This paper seeks to offer an update of the syntactic representation of adverbials in the Lexical Constructional Model and the multipurpose lexico-conceptual knowledge base, FunGramKB, and to implement the conditions that are necessary for an effective parsing of such constituents within ARTEMIS, a NLP prototype within FunGramKB for the computational treatment of the syntax and semantics of sentences. As regards the status of adverbials in the Layered Structure of the Clause (LSC) proposed in Role and Reference Grammar, it is striking that they have been somewhat sidelined, despite the programmatic proposal in Van Valin (2005) for a distribution of adjuncts along the different layers in the LSC. Since then, almost no further contribution has been offered to fully expand this new scheme. Thus, our aim is to fully embody a layered approach for adverbials and to adapt our proposal to the conditions imposed by the Grammar Development Environment in ARTEMIS, by developing the rules that are necessary for the parsing of the catalogue of adverbials of a corpus written in the controlled natural language ASD-STE100.

"Adjuncts" es el término usado en los Estados Unidos para referirse a los profesores con contratos temporales, de baja remuneración y sin protección social. Hoy constituyen la mayoría de la plantilla del profesorado en universidades y colleges estadounidenses. Partiendo de mis tres años de experiencia como adjunta, este artículo es un relato de la precariedad en la academia norteamericana. Aunque se suele asumir que la precariedad afecta igual a todos los adjuncts, la raza, el género, y la clase dan forma a distribuciones diferenciadas de la precariedad y construyen ciertos cuerpos como precarios incluso aunque no sean adjuncts. Y es que la precariedad en la academia incluye una gama de experiencias a menudo inconmensurables. Las discusiones sobre la precariedad también suelen pasan por alto la complicidad de los profesores permanentes y de los administradores, que imponen la precariedad y reproducen jerarquías de la academia al mantener a los adjuncts lejos de los recursos de la Universidad y al pedirles que trabajen sin compensación. ¿Cómo practicar un rechazo colectivo de la reproducción de las jerarquías académicas sin que se entienda como muestra de que no nos preocupamos por nuestro trabajo? ¿Cómo ese rechazo puede servir para demandar mejores condiciones de trabajo para todos?

Este artigo apresenta uma diferente abordagem para as regras de projeção da estrutura semântica conceitual sobre a estrutura sintática. A abordagem é diferente no que diz respeito à utilização de somente quatro propriedades semânticas - desencadeador, afetado, estativo, controle - e suas combinações para a elaboração dessas regras de projeção, também conhecidas como Princípio da Hierarquia Temática. Além disso, as regras não são elaboradas com papéis temáticos, como o usual na literatura. Diferentemente de outras propostas, a localização de um argumento em determinada posição sintática se deve à propriedade que compõe o papel temático (e não pelo papel temático "per se"). Papéis temáticos são definidos como um grupo de propriedades atribuídas a um determinado argumento a partir dos acarretamentos estabelecidos por toda a proposição em que esse argumento encontra-se.This paper presents a different approach to projection rules between a syntactic structure and a conceptual semantic structure. The approach is different in the sense that, to propose those rules, also known as Thematic Hierarchy Principle, I deal only with four semantic properties - trigger, affected, state, and control - and their combinations. Besides, the projection rules are not constructed by thematic roles as is usual in the current literature. Differing from other proposals, the localization of an argument in a specific syntactic position is due to the property that composes the thematic role (and not to the thematic role per se). Thematic roles here are defined as a set of semantic properties, assigned to a certain argument, derived from the entailments established for the whole proposition where this argument is located.

This article proposes a multifactor analysis of the Spanish subjunctive adjuncts. By examining the features that govern Spanish mood and their interaction, I present a complete overview of diverse accounts on the Spanish subjunctive. I outline the general principles of those explanations and comment on their advantages and disadvantages in formalizing an explanation concerning the interaction of mood with syntax, semantics, and pragmatics. Next, from mood contribution to the flow in discourse, based on Quer’s (1998, 2001) approach, I provide a role for the subjunctive mood in the discourse, which can be established by a variety of factors. Instead of assigning rigid meanings to the subjunctive, this approach allows the speaker to relate the proposition to the actual world and provide an evaluation of it. In addition to this, I present a proposal to explain mood alternation in adjuncts considering the interaction of different components of the grammar in the process of interpretation. This contribution offers a dynamic view of meaning in which context and individuals are crucial for the interpretation of the Spanish subjunctive.

Reflete-se neste texto sobre a expressão "pela primeira vez" e as ambigüidades que sua ocorrência gera em sentenças como "Ana e Juliana tocaram juntas pela primeira vez em Campinas no concerto de Natal de 1955". Atribui-se à expressão o papel de discutir prioridade cronológica a um evento entre outros de um mesmo tipo, e especula-se sobre as condições em que os diferentes adjuntos podem ser tomados como um dos elementos que definem o tipo de evento em questão. A reflexão que constitui o artigo é um pequeno fragmento de uma gramática de eventos, que por sua vez é parte da aspectologia, área de investigação que o Professor Ataliba T. de Castilho trilhou... pela primeira vez no Brasil há cerca de três décadas.In this paper I concern myself with the Portuguese expression "pela primeira vez"(= Engl. "for the first time") and with the ambiguities that its occurrence entails in sentences as "Ana e Juliana tocaram juntas pela primeira vez em Campinas no concerto de Natal de 1955" (=Ana and Juliana performed together for the first time in Campinas during the 1955 Christmas Concerto") Claming that "pela primeira vez" assigns precedence in time to a particular event among others of the same type, I speculate on the conditions in which different PPs belonging to the same sentence are taken as defining the relevant type of events. The reflections in this paper are intended to be a tiny fragment of the semantics of events, which is itself a part of aspectology.- an area of linguistic research that Professor De Castilho investigated...for the first time in Brazil three decades ago.
