Acne is a very common inflammatory skin disease, especially in adolescents and young adults, it has a chronic evolution that can lead to the formation of scars and hyperpigmentation. The pathogenesis of acne covers four aspects: hyper seborrhea, altered keratinization of the pilosebaceous duct, proliferation of Cutibacterium acnes, and inflammation. Recent studies highlight that inflammation is critical in the formation, development, and resolution of acne. Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin mainly metabolized in the epidermis, with regulatory effects on the immune system, actions on the proliferation and differentiation of keratinocytes and sebocytes, and anti-comedogenic and antioxidant properties; therefore, vitamin D deficiency may be involved in the development of acne and possibly provide a new option for the treatment of this disease.
