COVID-19 pandemic , *ORGANIZATIONAL behavior , *SOCIAL networks , *COVID-19 vaccines , *TRUST , *ANTI-vaccination movement - Abstract
The research aimed to identify the behavior of organizations promoting vaccine rejection through Facebook in the context of the Covid-19 vaccination campaign. To achieve the study's purpose, the posts with the highest number of reactions on Facebook were observed and analyzed, as well as the content of these posts and the ways in which anti-vaccine organizations presented their messages on their fan pages. A digital social listening tool was used to analyze the data, providing information on the ranking of published messages, interactions reached, and sentiment assessments. The research found that anti-vaccine organizations used Facebook as one of the communication channels to disseminate messages that contradicted health measures, questioned the legality of vaccination, and opposed the use of masks. In other words, this social network served as a platform to spread messages that distorted the truth of the facts and encouraged various actions against vaccination campaigns. Therefore, during the Covid-19 pandemic, this social network became a crucial information medium for the population, but it was also the most used medium by anti-vaccine organizations to spread misinformation and generate negative emotions among users, ultimately eroding their trust. JOURNALISM , *INFORMATION resources , *POLITICAL communication , *MEDICAL communication , *COMMUNICATION models , *COVID-19 pandemic , *SOCIAL reality , *ANTI-vaccination movement , *ARTIFICIAL intelligence , *DIGITAL media , *TELEVISION dramas - Abstract
The aim of the study is to describe the images that accompanied information about the Covid-19 pandemic, vaccination and treatment of the virus in the following digital news media: ABC, Deia, EITB.eus, El Correo, elDiario.es, El Mundo, La Razón, La Vanguardia, Naiz and Público (20202022). A sample of 15,654 single images was studied, of which 15 clusters were identified with Artificial Intelligence techniques, including the algorithm Inception V3. The analysis is based on the combined use of a series of innovative techniques within the field of Communication. This methodology involves a large data set of images, along with the use of AI techniques such as embeddings. We opted for an unsupervised strategy, typical of exploratory and inductive research. Among the results, the identification of different typologies of images used by the medical and health-oriented media, representations of death and of the human drama caused by the pandemic, linked to the more political and economic dimension of the vaccination campaign, stands out. The images analyzed are part of 'political communication': a communication model that seeks and reinforces the relationship between the government and the media, and vice versa, to generate confidence in the management and in the system itself. The diversity of approaches observed is a positive value as it contributes to establish a more multifaceted and richer operational social reality. The media show different preferences when it comes to visually representing the issues, which translates into an unequal distribution of the same. The study has identified the different narratives revealing different uses of emotionally charged images that pose a complex scenario. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article highlights the concern that the values and principles of the Global North are not rooted in the Global South. It mentions the example of vaccine patent hoarding for the West during the Covid-19 epidemic, which has led to accusations that human life is valued more in the North than in the South. The importance of multilateralism is emphasized, and it is mentioned that the United Nations represents a factor and a value to be taken into account, although some of its powerful members have acted undisciplined. The article also mentions the war in the Middle East and the concern for violence against Palestinian civilians. It raises the need for multilateral actions to address the reality of the war on terrorism in Israel and the situation in Gaza. The proposed Pact for the Future by Secretary-General António Guterres is highlighted as an opportunity to revitalize multilateralism and address current and future challenges. The importance of multilateral action in the fight against climate change is also emphasized, and the lack of commitment from major greenhouse gas emitters is criticized. Additionally, the need for a rebalancing of power in international relations is mentioned, and the existence of large-scale conflicts between civilizations is raised. In conclusion, a call is made for rationality and the construction of a global political community that promotes human interests and global justice. [Extracted from the article]

SUBNATIONAL governments , *COVID-19 pandemic , *FEDERAL government , *STATE governments , *POLITICAL parties , *PARTISANSHIP , *VACCINES , *ANTI-vaccination movement - Abstract
