OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate the nutritional status of patients with stage 3 and 4 diabetic nephropathy (DN; DN-3 and DN-4) and to explain the effect of DN stages on the prognosis of protein-energy wasting (PEW). METHODS: Data from demographic characteristics, anthropometric measurements, biochemical findings, food consumption records, and the Subjective Global Assessment (SGA) screening tool of 49 patients (25 DN-3; 24 DN-4) who were followed at the nephrology department were collected. The criteria of the International Society of Renal Nutrition and Metabolism (ISRNM) were used to determine PEW. RESULTS: 56% of DN-3 and 66.7% of DN-4 have been diagnosed with diabetes for over 15 years. The groups differed in total body weight, body-muscle weight, creatinine, microalbuminuria, and eGFR values (p<0.05). Protein (g/kg) intake was only different between the groups (p<0.05). 18.4% of patients had SGA-B score, and 26.5% had PEW. CONCLUSION: Our study provides a general impression about the presence of PEW in DN patients not receiving dialysis in Turkiye. In patients with DN-3 and DN-4, daily energy and macronutrient intakes are adequate by recommendation. According to ISRNM criteria, the prevalence of PEW increased with advancing disease stage. PEW was observed to be more effective than SGA in assessing malnutrition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SCHOOL closings , *PSYCHIATRIC emergencies , *DEMOGRAPHIC characteristics , *MENTAL health , *ASSISTANCE in emergencies - Abstract
Introduction: In March 2020, the World Health Organization declared that COVID-19 had risen to the category of a global pandemic, causing a significant bio-psycho-social impact on the underage population. Some possible factors that may have influenced this include school closing, social isolation, and the disruption of daily routines, among others. Material and methods: A retrospective observational descriptive study was carried out, to find the number and type of emergencies attended, based on demographic characteristics such as gender, age, as well as reason for consultation and destination after assessment in the Emergency Department. Results: These data show a 20% increase in attendance in relation to previous data collected in the same time period corresponding to the year 2017. The average age of consultation was 14.9 years. As for gender, there is a female predominance accounting for 65% of the consultations. The most frequent diagnosis was anxiety disorder, followed by mood disorder. Conclusions: Children and adolescents represent a vulnerable population in terms of mental health. A 20% increase compared to previous years stands out in the demand for assistance in psychiatric emergencies for children and adolescents in the months after lockdown. That is the reason why we believe that the work of interdisciplinary teams is necessary, emphasizing early detection, in order to respond to the needs of minors and their families. ELASTICITY (Economics) , *INCOME , *HOUSEHOLD surveys , *VALUES education , *REGRESSION analysis , *DEMOGRAPHIC characteristics - Abstract
The microeconomic research about private expenditures on educational goods and services shows that the variation in investment levels reflects differences in income, socio-demographic characteristics, and the average number of household members. There are few studies in Latin America, however, that also explore the income elasticity of educational demand. This article addresses this important gap in Mexico, using data from the 2020 National Survey of Household Income and Expenditures. By means of Engel curves and tobit regression analysis, this article outlines the values assigned to education according to family traits. In particular, the results show that, as we focus on economically wealthier households, education is no longer a superior good, without becoming a necessity good. In addition, the data show evidence of gender differences that are opposite to those pointed out in the peer-reviewed literature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

GALLBLADDER cancer , *SEXUAL dimorphism , *METAPLASIA , *DEMOGRAPHIC characteristics , *STANDARD deviations , *CHOLECYSTITIS - Abstract
Introduction. Gallbladder cancer is the most common cancer in the biliopancreatic tract and an important cause of mortality. Metaplasia and dysplasia have been mentioned as probable precursors related to the metaplasiadysplasia-cancer sequence. The objective of this study was to establish the possible associations between these histopathological alterations and their relationship with the age and sex of the patients. Methods. Descriptive retrospective observational study, with a cross-sectional analytical component. Pathology reports of patients undergoing elective and outpatient laparoscopic cholecystectomy were included between January 2015 and December 2020, with chronic cholecystitis, cholelithiasis, or gallbladder polyps, over 18 years of age. Demographic characteristics by sex and age was performed using means, standard deviations, and percentages. The chi2 test and Fisher’s exact test were used to evaluate the association between the qualitative variables. Results. 