Con el objetivo de estudiar la fauna anfibia en el Cerro Murrucucú (PNN Paramillo,Tierralta, Córdoba), se realizaron muestreos durante los meses de diciembre de2004, enero y febrero de 2005 en diferentes localidades; se utilizaron dos estrategiasde muestreo (búsqueda libre por inspección visual y trampas de caída). En primerainstancia se comparó la riqueza y la abundancia de las especies en tres zonasaltitudinales en uno de los sectores mejor conservados del Cerro. Se encontró queen la parte baja y media predominan las especies de la familia Hylidae, mientras queen la parte alta predominan representantes de la familia Brachycephalidae, en sumayoría especies del género Eleutherodactylus. Se registran 52 especies para el CerroMurrucucú, que representan el 8% del total de especies en Colombia y más del 80% delas documentadas para el Departamento de Córdoba; las cuales están agrupadas en dosórdenes, 10 familias y 26 géneros. Las familias más representativas, Brachycephalidaee Hylidae, concentran un poco más del 50% de las especies. También se registraronpor primera vez 18 especies para el Departamento de Córdoba y se amplia el rangode distribución geográfico de 18 especies y altitudinal de siete de estas. Se tiene elprimer registro de Eleutherodactylus cruentus para Colombia y el primero de E. viejaspara la Cordillera Occidental Colombiana

The Villavicencio Region, at the base of the eastern mountain range, harbors anamphibian fauna consisting of three caecilians, 45 frogs, and one salamander. Thisfauna includes 16 abundant species of frogs and toads that occupy open habitatsand which do not invade forested areas of these lowlands. An additional 24 speciesrequire moist conditions and occur principally in areas supporting forests. Sevenother species are species of the Andean slopes that have their lowest records inthe lowlands. This local fauna is enriched in treefrogs and impoverished in termsof centrolenids and leptodactylids relative to the diversities of various amphibiangroups in the country as a whole.

La fauna de anfibios propia de los páramos colombianos en sentido estricto incluyeúnicamente 39 especies. Los taxa excluidos de listas previas son considerados aquícomo entidades más afines a los bosques andinos que pueden ocupar tambiénhábitats paramizados por intervención humana. La composición de la fauna en lospáramos de Colombia es notablemente diferente a la del país en conjunto, probablementeporque sólo algunos modos reproductivos pueden persistir en el ambienteparamuno. En general, podemos concluir que el número de especies en los páramosde las diferentes regiones ecogeográficas es proporcional al tamaño y grado defragmentación de las islas paramunas, haciendo la salvedad de que los inventariosen la Cordillera Occidental están incompletos. Podemos señalar también en estafauna un componente filogenético recurrente: las especies relacionadas se distribuyensobre el mismo piso térmico o en pisos térmicos adyacentes, es decir, la faunaparamuna parece ser autóctona y no alóctona.

En Colombia se encuentran cinco especies de ranas gladiadoras (del grupo Hyla boans). Hyla wavrini apenas entra a Colombia (se encuentra en el límite oriental del país) e H. rosenbergi es endémica del Chocó biogeográfico. Las otras tres especies tienen distribuciones más amplias. Hyla boans se encuentra en el Chocó biogeográfico, Magdalena Medio y en la región cisandina por debajo de los 1000 m. "Hyla crepitans" se encuentra en el drenaje del Río Magdalena, así como en la parte occidental de los Llanos Orientales y con menor frecuencia en la región Caribe; la especie se distribuye desde el nivel del mar hasta un poco más de los 2000 m. Hyla pugnax se encuentra en las tierras bajas de la región Caribe, Magdalena Medio y también en algunos sitios de la Orinoquia, siempre por debajo de los 500 m. Es bastante común la simpatría entre H. boans e H. rosenbergi pero menos común entre H. boans e "H. crepitans" o H. pugnax. Se han registrado hasta tres especies simpátricas (H. boans, H. pugnax e H. rosenbergi) pero en general no coexisten más de dos especies. El dimorfismo sexual en tamaño es evidente en la especie más pequeña (uH. crepitans ") pero no en las otras. Cada especie muestra variación geográfica en tamaño, tal vez relacionada con la combinación de especies simpátricas.Five species of gladiator frogs (the Hyla boans group) occur in Colombia. Hyla wavrini barely enters Colombia (it is confined to the extreme eastern edge ofthe country) and H. rosenbergi is endemic to the biogeographic Chocó. The other three species are more widely distributed. Hyla boans is found in the Chocó, Middle Magdalena, and Amazonas-Orinoquia below 1QOO m. "Hyla crepitans" is found in the Magdalena drainage as well as the western edge ofthe Orinoquia and less commonly along the Caribbean coast and in the Maracaibo Basin. This species occurs from sea level to more than 2000 m. Hyla pugnax occurs across the Caribbean lowlands and up the Magdalena valley as well as in the Maracaibo Basin and at a few cis-Andean sites, but always below 500 m. Sympatry is relatively common between H. boans and H. rosenbergi but, less common between H. boans and either "H. crepitans" or H. pugnax. Maximal sympatry results in sympatry of H. boans, H. pugnax, and H. rosenbergi - normally no more than two species are sympatric. Sexual dimorphism in size is evident in the smallest species ("H. crepitans ") but not in the others. AHexhibit geographic variation in size, perhaps related to the combination ofsympatric species ofthe group.

