PHYTOGEOGRAPHY , *VANILLA , *HERBARIA , *MAXIMUM entropy method ,POTENTIAL distribution - Abstract
Wild specimens of Vanilla planifolia represent a vital part of this resource primary gene pool, and some plants have only been reported in Oaxaca, Mexico. For this reason, we studied its geographical distribution within the state, to locate and describe the ecological characteristics of the areas where they have been found, in order to identify potential areas of establishment. The method comprised four stages: 1) the creation of a database with herbarium records, 2) the construction of the potential distribution based on historical herbarium records for the species, using the model of maximum entropy (MaxEnt) and 22 bioclimatic variables as predictors; 3) an in situ systematic search of individuals, based on herbarium records and areas of potential distribution in 24 municipalities, to determine the habitat current situation and distribution; 4) the description of the environmental factors of potential ecological niches generated by MaxEnt. A review of herbarium collections revealed a total of 18 records of V. planifolia between 1939 and 1998. The systematic search located 28 plants distributed in 12 sites in 95 364 Km2. The most important variables that determined the model of vanilla potential distribution were: precipitation in the rainy season (61.9 %), soil moisture regime (23.4 %) and precipitation during the four months of highest rainfall (8.1 %). The species potential habitat was found to be distributed in four zones: wet tropics of the Gulf of Mexico, humid temperate, humid tropical, and humid temperate in the Pacific. Precipitation oscillated within the annual ranges of 2 500 to 4 000 mm, with summer rains, and winter precipitation as 5 to 10 % of the total. The moisture regime and predominating climate were udic type I (330 to 365 days of moisture) and hot humid (Am/A(C) m). The plants were located at altitudes of 200 to 1 190 masl, on rough hillsides that generally make up the foothills of mountain systems, with altitudes of 1 300 to 2 500 masl. In natural conditions, distribution of the species is not limited to high evergreen forests, since it was also found in mountain mesophyll and tropical evergreen forests. The location of new specimens of V. planifolia in its wild condition reduces the potential distribution area by 66 %. This area is fragmented into three geographically separated areas. Habitat reduction was due to the increased number of located plants that define the environmental conditions into a more accurate level. Conservation actions can thus be designed and implemented, focusing on more specific areas within the state of Oaxaca, Mexico. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

TAXUS , *CONIFERS , *PHYTOGEOGRAPHY , *PLANT communities , *FORESTS & forestry - Abstract
To better understand the potential distribution of Taxus globosa Schlecht., we used a conifer species with restricted distribution, listed on the NOM-059-SEMARN AT-2010, a modeling distribution procedure of maximum entropy or MaxEnt, based on 40 occurrences of field records and 39 REMIB -CONABIO records. Two different scenarios of geographical and environmental coverages--climatic and topographic--were proved statistically. The BIOCLIM variables scenario with topography data show a more accurate model in the range of 0.9 to 1.0 probability with a 55% coincidence; it was statistically significant at (AUC=0.985). Slope variable indicates an environmental variable with more influence in potential modeling, followed by Bio14 (Precipitation of Driest Month). In agreement with the MaxEnt analysis with 19 BIOCLIM and 3 topographic variables, the main plant communities in the modeling area (where Taxus globosa is distributed in Mexico) are pine-oak forest, oak-pine forest, pine forest, and cloud mesic forest. Taxus globosa is potentially distributed in Hidalgo, Nuevo León, Puebla, Tamaulipas, and Veracruz. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

PHYTOGEOGRAPHY , *AQUATIC plants , *MONOCOTYLEDONS , *WETLANDS - Abstract
A review of the information on the richness and distribution of the Mexican aquatic and wetland (herbaceous) monocots, is presented, for the purpose of contributing to a better understanding of the flora distributed in the wetlands of the national territory. Three hundred eighty one species (392 taxa) belonging to 104 genera and 28 families, considered as strict aquatics or wetland plants, were registered; as well as 114 tolerant or facultative hydrophytes of lacustrine and pond habitats. Half of the 28 families correspond to taxa considered by most botanists as terrestrial, but they represent a large component of the Mexican aquatic flora (71% of the genera and 75% of the species). The endemics make up 14% of the monocots. Their presence throughout a great diversity of habitats and its representation in several vegetation types and communities, make them one on the most diverse ecological and geographical components in the American continent. About 46% of the species belong to meridional elements, while 25% correspond to boreal one; while the Mexican element (13.9%) is equivalent to the sum of the cosmopolitan and introduced species. Eleven populations of Taxus globosa were located and evaluated along of the Sierra Madre Oriental in the States of Nuevo Leon and Tamaulipas, Mexico. A complete inventory of the individuals in all Taxus globosa populations was recorded; data of height, diameter, canopy cover and density were also evaluated. The population data were organized in databases on rank classes into six height categories, seven canopies cover categories