Anophthalmic patient exhibit a great physical, psyckic, and social effect, this disease must be treated in a multidisciplinary way, our effects must be targeted at accomplishing the best aesthetic and functional results so that patients can join society again as soon as possible. The lack or loss of the eye ball from whatever etiology becomes a very complex situation to the patient, the patient relative, and also to the ophthalmologist treating the patient. To achieve an acceptable prosthetic rehabilitation, it is necessary for us all to work very closely together. Our objective is to characterize the aesthetic and functional results achieved from inserting HAP-200 implants at the Ramon Pando Ferrer OCI, in surgical anophthalmo, year 2009. This is a descriptive, longitudinal, and prospective study. 17 Patients sing who went to Ramon Pando Ferrer OCI, 2009 to receive oculoplastic treatment in consulting room number one. Variables, age groups, sex, mediate postoperation complications, implant movements, upper eyelid's groove preservation, prosthetic movements and eyelid fissure symmetry were studied. Primary data were through interviews, preoperation inquiries, operation reports, and postoperation follow-up inquiries after 24 hours, 15 days, 1month, 3months, and 6 months. The most outstanding results were as follow: Prevalence of the 21 to 40 years old age group, male sex, minimal mediates postoperations complications, and a satisfactory aesthetic and functional clinical evolution in most cases. Coralline Porous Hydroxyapatite HAP-200 is a biomaterial for bone implants developed for more than 15 years in Cuba and it has been applied with success as bone graft substitute and as integrated ocular implant. In this paper we report summarized information of the main results obtained in the development stage and clinical applications of this product. This biomaterial in the shape of blocks and spheres with different dimensions as well as granulated with different sizes of the particles has been evaluated keeping in mind all the parameters of its clinical and preclinical behavior according to the evaluation and registration standards of biomaterials of the CCEEM at the MINSAP of Cuba. They have been carriying out several protocols of clinical trials, as controlled as multicentrics, of postproduction and study of the clinical behavior at long term, of introduction in the national system of health as well as studies and design of the productive system and of management of the quality that endorse the obtainment several certificates of registry in Cuba and in some foreign countries and abroad as well as the certificates of good manufacture practice. During the 15 years of clinical applications in Cuba 9 613 patients have been treated in odontology and maxilofacial surgery specialties, 783 people have received ocular implant and 2 592 have been treated on bony defects of the long bones and others in orthopedics and traumatology. Only 3,2 % of failure has been reported and the causes are associated to the surgical treatment and in any case caused by the biomaterial, demonstrating that the latter has an excellent biocompatibility with integration and incorporation to the natural dynamics of the bone tissue. With the objective to evaluate the feasibility of the use of FAMACHA© color card in the detection of anemia, 70 goats were used. These animals were grazed in a silvopastoral system around 9 hours daily (Dichrostachys cinerea- complex Dichantium spp., Brotriochloa spp.). During 2 month, the colour of the ocular mucosa was determined (CMO) according to the scale of FAMACHA© color card. Besides, faecal and blood samples were extracted from each animals to determine the faecal strongyle egg count, genera by coprocultures and packed cell volume (PCV) through centrifugation. The correlation coefficient (Spearman) between the VCA and the values FAMACHA© card was -0, 58. Sensitivity and specificity for 4 and 5 FAMACHA© card values and PCV =19% as indicator of anemia were 91% and 62.4%, respectively. The predictive value of a negative case was of 91.3%, whereas the predictive value of a positive case value was 45, 7%. On the other hand, the animals with category 4 and 5 showed the highest faecal egg count, but no differences among groups were detected. The results indicate that the FAMACHA methodology© can be a useful tool in the detection of anemia in goats under our condition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In order to evaluate FAMACHA® eye colour chart to determine anaemia in sheep as indispensable step for the establishment of this methodology in the control of haemonchosis under Cuban conditions, 66 Pelibuey sheeps with six months of age and body weight average of 24 kg infested by gastrointestinal strongyles with a high presence of Haemonchus spp., were used. The colour of the ocular conjunctive (COC) was determined through the FAMACHA card which has five points in the scale. Samples of blood and faeces were extracted from each animal in order to determine the packed cell volume (PCV) and the faecal egg count (FEC). The correlation between the COC and the PCV was inverse (p <0,01). Animals were considered anaemic if PCV =19. Sensitivity and the specificity were high (75 and 100%, respectively) for the four and five values of the FAMACHA® scale. The predictive value of a negative case was high (superior to 99%) while the predictive value of the positive one was 100%. Animals with category four presented the highest faecal count of eggs. The results indicate that FAMACHA® methodology is a useful tool under these conditions to detect anaemia in grazing sheep. Objective: To determine damage presence and predictors factors lot its appearance in a cohort of cuban patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Patients and methods: A retrospective cohort study included 80 patients presenting with SLE seen in Rheumatology Service of "Hermanos Ameijeiras" Clinical Surgical Hospital in Havana City, Cuba. Damage was assessed using The Systemic Lupus International Collaborating Clinics/American College of Rheumatology (ACR) Damage Index (SLIC/ACR), a tool approved for damage measurement. Damage presence was related to initial disease features to diagnose this condition, to sociodemographic elements. to treatments used. and to the disease course time. Statistical analysis had two variants: the univariate and multivariate type using Chi2 and statistical significance was established in p < 0, 05. Results: We found that 39 patients (48.8%) had some degree of damage. More involved domains were the musculoskeletal (18.8%), neuropsychiatric, and skin. 16,3%, pulmonary and ocular, present in 15% of cases. In the multivariate analysis, damage was associated with the use of higher than 30 mg/day Predrisone doses for more of 4 weeks COR-54,68, CI 95% = 3,56-97,45, p = 0.001), presence of leukopenia (RO 18,73. CI 95% = 2,74-62,23 m p = 0,004). and time course of disease (OR = 1.02. CI 95% - 1,00 2-1.09, p = 0.006). Conclusions: Damage was practically present in half of the study patients, the most involved domain was the musculosketetal, and use of higher than 30 mg prednisone doses were the factor most associated with the presence of damage. The presence of the genus Philophthalmus has been identify for first time in Cuba from the physical examination of a semi rustic fowl in a Guantanamo backyard. The animal was clinically explored and showed hyperemia on conjunctival and eyelid mucosa of both eyes together with the presence of 13 trematodes which were fixed in formalin-alcohol solution for morphometrical studies under stereoscope. The parasites showed morphometric characteristics compatible with Philophthalmus sp. One of the helminth were macerated and eggs similar to those described for this genus were observed.
