The focus of this work is to shed more light on materials and decorating techniques used on a decorated wooden stick of king Tutankhamun. Moreover, the authors were interested in using a developed methodology to unfold the cylindrical decorations of the stick. The botanical species of the wood and bark samples were identified by observing thin sections under an optical transmission light microscope; the decorating materials layered on the wood surface were analyzed by scientific and analytical techniques including optical microscopy (OM), environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM), X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The analyses provided new information concerning the materials and decorating techniques that varied from top to bottom of the same stick. The characterization of this stick represents a first step in determining the materials and decorating techniques used to produce this particular kind of sticks during king's Tutankhamun period.

The focus of this study is to use a multi-analytical approach to map and identify the pigments used on a polychrome wooden coffin (Late Period), as well as to provide a deeper understanding of the painting techniques and the condition of the object. Moreover, the authors are significantly interested in the identification of the wood species. These were identified by observing the thin sections of samples under an optical transmission light microscope; the painted materials layered on the wood surface were analyzed by several scientific and analytical methods. Furthermore, the previous consolidation material and salts were also identified. The application of technical photography provided useful information about the spatial distribution of the surviving original pigments and the materials used in previous restoration interventions, in particular visible-induced luminescence, which played an important role to recognize spatial distribution of areas containing Egyptian blue, even if it is in traces or mixed with other pigments. However complete characterization of the pigments was only possible with the use of other techniques.

The present study demonstrates scientific procedures applied to study mural paintings in two Graeco-Roman tombs of El-Muzzawaka, Dakhla Oases, Egypt. First, a series of analytical methods was applied to determine the chemical and mineralogical composition of pigment and plaster samples collected from the studied tombs. The analyses were performed by means of digitalized optical microscopy (OM), polarized light microscopy (PLM), scanning electron microscopy attached with X-ray microanalysis detector (SEM−EDS), X−ray diffraction analysis (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT−IR). Analyses of the pigment samples revealed Egyptian blue, Egyptian green, green earth, black magnetite, and red/yellow ochres. The paintings were applied on a coarse plaster layer made of gypsum, anhydrite, calcite, and quartz. The preparation layer was made of two phases of calcium sulphate (gypsum and anhydrite). Further, the detection of an organic binder, of gum Arabic, confirms the application of tempera technique. The results showed that the bed rock samples contain variable amounts of quartz, anhydrite, montmorillonite, kaolinite, gypsum, and sodium chloride (halite). In situ observations showed several deterioration forms on the studied mural paintings. The destructive climatic condition of the region and the defects of the rock structure have contributed seriously in the deterioration process. Based on experimental tests, multi restoration procedures were applied in form of cleaning, reattaching paint flakes, applying injection grouts to detached layers, reconstruction of missing parts in the plaster, repair of wide-open cracks, and final protective consolidation of the painted surfaces. Further, recommendations to minimize any future damage were discussed.

