Abstract The study examined the efficacy of freeze-dried papain enzyme obtained from three Vasconcellea species (V. pubescens, V. chachapoyensis, V. heilbornii) as a natural coagulant in cheese making. Notably, the enzyme V. pubescens demonstrated the most promising results when concentrations of 2 g/L, 4 g/L, and 6 g/L were used to produce fresh cheese, while other enzyme species exhibited lower efficacy. The optimal yield of fresh cheese with minimal residual enzyme was achieved when a 2 g/L dose of papain enzyme was employed at a coagulation temperature of 30 °C, resulting in physicochemical and organoleptic characteristics comparable to those produced with commercial Hansen’s rennet. Nevertheless, an increase in the coagulation temperature (42 °C) and a higher dose of papain enzyme (4 g/L) resulted in a reduction in the yield of fresh cheese and; consequently, the residual enzyme increased. Further studies are required to determine the purity of freeze-dried papain and the most effective dosage to increase profitability for producers and consumers. Such findings could facilitate the ecological application of this alternative in producing of fresh cheese.

Although the use of computers and sophisticated software, particularly R, has become common in demography, this has not led to a revision of some traditional demographic algorithms, which were originally designed to overcome computational obstacles that nowadays no longer exist. This article argues that, rather than implementing the existing algorithms in today’s powerful software, it is time to take advantage of this software to modify the algorithms themselves. It illustrates this idea with three examples: Sprague interpolation, the Relational Gompertz method for fertility estimation, and the estimation of infant and child mortality from proportions of surviving children by mother’s age. In each case, it is shown that the analysis can be made simpler, more direct, intuitive, transparent, and precise by making use of the resources offered by software such as R. It is also shown that the greater flexibility of these algorithms creates opportunities for extending each method.

ABSTRACT Spray drift leads to wastage of spraying material and poses a threat to non-targeted crops and the environment. Therefore, the spray drift characteristics of a Ronnie Baugh (RB) tractor-trailed boom sprayer were determined through computational fluid dynamics to assist in designing the tractor for boom spraying with minimized spray drift. The wake region of the RB tractor was characterized by investigating its velocity profile, turbulent kinetic energy, and drag coefficient at different forward speeds. Additionally, spray droplet sizes and drift distances from the boom sprayer were measured at forward speeds of 4, 6, and 8 km/h, along with different wind directions. The RB tractor exhibits an estimated drag coefficient of 0.7. The results further demonstrate that, at varying forward speeds, the wake experiences low turbulent kinetic energy and minimal velocity profile variations. No spray drift was observed at tractor speeds below 4 km/h, whereas a drift of 0.19 m and 0.33 m is predicted at 6 km/h and 8 km/h, respectively. The tractor's wake is significantly influenced by changes in wind direction, resulting in varying drift distances from each nozzle due to exposure to both free and obstructed airflow. To minimize drift at higher travel speeds, it is recommended that the tractor be operated in line with the prevailing wind direction.

This paper describes and discusses creating and evaluating a virtual reality simulation of Avebury Stone Circle and Henge complex as it might have appeared and sounded circa 2300 BCE. Avebury is a Neolithic heritage site in the UK which is part of the Stonehenge, Avebury and associated sites UNESCO World Heritage Site. The overall aim of the project was to better understand the sense of place and presence that visitors can experience in virtual simulations of heritage sites. We investigated how virtual spaces might become experienced as places by visitors through their exploration, active participation, sensory stimulation and communication with other visitors in the simulation. More than 1200 members of the public experienced the simulation, both at Avebury itself and at three public exhibitions. The specific objectives of the project were to explore if and how the believability of a simulation was associated with feeling a sense of place in the virtual landscape, and if some personal characteristics, viz. age, disability, sex, immersive tendency, familiarity with IT and frequency of playing computer games, were associated with levels of enjoyment in, and learning from, the simulation. We analysed the data from a detailed questionnaire completed by 388 of the 702 visitors to Avebury from June to September 2018 who experienced the simulation, supported by observational data from all participants at all events. We found that believability was associated with a sense of place in the simulation, i.e. that the more believable the simulation appeared, the greater the sense of place experienced by the participants. We also found that personal characteristics had very little influence upon visitor reactions to the simulation, suggesting that such simulations might have wide appeal for heritage and museum visitors, regardless of age, gender or familiarity with technology. Highlights • More than 1200 members of the public experienced a 3D, fully immersive simulation of Avebury Henge, Wiltshire, UK over a nine-month period. • We found patterns of use and familiarity with information technology (IT), and using mobile technologies for gaming, that did not follow age and gender stereotypes. • We found little correlation between age, gender and IT familiarity with reactions to Virtual Avebury, suggesting that such simulations might have wide appeal for heritage site visitors.

