Our objective was to recognized the natural and cultural diversity of the Archaeological Complex (AC) of Narihuala, Piura region, Peru. We performed ten visits to the complex between may and june 2023. We applied specific methodologies for archaeological recognition, botanical collections and bird diversity identification, applying the transect and intensive search methods through scrubland, grassland and forest remnant in the routes of the immediate vicinity of the archaeological complex. For the determination and categorization of species, we used specialized standards and literature for each taxon evaluated. The AC of Narihuala is located near the town of Narihuala and It has architecture in mud and mud blocks belonging to the Early Intermediate Period, Late Intermediate Period, Late Horizon and it consists of eight sectors. The flora was represented by 36 species, belonging to 33 genera and 20 families. Likewise, 10 species of birds distributed in 9 families and 8 orders were registered. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Urban green spaces play a fundamental role in bird conservation in cities. Although the role of urban parks in conserving bird diversity has been explored on a global scale, the analysis of the role of cemeteries has been scarcer. This study aimed to describe and compare the seasonal dynamic of different components of avian taxonomic diversity and composition in two types of urban green areas, parks and cemeteries, in the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires (Argentina). Birds were counted at fixed counting points of 100 m radius in three parks and three cemeteries, and rarefaction curves were used to compare their taxonomic diversity between parks and cemeteries during the breeding and non-breeding seasons. In general, bird diversity (measured as species richness and Shannon and Simpson diversity index) was higher in cemeteries than in parks and during the breeding season, showing greater variation in cemeteries. Bird composition changed between seasons, with Zenaida auriculata being the most common species during the breeding season and Myiopsitta monachus the most abundant during the non-breeding season. However, the composition of the avian community (the most common and abundant species) was similar between parks and cemeteries. Our results suggest that cemeteries are green spaces of great importance since they add heterogeneity to the urban landscape, providing a greater diversity of micro-habitats capable of housing a higher number of species than parks. Urbanization has transformed the landscape affecting ecosystems around the planet. To provide scientific evidence for the conservation of birds in urban environments, we evaluated bird community responses to local habitat and landscape variables in Santiago city, the capital of Chile. We evaluated 118 sites (1 km² in size) distributed throughout the city, which varied in cover and aggregation of woody cover. At each site, we recorded birds and environmental variables at four sampling points during the breeding and non-breeding seasons. Using community indices (Shannon’s diversity and Pielou’s evenness), we quantified the effect of landscape variables (percent and aggregation of woody vegetation cover) on the bird community. Then, we identified bird guilds, categorized according to diet, foraging substrate, nest substrate and body size. Using canonical correspondence analyses, we observed relationships between bird guilds and environmental variables quantified at the local and landscape scales. We recorded 42 species of birds. We found more diverse and equitable bird communities the higher the cover and aggregation of woody vegetation in the landscape. Granivorous and ground foraging birds dominated the assemblage, being positively associated with the built environment. Vegetation cover at the local and landscape scale had positive effects on most of the identified guilds, including invertebrate-feeding birds, omnivores, carnivores, nectarivores, vegetation foragers, vegetation nesters, ground nesters, nest parasites, medium-sized, and very large birds. Our results show that the bird community responds to environmental variables at local and landscape scales. Greater vegetation cover in cities would contribute to greater diversity and evenness of the bird community, promoting the abundance of different guilds, including those sensitive to the built environment. The Laguna del Caney in the Municipality of Chinácota, Norte de Santander, Colombia, is a place frequently visited by different species of birds, especially some ducks and herons. It’s due the birds find food and a place to rest and reproduce. However, the community of birds that visit this lagoon is unknown. Thus, both bird diversity and its community structure were determined through a rapid sampling of direct observation. The specific diversity of bird species was obtained, this was 19, which are grouped into 9 orders and 13 families. The most common species was Dendrocygna autumnalis (38%), followed by Jacana jacana (17%) and Columbina talpacoti (10%). In addition, the Shannon diversity was found to be 8.59, and the Simpson diversity was 5.11. Also, for the first time, the duck species Anas andium (3%) is reported in a lagoon located at an altitude of 1000 m.a.s.l. In Colombia. Currently, the factors that may be influenced the behavior of the species are unknown, so this work opens the door to new ecological research on this species of waterfowl. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Birds are the most diverse group of vertebrates, who through flight can move small to long distances, however their distributions can be constrained by environmental variables such as temperature and precipitation which change with altitude in the Andes. The objective of the study was to determine the richness and abundance of birds for vegetation types across an altitude gradient. Bird species and abundance were measured using point counts and by total counting, supplemented by opportunistic records, surveys were conducted in October 2015. We recorded 102 conspicuous bird species of which eight are endemic species reported for Peru. The greatest richness of bird species was between 2,000 and 3,000 m, but there were differences in the distribution pattern of species richness between water-associated habitats against non water-associated habitats. We concluded that bird diversity from the Chillón valley is influenced by altitude and this pattern is representative of the western slope of central Peru. