Stuttering is a multidimensional neurodevelopmental disorder that comprises primary and secondary behaviors but also feelings and attitudes. These ones have a huge importance in the overall characterization and impact of stuttering. This research aims to: 1) guarantee the adaptation and content validation of the assessment instrument A-19 to European Portuguese, and 2) analyze A-19 construct validity through a pilot study. Across-sectional , quantitative and qualitative study was developed to ensure the adaptation and content validation of A-19. The achievement of semantic, conceptual, experiential and idiomatic equivalences was only possible after the experts’ debate of several items concerning meaning, concept and cultural experience.The final Portuguese version of A-19 was used in a pilot study in which 42 children participated (21 children who stutter and 21 children who do not stutter). The group of school-age children who stutter presented a higher A-19 mean (6.29) in comparison with children who do not stutter (5.48), although the difference was not statistically significant. The Portuguese Version of A19 identifies the differences in feelings and attitudes between school age children who do and who do not stutter. The fact that this sample of children who stutter is already attending speech and language therapy sessions in which emotional, behavioural and cognitive reactions are explored, may have contributed to a non-significative difference in A-19 scores. The content and construct validity of A-19 European Portuguese Version is assured, as so this is a valid instrument to assess feelings and attitudes of school age children who stutter.

The Drosophila peruensis species group was recently proposed and includes four taxa: D. atalaia Vilela & Sene, 1982, D. boraceia Vilela & Val, 2004, D. pauliceia Ratcov & Vilela, 2007, and D. peruensis Wheeler, 1959. All these species have most of setae or setulae of mesonotum arinsing from dark spots, wings with crossveins darker (except in D. atalaia) and hypandrium squared-shaped mostly fused to gonopods. Here, we describe two new species, Drosophila itacorubi sp. nov. and Drosophila paraitacorubi sp. nov., belonging to this species group. The male genitalia of these species are figured. An identification key to the D. peruensis species group is provided.

Brazilian fauna of drosophilids has been researched in various ecosystems, but those in mangrove forests remain overlooked in Brazil and elsewhere. The present study attempts to characterise the assemblages of drosophilids of this environment, based on 28 collections taken in three mangrove areas in Santa Catarina Island, southern Brazil. The three mangroves surveyed were different in their surroundings, which varied from highly urbanised areas to conservation areas with natural vegetation. Overall, 69 species were collected, and no remarkable difference was detected in species composition and abundances or in the richness, evenness and heterogeneity between sites. The species abundance distribution observed fitted to a theoretical lognormal distribution in the three mangroves. The species richness scored and the performance of the species richness estimators showed an unexpectedly high diversity, considering the very low floristic diversity and the harsh conditions of the environment. Regarding species composition and abundances, the drosophilid mangrove assemblages were shown to be more similar to those found in open environments, with a marked dominance of exotic species. Finally, considering the apparent lack of feeding and breeding sites, we suggest that mangrove forests are acting as sink habitats for the drosophilids populations.A fauna brasileira de drosofilídeos tem sido estudada em vários ecossistemas, mas os manguezais têm sido negligenciados a esse respeito no Brasil e em todo o mundo. O presente estudo traz uma caracterização das assembléias de drosofilídeos neste ambiente, baseando-se em 28 coletas realizadas em três áreas de manguezais na ilha de Santa Catarina, sul do Brasil. Os três manguezais estudados apresentam diferenças marcantes quanto aos ambientes que os cercam, desde regiões altamente urbanizadas até áreas de proteção ambiental com vegetação natural. Ao todo, 69 espécies foram coletadas, e nenhuma diferença marcante foi detectada na composição e abundância das espécies, bem como na riqueza, equitabilidade e heterogeneidade entre os locais. A distribuição de abundância de espécies encontrada ajustou-se a uma distribuição teórica lognormal nos três manguezais. A riqueza de espécies observada e o desempenho de estimadores de riqueza de espécies mostraram uma inesperada alta diversidade, considerando a baixa diversidade florística e as condições hostis do ambiente. A respeito da composição e abundância de espécies, as assembléias de drosofilídeos dos manguezais mostraram-se mais similares àquelas encontradas em ambientes relativamente mais abertos, com grande dominância de espécies exóticas. Finalmente, considerando-se a aparente escassez de sítios de alimentação e oviposição do ambiente, sugere-se que os manguezais estejam agindo como "sink habitats" para as populações de drosofilídeos.