Several studies have found in the theory of justice as fairness of Rawls one of the references for the discussion of inequalities between different social groups. Two principles guide this theory: the principle of equal freedom and the second principle, which is divided into two: equality of opportunities and the difference principle. Both principles support Rawls's theory as a normative conception that guides the basic structure of a modern constitutional democracy in which political, social, and economic institutions combine to create a system of social co-operation. In light of the epistemological matrix underlying this theory, the present study proposes to analyze the formulation and implementation of Law n. 2.711/2012 (BRASIL, 2012) at the Federal Institute of Rio de Janeiro. The question guiding the study is: is the policy formulation and implementation consistent with a public and liberal political culture as defined by Rawls? To answer this question, the study discusses the epistemological basis of the theory to assess whether the formulation and implementation of policy is, at least normatively, consistent with the theory of justice as fairness.

Abstract This study aimed to chemically characterize the essential oils (EOs) of Cinnamomum zeylanicum (cinnamon) and Eremanthus erythropappus (candeia) and evaluate their acaricidal activity, together with that of their major compounds and cinnamyl acetate derivative, against Rhipicephalus microplus. Essential oil compounds were identified through gas chromatography. The larval packet test (LPT) at concentrations ranging from 0.31 to 10.0 mg/mL and the adult immersion test (AIT) at concentrations between 2.5 and 60.0 mg/mL were performed. (E)-cinnamaldehyde and α-bisabolol were the major compounds in cinnamon (86.93%) and candeia (78.41%) EOs, respectively. In the LPT, the EOs of cinnamon and candeia and the compounds (E)-cinnamaldehyde, α-bisabolol and cinnamyl acetate resulted in 100% mortality at concentrations of 2.5, 2.5, 5.0, 10.0 and 10.0 mg/mL respectively. In the AIT, percentage control values > 95% were observed for cinnamon and candeia EOs, (E)-cinnamaldehyde and α-bisabolol at the concentrations of 5.0, 60.0, 20.0, and 20.0 mg/mL, respectively, whereas cinnamyl acetate showed low activity. We conclude that EOs and their compounds showed high acaricidal activity, whereas the acetylated derivative of (E)-cinnamaldehyde presented less acaricidal activity on R. microplus engorged females.

This study develops models capable of finding empirical relations between social factors in practitioners’ private lives, that is to say, extra-organizational or external factors to the work environment that affect the career promotion of female professionals in public relations. The aim is to analyse some gender issues at a global level by exploring the Latin American subcontinent, where there is an accepted lack of knowledge. With that purpose, the focus is on the public relations practitioners’ care responsibilities (such as living with children or dependents) and if these responsibilities influence their opportunities for career development in Latin American countries. Quantitative data from 803 Latin American practitioners representing 18 countries were analysed through predictive multivariable analysis with data mining techniques, using hierarchical decision trees. The applied statistical method is valid to explain some of the extra-organizational factors that affect female career promotion in public relations and can be used for other studies. Results empirically found that family dependency and caring responsibilities affect the career opportunities of women, and that family responsibilities do not affect men’s chances to career promotion. Therefore, the predictive analysis statistically proves that gender can be a determinant factor for career promotion in these circumstances.