The article aims to analyze the transformations in the Brazilian federative dialogue emphasizing the relationship between subnational actors (municipalities and states) and the federal government in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. We argue that in this period there was an intensification of disputes between subnational governments and the Bolsonaro government. We consider the hypothesis that, in this scenario, has occurred the redesign of Brazilian paradiplomatic action characterized by disruptive federalism. With the evaluation period between 2020 and 2022, the article aims to investigate the international engagement of mayors and governors in facing the COVID-19 pandemic. In this regard, we focus the analysis on the pandemic, showing the governmental movement and the performance of subnational actors around two axes: a) purchase of equipment and vaccines; and b) bilateral relations with China. We conclude that governors of opposition parties adopted clearer measures to face the pandemic and developed a high level of tension with the federal government, as is the case of the states that constitute the Interstate Consortium for Sustainable Development in the Northeast. However, state governments that started 2019 as Bolsonaro's allies has changed their position and during the epidemiological crisis it became particularly evident, showing that the proposed debate exceeds the political-partisan bias, requiring the consideration of other variables to explain the new conjuncture of Brazilian paradiplomacy. MEDICAL communication , *ANTI-vaccination movement , *VACCINES , *PERSUASION (Psychology) , *RESPONSIBILITY - Abstract
With the anti-vaccine movement, the perception of vaccines as neither safe nor effective is accentuated, influencing the perception and behavior of the population. Understanding the psychosocial mechanisms underlying the "anti-vaccine phenomenon" will allow the development of better intervention programs. This research pursues two objectives: 1) to analyze the Implicit Association Test (IAT) as a neurocommunication tool applied to communication and health, especially in vaccines, and 2) to understand the psychological mechanisms of the vaccine and anti-vaccine concept. The IAT is a useful tool although it presents certain methodological characteristics. There is a strong association of vaccines with health, responsibility and efficacy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

VACCINATION of children , *COVID-19 vaccines , *CORONAVIRUSES , *CONTENT analysis , *COVID-19 , *VACCINES , *ANTI-vaccination movement - Abstract
Introduction: This research has analyzed the visual discourse on Instagram of the European far-right parties in Italy, Germany, France, Spain, Belgium, Austria and Poland on the COVID-19 vaccines carried out during 2021. The main objective has been focused on in discovering the position of these parties regarding the vaccination process against the coronavirus and the use of biased strategies or frames linked to misinformation. Methodology: (N=1050) Instagram posts have been analyzed using visual content analysis. The results show that the European far-right parties studied have not used their Instagram accounts to spread health strategies to alleviate the effects of COVID-19. Results: The contents disseminated have turned out to be individualistic and consistent with the ideals of each party. Except for specific exceptions, in general all the parties have shown a neutral position without being very explicit in their positions. Discussion: What these findings reveal is an inclination not to make decisive speeches that could make them lose voters, despite maintaining a critical position that pretends to be an alternative to the official one. Conclusions: Their main speeches allude to the lack of individual freedom, the voluntariness in the administration of the dose, the rejection of vaccination of children and the denial of the COVID passport. COMMUNICATION patterns , *HOAXES , *DISINFORMATION , *SOCIAL networks , *SOCIAL facts , *ANTI-vaccination movement - Abstract
Introduction: Anti-vaccine disinformation is highly dangerous due to its direct effects on society. Although there is relevant research on typologies of hoaxes, denialist discourses on networks or the popularity of vaccines, this study provides a complementary and pioneering vision about the anti)vaccine discourse of COVID-19 on Twitter, focused on its spreaders’ behavior. Methodology: Given an initial sample of a hundred hoaxes (from December 2020 to September 2021) for the download of 200,246 tweets, around 36,000 tweets (N=36.292) that support or deny disinformation have been filtered through an algorithm for Natural Language Inference (NLI) to analyze their spreaders’ through their metrics in the platform. Results: In relative numbers, the results show, among others, more hoaxes with original content (not retweets) among accounts with more followers and those verified; more irruption of disinformation opposed to its objection by accounts created between 2013 and 2020, and the association of the acknowledgement (more presence in lists or many more followers than followed users) to the preference for denying false information instead of approving it. Discussion: The article shows how the typology of the accounts can be a predictive factor about the behavior of users who spread disinformation. Conclusions: Similar behavioral patterns of anti-vaccine discourse are revealed according