This study investigates the Drosophilidae species associated to fruiting bodies of fungi in forested and anthropized environments of the Atlantic Rain Forest Biome, in south and southeastern Brazil. We collected samples of imagoes flying over and emerging from fruiting bodies of species of five fungi families, in six collection sites. We obtained 18 samples, from which emerged 910 drosophilids of 31 species from the genera Drosophila Fallen, 1823, Hirtodrosophila Duda, 1923, Leucophenga Mik, 1886, Mycodrosophila Oldenberg, 1914, Scaptomyza Hardy, 1849, Zaprionus Coquillett, 1901 and Zygothrica Wiedemann, 1830. The Drosophila species collected on fungi, as well as Zaprionus indianus Gupta, 1970, had previously been recorded colonizing fruits, demonstrating their versatility in resource use. Most of these species belong to the immigrans-tripunctata radiation of Drosophila. Our records expands the mycophagous habit (feeding or breeding on fungi) to almost all species groups of this radiation in the Neotropical region, even those supposed to be exclusively frugivorous. Assemblages associated to fungi of forested areas were more heterogeneous in terms of species composition, while those associated to fungi of anthropized areas were more homogeneous. The drosophilids from anthropized areas were also more versatile in resource use.Foi realizado um estudo das espécies de Drosophilidae associadas aos corpos de frutificação de fungos em ambientes florestais e antrópicos no Bioma Mata Atlântica, no sul e sudeste do Brasil. Foram realizadas coletas de adultos sobrevoando e emergindo de corpos de frutificação de espécies de fungos de cinco famílias, em seis pontos de coleta. Foram obtidas 18 amostras, onde foram coletados 910 indivíduos de 31 espécies, pertencentes aos gêneros Drosophila Fallen, 1823, Hirtodrosophila Duda, 1923, Leucophenga Mik, 1886, Mycodrosophila Oldenberg, 1914, Scaptomyza Hardy, 1849, Zaprionus Coquillett, 1901 e Zygothrica Wiedemann, 1830. As espécies de Drosophila coletadas, assim como Zaprionus indianus Gupta, 1970, já haviam sido registradas em frutos, evidenciando sua versatilidade na utilização dos recursos. A maioria destas espécies pertence à radiação immigrans-tripunctata de Drosophila. Em espécies desta radiação que habitam regiões temperadas, a micofagia é amplamente difundida; nossos registros (de sítios de alimentação e oviposição em fungos) expandem este hábito para quase todos os grupos de espécies desta radiação na região Neotropical, mesmo aquelas que se supunham ser exclusivamente frugívoras. As assembléias colonizadoras dos corpos de frutificação variaram entre as espécies de fungos e com o tipo de ambiente em que eles se desenvolviam, onde as espécies de drosofilídeos generalistas utilizam os fungos em ambientes mais degradados.

Drosophila paulistorum Dobzhansky & Pavan, 1949 had initially been considered absent in anthropogenically disturbed environments, but in 1985 the detection of the species in Porto Alegre city, southern Brazil, suggested its potential to colonize new habitats and laid the foundations for ecologic studies on this species' populations. This study followed the variations in D. paulistorum populations in this town almost 20 years after its first local record. Drosophilid specimens were collected in sites with different urbanization grades and the results point to the expressive decline in D. paulistorum populations in Porto Alegre. This decline may be linked to urban growth and to naturally driven population decline, as imputed to climatic changes like variations in maximum and minimum temperatures as a consequence of a global climate warming. Also, the recent introduction of exotic species Zaprionus indianus Gupta, 1970 seems to play a role in this scenario, changing the interactions between native species.Drosophila paulistorum Dobzhansky & Pavan, 1949 era considerada inicialmente ausente em ambientes com influência antrópica, mas a detecção dessa espécie na cidade de Porto Alegre, sul do Brasil, em 1985, sugeriu seu potencial de colonização de novos ambientes e levou a fundação de estudos ecológicos com populações desta espécie. Este estudo acompanhou as variações populacionais de D. paulistorum nesta cidade quase 20 anos depois de seu primeiro registro neste local. Coletas de Drosophilidae foram realizadas em pontos com diferentes graus de urbanização e os resultados apontaram para uma expressiva diminuição dos tamanhos populacionais de D. paulistorum em Porto Alegre. Este declínio pode estar relacionado com o crescimento da cidade, assim como com retrações naturais no tamanho das populações devido a mudanças climáticas, tais como, variações nas temperaturas mínimas e máximas como conseqüência do aquecimento global. A introdução recente de Zaprionus indianus Gupta, 1970 também parece contribuir com esse quadro, uma vez que poderia estar modificando as interações entre as espécies nativas.

