynamics within relationships.

Objective. To quantify the association between gender role orientation and tobacco and alcohol use among young people of the State of Morelos. Materials and methods. Study conducted in 2004-2005, students aged 14 to 24 years (n = 1 730). Sociodemographic variables (area of residence, so-cioeconomic status), family (parental education and violence), psycho-sociological (gender role, self-esteem, depression, alcohol consumption, tobacco, locus of control, sexual abuse). Logistic regression analysis. Results. Factors associated with use of tobacco: In women, being androgynous undesirable, masculine role, attempted sexual abuse and urban areas. For men, depression and submission. Factors associated with alcohol use: In women, masculine gender role; and in men to be older than 20 years, living in semi-urban and urban area, and internal locus. Conclusions. The machismo is one of the gender role orientations with greater association with the use of tobacco primarily in girls in Mexico, and the masculine or instrumental role with alcohol. The article discusses the consumption of toys in Mexico in the 1950s, with a focus on the discourse about toys found in advertising and child care guides at that time. An overview of the economic context of Mexico is provided, including references to the import substitution policy carried out by the Mexican government during that decade. Subjects discussed include the idea of toys as a source of happiness for children, the use of war toys in the post-war period, and the role of toys in the reinforcement of gender roles.

The literature understood as a form of representation of reality, shows a series of transformations on the concept of family and, therefore, of family relationships. In this sense, the Mexican narrative written by young women shows a change in the way in which family members interact with each other and on the intergeneric relationships they establish. A translation is presented of the article "What Kind of Power is Love Power" by the author, published in the book "Sexuality, Gender and Power" by Anna G. Jónasdóttir, Valerie Bryson and Kathleen B. Jones. It presents the author's reflections on the exploitable aspects of love, which she describes as the human creative-reproductive ability. She describes her theoretical exploration of the power of love in sociosexual relations (gender relations) and compares this perspective on power with that of what she refers to as the philosophers of power such as M. Foucault.

The overall goal of this research was to assess the degree of social attachment of certain stereotypes about gender (male provider; female caregiver) and violence (violent, peaceful woman) and is framed in the context of a debate about the extent and limits of a gender approach when it comes to understanding and preventing violence in different types of partner. 741 people were involved in the research, two thirds of them women, living in Spain, Mexico, Puerto Rico and El Salvador. In each country, they agreed to a stratified convenience sample according to criteria of gender, age, education level, occupational status and sexual orientation. In one session lasting between 35 and 60 minutes, the participants first answered an IAT (Implicit Association Test) and then a series of items in a questionnaire with closed and open ended questions. One section includes 48 items referring to "activities" that the person must categorize numerically on a scale of 1-7, with a semantic differential format, and whose poles are "male" and "woman." In this series two scales of 24 items each are mixed: hardness and tenderness. From the information obtained it is seen that samples from all countries organize their perception of partner violence according to gender stereotypes. Men and women both perceived attributes of the hardness scale to be masculine, and those of tenderness to be feminine, with these perceived differences in terms of gender role behaviors being even more enhanced and further polarized by the women. The socio-cultural anchor of the gender violence stereotype has theoretical and social implications in that it visualizes abuse from a man to a woman in the heterosexual couple and blurs that which occurs in other forms of partner. I show how spiritual kinships ties, spiritual marriages, and relationships of mastery between Mapuche shamans (machi), animals, and spirits in initiation and healing rituals reflect historical ethnic and national relationships, social and gender dynamics, and complex understandings of personhood. Machi's spiritual relationships are shaped by the gendered power dynamics of colonial mastery and domination, marriage and seduction, possession and ecstasy, and hierarchical kinship systems. These spiritual relationships reflect a complex understanding of personal consciousness in which they are agents of their actions but at the same time share self with the spirits and are dominated by them.Machi gain varied forms of knowledge and power through the exchange of bodily substances as well as through spiritual means. In doing so, they offer a new perspective to current discussions among anthropologists about embodiment, ensoulment, and personhood. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper proposes an analysis based on the ethnography in sex clubs and sex bars for men in the city of Sao Paulo, Brazil. The paper examines how the different markers that operate in such areas are being melted to produce desirable bodies and subjects. I locate these sites in the broader market for commercial sexual encounters among men in the city, exploring social conventions and practices that permeate the body, sexual practices and erotic choices. This is a starting point for inquiring the ways in which certain stereotypes of "masculinity" are provided with meaning and are embodied. I also propose a revision of the erotic choices and sexual practices, which challenges the idea of eroticism expressed by thinkers such as Georges Bataille. According to him, gender is fixed and crystallized, is linked to sexual dimorphism of sex/gender positions. The body "violated", passive and penetrated, is "feminine"- the opposite of the "masculine" ones, the "active", that penetrates. This design underlines the erotic within the heterosexual matrix, which prevents thinking beyond or outside the limits of its rules. Following post-structuralist thinking on gender and sexuality, as well as queer theory, I wonder if we could try to deconstruct the erotic in other terms, in order to interpret anthropologically the practices, discourses and talks discussed here as potentially transgressive.