The telocytes (TCs) are novel interstitial cells that have been overlooked for a long time due to their histologic similarity to other stromal cells. TCs can be separated from the stromal cells based on their distinct immunohistochemical, ultrastructural, and molecular features. Functionally, TCs are involved in the tissue renewal, mechanical support, and immune modulation. These cells are also involved in the signal transduction either through their direct interactions with the neighboring cells or through the paracrine signaling via extracellular vesicles. TCs are damaged in several inflammatory and fibrotic conditions such as ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, hepatic fibrosis, psoriasis, and systemic sclerosis. The transplantation of TCs in the damaged tissue can promote tissue regeneration. Therefore, enhancing tissue TCs either by their transplantation or by promoting their survival and growth using novel medications represents novel therapeutic strategy in the future. In this review, we addressed several aspects of TCs including their origin, distribution, morphologic features, and functions. Background: Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is common cutaneous malignancy., Aims: To examine the expression patterns of CD10, p63, BCL-2, and epithelial membrane antigen (EMA) proteins in BCC., Materials and Methods: We used immunohistochemistry to evaluate the expression pattern of these proteins in 45 BCC specimens and their adjacent normal skin., Results: We found variations in the expression pattern of these proteins among normal skins and BCC. In normal skins, we found strong EMA cytoplasmic expression (adnexal structures). A strong nuclear p63 protein expression was found in basal and some suprabasal keratinocytes, external root sheath cells of the hair follicles, basal cells of the sebaceous glands, and in sweat glands.CD10 protein expression was seen in peri-adnexal mesenchymal spindle cells and myoepithelial cells of sweat glands.BCL-2 protein expression was confined to the basal cell keratinocytes, epidermal melanocytes, outer root sheath, and infundibulum of the hair follicle. In BCC, we found p63 (diffuse, strong nuclear staining), CD10 (focal, moderate cytoplasmic reactivity), and BCL-2 (focal, moderate cytoplasmic reactivity) protein expression in the neoplastic cells. BCC was consistently negative for EMA (except in areas of squamous differentiation)., Conclusions: There is an altered expression of these proteins in BCC. Background: Lichen sclerosus (LiS) is a chronic scleroatrophic condition that usually affects the anogenital area and occasionally the extragenital sites. CD34-positive dermal dendritic cells (DDCs) contribute to the maintenance of the dermal microarchitecture and modulation of the immune response. p53 is a tumor suppressor gene important for the regulation of the cell cycle and apoptosis. Similar to morphea (a LiS-closely related scleroatrophic condition), dermal sclerosis, alterations of DDCs, and dermal microvasculature may be important underlying pathogenetic mechanisms in LiS., Objectives: To examine the profile of CD34-positive DDCs, microvessel density (MVD), and p53 protein in LiS., Materials and Methods: The immunohistological profiles of DDCs, MVD, and p53 were examined in 19 cases of LiS and their age- and sex-matched normal skin (10 specimens), using antibodies against CD34 and p53., Results: There was a markedly decreased counts (1.7±0.5/mm 2 ) or complete loss of CD34-positive DDCs in LiS against their abundance in the normal skin (23.4±2.1/mm 2 , p=0.000). MVD was markedly increased in LiS lesions (20±0.47) as compared to normal skin (5.50±0.20, p=0.000). Discontinuous single-cell p53 weakly positive nuclear staining was seen in the epidermal basal cell keratinocytes in normal skin and LiS lesions., Conclusions: To the best of this author's knowledge, this is the first study analyzing DDCs, MVD, and p53 profiles together in LiS. Background: Nevi of special sites (NOSS) are benign melanocytic lesions that occur at particular sites. Although the histological features of NOSS have been described, their immunophenotypic features have not been fully characterized., Aims: To present the clinicopathological characteristics of a case series of NOSS and to characterize their immunohistochemical profile., Materials and Methods: Thirty-five NOSS were assessed using immunoperoxidase staining techniques for the melanocytic (S100, Melan-A, and HMB45) and proliferation (Ki-67) markers RESULTS: All of the cases of NOSS showed concerning architectural changes (prominent lentiginous melanocytic proliferation, irregularities, crowdedness, and dyhesiveness of the nests), and cytological atypia (large nevomelanocytes with vesicular nuclei, clear cytoplasm, and dusty melanin pigment) that can lead to a misdiagnosis of atypical nevi or even melanomas. All of the cases of NOSS showed diffuse expression of S100 and Melan-A proteins. Ki-67 labeling index of the nevomelanocytes was extremely low. HMB45 protein expression was limited to the junctional and superficial dermal nevomelanocytes., Conclusions: NOSS can show histological features that can easily mimic atypical nevi or melanomas and this diagnostic consideration should be kept in mind to avoid their misdiagnosis. The expression of HMB45 protein in NOSS indicates that their nevomelanocytic cells have an activated phenotype. The decreased HMB45 protein expression following a gradient from junctional to deeper dermal localization in NOSS is indicative of their immunohistochemical maturation., (Copyright © 2020 AEDV. Objective: We undertook a review of patients with chest trauma attended between January 1992 and June 2005 in order to establish severity criteria in these cases., Patients and Methods: During the study period, 1,772 cases (1,346 [76%] males) were treated, with ages ranging from 7 to 98 years (mean, 46.4 years). The Revised Trauma Score (RTS) was calculated and the following variables were also studied as potential indicators of severity: age, extent of the injury, number of rib fractures, presence of lung contusion, hemothorax, cardiorespiratory repercussions, and need for mechanical ventilation., Results: At the time of admission, 84.4% of patients presented only symptoms related to the injury, with no general repercussions, and 66.7% had an RTS of 12. The number of rib fractures was a reliable indicator of severity, as was the presence of multiple injuries, lung contusion, need for mechanical ventilation, and cardiorespiratory repercussions. Neither age nor presence of hemothorax was found to be an indicator of severity. Pleural drainage was performed in 756 cases and was effective in 670 (88.6%)., Conclusions: There are a number of indicators of severity in chest trauma, related more closely to the type and repercussions of the trauma than to the age of the patient. There is a high incidence of fluid or gas accumulation in the pleural space, though this can be easily managed by pleural drainage, which constitutes the main therapeutic procedure in chest trauma.