Drosophila willistoni (Sturtevant, 1916) is a species of the willistoni group of Drosophila having wide distribution from the South of USA (Florida) and Mexico to the North of Argentina. It has been subject of many evolutionary studies within the group, due to its considerable ability to successfully occupy a wide range of environments and also because of its great genetic variability expressed by different markers. The D. willistoni 17A2 strain was collected in 1991 in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil (30°05'S, 51°39'W), and has been maintained since then at the Drosophila laboratory of UFRGS. Different to the other D. willistoni strains maintained in the laboratory, the 17A2 strain spontaneously produced mutant males white-like (white eyes) and sepia-like (brown eyes) in stocks held at 17°C. In order to discover if this strain is potentially hypermutable, we submitted it to temperature stress tests. Eighteen isofemale strains were used in our tests and, after the first generation, all the individuals produced in each strain were maintained at 29°C. Different phenotype alterations were observed in subsequent generations, similar to mutations already well characterized in D. melanogaster (white, sepia, blistered and curly). In addition, an uncommon phenotype alteration with an apparent fusion of the antennae was observed, but only in the isofemale line nº 31. This last alteration has not been previously described as a mutation in the D. melanogaster species. Our results indicate that the D. willistoni 17A2 strain is a candidate for hypermutability, which presents considerable cryptic genetic variability. Different factors may be operating for the formation of this effect, such as the mobilization of transposable elements, effect of inbreeding and alteration of the heat-shock proteins functions.Drosophila willistoni (Sturtevant, 1916) é uma espécie do grupo willistoni de Drosophila que apresenta ampla distribuição geográfica desde o sul dos Estados Unidos (Flórida) e México até o norte da Argentina. Esta espécie tem sido alvo de muitos estudos evolutivos dentro do grupo devido à sua considerável capacidade de explorar de forma bem sucedida diversos tipos de ambientes e também por sua grande variabilidade genética expressa através de diferentes marcadores. A linhagem 17A2 de D. willistoni foi coletada em 1991 no Estado do Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil (30°05'S, 51°39'W), e vem sendo mantida desde então no laboratório de Drosophila da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul. Diferentemente das demais linhagens de D. willistoni mantidas no laboratório, a linhagem 17A2 já produziu espontaneamente machos do tipo white (olhos brancos) e do tipo sepia (olhos marrons) em estoques mantidos a 17ºC. A fim de avaliar se esta linhagem é potencialmente hipermutável, nós submetemo-la a experimentos de estresse por temperatura. Dezoito isolinhagens foram utilizadas e, após a primeira geração, todos os indivíduos de cada isolinhagem foram mantidos a 29°C. Diferentes alterações foram observadas nas gerações seguintes, similares com mutações já bem caracterizadas em D. melanogaster (white, sépia, blistered e curly). Além destas, uma alteração com aparente fusão nas antenas foi encontrada, mas somente em indivíduos da isolinhagem nº 31. Esta última alteração não foi previamente descrita como uma mutação na espécie D. melanogaster. Nossos resultados indicam que a linhagem 17A2 de D. willistoni é uma candidata a hipermutabilidade, além de apresentar uma variabilidade genética importante. Diferentes fatores podem estar atuando para a formação deste panorama observado, tais como mobilização de elementos transponíveis, seleção por endocruzamento e alteração na função de proteínas de choque térmico (heat-shock proteins).

Using conventional staining with acetic orcein and C-banding techniques it was investigated constitutive heterochromatin chromosomal polymorphisms and the mitotic and the meiotic behavior of male and female chromosomes of Boophilus microplus (Canestrini, 1887). Some differences were detected in the population of southern Brazil as compared to the data of other authors for populations in other latitudes. The differences being mainly concerned with the distribution of constitutive centromeric heterochromatin and variation in the length of heterochromatic blocks in the pericentromeric regions of some chromosome pairs.

Os autores registraram a ocorrência de mais um caso autóctone de doença de Chagas no Estado do Pará, desta feita na localidade de São Francisco do Pará, distante 95 km da capital. Esse caso constitui o 11° registro no Estado e o 29° da bacia amazônica. O paciente, um menino de 7 anos de idade, teve diagnóstico sorológico e paraitológico positivos para T. cruzi. O perfil enzimático da amostra isolada foi caracterizado por eletroforese de enzimas como zimodema 3.

Three-dimensional (3D) printing includes a group of technologies by means of which it is possible to generate three-dimensional objects from binary information. Orthopedics and traumatology are fields of medicine in which 3D planning has had the greatest impact, especially in trauma and oncological orthopedics. Applications of this technique include diagnosis, surgical planning, intraoperative guide creation, custom implants, surgical training, orthotic and prosthetic impression, and bioprinting. Advantages have been demonstrated in its use, such as greater technical precision, shorter surgical times, decreased blood loss and less exposure to X-rays. Although the process is increasingly optimized and accessible due to advances in software and automation, it is a technique that requires adequate training. The objective of this review is to offer an approach to this technology and its basic principles.
