Introduction. The current globalized world expresses important challenges for nursing care, so that the suffering is recognized and relieved taking into account the patient’s culture. Objective. To describe the fin¬dings of research into experiences of hospital nurses about compassion and care to culturally diverse people. Method. Systematic review. The searches were conducted in: Web of Science, CINAHL, OVID Nursing, Evidence Based Medicine Reviews, Medline (PubMed), PsycARTICLES, Virtual Health Library, CUIDEN Plus, TripDatabase, Epistemonikos and Descubridor de la Universidad Nacional de Colombia. A total of 83 searches were conducted with MeSH, DeCS and natural language terms, including research or review articles with qualitative approaches, published in Spanish, English or Portuguese. Results. 42 papers were included, with a predominance of phenomenological, ethnographic and grounded theory designs. These reflect the link between compassion and care for culturally diverse people, developed through three themes, and 14 sub-themes. Conclusion. The experiences of nurses and patients are diverse, but the connection between compassion and cultural competence in nursing care in the clinical setting is visible. This systematization shows educational and training needs, demonstrates the tensions between personal, professional and institutional culture. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
