2. More Than Listening is Needed for Synodality: Observations Based on the Australian Plenary Council and the Church in the New Testament

Abstract

This essay will examine how the Australian Plenary Council and the church revealed in the New Testament can help us come to a deeper understanding of the nature and practice of synodality. The first part will look at how the Plenary Council was envisaged as a response to the call for synodality, the preparations for the Council, the composition of its membership, and the foci of the Council’s deliberations, so as to make suggestions about how a Synod could be organised and conducted. This could be called an investigation into the “body” of synodality. The second part will examine the church in the New Testament from the perspective of being in both _koinonia_ and _homothumadon_, in the hope that such an investigation can help us develop a synodal process which, through both “listening” and “looking,” can come as close as possible to consensus. This could be called an investigation into the “soul” of synodality.

Abstract

Praying mantids are charismatic insects that are considered beneficial to humans because of their insectivorous lifestyle and because of their aesthetic appeal. Despite this, many praying mantid species remain understudied. One species that occurs in the southeastern United States is the grass-like mantid, Thesprotia graminis (Scudder) (Figure 1). This small, cryptic mantid species is light brown to green in color and can easily blend in with pine needles and grass, making it difficult to detect in its natural habitat. Although this mantid may be mistaken for a stick insect (Order: Phasmatodea), especially when its forelegs are held directly in front of the body and it resembles a blade of grass, the raptorial forelimbs reveal the insect’s true identity. There are 14 Neotropical species within the genus Thesprotia, all of which occur in South America except Thesprotia graminis (Rondon et al. 2007). The type specimen for this species is a male that was collected in Gainesville, Florida. It is vouchered in the entomology collection of the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Abstract

To assist in attracting investors into mohair production in Australia, a production and financial model was built as a learning and support tool. The work aimed to reduce search time and thinking costs about the impact of management strategies on financial feasibility. Various management strategies and assumptions applied to a case study with 300 breeding Angora does and eight variations. The results showed an internal rate of return for mohair ranging from 9.3% to 21.2% over 12 years, a median gross margin per effective hectare ranging from $82 to $167, cash at bank in year 12 ranging from $8,700 to $56,800 and net enterprise assets ranging from $69,900 to $155,700. A key benefit of the model was its ability to allow new farmers to explore potential management strategies and their assumptions about a future enterprise before investing.

Abstract

We aimed to identify impediments to investing into mohair and cashmere production and to suggest programs and strategies to attract investors. Targeted interviews of people focussed on attributes of an investment opportunity. Analysis differentiated views of small and large-scale producers and those not involved in these industries. Potential investors into mohair and cashmere make decisions based on the compatibility of the enterprise to their farm system, the technical, financial and market feasibility of the enterprise and its comparative advantage with other possible courses of action. They are sceptical of information coming from within these industries that is not sufficiently supported by fact. There are many implications from these findings including the need for the industries to: understand the investment decision process; provide objective financial and benchmarking data; make information more accessible; overcome resistance to these industries; and increase the visibility of the industries.

Abstract

Production and financial benchmarking was undertaken with commercially motivated mohair, cashmere and goat meat farmers in Australia. There were large differences in animal and fleece production and financial returns between the best and worst performing farms. Farmers and industry groups reported that the process and results were helpful and resulted in them changing management practices. Benchmarking demonstrated that there is substantial scope to increase productivity and profitability through improved genetic selection and improved management of pastures, breeding flocks and in kid survival and growth.

9. Corncrake Crex crex census estimates: a conservation application of vocal individuality

Abstract

Vocal individuality could be used to estimate numbers of individuals in species otherwise difficult to monitor. However, the usefulness of this technique in providing conservation information is little studied. The vocalisations of the Corncrake show a high level of individual distinctiveness. This fact was used to examine current counting methods and estimate movement patterns within one breeding season. Information on individual identity gained from vocalisations increased census estimates by 20–30% and showed that male Corncrakes called less frequently than previous studies had suggested. Males moved greater distances in areas with lower availability of suitable habitat. The conservation implications of these results are discussed.

Abstract

Objetivo: Este estudio se realizó para evaluar la eficacia de cursos semanales de corticoides comparado con un solo curso en mujeres con rotura prematura de membranas (RPM). Métodos: Se realizó un análisis secundario planificado en mujeres con RPM que participaron en un estudio multicéntrico randomizado de corticoides antenatales en dosis única vs semanales (2). Luego de la administración de la dosis estándar de corticoides entre las 24 y 32+6 semanas de edad gestacional, las mujeres que consintieron en entrar al estudio se asignaron al azar a recibir inyecciones semanales de betametasona vs placebo hasta las 34 semanas. Se comparó la morbilidad materna y neonatal entre los 2 grupos. Resultados: Se enrolaron un total de 161 mujeres con RPM, 81 mujeres se asignaron a recibir cursos semanales de corticoides y 80 recibieron una dosis única. No hubo diferencias significativas en la morbilidad neonatal compuesta entre los dos grupos (27 [34,2%] de 81 pacientes vs 33 [41,8%] de 80 pacientes, p=0,41). Hubo más casos de corioamnionitis en las pacientes que recibieron cursos semanales de corticoides (39 [49,4%] de 81 pacientes vs 25 [31,7%] de 80 pacientes, p=0,04). Conclusión: Los cursos semanales de corticoides en mujeres con RPM no mejoraron los resultados neonatales por sobre los obtenidos con un curso único, y se asociaron con un riesgo aumentado de corioamnionitis. 16. Geomorphology and land development in the Maraca area of northern Roraima, Brazil.