4871 pathology reports were included. In this cohort, a statistically significant association was found between metaplasia, dysplasia, and gallbladder cancer (p<0.05), as well as with the sex and age of the patients. Conclusions. The results suggest an association between metaplasia, dysplasia and gallbladder cancer in the study population. Additional research is recommended to define the possible causality between metaplasia, dysplasia, and gallbladder cancer in a more heterogeneous population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: Return to work and permanence in employment of women who survive breast cancer are topics that become important as incidence and survival rates increase. Self-efficacy as a modifiable element is of special interest in this process. The objective of this study is to measure the level of self-efficacy in female breast cancer survivors, according to sociodemographic, work and treatment characteristics and their relationship with return to work. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study, based on a survey of breast cancer patients about their demographic and work characteristics, the return to work process, permanence in the same job and the level of work self-efficacy. Differences in the level of self-efficacy with respect to characteristics were evaluated using bivariate analyses and hypothesis statistical testing. A value of p<0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: One hundred and twenty-four women were included, 87.9% had returned to work, the majority (56.4%) between one and six months after treatment, 67.7% remained in the same job. Higher levels of work self-efficacy were related to a higher probability of returning to work and staying there, and a shorter time to return to work; these differences were statistically significant. Conclusion: Occupational health and risk prevention services must consider and strengthen work self-efficacy and organizational support in breast cancer survivors to achieve a successful return to work [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BOVINE leukemia virus , *ANIMAL herds , *DEMOGRAPHIC characteristics , *AGE groups , *CATTLE herding , *ODDS ratio - Abstract
Bovine leukosis is a disease caused by an oncogenic retrovirus that belongs to the Retroviridae family and is known for its worldwide distribution, causing great economic losses, especially in dairy farming. Few studies on the disease have been reported in Risaralda (Colombia). The objective was to determine the prevalence of the bovine leukosis virus and its association with some risk/protection factors in cattle herds from Risaralda. Blood samples were taken from 145 individuals from 6 herds in the Risaralda region, during the year 2018. DNA extraction was carried out by salting out and PCR was used to detect the provirus DNA. For each animal, the racial composition, sex, age group, origin and herd were taken in order to evaluate possible factors associated with the presence of the virus. A descriptive analysis of the information was performed, the prevalence was estimated with the 95% confidence interval, and the effect of risk/protection factors on leukosis positivity was determined by logistic regression and the odds ratio was estimated. All analyzes were done using R software. A general prevalence of 6.90% was estimated. Statistically significant differences were found for age group one (Under 5 years) and two (5 to 10 years) with respect to age group three (Over 10 years) (OR = 0.19 in both cases), indicating a higher frequency with age. This work is one of the first carried out in the department of Risaralda and provides surveillance of the disease in Colombia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

NON-small-cell lung carcinoma , *INSERTION mutation , *PROTEIN-tyrosine kinase inhibitors , *OVERALL survival , *DEMOGRAPHIC characteristics - Abstract
In non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) with classical EGFR mutation, EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) produce better results than platinum-based chemotherapy. However, therapeutic efficacy is quite different in patients with EGFR exon 20 insertion mutations (ex20ins) versus common mutations. Patients with ex20ins mutations are insensitive to EGFR-TKIs and have poor prognosis. It is important to know the demographic and clinical characteristics in this group of patients and the prevalence in our region. Methodology: retrospective, single institution, case series review of patients with non-small cell lung cancer with exon 20 insertion mutations from 2017-2023. Patients had received first-line therapy for advanced disease and had imaging studies to assess response. Demographics, characteristics, and treatment of each patient were recorded. Treatment response was assessed using RECIST v1.1 criteria and overall survival was calculated using the Kaplan Meier method. Results: Among the 15 patients identified with non-small cell lung cancer with exon 20 insertion mutations