Twenty-three species of the genus Eleutherodactylus are reported fram 24 localities in the western lowlands of Valle del Cauca, Colombia, with notes on their identificacion and distributions. Up to 16 species have been taken from a single site. The cloud forest fauna of Eleutherodactylus found on the Cordillera Occidental above the drainages of the Anchicayá, Cajambre, Calima, and Dagua rivers consists of 24 species with up to 18 species being found in a single site.Se da información sobre la identificación y las distribuciones de 23 especies del género Eleutherodactylus de 24 sitios de las tierras bajas del occidente del Valle del Cauca, Colombia. Hasta 16 especies fueron registradas del mismo sitio. La fauna de Eleutherodactylus de los bosques nublados de la Cordillera Occidental en los drenajes de los ríos Anchicayá, Cajambre, Calima, y Dagua consta de 24 especies, con hasta 18 encontradas en un mismo sitio.

A new species of the Eleutherodactylus orcesi group, the smallest member of the group, is described from the Páramo de los Valles (Tolima). It is very similar to E. slmoterus. From the same locality, a new species of dwarf Eleutherodactylus, lacking a tympanum, is described. It appears to be a member of the E. myersi group. Lastly, a new large black Eleutherodactylusis described from páramo and subpáramo habitats of the Cordillera Central. This species is distributed from Antioquia to Cauca. With these three species, fifteen species of Eleutherodactylus are known for páramo and subpáramo habitats of the Cordillera Central north of the Macizo de Pasto. These 15 species be long to tour species groups.Se describe una especie nueva del grupo de Eleutherodactylus orcesi del Páramo de los Valles (Tolima). Esta especie es muy parecida a E. simoterus pero se distingue por su tamaño (la especie nueva es la más pequeña del grupo). Se describe también una especie enanita del Páramo de los Valles que posiblemente es una especie del grupo de Eleutherodactylus myersl. La especie es muy distinta porque carece de tímpano. Finalmente, se describe una especie grande y negra que se encuentra desde Antioquia hacia Cauca en la Cordillera Central. Con estas especies, tenemos 15 especies de Eleutherodactylus conocidas de los páramos y subpáramos de la Cordillera Central al norte del Macizo de Pasto, que pertenecen a cuatro grupos de especies.

La fauna de hílidos en las tierras bajas de Colombia al oriente de los Andes constade 72-73 especies (una identifi cada tentativamente), lo que representa casi el 40% detodas las especies de ranas de la región y un 10% de la fauna total de anuros del país.La mayoría de estas especies se reproducen en ambientes lénticos y pocas taxones lohacen en quebradas lentas, huecos en troncos de árboles y fi totelmas. En este trabajose ilustran los renacuajos de 41 especies, incluyendo ocho especies previamentedesconocidas y tres nunca ilustradas.

Tres veces Director del Instituto de Ciencias Naturales, el Profesor Honorario Pedro M. Ruiz C. falleció en Bogotá el 12 de septiembre de 1998. Con su muerte, Colombia y la ciencia perdieron a un gran trabajador y sus colegas a un gran amigo.