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study is based on the studies of herbaceous plants, birds and coleoptera that were carried out between 1998 and 2001 in the Lachay National Reserve, and is based on the interest of generating a biological early warning of the El Niño event. The present study incorporated two samples for beetles in 2002 and two samples for each group in 2010. The objective of the research was to evaluate the variation of the biotic variables of the three biological groups under the El Niño Event between 1998-2001 and 2010, to identify indicator variables of the El Niño Event. In the plots, composition, abundance, diversity, and functional groups were estimated. In addition, for herbaceous plants, vegetation cover, density, IVI and Cinv were evaluated. Some variables (Cinv Abundance, Cinv Coverage, Cinv IVI native and/or endemic and in vegetation coverage) suggest a positive relationship with the Global Niño because they increase after its manifestation, from a very strong to moderate El Niño event, favoring the appearance of endemic herbaceous species. Other variables proposed for monitoring are the abundance and richness of beetles, alpha diversity and richness of birds, as well as the percentage of abundance of chamaephytes, the percentage of abundance of nanophanerophytes, and the abundance of predatory group. Some key species are Croton ruizianus, Trixis cacalioides, Crassula connata, Fuertesimalva peruviana, Nicotiana paniculata, and IVIg as key variable. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Portachuelo Pass is an open area used by a great diversity of bird species, either as residents or for seasonal or migratory movements, reporting 32 species of hummingbirds in the Trochilidae family. Due to this, our goal was evaluating the hummingbird assemblage dynamics in Portachuelo Pass, analyzing the abundance of the captures over four years of sampling and comparing these data with samples taken between 1990 and 2013. Monthly field trips were made from April 1990 to November 1994, and from June 2010 to November 2013, between 5 and 8 mist-nets were used to catch the birds. 14 685 individuals were captured, belonging to 25 species. The relative abundance per species was estimated in each of the sampling months, separating the community into four groups: A) Hummingbirds with high abundances, B) Hummingbirds with low abundances, C) Hummingbirds rare and D) Phaethornithinae. The species with the highest abundance populations were: Heliodoxa leadbeateri and Sternoclyta cyanopectus, followed by Aglaiocercus kingi, Chalybura buffoni, Chrysuronia oenone and Coeligena coeligena. For the rest of the species the densities in the mist-net captures were from low to medium. Based on the results obtained, the community of hummingbirds in the area of Portachuelo can be divided into: six highly abundant species that are observed throughout all or most of the year, seven species that use the passage during most of the year but with low densities, four species that use the area in a seasonal manner and seven rare species in the catches due to the type of sampling, or that do not present displacement movements and prefer other habitats. Statistically significant differences were found between the abundance of hummingbirds of sampling years, being the year with the highest abundance 1991, followed by 2013. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The birds of the National Botanical Garden of Cuba have been under study since the 80s, however, in recent years they have attracted lots of attention, due to the gradual increase in the diversity of the birds on the site and their stability, which attracts great number of birdwatchers and researchers. For this reason there is currently a large volume of accumulated and scattered information in relation to the current composition of the bird assemblage in the site. This work offers an updated list of birds in the JBN registered between 1983 and 2019, its frequency and the families to which they belong. For this porpoise, the publications (n = 7), thesis (n = 4), the counts made by the authors (n = 121) and the ebird lists (n = 91) were used. There are 105 species belonging to 35 families, including eight endemic species from Cuba, 12 endemic from the Caribbean and four with some degree of threat. The importance of the National Botanical Garden for the conservation of birds in the region is evident; for more than half, 61 species (58 %) are migratory or have a migratory component while 33 (31%) are nesting in the garden. We applied specific methodologies for archaeological recognition, botanical collections and bird diversity identification, applying the transect and intensive search methods through scrubland, grassland and forest remnant in the routes of the immediate vicinity of the archaeological complex. For the determination and categorization of species, we used specialized standards and literature for each taxon evaluated. The AC of Kuelap is located near the town of El Tingo and has a stoneedged architecture that belongs to the Early Intermediate Period, Late Intermediate Period, Late Horizon and it consists of eight sectors. The flora was represented by 147 species, belonging to115 genera and 67 families. Eleven flora species were endemic of Peru. Centropogon saltuum is a new record to Peru. The orchids Epidendrum blepharistes, E. secundum and E. ventricosum are found in Appendix II of CITES. Likewise, 53 species of birds distributed in 20 families and 6 orders were registered. From September 2015 to August 2016, a monthly evaluation was carried out in the six lakes that are part of Lucre Huacarpay wetland (Quispicanchi / Cusco / Perú) aiming to analyze temporal and spatial variation in the abundance and diversity of birds. For this period, 84 species of birds have been registered,included in 14 orders, 29 families, and 67 genres. Regarding the degree of residence, 63 were residents, 4 were temporary, 5 were occasional and 12 were migratory. The lake with the highest species richness and highest values of alfa index diversity was Waskar. The months with the highest species richness were September 2015 and February 2016, with 57 species in each one. The Chao-2 estimator indicates that 84.2% of the total species likely to occur in the area during the evaluation