at our institution, the incidence for the mutation was 1.5%. The mean age was 60 years, 46.7% were women, and the incidence of the mutation was 1.5%. The average age was 60 years, 46.7% were women, 14 patients were Hispanic and 1 patient was Asian, only 3 patients had a history of smoking. Forty percent of the patients had an Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) functional score of 2. The histologic subtype was adenocarcinoma in all cases. Of the 13 (86.7%) patients who received first-line treatment had evaluable scans to determine response, 11 progressed, 1 patient had stable disease, and 1 patient had a partial response. The median overall survival (OS) was 5 months. Conclusions: Patients with exon 20 insertion mutations have resistance to tyrosine kinase inhibitors, which confers a worse prognosis. It is vital to know in our region the incidence of the mutation and patient characteristics to provide timely diagnosis and treatment. Our results provide an important context for the development of new therapies that can be approved in the first line of treatment and not in subsequent lines. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

METEOROLOGICAL stations , *DEMOGRAPHIC characteristics , *POLYGONS , *KRIGING , *ACQUISITION of data - Abstract
One of the principal challenges facing meteorological warnings in Spain is their lack of adaptability to the unique climatic and demographic characteristics of each region. This often results in the establishment of thresholds and warning zones that may not be entirely suitable for local conditions. In this study, we utilize maximum temperatures as a case study to develop a novel methodology aimed at addressing these issues specifically in the Region of Murcia. We collected data on daily maximum temperatures from 84 weather stations during the meteorological summer in the period 2000 - 2019. Utilizing this dataset, we calculated the 95th, 97th, and 99th percentiles for each station and generated three interpolated maps using universal kriging techniques. Warning zones were then delineated through overlap analysis, and maximum temperature thresholds were established based on three levels of risk. This methodological approach has resulted in the identification of 19 meteorological warning zones, delineated based on the aggregation of postcode polygons. This zoning strategy facilitates a more tailored adaptation of meteorological warnings to the local terrain and demographics, thereby enhancing the effectiveness of population protection and pre-emergency management. In the last years, there have been many academic studies that have accounted for the social and demographic characteristics of contemporary Spanish emigration to different European and Latin American capital cities. Using an ethnographic perspective, this article analyses a specific group that participates in this phenomenon--20-to-40-year-old men and women with University studies that migrated to the city of Edinburgh, Scotland, between 2010 and 2019. Taking as a starting point a network of subjective factors as well as the anthropological thought and research about this issue, we aim to analyse the socio-historical circumstances that motivated the migration of this social sector to the city of Edinburgh, as well as their diverse forms of making a living. For that purpose, between 2018 and 2019 we have used different research itineraries -- participant observation, in-depth interviews -- with the aim of acquiring a deep diachronic knowledge about their practices, dispositions, assessments and labour trajectories. This analysis allows us to enquire into their work experiences in the city of Edinburgh and the collective solidarity networks generated in certain times and spaces in order to carry out revindication processes about the restrictive conditions of their daily lives. This also opens the possibility to enquire into two organisational processes -- as workers and as migrants -- attending to the difficulties and contingencies -- transformations, reconfigurations -- that they transit during their cultural and social shaping as a struggling group. OLDER people , *ACTIVITIES of daily living , *MENTAL depression , *DEMOGRAPHIC characteristics , *AFFECTIVE disorders - Abstract
Depression is considered the most prevalent mood disorder in older people, generating a significant burden in the economic, personal and social spheres. It is established as a geriatric syndrome. The objective of the research was to determine the level of depressive symptoms and the associated factors in a group of older people from a rural context. This is a descriptive and cross-sectional study, with a population of older people, the type of sampling was non-probabilistic for convenience. Demographic factors evaluated according to self-report by the participant, family member or responsible caregiver were considered. Using a pre-designed and validated questionnaire, we inquired about age in years, gender, education, marital status, socioeconomic stratum level, employment status and economic dependency. Likewise, a history of chronic infectious diseases