The present study aimed to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis on alterations in cognitive functions in battered women. We selected an initial sample of 643 records obtained from the databases: Medline, ERIC, PsycInfo, CNAIL, Proquest and Scielo. Following the study selection procedure led to the retention of 12 articles on which the study has focused. The results of the qualitative synthesis indicate that attention, language, memory, visuospatial skills, executive function, motor speed and educational performance are altered in battered women, with greater evidence of deterioration in the areas of attention, memory and executive functions. The results of the meta-analysis suggest presence of brain damage in these women and a special affectation of the memory and executive functions. These results support the existence of alterations in cognitive functions in women who have been victims of abuse. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of an individual psychological treatment for battered women. The sample comprises a total of 128 women battered by their partners, users of public services, aged between 18 and 67 years (M = 38.49, SD = 9.20), and with different marital status and educational and occupational levels. Ninety-six of them participated in the protocol-centered intervention program assessed in the present study, whereas 32 were not involved and were considered as control group. Results show a statistically significant reduction of posttraumatic, depressive, and anxiety symptoms as well as of self-insecurity in women who received psychological intervention. In addition, whereas the latter experienced an increase of self-esteem and self-confidence, women who did not participate in the program did not observe such changes. Moreover, these changes remained constant in the follow-up. The improvement of women's mental health was also significant at the clinical level. We thus conclude that these findings prove the efficacy of this psychological intervention program. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

After a literature review of recent studies on partner violence against women in Spain, this paper describes the central indicators of frequency, prevalence and course of domestic abuse. The main characteristics of battered women, their children, the male aggressors, and the social and professional context in which these actions take place are summarized. Partner violence against women in Spain appears to be a serious social problem affecting a significant number of people. It is also a very heterogeneous and widespread phenomenon particularly with respect to female victims' characteristics. However, studies offer a more homogenous profile of the course of domestic violence against women. Asa whole, available indicators of domestic violence against women in Spain led us to cast some doubt and refute many of the prejudices about this subject. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this ex post facto study was to analyze the profile of 1,081 cases, which were denounced in the police station of the Ertzaintza (Basque Country), because of having committed a serious offense of gender violence. First, psychological and sociodemographic variables, as well as of couple's relationship, of both aggressors and victims are presented. And second, the most significant differences between the serious violence and the less serious violence in these variables are determined. Results showed that both the aggressors and the victims were rather young and with a high rate of immigration. Regarding the most serious aggressors, they tended to be jealous or possessive, to feel humiliated by the couple's breaking up, what directly influenced in a lower self-esteem, and to abuse of alcohol or drugs. Regarding the victims of the most serious violence, they usually felt in danger of death and they were more easily in vulnerability circumstances, such as a very young age, a very dependent personality, a chronic illness, an economic dependence, an abuse of alcohol or dregs or an environment of loneliness. The aim of this article is the analysis of available treatments for battered women who present PTSD, whose efficacy have been put to the test. The applied strategy consisted of a bibliographic search of the available studies in the Medline, EBSCO and Lilacs database. Besides, reference bibliography has been consulted. Three approach models were found, supported by a scarce number of studies. Unfortunately none of these models was investigated by independent researchers, limiting the results conclusive power. Nevertheless, the results suggest that Cognitive Therapy for Trauma in Battered Women would be established as treatment of choice. Clinical implications as well as limitations for the generalization of the obtained results, are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With the introduction of Spanish legislation (Ley Orgánica 1/2004) on Comprehensive Preventive and Protective Measures against Gender Violence, the Autonomous Community of Galicia has put into force on June 29th 2005, the Galician Programme for the Treatment and Re-education of convicted gender aggressors who are eligible to parole or supervision orders as an alternative to incarceration. The Programme consist of 52 re-education sessions, 26 individual and 26 group, that are undertaken over a one-year period as well as the mandatory minimum one-year follow-up intervention programme designed to curtail the number of re-offenders. The programme is based on a multimodal (cognitive and behavioural) and multilevel intervention model (e.g., individual, group, social network, employment) (Arce and Fariña, 2005a) that has proven to be more effective than partial intervention approaches. Objective. To identify personal, cultural, and institutional factors that hinder the solution to domestic violence. Material and Methods. In Quintana Roo, Coahuila, and Mexico City, 26 in-depth interviews with women currently suffering from intimate partner violence and others who had already found a solution were carried out, between May and November 2003. Results. Among women's explanations to violence, it was possible to distinguish between causes (non intentional violence) and motives (intentional violence). Associated with these explanations, issues related to tolerance emerge, as well as attribution of responsibility. Moreover, the social ties of the women contribute to the acting out of gender roles and the justification or tolerance of conjugal abuse. Conclusions. The dominant values and norms of gender in society, shared by abused women and the community, are responsible for the perpetuation of intimate partner violence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