Florida is considered by some to be the lightning capital of the world. Florida has on average 3,500 cloud-to-ground lightning strikes per day and 1.2 million strikes per year. Given so many strikes, the probability of damage to certain palms is significant. Coconut palms, royal palms, and Washington palms are particularly vulnerable due to their great heights, but other tall palms may be equally susceptible. This new 6-page publication of the UF/IFAS Environmental Horticulture Department describes and includes many helpful photos of symptoms of lightning damage as well as lightning protection systems. Written by Stephen H. Brown, Douglas Caldwell, and Ralph Mitchell. Abstract Avian malaria is one of the most important diseases of captive penguins. We employed morphometric techniques to evaluate hepatic hemosiderosis in rehabilitating wild Magellanic penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus) that were negative (n = 9) or naturally infected by different subgenera of Plasmodium spp. (n = 24), according with: Plasmodium subgenera (Haemamoeba, Huffia, Other lineages, and Unidentified lineages), severity of Plasmodium histopathological lesions, and concurrent diseases, age class (juvenile or adult plumage), sex (male, female or not determined), body score (emaciated, thin, good, excellent, not available), molt, presence or absence of oil contamination upon admission, iron supplementation, and rehabilitation center. The percentage of the area occupied by hemosiderin was called ‘Index of Hepatic Hemosiderosis (IHH)’. Plasmodium-positive females presented significantly higher IHH values (17.53 ± 12.95%) than males (7.20 ± 4.25%; p = 0.041). We observed higher levels of congestion (p = 0.0182) and pneumonia (p = 0.0250) severity between Unidentified lineages vs. Huffia. We believe that the hepatic hemosiderosis observed in this study was multifactorial, the result of pathological processes caused by malaria, molting, hemoglobin and myoglobin catabolism during migration, anemia, concomitant diseases, and iron supplementation, all possibly potentiated by decreased liver mass. Further studies are needed to clarify the mechanisms of these hypotheses.

This paper, which has the Food and Nutrition Education (FNE) theme in the school premises, is linked to the "Educational Processes and their Fundamentals" research line, from the Uberaba University Postgraduate Program in Education. This research starts with the following question: how is it worked and what spaces does FNE occupy in the daily life of a City School considered as model of the city of Uberaba, MG? Its general objective is to understand the limits and possibilities of FNE in elementary education. Participants in the survey were children, teachers, school staff and family members of the school community. It was found that the school's contribution to FNE is reduced to the supply of healthy snacks and that for some adults, children's interest in artificial and industrialized food is an innate feature. It is concluded that even the FNE not being worked on in the school, there are spaces where this can be given - and those are not limited to the classroom alone.

Abstract The larvae of the family Trombiculidae are ectoparasites of vertebrates, including birds. The bite of some species can cause deep lesions and severe skin reactions in the host, these can lead to dermatitis, popularly known as trombiculiasis. A morphological study of chiggers collected on birds from the state of Minas Gerais in Southeastern Brazil discovered Blankaartia sinnamaryi-infestation on Passeriformes birds. Molecular studies of the disclosed the 18S rDNA sequences of the mite, and the detection of a Rickettsia sp. in this chigger mite species.

The objective of this study is to determine whether human and social capital are drivers of entrepreneurship. The methodology involves the estimation of descriptive and inferential statistical techniques such as logistic regressions and correlations of variables. It is focused on information from the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor database for 2012 from Germany and Costa Rica. The results demonstrate that human and social capital, factors related to knowledge, have a positive statistical relationship with the propensity to become an entrepreneur. Little difference exists among knowledge-related factors across countries. They are mainly related to the cultural contexts, which affect the propensity to become an entrepreneur

The past two decades presents a rapid development of country image research. From the literature, several conceptual frameworks are aligned to specific topics, for instance, country-of-origin, country brand models, socioeconomic changes, among others. Specifically, focusing on Brazil’s image research, this paper provides a systematic review of international articles published between 2001 and 2015. Therefore, this paper concludes that there is not enough research about Brazil’s image, providing an exciting opportunity to advance our knowledge about this complex Latin America country relating to other disciplines. Additionally, most studies have examined Brazil’s image from a ‘tourism’ perspective, followed by ‘exports’ mostly using quantitative methods. This demonstrates that researchers could carry out further research regarding potential theoretical and methodological approaches aligned to other disciplines. Furthermore, the outcomes can orientate new research alignments linked to Brazil’s image and the recent crises (e.g., economic, political, social and ethical).