was found out. As instruments, the Yesavage scale was used, a self-report instrument, composed of 15 items that measure the presence of depressive symptoms through direct questions, the Minimental Test, a widely used instrument for the detection of global cognitive impairment, due to its speed and ease of scoring. The Life Questionnaire is a tool that evaluates performance in instrumental activities of daily living; To evaluate the use of living space, the Life Space Assessment (LSA) scale was chosen, a self-report measure requiring respondents to quantify how far and how often they have moved with or without assistance during the last four weeks. Latent class analysis was used to identify subgroups, according to patterns of depressive symptomatology. Results: 288 participants were included, aged between 60 and 93 years, with a higher proportion of women (57 %) from socioeconomic stratum 1 (99.7 %), with a low level of education (41 % with incomplete primary school). The average of the Yesavage scale was 10 (IR: 9 to 11). The analysis model presents four classes or subgroups of depressive symptom profiles with an entropy equal to 0.98. Classes 1, 2 and 3 show a predominance of depressive symptoms in the sample, with 3.81 %, 23.2 % and 21.6 %, respectively. The fourth class corresponds to moderate symptoms and would be present in 51.35 % of the sample. Regarding demographic characteristics, heterogeneity is observed at the level of the four subgroups. At the level of global cognitive performance, the results showed that it is one of the variables with the highest incidence in depressive symptoms in all groups. In relation to the total score in the VIDA questionnaire, compared to class 4, class 1 presented a SMD = -0.1 [95 % CI (-.716 - .51)], class 2 a SMD = .53 [95 % CI (-. .23 - .83)] and class 3 a SMD = -0.05 [95 % CI (-.33 - .24)]. On the LSA scale, compared to class 4, class 1 presented a SMD = -.62 [95 % CI (-1.233 - 0)], class 2 had a SMD = .42 [95 % CI (.12 - .72)] and class 3 a SMD = -.49 [95 % CI (-.78 - -.19)]. Regarding the Minimental Test, compared to class 4, class 1 presented a SMD = .62 [95 % CI (0 - 1.23)], class 2 a SMD = .46 [95 % CI (.16 - .76)] and class 3 a SMD = -.04 [95 % CI (-.33 - .25)]. It is concluded that the study shows significant associations between the presence of depressive symptoms in relation to demographic characteristics and cognitive performance, preferably; However, factors such as the use of living space and autonomy may present a bidirectional relationship with the analysis variable. Background. Large-scale population-based seroprevalence studies of SARS-CoV-2 are essential to characterize the cumulative incidence of SARS-CoV-2 infection and to extrapolate the prevalence of presumptive immunity at the population level. Objective. The objective of our survey was to estimate the cumulative population immunity for COVID-19 and to identify individual characteristics associated with positive serostatus. Materials and Methods. This was a clustered cross-sectional study conducted from July 12 to August 20, 2021, in households in the city of Bangui, the capital of the Central African Republic. Information regarding demographic characteristics (age, gender, and place of residence), and comorbidities (chronic diseases) was collected. A venous blood sample was obtained from each participant to determine the level of total anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies using a WANTAI SARS-CoV-2 Ab ELISA kit. Results. All up, 799 participants were surveyed. The average age was 27 years, and 45.8% of the respondents were male (sex ratio: 0.8). The overall proportion of respondents with positive serostatus was 74.1%. Participants over 20 years of age were twice as likely to have positive serostatus, with an OR of 2.2 [95% CI: (1.6, 3.1)]. Conclusions. The results of this survey revealed a high cumulative level of immunity in Bangui, thus indicating a significant degree of spread of SARS-CoV-2 in the population. The public health implications of this immunity to SARS-CoV-2 such as the post-vaccination total antibody kinetics remain to be determined. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article aims to analyze the attitudes of entrepreneurs in Nuevo León regarding the social and labor integration of people who have arrived with the migrant caravans since 2016. Through qualitative research and semistructured interviews, this work found that the state of Nuevo León offers conditions for migrants to have a better quality of life. However, the culture shock and the limited interest of migrants in integrating into this society may hurt the perception of migrants by the Nuevo León society. In conclusion, there is a division in the attitudes of the region's citizens, generating a debate between integrating migrants productively or segregating them from society. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

GREENHOUSE gases , *ENVIRONMENTAL protection , *ENERGY consumption , *STATISTICAL association , *MULTIVARIATE analysis , *DEMOGRAPHIC characteristics , *RURAL poor - Abstract
