CONFIRMATORY factor analysis , *RUGBY football players , *PSYCHOLOGICAL well-being , *CONTACT sports , *EMOTION regulation , *MALE athletes , *ATHLETES with disabilities - Abstract
Athletes have the ability to face situations that affect their performance with cognitive, behavioral and emotional self-regulation strategies. In part, this is because during sports competition they are faced with potentially stressful physical, technical, tactical, and psychological demands. To deal with these situations, achieve sports goals and achieve psychological well-being, it is necessary to use Coping Strategies (CS) appropriately to reduce stress, overcome competitive demands and adapt to the environment. The Approach to Coping in Sport Questionnaire (ACSQ) is a useful tool to evaluate athletes CS. It is based on the transactional model of Lazarus y Folkman (1984), and evaluate cognitive, affective and behavioral CS that athletes use to face psychological difficulties during sports competition. Kim et al. (2003b) adapted the ACSQ to Spanish athletes population who participated in individual and team contact and non-contact sports. The purpose of this study was to adapt to male athletes of contact sports from Córdoba, Argentina, the Spanish version of the ACSQ. An instrumental study was developed to adapt the Spanish version of the ACSQ to male athletes who practice Soccer, Basketball and Rugby in Córdoba, Argentina. Content validity, cognitive interviews, and factorial validity and internal consistency studies were carried out. 318 athletes (171 soccer players, 62 basketball players and 85 rugby players) participated. Mean age was 19.48 years (SD = 4.48). On average, athletes train 4.82 days a week (SD = 1.13) a minimum of three hours a day and a maximum of seven hours per day. The majority of the athletes compete at a National level. To evaluate content validity, semantic quality of the scale items was evaluated using Aiken's V coefficient; Fleiss's Kappa coefficient was used to assess their congruence with the proposed factors. In the cognitive interview process a qualitative analysis was conducted to analyze clarity and comprehension of the test. Then, the items were analyzed using the method of comparison between extremes and the homogeneity index (r). To evaluate the factorial validity of the ACSQ, two Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) procedures were carried out to evaluate, firstly, the adjustment of the data to six factor model proposed by Kim et al. (2003b); secondly, the five-factor model evidenced in the Korean version in which the Emotional Calm (EC) and Active Planning-Cognitive Restructuring (AP-CR) dimensions are two sub-dimensions of the same factor. Finally, the reliability of the instrument was evaluated with the ordinal alpha index and ordinal omega coefficients. 17 items were slightly modified due to linguistic difficulties; the content validity study yielded adequate indexes. The discrimination indices showed significant differences in all the items. Item 5 presented low item/dimension correlations, so it was decided to eliminate it from the following analyses. Finally, upon detecting a high correlation between the EC and AP-CR factors and checking the presence of unidimensionality by means of an EFA, a Confirmatory Factor Analysis of five factors was carried out, which presented acceptable goodness-of-fit indices [χ2(424) = 814.417; CFI= 0.91; TLI= 0.90; RMSEA (0.048 - 0.059) = 0.054]. ACSQ internal consistency was ⍵ =.88, while each factors presented adequate values (⍵= .69 to .92). The final version of the instrument presents adequate validity and reliability to evaluate CS used by male contact athletes in competitive situations. ACSQ was made up of 31 items subdivided into five factors. This version improves quality of the items, their congruence with underlying factors, homogeneity and representativeness of strategies analyzed. Future studies are expected to expand the sample to new sports disciplines, contemplate working with female athletes and analyze in depth the behavior of the AP-CR/EC variable. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mental toughness is characterized by a collection of psychological resources that empower individuals to persevere in the presence of challenges, errors, and setbacks, allowing them to attain elevated levels of performance notwithstanding the inherent challenges in competitive scenarios. The aim of the present study was to delve into the current knowledge of the mental toughness construct and its relationship with intolerance to uncertainty in a sample of 121 male football players aged 18 to 40 years (M = 24.38, SD = 5.36), belonging to the top categories of Argentine soccer. A negative correlation was found between mental toughness and intolerance to uncertainty. Furthermore, it was observed that older and more experienced players exhibited higher levels of mental toughness and lower intolerance to uncertainty. Results suggest the versatility of mental toughness, emphasizing the importance of considering psychological aspects in football training and development. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

DIETARY patterns , *FOOD habits , *COVID-19 pandemic , *SOCIAL impact , *PROFESSIONAL sports , *HEALTH behavior - Abstract