Abstract

The geomorphological materials and forms of the Maraca area of Roraima, Brazil are described, an their sgnificance for land development examined. Significant contrasts are noted in areas presently under rainforest and savanna vegetation. Lateritic gravels and extensive shetwash accumulations in savanna areas constrast with incipient or absent plinthite development, few gravels and limited evidence of colluvium under rainforest. Terrain is in general relatively highly-dissected. Slope profiles are characterised, particularly within the savanna zone, by a relatively steep lower concavity. These contrasts are sharply-demarcated by the present savanna/rainforest bondary, unexpectedly in view of the generally accepted hypothesis of repeated contraction an expansion of Amazonian rainforest throughout the Pleistocene. It is concluded that geomorphological conditions in the Maraca area are not favorable for land develoment.

17. Soil physical and Chemical properties of cultivated pasture on forest land, Roraima, Brazil .

Abstract

Soil conditions under pasture were examined in a range of sites representing the sequence of conversion of forest to pasture at two locations in the vicinity of Ilha de Maracã, Roraima. Comparisons were made with adjacent savana. Soil bulk densities shown to increase after forest clearance and soil chemical data indicate that the initial beneficial effects on nutrient supply of burning forest debris are rather short-lived. Very low levels of available phosphorus prevail in areas of savanna and cultivated pasture of all ages. Variations in the status of older cultivated pastures are mainly attributable to different grazing levelt.

Abstract

Introduction. The paper describes an interim model for understanding the influences on information use in relation to plagiarism, with a focus on secondary school students. Available literature mostly focuses on the tertiary level and on quantifying the extent of plagiarism, with limited availability of theory or empirical research focussing on information use, learning and plagiarism. Theoretical context: Possible theoretical bases for the model are considered, and the reasons for choosing Williamsons (2005) modified ecological model, as the basis, are outlined. Empirical Research: The data from a pilot study, using ethnographic techniques in a constructivist framework, contributed to the development of the interim model. The study was undertaken with Year 11 students in an Australian country high school. The data analysis from this study was influenced by constructivist grounded theory. Themes and categories were developed from this analysis. Model Development: The themes and categories, together with the gaps in understanding as revealed by the pilot research experience, were used to modify Williamsons ecological model to provide a diagrammatic representation suited to the topic of information use and plagiarism. The themes, encompassing a number of categories which might provide understanding about influences on information use in relation to plagiarism, are people, practices, attitudes and technology. Conclusion. Developing the model gave the researchers new insights at a crucial stage when they were about to embark on a major study, building on their pilot project. Although the target group for the research is secondary school students, the model is applicable to any group of information users.