The European building stock is responsible for 36% of greenhouse gas emissions and 40% of energy consumption, and its rehabilitation would reduce consumption by 26%. In addition to the economic benefits of this reduction, such as its incidence in reducing energy poverty, energy efficient homes imply co-benefits in terms of comfort and health of their inhabitants; however, households are not aware of this, which, together with other barriers, discourages obtaining efficient housing. This work seeks to know the importance that households give to the benefits and co-benefits associated with energy efficiency; understand if it is homogeneous among these, and identify its correlation with its sociodemographic characteristics. To do this, a survey is carried out on a sample of households in Barcelona. Through a multivariate analysis, the patterns of relevance given to the different advantages and their statistical association with the sociodemographic characteristics of the households are identified. The results suggest that the importance of these benefits is heterogeneous. Older and higher-income people value more co-benefits such as health, comfort and environmental conservation, but younger and lower-income people value savings more. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The pandemic modifies Mexican hospital care, adding 42.5% of non-indigenous patients and 60.2% of indigenous patients infected by covid d 19. The risk of hospitalization for indigenous and non-indigenous patients is given by sociodemographic, health and residence characteristics at the beginning of the pandemic. Developing multinomial logistic models with data from May 22, 2020, it is obtained that in the risk of hospitalization without and with intubation there are common and specific variables, increasing for indigenous people if they reside in large cities due to migration as they are linked to the informality whose place of work is mainly the public space. Background: This work analyzed the impact of COVID-19 on antidepressant consumption during the first year of the pandemic (2020) taking as a baseline the prescribing trends during the previous 4 years (2016-2019). For this, the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and the 4 islands that make it up were taken as a geographical area. Methods: Sales data in community pharmacies were taken as an aggregated database. The dose per inhabitant and day was used as an indicator of consumption. Results: In the islands of EL Hierro and La Gomera, the increase in population does not in itself justify the relevant increases observed in the consumption of antidepressants and possibly COVID-19 and its consequences on the health of the population could be responsible for these increases. On the island of Tenerife, the increase in population could justify, to a large extent, the slight increase in consumption observed. The island of La Palma presents an increase of 1.40%, but lower than the expected value taking as baseline the prescribing trends in the last 4 years, despite an increase in population of 0,95%. All the islands present the same trends in the consumption of the different subgroups of antidepressants and active pharmaceutical ingredients, although with slight variations, with the exception of the island of La Palma which presents a statistically different behavior and trends. Conclusions: These differences could be related to the socio-sanitary and demographic characteristics of each of the islands. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction : Human mobility implies facing a series of changes related to labor insertion, adaptation to the sociocultural context, lifestyle and access to health and education services, this last aspect also affects the national population and is not exclusive to international migrant populations. Objective : To determine the barriers within the health services of the Afro-Colombian population with experience of internal mobility from the department of Chocó to Medellín and of the Afro-Colombian population born in that city. Methodology : Cross-sectional analytical observational study. A telephone survey was made to 211 Afro-Colombian people in condition of internal mobility from the department of Chocó to Medellín and born in Medellín. From this, a descriptive analysis was carried out to describe the social and demographic characteristics of the population. Prevalence ratios with 95% CI were calculated to investigate the relationship between social and demographic characteristics and internal mobility status with the presence or absence of barriers to access to health services. The multivariate technique was a generalized linear model for categorical dependent variables reporting PR with 95% CI. Results : Sex, age and affiliation regime are characteristics that may be associated with the presence of barriers within the health services. The condition of internal mobility is related to geographical and continuity barriers, but not significantly. Conclusions : The Afro-Colombian population in condition of internal mobility and born in Medellín experiences barriers of a geographic