Objective: to identify the impact of the social confinement measure decreed by the Colombian government in the face of Covid-19 on anxiety levels and eating behaviors in athletes attached to different teams in the department of Antioquia. Methodology: cross-sectional descriptive observational study in athletes with high sports achievements from Indeportes Antioquia, who were treated in the medical area between January and August 2020. Aspects of anxiety and eating behaviors, caused during the social isolation measure derived of the Covid-19 pandemic were studied. Results: the survey was answered by 150 athletes. In men, anxiety increases as the age group increases. In women, the phenomenon is opposite. For the same high anxiety rating, the percentage decreases with age. With reference to behaviors related to eating, analyzed under such a complex circumstance, such as the Covid-19 pandemic, allowed sports and health professionals to direct effective recommendations for the athletes they advise, regarding anxiety management and the control of certain negative behaviors that can affect their health and their performance. Conclusions: the results regarding anxiety coincide with current studies, in which, in general terms, the assessed populations show low levels of anxiety; this is related to a low tendency to alterations in eating behavior in the studied population. TEAM sports , *PRACTICE (Sports) , *MEXICANS , *SPORTS competitions , *INDIVIDUAL differences - Abstract
The main objective of the present study was to analyze the orientation of motivation, towards Ego and Task, in a group of athletes who participate in Individual Sports and Group Sports in the National Olympiad. 200 athletes (83 women and 117 men) between 14 and 22 years old participated. The Ego Orientation Questionnaire and the Task in Sport (TEOSQ) were applied to them, in the version of the Adaptation to the Mexican Population (2011). The results of the Multivariate Analysis show significant differences between the Individual Sports and Group Sport in the orientation towards the Ego, F (6,193) = 10.49, p = .000. Athletes who practice Individual Sport consider competition and social recognition more important. Although those who practice Group Sport focus more on the enjoyment and pleasure of their activity, with a lower tendency towards the Ego. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SLEEP-wake cycle , *HABIT breaking , *BEHAVIOR disorders , *MEXICANS , *MENTAL health - Abstract
Introduction. The study of sleep is a complex phenomenon that requires an interdisciplinary approach. Sleep-related behavior and the disorders that may derive from it, are a phenomenon influenced by various economic, social, physical and mental health factors, as well as individual habits. Collado (2016) refers that the high morbidity rates linked to sleep disorders have become a public health problem. Confinement due to the COVID-19 pandemic has modified sleep-wake cycles among the population, exposing them to mental health risks. This condition significantly affects high performance athletes who must maintain stability in their training routines. Method. The present study is quantitative with an exploratory, cross-sectional design and correlational scope. We worked with an incidental sample, made up of 68 participants: 33 men and 35 women, whose central inclusion criterion was adherence to formal sports programs. The objective of the study was to explore the possible relationship between confinement due to the COVID-19 pandemic and possible non-organic disorders. Its justification arises from the fact that the investigations related to the epidemiological and polysomnographic profile in the Mexican population are still incipient. For this, the Oviedo's Sleep Questionnaire (OSQ) (Bobes et al., 2000), was applied, wich is made up of 15 items, grouped into 3 subscales that measure: subjective sleep satisfaction, insomnia and hypersomnia. Results. A significant correlation was found in the changes in sleep-wake patterns caused by overexposure to electronic devices, less daily daytime activity, break with daily habits and patterns of work/rest and parasomnias. Conclusion. The results coincide with research carried out in other sociodemographic profiles. The change in habits and patterns linked to sleep behavior influence the presence of non-organic sleepwake disorders in the studied population, presenting fatigue, distraction, decreased ability to work in a team and integrate information, as well as to make decisions and deficits in their physical, sports and socio-occupational performance. - Abstract
Introduction: Oxidative stress can decrease sports performance, generating a possible muscle overload. An adequate diet contributes to reducing the products derived from oxidative stress; an oxidative anti-stress food is the fruit of Passiflora edulis, as has been verified in-vitro its high polyphenolic content. Objective: to determine the effect of Passiflora edulis consumption on oxidative stress markers in volleyball players during a shock microcycle. Methodology: 14 volleyball players participated voluntarily; They were randomly divided into an experimental group (EG) and a placebo group (PG), both groups entered the shock microcycle. During the seven days of the microcycle, GE consumed 2 ml / day of Passiflora edulis juice (1mg/ml) and PG received 2 ml of placebo. Four blood samples were taken on days 1(D1), 4(D4), 7(D7) and 14(D14). Catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) were determined. Results: During the microcycle, SOD increased in both groups, in D4 compared to D1, and decreased significantly in D14 compared to D7. The CAT did not present statistical differences between the days evaluated. The statistical differences with respect to TBARS only appeared in GE and were in the increase of D4 with respect to D1, and in the decrease of D14 with respect to D7. There were no significant differences when comparing the measurements made between the EG and the GP. Conclusion: No significant effect of the consumption of Passiflora edulis was found on the oxidative stress markers evaluated, it is necessary to evaluate different concentrations of the juice. - Abstract