to the accounts’ Twitter-related indicators. The size of the sample and the techniques used give a solid foundation for other comparative studies on disinformation about health and on other phenomena on social networks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Despite the fact that vaccination is the most effective way to control and prevent infectious diseases, the growing boom of the anti-vaccine movement has reduced the number of vaccinations and, therefore, represents a serious threat to public health. In this situation, this article analyses the most important ethical-legal aspects related to vaccination, and how they should be taken into account in order to configure the policies on the matter. Beside this, the public vaccination model that would best respond to the ethical problems of vaccination is presented, examining the way in which this model could be developed in the context of our Law. Objective. This article presents the findings of a review of the literature on public resistance to vaccines and the main factors that have influenced their decisions about immunoprevention, with a focus on the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods. We searched the literature using the terms DeCs/MeSH, anti-vaccination movement, vaccination refusal, epidemics, COVID-19, and impacts on health, using the Boolean operators OR and AND in Google Scholar, Medline, Lilacs, and Ibecs. Documents from official sources were also considered. Results. Throughout history, since vaccination began, people have had controversial perceptions of the procedure: some accept what the health authorities recommend, and others allege hidden intentions behind immunization. The COVID-19 vaccine against SARS-CoV-2 has been no exception. Conclusions. Vaccination has been one of the greatest scientific achievements in public health. However, despite its benefits, it has raised fear, uncertainty, and suspicion in the population. For this reason, it is important to increase health education actions in the population--with clear, concise, understandable information that is based on reliable and truthful sources--in order to reduce resistance to vaccination and address preventable diseases. CRITICAL thinking , *ANTI-vaccination movement - Abstract
The book "When bad thinking happens to good people" by Steven Nadler and Lawrence Shapiro addresses the problem of the lack of critical thinking in today's society. Through statistics gathered from Americans, it reveals a lack of general knowledge and an alarming percentage of people with radical beliefs, such as anti-vaxxers. The book aims to help the reader understand the importance of thinking correctly and establishing the differences between good and bad thinking. Additionally, it explores how to have valid arguments, recognize fallacies, and how incorrect thoughts can lead to harmful behaviors. The book concludes that we need philosophy to protect ourselves from harmful thoughts and lead an examined life. [Extracted from the article]

VACCINE hesitancy , *MEASLES vaccines , *VACCINATION mandates , *RISK perception , *ANTI-vaccination movement - Abstract
In Italy, the passing of mandatory pediatric vaccinations in 2017 was a consequence of increasing vaccine hesitancy in the country, a phenomenon that has largely spread on social networks. This article examines risk management and risk perception regarding pediatric vaccinations through an analysis of online content shared by Italian vaccine hesitancy movements between December of 2019 and April of 2020. Results show that these movements carry out a reinterpretation of risk, scientific evidence, and parental responsibility, especially with regard to the alleged correlation between the measles vaccine and autism. The limitations of political decisions surrounding vaccines are due to the application of punitive measures such as administrative penalties and licensing bans for doctors who express “anti-vax” ideas, aspects which may increase distrust towards the political establishment and the medical profession. HUMAN papillomavirus vaccines , *CERVICAL cancer , *ANTI-vaccination movement , *MEDICAL personnel , *HEALTH promotion , *HEALTH policy - Abstract
Cervical cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer in women, with the human papillomavirus (HPV) being its major risk factor. This virus also produces other types of cancer and infections that affect men and women. The HPV vaccine has shown efficacy and safety in its prevention, however, barriers have been evident that decrease its acceptance in communities. The objective of this study is to identify the most effective strategies in community intervention to improve the acceptability of HPV vaccination. A systematic review was conducted in Cochrane, Scopus, Embase, Medline, and Google Scholar from June to July 2019, without time constraints, in English and Spanish. We included clinical trials evaluating strategies to improve HPV vaccination. We reviewed 22 studies evaluating community intervention strategies, and identified mainly three: the use of virtual information and training, involvement of parents and/or caregivers as well as health personnel, and involvement of men and people of diverse sexual orientation as a target population.
