Abstract
Introduction: This paper states the need for comprehensive and humanized care in the care of the oncological patient. Method: We present a theoretical reflection on relevant issues related to humanization: on the one hand, what it is and how interventions can be implemented from a humanizing approach, and on the other hand, communication as a key tool in the professionalpatient relationship. From a practical perspective, we present our experience based on the development of the Humanization Plan we carried out at the Hospital Fundación General de la Santísima Trinidad in Salamanca (Spain). Results: We present the humanization initiatives we developed in the hospital grouped in three blocks; a) the hospital environment and the treatment room as a health space; b) the relationship with the team of professionals and communication with patients and their families; c) the management and occupation of time in the treatment room. Conclusions: The difficulty in establishing quality standards in humanization makes it difficult to determine the degree of success of the interventions and to draw conclusions in this regard. In our case, the achievements are endorsed mainly by the satisfaction and gratitude expressed by patients and companions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