This paper originates from the results of the EU financed project, ECOPSI, which advanced understanding about the professional competences of European public relations and communication managers. The paper focuses on deficiencies in competences that practitioners identify for themselves and on the needs for the future generation that will perform four professional roles: chief communication officer (CCO), crisis communication, social media, and internal communication. Questions to understand the roles and their future requirements were defined around: means for achievement of current competences to perform the role, competence gaps, specialized competences, and future needs. They were explored with qualitative methodology through 53 in depth interviews. The analysis of data shows that European professionals understand and evaluate their way of performing the practice through a complex framework of competences. The findings provide evidence of synergies in the understanding and interpretation of the four roles and there is common identification of on-going gaps and future needs, suggesting that public relations is a maturing discipline with an accumulated set of standards in Europe. The study also targets the capacity of intervention for advancing the profession to an approach of knowledge acquisition and supporting the previous academic consensus about the necessity of a body of knowledge and specialized skills for professionalization

Social sciences (General) ,H1-99 - Abstract

29. Freedom and Formlessness: Ben Lerner’s 10:04 and the Affective Historical Present

History of scholarship and learning. The humanities ,AZ20-999 - Abstract
This essay argues, via Henri Bergson and Gilles Deleuze, that in distinction to a neoliberal notion of time that overlooks the present moment and past experience, Ben Lerner’s 10:04 posits the existence, in both its form and content, of a kind of freedom not imminent to or beyond the endless presentism and debt-mortgaged non-future of neoliberal time but one that is immanent to and within it. The novel does so by stressing the way in which the actual, lived present, if properly attended to, gives rise to a virtual future containing multiple potentialities that have yet to be realized. What emerges is a deep sense of contemporaneity or affective time that heralds the potential of a nascent collective. 10:04 performs this notion in its very metafictional form(lessness) that calls attention to the fragility of both narrative and time that, particularly during moments of disruption, allow the subject to experience affectively an actual present carrying a virtual past into a future teeming with potentialities that a neoliberal temporality, in which the future is tamed by a drop down menu of preselected options, must deny. Thus, 10:04 reveals that we can experience a freedom to come within even the presentism of neoliberal temporality so that freedom after neoliberalism, as the novel’s Benjaminian influenced refrain suggests, will be “the same but a little different.”

Social sciences (General) ,H1-99 - Abstract

In this article I argue for the role that approaches such as Socially Acute Questions (SAQs) can play in confronting the STEM discourse in the curriculum. For SAQs and similar approaches to be effective in enacting issues of social justice educators need to take account of local political contexts, the ethical and political assumptions which underpin values appertaining to social justice, such as concepts of communalism and libertarianism, and democratic practise in the school classroom where the students become co-enquirers in generating knowledge which aims to improve material realities. This is not a straightforward but one that demands reflection and critique throughout the process.

Abstract The article joins together different ways of analysing the phenomenon of the disappeared during the last military dictatorship in Argentina. It shows that the so called discourse of remembrance, in a paradigmatic turn, has overcome the claim for an absolute representation of the past. Instead, it includes constructivist positions which allow to integrate the local conditions and expressions into a global dimension and which lead to a critical analysis of the discourse of testimonies.

The aims of the paper and presented research are to monitor trends in communication management and to evaluate specific topics that include decision-making style, leadership style, role enactment and the power of communication departments in Europe. This paper is based on data from the European Communication Monitor (ECM) annual research, the most comprehensive analysis of communication management worldwide. The ECM is an annual research project conducted since 2007. The ECM 2011 collected quantitative data through an on-line survey from 2,209 participating professionals from 43 European countries, with representation of every European region. This paper presents original connections about previous theory and offers empirical evidences about vertical and horizontal power of communication departments into organizations. On despite of the limitations of a self-reported survey, these evidences open new directions or research on hierarchical and social dimensions of power. The aim of this paper is to deepen the understanding of the power of communication management in organizations. Concretely, the paper aims to develop knowledge and understanding about horizontal and vertical power and the relationships established between these dimensions of power and strategic roles, decision making and leadership styles that communicators play. The paper presents original ideas by critiquing and re-focussing the literature and theory of power and leadership in organizations. The paper also presents new empirical data to support these arguments.