type, of continuity and for the complete delivery of medicines within the health services. The dispersed population occupation is supported by a territorial structure and is explained by relationships in a vertical space, in contexts of minor cities close to rural resources, as in Sondondo valley, Ayacucho. We study (i) the demographic characteristics of dispersed occupation in its spatial relationships with networks of territorial structure, and (ii) the types of displacements in their spatial and scalar relationships; both enable socioeconomic, cultural and management dynamics of extensive areas. This exploratory research seeks to approximate a methodology that values the spatial relationships in the forms of dispersed population occupation and the understanding of its vertical space complexity, as an alternative to standardized planning in smaller cities, which fragments the support that still makes this population dispersion possible. It is identified that the population is dispersed with forms of spatial grouping and territorial articulation pondering a sense of efficiency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Gender stereotypes assign traits to men and women generating social segregation and are related to sexist attitudes. The objectives of this study were to identify gender stereotypes and manifestations of Hostile and Benevolent Sexism in heterosexual men and women, and to determine whether stereotypical beliefs together with demographic characteristics predict the type of sexism. Using a cross-sectional predictive design, 475 people (62.3% women, 33.7% men) were evaluated, completing the analysis with the general sample and with men and women separately, to calculate linear regression models in each subsample. Two stereotypical forms were identified, a) Traits and characteristics of male superiority, and b) Male dominance; both predict Benevolent Sexism, but the stereotypes of male superiority present a higher level of explanation of the variable (R²=.39, f²=.63>.35, 1-β=1.0), than those based on male dominance (R²=14, f²=.16>.15, 1-β=1.0). Hostile Sexism is also predicted by the first group of stereotypes (R²= 41, f²=.69, 1-β=1.0). Among men, both stereotypes predict sexist ways, while among women the effect of male dominance stereotypes is of little relevance. Stereotypes that assume male superiority (independence, intelligence, leadership, etc.) are the main predictors of sexist attitudes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

TURKEYS as food ,COMMERCIALIZATION ,DEMOGRAPHIC characteristics ,MEXICAN cooking - Abstract
Introduction: worldwide, acute respiratory infection (ARI) is one of the principal causes of medical consultation. It is related to a significant burden in terms of morbidity and mortality, especially among people at extreme ages of life. To Identify the respiratory viruses associated with acute respiratory infection in children and adults, at ESE San Rafael de Yolombó, between October 2021 and April 2022. Methodology: following the national recommendations of the Ministry of Health, an ARI surveillance program was implemented. A cross-sectional study was developed under an analysis of a secondary source of information. A total of 212 cases were studied, all of which met the criteria ARI. A descriptive analysis of the demographic and clinical characteristics of the sample was performed. Results: the global percentage of positivity for viral isolation was 15.7 %. The highest positivity (19.2 %) was recorded among children from zero to 4 years old. Of the total positive cases, the respiratory syncytial virus was detected in 54.4 %, influenza A in 24.2 %, metapneumovirus in 15.2 %, and parainfluenza virus 3 in 6.1 %. 78.8 % of cases required hospital treatment, 7.8 % of which were derived to a high-level hospital. 13.5 % of the pediatric population was born prematurely, and 45.8 % of the adult population suffered from some cardiometabolic disease. Conclusions: the care of ARI cases represents a high burden for the health care system in rural areas. The continuity of epidemiological surveillance programs for this event in scattered areas of the country constitutes a crucial tool for planning its management from the field of public health. This study aims to identify the business owners’ sociodemographic characteristics that influence the achievement of business success in Peru. Using data from the 2018 National Household Survey on Living Conditions and Poverty, econometric estimates were made with the Ordinary Least Squares method. Considering the success of a business as the magnitude of the profit obtained, the econometric results indicate that its achievement is conditioned by gender, age, years of education achieved, state of health, marital status, number of children, belonging to a social network, ethnic self-perception, business persistence and intensity of internet use. Likewise, the achievement of business success is also influenced by factors considered as control variables in this study, such as the size of the company, the use of accounting systems and the regional and zonal location.
