At first glance, it doesn't seem as though socialism and health-care reform have a whole lot to do with each other. After all, the most visible "left" position in the current discussion of health-care reform merely advocates for the government to assume the function of national insurer, leaving the delivery of health care - from its often-questionable content to its hierarchical relationships - firmly in place. As such, a single payer, Medicare-for-All insurance program is a modest, even tepid reform. Those of us on the left who have been active in the single payer movement have always seen it as a steppingstone toward health-care justice: until the question of access to care is solved, how do we even begin to address not only health care but also health inequities? How, for example, can working-class Americans, Americans of color, and women demand appropriate, respectful, humane, first-rate care when our ability to access any health-care services at all is so tightly constrained?

As the trees become symptomatic for HLB, an imbalance of plant hormones can be observed in the leaves. This hormonal imbalance exacerbates the symptoms and can lead to more stem-dieback, poor vegetative growth, and fruit drop. Ultimately leading to reduced bearing wood, thus resulting in yield losses and tree decline. Thus, the use of growth-promoting hormones can be beneficial in boosting growth in HLB-affected trees. This article will discuss using three PGRS-cytokinin, auxin, and gibberellic acid (GA) on HLB-affected sweet oranges to improve their growth and productivity.

Grower-led trials in 2022 showed positive results of gibberellic acid (GA) treatment on Hamlin trees in Florida. This article primarily discusses two growers’ trials in detail. Both sites showed improvement in fruit production from the GA application.

Ecología Austral, 24:343-349 (2014) The metacommunity concept and associated models are poorly integrated with the field of landscape ecology. One way to promote synthesis is to identify situations in which specific metacommunity models correspond to specific and explicit spatial patterns in the distribution of communities across space. We explore this possible link using mapped communities of twig-nesting ants on coffee plants from a plantation in southern Mexico. Previous work has shown species sorting to predominate among common species and mass effects among rare species. We test whether differential patterns of spatial clustering among dominant and subdominant ant species correspond to a species sorting and mass effects model, respectively. We find significant clustering among subdominant species in two of six sites and no clustering among dominants. At the species level, significant clustering was observed in 23% of cases. These results partially support our hypothesis and may be explained mechanistically by the interstitial hypothesis, whereby rare species persist in “gaps” among dominants. At the spatial scales we examined, we found no support for the ant-mosaic. Our results suggest further study linking metacommunity models to specific and explicit spatial patterns may yield insights on pattern and process relationships in landscapes.

En este artículo se analizaron los modos de apropiación tecnológica y las subjetividades que emergieron durante la campaña presidencial colombiana de 2018 en Twitter. Se capturaron los tuits de los cinco (5) principales candidatos de la primera vuelta a través de un web crawler, que dio como resultado 6.487 tuits capturados. Con estos resultados se realizó un análisis de contenido y posteriormente un proceso de etnografía virtual que arrojó categorías de enunciación de la campaña: acuerdos de paz, corrupción, castrochavismo y educación. Se seleccionaron siete (7) tuits con mayor número de interacciones, que sumaron 16 361 comentarios, de los cuales se analizó una muestra de 4.760. Algunos de los resultados versan en que los usuarios se apropiaron de la plataforma compartiendo memes, noticias falsas y hashtags para atacar candidatos, lo que sugiere subjetividades emergentes de trolls o bots en vez de ciudadanos digitales. Desde las conclusiones, planteamos que, en Twitter, la política colombiana fue trivializada y los debates estuvieron ausentes.

Este ensayo hace un recorrido histórico sobre los significados que visibiliza la estructura urbana en América Latina desde la Colonia hasta el presente. Partiendo de la separación entre lo rural y lo urbano heredada del mundo colonial, el ensayo muestra las alteraciones que en la gramática urbana y en el imaginario simbólico, produce la explosión urbana de los años sesenta del siglo pasado, lo que constituye una noción deteriorada de espacio público como signo de la ciudad negada, y la posterior conceptualización del espacio público, durante los noventa, como espacio de la diversidad. Al establecer un vínculo entre las perspectivas políticas y económicas de los diferentes momentos históricos de América Latina y la gramática espacial de la ciudad, los autores afirman que esta relación produce un texto que posibilita la comunicación (o incomunicación) entre los ciudadanos y el Estado.

