This paper deals with an interesting theme for information professionals, which is the service historically offered to foster scientific research. During the XIXth century the Francisco de Zabálburu Library developed a large activity in spreading and communicating knowledge on social sciences and humanities. This paper to provides a state of art discussion of general elite theory by developing a taxonomy of the academic literature on this topic, based upon theoretical and historical criteria, and by discussing recent analytical tendencies in Latin America concerning the problem of intellectuals and technocrats.
