[EN] California has been identified as one of the areas of the United States that concentrates the highest levels of women trafficked into prostitution. This is due to the presence of the entertainment industry and the high number of undocumented migrants. This research, supported by interviews with ten traffickers who led women from Mexico and Central America to California and thirty migrant women who were driven by traffickers to California, concludes that networks that transport women for the sex trade to California operate on a regular basis, frequently transport minors, and charge relatively high fees., [ES] California ha sido señalada como una de las áreas de Estados Unidos que concentra los niveles más elevados de mujeres traficadas para la prostitución. Se muestra y analiza el modo como determinados autores, defensores de la ideología abolicionista sobre la prostitución, producen, reproducen y utilizan estimaciones sobre el número de víctimas de trata con fines de explotación sexual. Dichos autores establecen sus estimaciones a partir de una absoluta carencia de datos científicamente verificados y de la alteración de las fuentes que copian. De ese modo, actúan de manera irresponsable, adolecen de falta de honradez intelectual, cometen una falta profesional y desencamina las políticas y acciones contra la trata, las cuales terminan teniendo consecuencias negativas para las personas que ejercen la prostitución. Además, esos autores, que pasan por expertos sin en realidad serlo, recurren a la censura para evitar el debate, la crítica y tener que responder de sus afirmaciones: temen que su impostura y la estafa intelectual que cometen se pongan de manifiesto. Para desenmascarar a esos pseudoexpertos y revelar sus falsedades y vilezas, urge desarrollar un programa de investigación en el que sus discursos y actuaciones se tomen como objetos de estudio., It shows and analyzes how certain authors, defenders of the abolitionist ideology of prostitution, produce, reproduce and use estimates of the number of victims of trafficking for the purposes of sexual exploitation. These authors establish their estimates based on an absolute lack of scientifically verified data and the alteration of the sources they copy. In this way, they act irresponsibly, suffer from intellectual dishonesty, commit professional misconduct and mislead anti-trafficking policies and actions, which end up having negative consequences for people who practice prostitution. In addition, those authors, who pass as experts without actually being one, resort to censorship to avoid debate, criticism and having to answer for their claims: they fear that their imposture and the intellectual swindle they commit on will be revealed. La región de América del Norte, constituida por Centroamérica, México y Estados Unidos, constituye un área donde el tráfico sexual se ha enraizado profundamente. Este artículo, fundamentado en una metodología cualitativa que incluyó la realización de entrevistas en profundidad a 155 mujeres centroamericanas, tiene como objetivo examinar la naturaleza de la trata sufrida por las mujeres migrantes en los diferentes países de la región. Se concluye que en Estados Unidos las víctimas son principalmente mujeres conducidas por redes de tráfico sexual a través del engaño, con promesas de trabajos glamurosos o bien remunerados; en México predominan las víctimas secuestradas por los grupos delictivos, y en Centroamérica las víctimas son, sobre todo, menores prostituidas por personas cercanas o engañadas por proxenetas. The region we denominate North America, consisting of Central America, Mexico and the United States, is one where sex trafficking has been deeply rooted. This article, based on a qualitative methodology which included in-depth interviews with 155 women from Central America, offers a comparative analysis of the characteristics of the sex trafficking suffered by migrant women in the different countries of the region. It concludes that in the case of those who travel to the United States, the victims are mainly young women who are lured by sex trafficking networks with false promises of glamorous or well-paid jobs; in Mexico many victims are kidnapped by criminal groups, and in Central America, the victims are mostly minors prostituted by people who are close to them or who are deceived by pimps. A região da América do Norte, formada pela América Central, pelo México e pelos Estados Unidos, constitui uma área onde o tráfico sexual fincou profundamente suas raízes. Este artigo, fundamentado numa metodologia qualitativa que incluiu a realização de entrevistas em profundidade a 155 mulheres centro-americanas, tem como objetivo examinar a natureza do trata sofrido pelas mulheres migrantes em diferentes países da região. Conclui-se que, nos Estados Unidos, as vítimas são, principalmente, mulheres conduzidas por redes de tráfico sexual por meio do engano, com promessas de trabalhos glamorosos ou bem remunerados. No México, predominam as vítimas sequestradas pelos grupos criminais e, na América Central, as vítimas são, sobretudo, menores prostitutas enganadas por pessoas próximas ou por cafetões.