ABSTRACT: In order to provide evidence of validity and reliability of the instruments to evaluate the quality of working life, this study assesses the factorial structure and the reliability of the UWES-17 scale, measuring Engagement or employment commitment. A group of 165 Chilean Health workers were surveyed from various health disciplines and contract quality, the majority being women (70.30%) and non-medical professionals (27.88%). Through a Factorial Exploratory Analysis, we identified two factors: involvement with work and enthusiasm for work, demonstrating sufficient reliability. The study shows that the UWES-17 scale, considering the factorial structure referred to above, presents appropriate psychometric properties to be used in Chilean health workers, which supports its use to investigate this laboral phenomenon.

Fides et ratio is an encyclical of great scope and depth and provides an occasion for discussing any number of important issues. What I shall do is at once more modest and, I think, not wholly devoid of philosophical interest, I intend to reflect on a remark to be found in paragraph 4 of Fides et ratio, namely, that there is an "implicit philosophy" held by all, that provides a reference-point for the rival philosophical systems. My remarks will allude to Common Sense Philosophy, with particular reference to Pere Buffier, and to Anti-foundationalism, for reasons which, if not already obvious, will emerge.

Contrary to what some readers believe, the author claims that The Point of View is a text as important and authoritative as every other work of Kierkegaard, and that it is of special interest to analyze the interpretative key that is there offered for the pseudonimous texts towards the Discourses of 1843. Here it is analyzed the sensuous, the aesthetic and the poetic as a possible mode of existence rejected by Christianity to then conclude in the Kierkegaardian claim that poetic life or aesthetic life is not only a life of despair, but an impossible one. The sensuous-erotic genius, represented by Don Juan, apears as a figure that can only be expressed in music, as Mozart did, and that this can not really exist. Here there are analyzed the greek positions on the sensuous against happyness both in Aristotle, with the érgon argument, and Plato, reading the Protagoras with is hierarchical vision of the powers and activities of the human being, in order to culminate with Kierkegaard's argument: aesthetic life is imposible because it is the effort to consciously live an unconscious life, it is to force the mind to be mindless.

In this study, one describes a new record of the bushmaster snake, Lachesis muta, in an Atlantic Forest fragment in the state of Paraíba, northeastern Brazil. This species is regarded as the largest venomous snake from the New World. The specimen was found at night, crossing a narrow shortcut, close to a slope, about 20m away from a waterfall. The occurrence of L. muta in this fragment demonstrates the importance of conservating Atlantic Forest fragments for preservating this species.

A categoria docente é exposta a ambientes conflituosos, alta exigência e estresse, repercutindo na saúde física, mental e no desempenho destes profissionais.

OBJECTIVE: To examine knowledge of and self-treatment with antibiotics among medically-insured adults in Mexico. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional, interviewer-administered survey among 101 adult patients seeking care for acute respiratory tract infections in a family medicine clinic in Mexico. Knowledge scores were calculated as a composite of correct, incorrect and don't know responses. Factors associated with antibiotic knowledge and antibiotic self-treatment were explored with bivariate analyses. RESULTS: 47% of participants were taking antibiotics prior to the visit, 20% were self-treating. Antibiotic knowledge was highly variable. Many participants believed common non-antibiotic treatments for colds and coughs were antibiotics, such as ambroxol (45%), Desenfriol (45%) and paracetamol (44%). Older participants (>40 years) had better knowledge scores. DISCUSSION: Self-treatment with and misperceptions about antibiotics are common among medically insured adults seeking medical attention in Mexico.OBJETIVO: Examinar el conocimiento y automedicación de antibióticos en adultos asegurados en México.