Esta investigación aborda el estudio de los espacios públicos alrededor de las universidades situadas en el perímetro urbano de Barranquilla (Colombia) en términos de legibilidad, identidad y estructura de acuerdo con el concepto de imagen ambiental trabajado pro Kevin Lynch. A partir de observaciones, encuestas y entrevistas, la investigación demuestra que en Barranquilla, las instituciones universitarias situadas en el perímetro urbano han causado un impacto negativo en las zonas que, a su vez, tiene incidencias negativas en los diferentes actores del espacio y que no simboliza lo que debería ser una institución educativa, puesto que si la imagen ambiental es precaria, el proceso pedagógico lo es también.

Este trabajo aborda la importancia de la televisión comunitaria en Colombia para la construcción de identidad y de vínculo social en comunidades marginadas. Describe el marco jurídico de la televisión, muestra cómo la ley de 1995 imposibilitó estos medios y luego se emitió una nueva ley que no los reconoce. Como hipótesis se plantea que en la medida en que éstos abandonaron concepciones de identidad basadas en la tradición por conceptos más dinámicos y produjeron un vínculo social fundado en dinámicas de asociación, el Estado creó un marco jurídico para abolirlos, siguiendo la tradición de exclusión de América Latina.

Este trabajo aborda la descripción de cuatro aspectos fundamentales del problema de las televisiones comunitarias en Colombia jurídico, tecnológico, audiovisual y cultural y plantea que sólo desde una noción de identidad referida al futuro y de una apropiación de los aspectos mencionados es posible construir, desde lo comunitario, un relato audiovisual que, simultáneamente, dé cuenta de la realidad de cada comunidad y compita audiovisualmente con los relatos nacionales e internacionales. Una noción de la identidad como proyecto, en lugar de la limitada visión de búsquedas de anclajes, construye un autorreconocimiento que exige, en lugar de solicitar, el reconocimiento del otro.

This essay focuses on the construction of citizenship from the perspective of globalization as a theoretical model that does not exhaust the visions that the inhabitants of Latín América may build on the citizen exercise. Assuming the city like the space of the liberal project of Modernity, the article raises the incidence of globalization and multiculturalism, like ¡ts co-narration, ¡n contemporary cities. For this, ¡t describes the differences that the concept of “desterritorialización”, produced by show business and market, opérate between the large cities of the First World and those of Latín América. The essay proposes the construction of a new perspective of the city ¡n Latín América, from a conception of culture that does not legítimízes the precarious urban daíly life and restores the notíon of territorial colectivíty Thus, we wíll be able to assume our cities wíthout excluding the great zones of mísery and makíng of the city the space of exercise of a freedom that ¡ncludes , necessaríly, the polítical approach.

Our analysis begins with an examination of the state of Georgia's rationale for the decision regarding social promotion that was based on the perceived views that teachers have on the issue. Research suggests, however, that teachers hold contradictory opinions concerning the use of standardized tests for high stakes decisions, such as promotion, and are not aware of the consequences most children suffer when they fail a grade. Following a discussion that challenges the claims of success in Chicago, Baltimore, and Texas, we explore the viability of choosing litigation as a strategy to stop the use of high stakes tests given the adverse impact they have on protected minorities. From a study of the thirty-nine poorest counties in rural Georgia, the relationships between poverty, race and the Georgia Criterion Referenced Competency Test Results suggest that these tests do have an enormously disparate impact on impoverished African American children. Because chances for educational attainment will be severely limited by this test, most African American children will be discouraged from achieving a high school diploma. As a way to put a face on the data, a case study of a young girl who would probably fail her grade in school if the law was enforced is presented followed by recommendations that argue for changes in education policy and teaching. Rather than mandate a ban on social promotion, the state of Georgia should pursue improvement of socio-economic conditions, education policy and pedagogy.