Abstract

Medir el desarrollo infantil temprano (DIT) mediante pruebas estándar de diagnóstico en estudios a gran escala resulta difícil y costoso. Por esto, con frecuencia se utilizan pruebas de tamizaje multidimensionales y pruebas que miden un solo dominio del desarrollo como alternativas (nos referimos a ellas como 'pruebas cortas'). La validez de las pruebas cortas en estos contextos es desconocida. En este estudio, analizamos la viabilidad, confiabilidad y validez concurrente de algunas de estas pruebas cortas de uso habitual, incluyendo tres pruebas de tamizaje multidimensionales-los Cuestionarios de Edades y Etapas, la Prueba de Tamizaje del Desarrollo de Denver, el Inventario del Desarrollo de Battelle -y dos pruebas que miden un solo dominio del desarrollo- la versión abreviada de MacArthur-Bates y los Hitos del Desarrollo Motor-en 1.311 niños y niñas de 6 a 42 meses en Bogotá, Colombia. Comparamos las puntuaciones obtenidas en estas pruebas cortas con las de las Escalas Bayley de Desarrollo Infantil, prueba que consideramos nuestro patrón de referencia. El Bayley se implementó en un centro por psicólogos, mientras que las pruebas cortas se realizaron en los hogares por encuestadores, tal y como se administrarían en una encuesta de hogar. La validez concurrente de las escalas cognitivas, de lenguaje y de motricidad fina de las pruebas multidimensionales con la escala correspondiente en el Bayley es baja en niños menores de 19 meses, si bien aumenta con la edad convirtiéndose en moderada a alta a partir de los 30 meses. En cambio, la concurrencia de las escalas de motricidad gruesa es alta en menores de 19 meses y disminuye a partir de esta edad. Con respecto a las pruebas que miden un solo dominio del desarrollo, los Hitos del Desarrollo Motor presentan un alto grado de validez con la motricidad gruesa en niños menores de 16 meses, y las escalas de lenguaje expresivo de la versión abreviada de MacArthur-Bates muestran una correlación moderada con el lenguaje en menores de 30 meses. Por dominio del desarrollo, la motricidad gruesa presenta el grado de validez más alto en menores de 19 meses, mientras que en niños de más de 19 meses, el desarrollo del lenguaje es el dominio que obtiene concurrencias mayores. In low- and middle-income countries (LIMCs) measuring early childhood development (ECD) with standard tests in large scale surveys (i.e. evaluations of interventions) is difficult and expensive. Multi-dimensional screeners and single-domain tests ('short tests') are frequently used as alternatives. However, their validity in these circumstances is unknown. We examine the feasibility, reliability, and concurrent validity of three multi-dimensional screeners -the Ages and Stages Questionnaires (ASQ-3), the Denver Developmental Screening Test (Denver-II), the Battelle Developmental Inventory screener (BDI-2) -and two single-domain tests- the MacArthur-Bates Short-Forms (SFI and SFII) and the WHO Motor Milestones (WHO-Motor)-in 1,311 children 6-42 months in Bogota, Colombia. We compare scores on these short tests to those on the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development (Bayley-III), which we take as the 'gold standard'. The Bayley-III was given at a center by psychologists; whereas the short tests were administered in the home by interviewers, as in a survey setting. Concurrent validity of the multi-dimensional tests' cognitive, language, and fine motor scales with the corresponding Bayley-III scale is low below 19 months but increases with age, becoming moderate-to-high over 30 months. In contrast, gross motor scales' concurrence is high under 19 months and then decreases. Of the single-domain tests, the WHO-Motor has high validity with gross motor under 16 months, and the SFI and SFII expressive scales show moderate correlations with language under 30 months. Overall, the Denver-II seems the most feasible and valid multi-dimensional test and the ASQ-3 performs poorly under 31 months. By domain, gross motor development has the highest concurrence below 19 months, and language above. Results do not vary by household socio-economic status. Predictive validity investigation is nonetheless needed to further guide the choice of instruments for large scale studies.

Sin embargo, la información que existe sobre las intervenciones que son efectivas y factibles de ser entregadas a través de los servicios de salud es limitada. En este ensayo se desarrolla y evalúa un programa de apoyo parental que podría ser incorporado a las visitas a los centros de salud de atención primaria. Integrating early childhood interventions with health and nutrition services has been recommended, however there is limited information on interventions that are effective and feasible for delivery through health services. In this trial we developed and evaluated a parenting program that could be integrated into primary health center visits.

Abstract

Objetivo: Este estudio se realizó para evaluar la eficacia de cursos semanales de corticoides comparado con un solo curso en mujeres con rotura prematura de membranas (RPM). Métodos: Se realizó un análisis secundario planificado en mujeres con RPM que participaron en un estudio multicéntrico randomizado de corticoides antenatales en dosis única vs semanales (2). Luego de la administración de la dosis estándar de corticoides entre las 24 y 32+6 semanas de edad gestacional, las mujeres que consintieron en entrar al estudio se asignaron al azar a recibir inyecciones semanales de betametasona vs placebo hasta las 34 semanas. Se comparó la morbilidad materna y neonatal entre los 2 grupos. Resultados: Se enrolaron un total de 161 mujeres con RPM, 81 mujeres se asignaron a recibir cursos semanales de corticoides y 80 recibieron una dosis única. No hubo diferencias significativas en la morbilidad neonatal compuesta entre los dos grupos (27 [34,2%] de 81 pacientes vs 33 [41,8%] de 80 pacientes, p=0,41). Hubo más casos de corioamnionitis en las pacientes que recibieron cursos semanales de corticoides (39 [49,4%] de 81 pacientes vs 25 [31,7%] de 80 pacientes, p=0,04). Conclusión: Los cursos semanales de corticoides en mujeres con RPM no mejoraron los resultados neonatales por sobre los obtenidos con un curso único, y se asociaron con un riesgo aumentado de corioamnionitis. La terapia con corticoides antenatal no debiera repetirse de modo rutinario en pacientes con RPM. Nivel de evidencia: I

Abstract

Cognates have served as a useful tool for investigating the bilingual lexicon inmany studies, but very little research has been carried out on different types ofcognates, specifically, partial cognates and their role in cross-linguistic effect.The present study examines cognate effect in the speech production and acceptabilityjudgment of two groups of highly proficient, late-onset English-Spanish(n = 12) and Spanish-English (n = 12) bilinguals within a single-language (English)context. The findings of two tasks, a production task, whereby participants wereasked to spontaneously produce synonyms to prompt words, and an acceptabilityjudgment task of a variety of sentences including use of false and partial English-Spanish cognates are reported here, framed within non-selective, integrated modelsof lexical representation. The results suggest a significant cognate effect in both bilingualgroups in both tasks compared to their monolingual counterparts with, surprisingly,greater significance demonstrated from L2 to L1 influence, particularly inproduction. These findings add to the growing support for semantic modulation atthe conceptual level of lexical processing in highly proficient bilinguals. doi:10.5294/laclil.2016.9.1.8
