In wireless sensor networks applications, events occur occasionally; therefore, the design of protocols has been focused on saving energy mainly. As consequence of this protocol design strategy most of these energy-efficient protocols limit the use of wireless sensor networks to those applications where a fast response time and the bandwidth are not important. This paper proposes the LEMR-multichannel protocol (Latency, Energy, MAC and Routing, for its acronym in English). LEMR-multichannel is a communication protocol based on a multilayer design which involves the physical, medium access and network layer, which not only preserves the energy efficiency of current protocols but also coordinates the transfer of packets from source to destination in such a way that the network performance in terms of bandwidth, delay and jitter is improved significantly. The LEMR-multichannel superiority in terms of these variables is shown when it is compared with other well-known protocols (TMAC and YMAC), through several simulation experiments.
