- Abstract
Presented both in English and Spanish, the brochure is primarily concerned with biological and developmental characteristics of the person with Down's syndrome. An emphasis is on the valuable humanizing influence these individuals have on society. Brief sections in the document discuss the delayed developmental aspects of Down's syndrome; the characteristic physical features; a biological explanation of the chromosomal abnormalities causing Down's syndrome; prevention through the use of genetic counseling; the importance of early intervention, nursery schools, and public education; and the contributions people with Down's syndrome can make to society. Illustrative representations include: (1) a photograph of human chromosomes as seen through a microscope; (2) a graphic illustration of the cell division process in which the 21st chromosome undergoes disjunction; (3) a graphic illustration of the chromosome abnormality resulting in Down's syndrome; (4) a karotype of a girl with "Trisomy 21" Down's syndrome; (5) a karotype of a girl with "Translocation" Down's syndrome; (6) a graphic illustration of "mosaicism" occurring early in cell division; and (7) a graphic representation of the relationship between maternal age and the incidence of Down's syndrome. Each page includes photographs of children with Down's syndrome participating in everyday life as a reminder that children with Down's syndrome are more similar to the average child than they are different.
