ABSTRACT The knowledge deficit of health professionals has been a barrier to expanding and implementing of pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) services, despite the reported benefits of PR for individuals with Chronic Respiratory Disease (CRD). This study aims to assess the preparedness of health care professionals from two Brazilian cities to perform PR in the public health system. This is survey is part of a larger project to implement PR in the Brazilian public health system. A self-administered questionnaire was used to assess the knowledge (19 questions), training (7 questions), confidence (10 questions), and clinical experience (8 questions) of physical therapists (PT) and the multiprofessional team (MT) before a PR workshop. In total, 44 PT and 231 MT answered the questionnaire. The mean total knowledge score was 10±3 for PT and 6±3 for MT. Few physical therapist reported having “a lot” of experience (25%) and confidence (22.7%) to perform PR, as well as sufficient training to conduct the six-minute walk test (27.3%).Even fewer MT reported having “a lot” of experience (10%) and sufficient training (4.8%) to perform PR, as well as to plan the educational program for patients (10%) and the confidence to refer patients to PR (6.5%). This is the first study to evaluate the preparedness of professionals from the Brazilian public health network to provide PR. Notably, both PT and MT have low preparation to perform PR in the studied cities, reinforcing the need for continuing education.

ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE To translate and cross-culturally adapt the COPD in Low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) Assessment (COLA) questionnaire into Brazilian Portuguese, a case-finding instrument for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). METHODS Translation and cross-cultural adaptation were completed in six steps: the original version was translated into Brazilian Portuguese by two native speakers of the target language; the translated versions were synthesized; back-translation was performed by two native speakers of the original language; the back-translation and the Brazilian Portuguese version of the COLA were reviewed and harmonized by an expert committee of specialists; and, then, the pre-final version was tested by 30 health professionals who were asked if the items were clear to understand. The acceptability, clarity, and understandability of the translated version were evaluated. A final review of the questionnaire was produced by the authors and approved by the author of the original questionnaire. RESULTS Some idiomatic, semantic, and experiential inconsistencies were identified and properly adjusted. Item 3 was considered the most unclear item (23,3%). Items 7, 8, and 9 presented clarity above 80% (93%, 90%, and 90%, respectively). Suggestions were discussed and incorporated into the tool and COLA was found to be clear and easy to understand. CONCLUSIONS The Brazilian version of the COLA was easily understood by healthcare professionals and adapted to Brazilian culture. Translation and cultural adaptation of the COLA instrument into Brazilian Portuguese can be an important case-finding instrument for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in Brazil.

Objective: To evaluate the morbidity and mortality of bronchiectasis, its interface with the maintenance of hospitalization rates and unsatisfactory prognostic outcomes, as well as the negative impact on Brazilian public health. Methods: The clinical and epidemiological information came from the IT department of the Brazilian Unified Health System - DataSus, from which the required data was filtered through the SUS - CID10 list of morbidities. Information was sought, in absolute numbers, regarding the hospitalization of bronchiectasis patients, such as gender, age, time and cost of hospitalization, care regime, and the number of deaths due to the disease. Results: From the variables found, it was noted that in the period from January 2008 to February 2020, around 24,087 bronchiectasis patients were hospitalized. 65% of the total number of hospitalizations due to the disease consisted of adults, with a large portion in the productive phase (between 20 and 79 years). 84% of the patients sought health units in an emergency mode and 47% used public services at the time of hospitalization. The Brazilian average length of stay in hospital was estimated at 8.1 days and the cost of the service was around R$ 28 million in the twelve years analyzed. Besides, 698 deaths due to bronchiectasis were recorded in Brazil. Conclusions: Diseases such as bronchiectasis are far from the adequate management that chronic lung diseases require. Despite the significant diagnostic evolution, the etiology and treatment of disease is still questionable, providing unsatisfactory quality of life for bronchiectasis patients.

Abstract Objective: This study aims to evaluate the respiratory function of children and adolescents with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) followed up at a referral center. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with a non-probabilistic sample. Manovacuometry was performed with the measurement of maximal inspiratory pressure (MIP) and maximal expiratory pressure (MEP), and in addition, peak expiratory flow (PEF) and ventilometry were performed to measure forced vital capacity (FVC). Results: In total, 23 individuals were evaluated, with a mean age of 11.6±3.4 years, 56.5% of whom were females. Regarding the classification of OI, 56.5% of the sample belonged to type IV, 30.5% to type III, and 13% to type I. The mean MIP was 64.4% of the predicted, and the mean MEP was 56.2% of the predicted. Overall, the mean PEF was 213.9 L/min, but only 140.6 L/min in the OI type III group. Median FVC was 1.9 L, corresponding to 110% of the predicted. Conclusions: Respiratory function of the study subjects was altered, with respiratory muscle strength values lower than expected in the whole sample, and peak expiratory flow was significantly reduced in the OI type III group.
