1. Illinois Early Learning Project Tip Sheets: Physical Development and Health.

Abstract

The Illinois Early Learning Project (IEL) is funded by the Illinois State Board of Education to provide information resources on early learning and training related to implementing the Illinois Early Learning Standards for parents and for early childhood personnel in all settings. The IEL tip sheets offer suggestions to parents and early childhood personnel on a variety of topics related to children's early experiences. This set of 12 tip sheets, in English- and Spanish-language versions, relates specifically to children's physical development and health. Titles are as follows: (1) "Dental Health for Babies"; (2) "Fight Germs! Wash Your Hands!"; (3) "Is My Child OK?"; (4) "Keeping Young Children Safe in the Car"; (5) "No More Diapers: Getting Started"; (6) "No More Diapers: Is Your Child Ready?"; (7) "Physical Fitness for Toddlers"; (8) "Preventing Lead Poisoning in Children"; (9) "Say Yes to Healthy Snacks!"; (10) "Teaching Children To Avoid 'Stranger Danger'"; (11) "Too Sick To Go to Child Care?"; and (12) "When Should I Send a Sick Child Home?" 2. Camp Health Aide Manual = Manual para trabajadores de salud.

Abstract

This bilingual manual serves as a textbook for migrant Camp Health Aides. Camp Health Aides are members of migrant labor camps enlisted to provide information about health and social services to migrant workers and their families. The manual is divided into 12 tabbed sections representing lessons. Teaching notes printed on contrasting paper contain objectives for the lesson, a list of materials needed, and examples of demonstration methods. Chapter 1, "Introduction to the Camp Health Aide Program," provides general information. Chapter 2, "Learning Different Ways of Helping People," addresses skills needed by the Camp Health Aide. Chapter 3, "Personal Hygiene," covers dental health, scabies, lice, ticks, athletes foot, and ringworms. Chapter 4, "Camp Sanitation and Safety," contains sections on safety hazards, trash disposal, wild animals, and pesticide poisoning. "Basic First Aids" is presented in chapter 5. Chapter 6 is a brief overview of nutrition. Chapter 7, "Keeping Your Children Healthy," provides information on vaccinations, diseases, and nutrition. Chapter 8 addresses pre- and postnatal care during pregnancy. Adult illnesses and high blood pressure are explained in chapter 9. Symptoms, treatment, and prevention of "AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Diseases" are discussed in chapter 10. Common children's illnesses are described in chapter 11. The final chapter addresses mental health problems. The manual contains many drawings and a subject index. (KS)

Nutriment habits and oral hygiene in a preschool population in Madrid were studied by stratification in public or private schools. Significant differences were found only with regard to consumption of fish. Vegetable and fruit consumption was low in both groups, but not statistically significant. (SH)

Abstract

These five learning modules use text interspersed with illustrations and reinforcement exercises to instruct dental aide and dental hygiene students about jaw bones and gums, dental deposits, and dental instruments. The first four modules were prepared by Patricia Lind in both Spanish and English. "The Gum and Bone of Permanent Teeth" ("La Encia y el Hueso de los Dientes Permanentes") teaches about the different parts of the gum and their functions, how the bone supports the teeth, and how to distinguish between healthy and unhealthy gums and bone. "Dental Deposits" ("Depositos Dentales") teaches the learner about food, plaque, tartar, and stain deposits. "Dental Instruments for Examining the Teeth" ("Instrumentos Dentales para Examinar los Dientes") describes the dental mirror, explorer, and probe and how these instruments are used in an oral examination. The third module, "Sharpening Dental Instruments" ("Como Afilar los Instrumentos Dentales") underscores the importance of sharpening instruments and shows how to check and sharpen the spoon, spade, hoe, and file. The final module, "Basic Principles of Instrument Sharpening Using Chisels and Spoons" by Catherine Germano, lists the advantages of sharp instruments, identifies the different instrument parts, compares dull and sharp instruments, states the principle objective of sharpening techniques and the method by which an instrument is applied to the sharpening stone, and teaches the student the correct way to achieve a sharp edge. These three booklets on family and child health are part of a series of 22 booklets specifically designed to help parents understand their children and help them to learn. "The Effects of Stress on Parents and Family Life" (booklet #17), covers issues such as causes and effects of stress, stress and our modern society, and coping with stress. In "Childhood Immunization and Dental Care" (booklet #14), the importance of early childhood immunization and dental care is explained with reference to common childhood diseases. "Nutrition and the Health of Your Family" (booklet #15) discusses the essential food groups, do's and don'ts, diet and exercise, individuals with special nutrition needs, and nutrition for infants and children ages 5 to 18. The booklets are written with the same text in both English and Spanish, are easy to read, and include illustrations. (MP)

Abstract

Objective: To analyze the scientific production related to the knowledge, attitudes and practices on dental health of parents in relation to COVID-19. Methods: A bibliometric analysis was carried out in the scientific database of Web of Science. Results: Six documents published in high impact journals (Q1, Q2, Q3) were analyzed, identifying the countries, journals, institutions with the highest production, collaboration indexes and key word co-occurrences. Conclusion: The scarce production registered in Web of Science on the subject of the study promotes opportunities for future research adapted to the context of different countries and cultures. In addition, the documents establish that most parents were unaware of the transmission by close contact with asymptomatic patients and the risk during dental practices, accepting practices of self-medication of prescribed medicines, attitudes that influenced the decision of whether or not to take their children for dental consultation.