period was registered. The analysis of variance of the Shannon-Wiener diversity index and Tukey-b test among the lakes indicate that Unkapampa has the lowest alfa diversity and differs from the others. The five species with the highest abundance were Zonotrichia capensis (10.34%), Chroicocephalus serranus (9.47%), Fulica ardesiaca (8.23%), Catamenia analis (6.27%) and Gallinula galeata (5.92%). General changes in land use have established patterns of modification of native vegetation into agricultural and grazing land. These production systems, as well as social and economic influences, have created diverse landscapes - mosaics composed of varied elements of vegetation cover (forests, crops, pastures, barren fields) that are distributed across spaces in different ways. In this investigation, we determine the distribution patterns of the richness, abundance and diversity of the bird community within the configuration and composition of agroforestry and silvopastoral landscapes. We observed 262 bird species, 6 720 individuals, 23 orders and 54 families within 39 production system mosaics. None of the species accumulation curves in the production systems reached their asymptote, and the calculated estimators predicted a greater number of species than those observed during the survey. In general terms, richness, diversity and equitability indices were highest in the mosaics of agroforestry systems, while abundance and dominance indices were highest in the mosaics associated with silvopastoral and traditional livestock systems. Variables that describe vegetation cover in mosaics have different and independent effects on the diversity of bird assemblages and on the association of land use groups within the mosaics. The positive extreme of the first component contributes to the variance in the model of richness and diversity indices - both the structural components of landscapes and biological components of the assemblages. The area and disposition of different types of elements in the mosaics of the production system landscapes reflect the systematic management of covers, which affects the implications of landscape conservation and restoration practices. Different landscape elements serve as points of contact in the dispersion and distribution of species within these landscapes. The priority of conservation efforts and the first step for the restoration and connectivity of landscapes in the Andean Amazon of Colombia should be the management and protection of covers like old stubble or BFG and BRP. Fragmentation of natural habitats is a central concern of biodiversity conservation and is considered a significant factor contributing to species loss and populations decline. We studied this in Cotové Agricultural Center in the municipality of Santa Fe de Antioquia (Colombia),where the conversion of natural forests to different land use systems, has limited the amount of available habitat. With the aim to describe the effect of habitat loss on bird presence in five land uses (fruiting trees, silvopastoral systems, secondary forest, pasture low density of trees and grass cutting) in this area, we studied bird diversity using two methods: fixed point counts and mist nets to analyze the influence of land use in the composition, richness and abundance of birds present were studied. A total of 6 633 individuals of 101 species were observed of which 11 species were migratory. The insectivorous and frugivorous foraging guilds were better represented. The Shannon index indicated the highest values of alpha diversity for the silvopastoral system, and the fruit with the lowest. The grazing and silvopastoral land systems shared more species with low tree density. The importance of the environmental heterogeneity found is highlighted as a positive factor for bird species richness, mostly of low and middle habitat specificity, and preferably from edge habitats and open areas. in order to preserve natural regeneration and connectivity between different land use types, and to promote stability of bird species populations, some management actions should be implemented in the area. Between 2008 and 2010, I conducted an inventory of birds in the municipality of Nanacamilpa, Tlaxcala. One hundred twenty-nine bird species were recorded by visual and hearing observations, as well as through catches and photographic records. Information for each species includes information on seasonal status, endemism, conservation status, and habitats used. Fourteen records are noteworthy because they expand the geographical distribution, representing additions to the Tlaxcala avifauna. Coniferous forest showed the highest species richness (68), and the highest species richness and diversity values in the dry (44 species, H'= 3.22 E'= 0.97, λ= 0.049) and rainy (32 species, H'= 3.10, E= 0.93, λ= 0.040) seasons as well. No significant differences were found between of species richness and diversity values between seasons (P> 0.05). Only significant differences were found between coniferous forest and crops, urban and suburban areas, zacatonal with remnant forest and grazing/pasture (P< 0.05). Coniferous forest in Nanacamilpa should be considered a priority area for the conservation of birds, especially of endemic and listed at risk species, as it is one of the habitats being subject to strong anthropogenic pressure. Mexican coastal and inland wetlands are an important habitat for birds. The loss and degradation of wetlands have been the main threat to birds. Currently, the number of individuals of each bird species found in wetlands is unknown. Thus, the aim of this study was to determine the diversity and abundance of birds in a wetland of northern Veracruz, the Tumilco's mangrove forest. Distance sampling method and direct observation were used to determine bird diversity and abundance in the mangrove. A total of 63 surveys were done with an effort of 386 effective hours, conducting 274 transects (1 km long) across the study area. A total of 56 birds pecies belonging to 23 families were recorded. There were six species found listed in the NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010, of which the most abundant species was Anas platyrhynchos diazi and less representative Falco peregrinus. The birds' abundance estimated for the entire study area was 5945 individuals (coefficient interval at 95% = 5035; CV = 7.25%) and a density of 0.526 birds/ha (coefficient interval at 95% = 0.49; CV = 7.25%).