Using a qualitative methodology that includes interviews with 15 women from Mexico and Central America, the main aim of this article is to compare the situation of migrant women who have been prostituted in Nevada in closed venues through agencies and those who did so without intermediaries. The authors conclude that the women who were transported by sex trafficking networks cannot leave the bosses, to whom they have become indebted. Paradoxically, those who entered into prostitution autonomously felt empowered by their work, since it allowed them to dedicate more time to caring for their bodies, and they earned more than at other activities. Also, although the former entered into the sex trade as minors, the latter did so when they were older. Este artículo, fundamentado en una metodología cualitativa que incluye entrevistas a quince mujeres de México y Centroamérica, tiene como objetivo examinar comparativamente la situación de las mujeres migrantes prostituidas en Nevada en sitios cerrados, a través de agencias, y sin intermediarios. Se concluye que las mujeres que fueron transportadas por redes de tráfico sexual no pueden abandonar a los patrones con quienes contrajeron una deuda. Paradójicamente, aquellas que se prostituían de modo autónomo se sentían empoderadas con el trabajo de prostitución, ya que esta actividad les permitía dedicar más tiempo al cuidado de su cuerpo y ganaban más dinero que en otras actividades. Además, mientras las primeras son iniciadas en el comercio sexual siendo menores de edad, las últimas lo hacen a edades superiores.

Este artículo estudia, mediante un análisis sistemático, los elementos más significativos que definen la industria del sexo en el sureste asiático. Entre ellos destacamos en primer lugar, su compleja, organización, sofisticación, diversificación y estructuración; su relación con la feminización de la pobreza, las migraciones y las minorías étnicas. El tráfico sexual y el turismo sexual creciente. En segundo lugar hablaremos sobre su clientela, la estructura demográfica joven y el acceso al mercado de la prostitución a edades muy tempranas. Seguidamente haremos alusión a las desigualdades de género, las creencias socioculturales, religiosas y al imaginario social colectivo. A continuación incidiremos en las “prostituciones” (directas o indirectas), la idea de la elección y los límites en su producción estadística. Por último terminamos con una propuesta orientativa para enriquecer el debate y aportar vías facilitadoras para encarar el fenómeno desde la perspectiva de los derechos humanos. This paper studies the most significant elements that define the sex industry in Southeast Asia, using the systematic bibliographic revision. These include, first, its complex, organization, sophistication, diversification and structuring; Its relation with the feminization of poverty, migration and ethnic minorities, sex trafficking, and the growing sex tourism. Second, we will talk about its customers, the young demographic structure and the early access to the prostitution market. Then we shall refer to gender inequalities, cultural and religious beliefs, and the collective social imaginary. Next, we will discuss the concept of direct and indirect prostitution, the idea of choice and their limits on the statistics production. Finally we will look for some discussion to address the phenomenon from a human rights perspective.

In this article I explore the possibilities offered by a feminist anthropology in order to reflect on one of the main tensions in the contemporary feminist debate. Basing myself on a research about the relationships between feminisms and the debate about prostitution and sex trafficking in Brazil, I analyze those tensions considering how feminists positioned themselves regarding these issues in this country. I perform this analyzes taking into account the notions related with prostitution and sex trafficking in the recent history of Brazilian feminism, situating them in the context of the relationships this movement established with the State and considering the configurations of both in a transnational approach. En este texto exploro las posibilidades da la antropología feminista para reflexionar sobre uno de los principales puntos de tensión en el debate feminista contemporáneo. Basándome en una investigación sobre la relación entre feminismos y la discusión sobre prostitución y trata de personas en Brasil, analizo esas tensiones considerando las posiciones asumidas por el movimiento feminista y el lugar que él ha ocupado en las discusiones y acciones destinadas a esa problemática en ese país. Realizo ese análisis teniendo en cuenta las nociones relacionadas con la prostitución y con la trata en la historia reciente del feminismo brasileño, situándolas en el ámbito de las relaciones entre el Estado y el movimiento feminista y considerando las configuraciones de ambos en una lectura transnacional. Neste texto exploro as possibilidades da antropologia feminista para refletir sobre um dos principais pontos de tensão no debate feminista contemporâneo. Baseando-me numa pesquisa sobre a relação entre feminismos e a discussão sobre a prostituição e o tráfico internacional de pessoas no Brasil, analiso essas tensões considerando as posições assumidas pelo feminismo e o lugar que ele tem ocupado nas discussões e ações voltadas para essas problemáticas nesse país. The aim of this article is to contrast prominent discourses on prostitution and human trafficking to the context of prostitution in Brazil and local feminist discourses on this matter, understanding their contradictions and limitations. I look at Brazilian transgender prostitutes’ experiences to address an agency-related question that underlies feminist theorizations of prostitution: can prostitution be freely chosen? Is it necessarily exploitative? My argument is that discourses on sex work, departing from sex trafficking debates, are heavily engaged in a heteronormative logic that might be unable to approach the complexity and ambiguity of experiences of transgender prostitutes and, therefore, cannot theorize their possibilities of agency. To do so, I will conduct a critique of the naturalization of gender norms that hinders an understanding of experiences that exceed the binary ‘prostitute versus victim.’ I argue how both an abolitionist as well as a legalising solution to the issues involved in the sex market, when relying on the state as the guarantor of rights to sex workers, cannot account for the complexities of a context such as the Brazilian one, in which specific conceptions of citizenship permit violence against sexually and racially marked groups to occur on such a large scale.
