Brazil and Spain have some cultural identities and historical ties. They recently played similar processes from dictatorship to democracy. Both countries are shaped by strong authoritarian traditions, which were supposed to be preserved by the political structures built after the Spanish Civil War and the 1964 Brazilian Military Coup. In spite of tasks that the conservative governments planned to mass media networks during dictatorial regime, they indeed operated as modernizing agencies. Transition to democracy was a route guided by news media and supported by the professional communication staff despite of government censorship and security repression. Press in Spain was called "paper parliament" and television in Brazil was assumed as a "window open to world. " [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