Athletes are in constant training and education to develop and excel in different disciplines, this in turn requires great physical and psychological effort because must compete against each other countless times throughout their careers, thus creating in some way a constant pressure to "stand out" and "be the best", resulting in equally constant stress. For this reason, it is necessary to carry out mindfunless sessions, which can vary in different techniques. Mindfunless seeks to impose the belief that it is necessary to change the usual emotions, sensations and thoughts that create this stress and athletes and athletes are taught to create a positive intention in order to improve their sports performance with an emphasis on thought control and the use of self-dialogue, this proposes relating one's own internal states such as feeling and thinking in a different way, not trying to change or eliminate them, but taking them as a way of relating them to said states, this being called Mindfunless. Similarly, the application of mindfunless reduces the probability of presenting various psychological disorders, such as neuroticism, alexithymia, anxiety, depression, somatization, hostility, impulsivity, vulnerability to psychiatric diseases, addictions, aggressiveness and impulsivity. - Abstract
The objective of this research was to know the differences in anger levels in athletes and physical activity practitioners with high and low levels of authoritarian fathers and mothers. The sample consisted of 502 Spanish athletes and physical practitioners with an age range between 18 and 64 years old (M = 27.76, SD = 9.11). To measure the different variables were used, an ad hoc sociodemographic questionnaire, the Multifactor Self-Assessment Test of Child Adjustment (TAMAI), the State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory (STAXI-II) and the Oviedo Scale of Infrequency Response (INF-OV). The results showed greater anger levels (p < .05), temperament (p < .01), internal anger expression (p < .01), and anger expression index (p < .05) in the group of authoritarian mother athletes and physical practitioners. On the other hand, the results showed greater levels of trait anger (p < .01), temperament (p < .01), anger reaction (p < .01), external anger expression (p < .01) and anger expression index (p < .01), in athletes and physical practitioners with high authoritarian father group. Regression analysis showed that a greater external anger expression is more likely to have a greater authoritarian father (OR = 1.12, p < .01) and greater authoritarian mother (OR = 1.20, p < .01). It was concluded that authoritarian fathers and authoritarian mothers influence the athlete´s anger levels. On the other hand, fathers with low authoritarian levels showed greater anger external control on athletes and physical practitioners. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SELF-talk , *PSYCHOLOGY of athletes , *THOUGHT & thinking , *COGNITION , *SELF-help techniques , *SELF regulation - Abstract
There currently exists a great deal of available evidence that shows how important self-talk is for performance and self-regulation in sport. Hence, it is not surprising that, during the past few decades, research into sport self-talk has consistently been growing. Nonetheless, the term self-talk refers to di!erent cognitive processes, which makes the conceptual delimitation of self-talk difficult. The purpose of this interpretative review was to present the state-of-the-art in sport self-talk research in order to solve this conceptual confusion and thereby to promote research in the Spanish-speaking world. Specifically, in this review we focused on (a) the development of the major research trends in sport self-talk and, in relation to them (b) the de#nitions of di!erent types of self-talk in sport, (c) self-talk assessment instruments and their relationships with other examined variables, and (d) the di!erent types of self-talk interventions and their respective e!ects on sport performance. This study aims to investigate the prevalence of burnout syndrome in athletes and their relation with different social and sporting variables. They have implemented the two instruments available in Spain for measuring burnout in athletes: IBD-R and the Spanish version of ABQ in a sample of 646 athletes with an average age of 19.73 years. The results show a prevalence of 4.2% for IBD-R and 3.3% for the ABQ and statistically significant differences for sex, presenting the smaller male self-fulfillment than women; and competitive, presenting higher prevalence levels overall and subscale physical/emotional exhaustion at the national level as home. These data are similar to those found in previous investigations, both prevalence and differences according social and sporting variables. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The advances achieved by the feminist movement since the 1970s have also been reflected in athletics, evidenced by the exponential growth in the participation of women. This change has produced new ideals of the female body -one that is strong, athletic, independent, and at the same time sexually attractive- which have been constructed by Western society and fostered by its mercantilist logic through advertising, social networks and certain messages about caring for your body and leading a "healthy lifestyle" chosen by brands which exploit these ideals. We analyze the image of women in three sports where women have reached unprecedented levels of participation and visibility: field hockey, soccer and running. Our study is based on ethnographic field work, along with the analysis of a series of advertisements, videos and pictures on social networks, where such women are portrayed, or self-represented, as models/examples of the new ideal of the female body. In this way, we hope to throw light on the ideals found in the sports women choose to practice and ask whether individual freedom and agency still exist in these activities. We also wonder if the hegemonic ideals of femininity continue to operate there or if the truth lies somewhere between the two alternatives. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ANGER , *PSYCHOLOGY of athletes , *ANGER management , *GENE expression , *SELF-confidence - Abstract
The goal is to identify the differences in trait anger among athletes and people who practice sports in general who considered their body structure and physical characteristics had an influence on their athletic performance. The sample consisted of 366 athletes and people who practice sports in general with an age range from 18 to 64 years old (M = 27.76; SD = 9.11). An ad hoc sociodemographic questionnaire and the Trait-State Anger Expression Inventory (STAXI 2) were used to measure the different variables. Results showed that participants who believed that their physical morphology had a negative influence on their performance showed greater levels of: trait anger (p < .05), temperament (p < .01), internal expression (p < .01), external expression (p < .01) and expression index (p < .01). A negative perception of one's own body structure and physical characteristics was associated with higher levels of anger. This result may either be due to the higher levels of anger which may distort one's perception of his/her body structure and physical characteristics, or that a biased perception of the latter may be responsible for the high levels of anger. SPORTS psychology , *PSYCHOLOGY of athletes , *RISK-taking behavior , *LIKERT scale , *SPORTS injuries , *ATHLETES' health - Abstract
Risk propensity is a decision which entails either becoming involved in - or avoiding risks. Risk propensity has a general and specific aspect. The premise is that risk propensity has to encompass several domains and a temporal dimension. The level of propensity, situational demand, gender, age and past experience produce inconsistency in risk approaches. An instrumental study was developed to adapt the Risk Taking Index (RTI) in athletes from Córdoba, Argentina. The RTI is a simple and short measure with a Likert response format where people must rate their risk propensity in the present and past in six domains. In addition, differences between groups were performed, based on socio-demographic and sports variables, as well as correlation analysis between risk propensity and sports injuries occurrence. First, it was found that the RTI is a valid and consistent scale for assessing risk propensity in athletes. Confirmatory factor analysis indicated that the fit of the data to the theoretical model is satisfactory and reliability analysis showed high rates. Secondly, differences in risk propensity were found based on sex, age, and sports modality, as well as an interaction effect between these variables. Thirdly, small and positive associations were found between risk propensity and occurrence of both current and past sports injuries. In the future, it is suggested to evaluate differences between groups contemplating the type of sport, analizing risk in risky sports and delving into the study of this variable in the sports population. - Abstract
The main objective of this work is to analyze the different mercantile aspects of the image rights of professional athletes. Starting from the constitutional recognition of this right and focusing on the transfer of its heritage, we see how athletes, knowing their fame and the commercial value of their image, cede their image rights to commercial companies, using multiple contracts to do so. mercantile -- in what is conceived as true artifacts of financial engineering. All with one purpose: to try to earn more money by paying less to the Treasury. In our work, we analyze the different mercantile aspects that derive from the assignment of these rights, we study the legal-fiscal treatment of the emoluments perceived by the athletes as cession of these rights and we verify as the sport, in its professional aspect, Every day is more commercialized and clear manifestation of it is the transfer of image rights.