and seven diameter categories. A χ² test indicates that all the populations showed a normal distribution. The canopy cover and diameter variables showed higher values in correlation analysis (r = 0.9). The population curve tendency on height, canopy cover and diameter shows that isolated or inaccessible populations of Taxus globosa Las Tinajas, Julilo and La Camotera are the populations with more young individuals than the rest of the northeastern populations. The pedregal of Arócutin, with a surface area of approximately 31 km², is located in the Lake Pátzcuaro basin, in the northern portion of the Mexican state of Michoacán. This region belongs to the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt physiographic province. The vegetation found is an oak forest in different stages of succesion, intermixed with elements of tropical deciduous forest. The structure and floristic composition of each association is described. Intense botanical exploration for a period of two years resulted in the collection of 407 species of vascular plants, belonging to 262 genera and 96 families; these represent 38.76% of the total number of species in the Lake Patzcuaro basin. The most diverse families are: Compositae with 60 species, Leguminosae with 27, Labiatae with 19, and Gramineae with 18. Comparing the floristic list of the pedregal of Arócutin with those of three other outcrops of basaltic rocks along the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt, using the Sörensen similarity index, we found that the Arócutin and Huaniqueo pedregals are the most closely related, both at generic arid specific level. This is followed by the pedregal of San Ángel in Mexico City and finally the pedregal of Chichinautzin, Morelos. Additionally, traditional uses of some plants are recorded. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BIODEGRADATION , *PHYTOGEOGRAPHY - Abstract
In this document we studied the autocorrelation of lost, degraded and recovered vegetal covered areas in the State of Durango, Mexico. Data coming from a 1993 to 2002 monitoring study were analyzed by means of the Moran' s coefficient. A graphical analysis using dispersion diagrams and a spatial associate local indicator was included. The results show randomly produced index values. Nevertheless, in a comparative way, it was observed that the lost areas show a larger auto-correlation index than the areas with degradation and recovery of the vegetal cover (0.1 1, -0.01 7 y 0.01 1, respectively), and concludes that the spatial distribution changes with the scale, therefore it is recommended to evaluate its trend in different spatial positions. The tropical dry forest is an ecosystem under strong human pressure. It is found both inland and on coastal dunes. The objective of this research is to identify native tree and palm species growing on dunes that are used by local communities. In this research we carried out surveys and interviews among residents of San Isidro and Colonia La Mancha, in the coast of Veracruz on the use of trees of the tropical dry forest on dunes. Among the 55 registered species, Cedrela odorata, Diphysa robinioides, Enterolobium cyclocarpum, Bursera simaruba, Gliricidia sepium, Tabebuia rosea, Chrysobalanus icaco, Guazuma ulmifolia, Acacia cochliacantha, Brosimum alicastrum, Bumelia celastrina, Cocos nucifera, Maclura tinctoria, Piscidia piscipula, Spondias mombin and Ficus spp. were mentioned by more people. Eighteen uses were recorded, being the most frequent construction of houses (119 mentions), posts for fences and live fences (99), firewood (72) and food (48). Four of the uses mentioned refer to environmental services provided by these plants in the dunes. The species with higher number of uses is Gliricidia sepium and Bursera simaruba is the species in which more parts are used, followed by Gliricidia sepium, Guazuma ulmifolia and Brosimum alicastrum. We also inquired about the parts of the tree being used, the frequency, their sale and local price. Based on the results we suggest a group of species that can be used to increase species tree richness in the secondary growths and grassland on dunes, which will provide wood, forage, etc., to the local inhabitants and help maintain the tree cover of the dunes. The effect of land use on the structural diversity of Tamaulipan thornscrub in northeastern Mexico was examined. The objective was to determine whether land use modified diversity, ecological indicators, structural and vertical distribution of trees and shrubs. The analysis was performed by comparing three ecosystems with different land use history: extensive cattle grazing, traditional agriculture and clear cutting with 21 year of abandonment. The methodology used was a combination of rectangular sites and a sampling analysis called "structural group of four trees". Results showed differences in diversity, ecological indicators, vertical distribution and dimensional structure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A morphological description of the genus Mimophytum greenm. (Boraginaceae) is provided, as well as a dichotomous key to the species and ecological and distributional information. The genus is endemic to the Sierra Madre Oriental of Mexico. morphological descriptions for the two species are provided. One of them, M. benitomartinezii, is proposed as new to science. It differs from M. omphalodoides in that the stems are rhizomatous-stoloniferous, the upper leaf surfaces are glabrous, the leaf blades possess 3 basal nerves, the inlorescence is an ebracteate, scorpioid cyme, the pedicels are shorter, and the fruits have glochids forming a ring around the edges.
