In this work, we study the existence of solutions of two nonlinear resonant ordinary functionaldifferential equations. In the first place, we consider an abstract second order problemunder Neumann boundary conditions arising on an electro-diffusion model. Thisproblem has the particularity that the nonlinear term depends on the Dirichlet values ofthe yet-to-be-determined solution. We shall prove the existence of solutions by adaptingthe classical Landesman-Lazer conditions for the scalar case, and a condition by Nirenbergfor a system of equations. In the second place, we study a first order Nicholson typeequation with several delays. We shall prove the existence of a positive periodic solutionboth for the scalar equation and for a system. Also, we shall prove an stability result. Inboth cases, the nonlinear term is a functional operator and the problems are resonant inthe sense that the associated linear operators have nontrivial kernel. Our main tool forproving existence of solutions shall be Mawhin’s coincidence degree, which is a generalizationof Leray-Schauder degree. There are, however, some cases in which this theorycannot be applied: for example, the case of a boundary value problem on the half-line,for which we adapt the method of upper and lower solutions combined with a diagonalargument. The complex vocalizations composing birdsong emerge from the interaction between the nervous system and a nonlinear peripheral device, its vocal organ. It is an area of intensive work to elucidate how much of the complexity of it is due to the huge dimensionality of the dynamics of the nervous system, and how much due to the mechanical response of the periphery. This last point is of particular interest for applied physics, as bio-mechanic systems used by living things are overwhelmingly non-linear, and capable of presenting complex behaviors even as a response to simple instructions. We present a bio-prosthetic device based on a model for the zebra finch vocal organ, which is capable of producing the subtleties present in the actual song of the birds. This model is simple to the extent that its solution can be computed by digital signal processors (DSP), when fed with actual physiological motor instructions by a freely behaving subject. This allows for the design of a new strategy for biomimetic prosthesis: real-time integration of simple models, controlled by few physiological signals. In this thesis we show the plausibility of this strategy by building a prototype of such a device. This research is focused in the study of mathematical systems which model the growth and optimal control of Aedes Aegypti mosquito population. This insect is responsible for the dengue disease virus transmission. The corresponding mathematical models are systems of nonlinear differential equations with and without time-delay in the state variables. In the study we apply stability analysis and sometimes also numerical methods are used. Maestría
