Knowledge of the importance of sources of variation (VF) in multi-environment testing (PEA) is of great importance in the final stage of breeding programs. The objective of this research was to evaluate the statistical significance and contribution of VF: environments (E), genotypes (G) and GxE interaction of PEA's in cotton for fiber length (LONG), uniformity (UNIF), resistance (RESIS), elongation (ELON) and finesse (FINE), in the dry (CS) and humid (CH) Colombian Caribbean. The data from four PEA's were used, where 10 different medium fiber genotypes were evaluated, under the randomized complete block design with four replicates. Each PEA was made up of four tests carried out in the 2003/2004 (CS and CH), 2007/2008 (CS) and 2009/2010 (CH) harvests. The results indicate that on average G was the most important source in significance (p<0.05 and p<0.01) for all fiber quality properties and variation (>34%) of the combined variance analyses for LONG, UNIF, RESIS and ELON, with a similar trend in their behavior between them and in the two zones of the Colombian Caribbean. For FINU the A (61.9%) was the source that contributed the most to the variation in CS and G (37.9%) CH. The variation in data due to A did not have a significant effect on fiber quality variables, so it is not suggested to increase assays per PEA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
