This article seeks to recognize Peasant Guards (Guardias Campesinas) as a communal institution with an impact on self-protection and the management of rural conflicts in the context of war and amidst the implementation of the Final Peace Agreement in Colombia. I argue that Peasant Guards are protagonists in initiatives to build a model of comunal security for peasant territories. Peasant guards can strengthen the construction of a comunal security model within the framework of current state building efforts in Colombia, especially in the context of the construction of Territorial Peace. I present a case study of the experience of the Peasant Guards of Pradera (Valle del Cauca), based on interviews, archival research and fieldwork. The article underscores the need for institutional recognition of the Peasant Guards as a mechanism for self-protection and care of the peasant territory. Rethinking the existing security model in rural territories is a fundamental contribution to the construction of Territorial Peace. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