Frogs of the genus Eleutherodactylus constitute a great part of the Colombianfauna. Following Frost (1985), there are approximately 430 species of frogs and toads known from Colombia (Cochran and Gain, 1970, had reported 212 species). In the neotropical region, the genus Eleutherodactylus is dominant in humid zones. This genus has more than 400 described species (Frost, 1985) of which 94 are recorded for Colombia (following Frost). In addition, there are 14 species described by Lynch (1984), Lynch and Rniz (1985), and Rivero (1984) or recently found in Colombia (E. anatipes, E. lythrodes, and E. sulcatus)". Se describen las especies nuevas Eleutherodactylus bernali, E. diaphonus, E. gracilis, y E. molybrignus del grupo unistrigatus. Se encuentran estas especies en los bosques nublados de la Cordillera Central (E. bernali y E. gracilis) y la Cordillera Occidental (E. diaphonus, E. gracilis y E. molybrignus) de Colombia. En la actualidad, no tenemos evidencia suficiente para agrupar las cuatro como un subgrupo del grupo unistrigatus. Las cuatro especies son parecidas unas a otras pero las características son plesiomorfias o son características sin polaridad (en este momento).

Se describen aquí las nuevas especies Eleutherodactylus obmutescens, E. racemus y E. simoterus, del grupo unistrigatus, provenientes de los Páramos de Puracé, Las Hermosas y Letras, respectivamente, en la Cordillera Centralde Colombia. Estas especies son afines a E. orcesi Lynch y E. thymelensis Lynch, conocidas principalmente de páramos en la Cordillera Occidental del Ecuador. Se describen además Eleutherodactylus leptolophus y E. peraticus, tambiéndel grupo unistrigatus, provenientes de los páramos de Puracé y Las Hermosas, respectivamente. Estas son ranas diminutas, muy estrechamente relacionadas con E. myersi (Goin s: Cochran) del Nudo de Pasto, y con E. trepidotus Lynchde los subpáramos de la vertiente oriental de la Cordillera Oriental del Ecuador. Las cinco especies nuevas representan, junto con E. buckleyi (Boulenger), las seis especies de Eleutherodactylus conocidas hasta ahora de los páramos dela Cordillera Central de Colombia.Eleutherodactylus obmutescens , E. racemus, and E. simoterus are new species of the unistrigatus Group named from the Páramo de Puracé, Páramo de las Hermosas and Páramo de Letras, respectively, in the Cordillera Central of Colombia. These are diminutive frogs most closely related toE. myersi (Goin and Cochran) from the Nudo de Pasto and to E. trepidotus Lynch from the subpáramos of the eastern versant of the Cordillera Oriental of Ecuador. The five new species with E. buckleyi (Boulenger) comprise the six species of Eleutherodactylus now known to inhabit páramos in the Cordillera Central of Colombia.

In this contribution previously unpublished information about the geographic variation in Hyla bogotensis (W. Peters) and the tadpole characters is given. Hyloscirtus vermiculatus B. Lutz & Ruiz-C. is regarded as a synonym. The taxonomic status of Hyla platydactyla is discussed and is concluded that it might prove to be not separable from H. bogotensis. New records for H. denticulenta and H. phyllognatha are provided together with descriptive notes. A new species of the H. bogotensis group, H. piceigularis, from the cloud fotest belt of the Departamento de Santander in the Eastern Andes of Colombia, is described based on adults and tadpoles. In addition another new species, H. sarampiona , closely related to H. larinopygion Duellman and H. lindae Duellman & Altig is named from the Pargue Nacional Natural de Munchique in the cloud forest belt of the Western Andes of Colombia.In this contribution previously unpublished information about the geographic variation in Hyla bogotensis (W. Amblyphrynus ingeri es una especie representada hasta ahora solamente por tres ejemplares, todos coleccionados en la Cordillera Oriental de Colombia. Nuevo material demuestra que Amblyphrynus es inseparable del grupo sulcatus de Eleutherodactylus. El grupo sulcatus contiene cinco especies: E. helonotus, E. ingeri, E. maussi, E. sulcatus, y una nueva especie que se describe en este trabajo con base en ejemplares provenientes de las Cordilleras Central y Occidental. La nueva especie y E. ingeri son los miembros más avanzados de este grupo de especies, y estan estrechamente relacionadas con E. sulcatus, una especie amazónica.Amblyphrynus ingeri is known from three specimens, all collected on the Cordillera Oriental of Colombia. New material reveals that Amblyphrynus is inseparable from the sulcatus group of Eleutberodactylus. The sulcatus group contains five species: E. helonotus, E. ingeri, E. maussi, E. sulcatus, and a new species described herein on the basis of specimens from the CordillerasCentral and Occidental. The new species and E. ingeri are the mostderived members of the species group and form a tight cluster with E. sulcatus, an Amazonian species.

The broad-headed eleutherodactyline frogs have been studied by Lynch(1975, 1981). Although frogs of this assembly are easily identified (Lynch,1975, 1976, 1981), the assembly is not a natural group (Lynch, 1986).Recently, Rivero (1984) described a new species, E. sernai, from westernAntioquia, Colombia. Although Rivero associated E. sernai with thebiporcatus group, the species appears to be a member of the sulcatus group(because it possesses the plesiornorphic condition of the mandibular musclesadductors and the trigeminal nerve mandibular ramus. However, this characteristicis not sufficient to place E. sernai within the sulcatus group; theassignment will be defended in a future paper on the osteology of the variousspecies of the group. For the moment, the sulcatus group contains thefollowing species: E. cerasies Lynch, E. cornutus (Jimenez de la Espada),E. helonotus (Lynch), E. ingeri (Cochran and Gain), E. ruizi Lynch, E.sernai Rivero, and E. sulcatus Se describe Eleutherodactylus cadenai sp. nov. de las selvas de la vertiente occidental de la Cordillera Occidental de Colombia (corregimiento .de Murrí, Municipio de Frontino, Antioquia). La especie parece tener un ancestro común con Eleutherodactylus ingeri de los bosques nublados de la Cordillera Oriental de Colombia y las dos tienen parentescos con Eleutherodactylus ruizi de las cordilleras Central y Occidental de Colombia.

Monitoring inequalities in health is fundamental to the equitable and progressive realization of universal health coverage (UHC). A successful approach to global inequality monitoring must be intuitive enough for widespread adoption, yet maintain technical credibility. This article discusses methodological considerations for equity-oriented monitoring of UHC, and proposes recommendations for monitoring and target setting. Inequality is multidimensional, such that the extent of inequality may vary considerably across different dimensions such as economic status, education, sex, and urban/rural residence. Hence, global monitoring should include complementary dimensions of inequality (such as economic status and urban/rural residence) as well as sex. For a given dimension of inequality, subgroups for monitoring must be formulated taking into consideration applicability of the criteria across countries and subgroup heterogeneity. For economic-related inequality, we recommend forming subgroups as quintiles, and for urban/rural inequality we recommend a binary categorization. Inequality spans populations, thus appropriate approaches to monitoring should be based on comparisons between two subgroups (gap approach) or across multiple subgroups (whole spectrum approach). When measuring inequality absolute and relative measures should be reported together, along with disaggregated data; inequality should be reported alongside the national average. We recommend targets based on proportional reductions in absolute inequality across populations. Building capacity for health inequality monitoring is timely, relevant, and important. The development of high-quality health information systems, including data collection, analysis, interpretation, and reporting practices that are linked to review and evaluation cycles across health systems, will enable effective global and national health inequality monitoring. These actions will support equity-oriented progressive realization of UHC.

Context: Quantitative estimates of the magnitude, direction, and rate of change of health inequalities play a crucial role in creating and assessing policies aimed at eliminating the disproportionate burden of disease in disadvantaged populations. It is generally assumed that the measurement of health inequalities is a value-neutral process, providing objective data that are then interpreted using normative judgments about whether a particular distribution of health is just, fair, or socially acceptable., Methods: We discuss five examples in which normative judgments play a role in the measurement process itself, through either the selection of one measurement strategy to the exclusion of others or the selection of the type, significance, or weight assigned to the variables being measured., Findings: Overall, we find that many commonly used measures of inequality are value laden and that the normative judgments implicit in these measures have important consequences for interpreting and responding to health inequalities., Conclusions: Because values implicit in the generation of health inequality measures may lead to radically different interpretations of the same underlying data,we urge researchers to explicitly consider and transparently discuss the normative judgments underlying their measures. We also urge policymakers and other consumers of health inequalities data to pay close attention to the measures on which they base their assessments of current and future health policies.