Thymolipoma is an uncommon benign tumor (accounting for 2% to 9% of thymus tumors). We present the case of a 26-year-old man who sought medical attention for left-sided pleural pain of 3 months duration. Computed tomography showed a mass in the left side of the chest occupying both the anterior mediastinum and the left pleural cavity. This mass caused lung collapse and mediastinal shift. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a large fatty tumor and transthoracic biopsy with radiological guidance confirmed the diagnosis. The tumor was resected through a left thoracotomy. No postsurgical complications occurred and the histopathological diagnosis was thymolipoma.

Objectives: The cumulative experience gleaned from the NICE trials suggests that adjunctive enoxaparin therapy for percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA), with or without concomitant abciximab therapy, is both safe and effective. However, no randomized studies have been conducted to compare the two strategies. The aim of this study was to evaluate the safety of combined enoxaparin-abciximab compared with standard therapy using unfractionated heparin and abciximab., Patients and Method: Ninety-nine patients undergoing PTCA were randomly assigned to receive either enoxaparin (enoxaparin group, 50 patients, 0.75 mg/kg) or unfractionated heparin (UH group, 49 patients, 70 U/kg) in an intravenous bolus. Both groups received standard abciximab treatment. The aPTT, creatine kinase (CPK), MB, troponin I, hemoglobin, and platelet count were determined 5 h and 17 h after PTCA. Endpoints were major bleeding and clinical or biochemical in-hospital events., Results: There was less major bleeding in the enoxaparin group than in the UH group (1 vs 4) but the difference was not statistically significant. There were no significant differences in the frequency of in-hospital clinical events. There was a lower increase in aPTT at 5 h in the enoxaparin vs UH group (p = 0.02). It was impossible to remove the introducer in 7 of the UH group patients due to aPTT > 60 s as opposed to 1 patient in the enoxaparin group. Post-procedural CK elevation occurred in 8.0% of the enoxaparin group and in 6.1% of the UH group (p = NS). No thrombocytopenia was observed in either group., Conclusions: Combined enoxaparin-abciximab as an adjuvant therapy during PTCA was safe and associated with a low incidence of major bleeding, major ischemic in-hospital events, and post-procedural CPK elevation.

Introduction and Objectives: Abciximab has been shown to reduce the risk of thrombotic complications during coronary angioplasty, however there are still many aspects to be resolved. The aim of this study was to investigate the various biological effects of abciximab on platelets during coronary angioplasty., Methods: The degree of platelet inhibition (with 5 and 20 mol/l concentrations of ADP), occlusion time (measurement of platelet haemostatic capacity, PFA-100), and the platelet activation markers were determined in 15 patients who underwent basal coronary angioplasty and abciximab treatment. Determinations were obtained before, 15 minutes after procedure initiation, at procedure termination, and 24 hours after procedure termination., Results: More than 80% platelet aggregation inhibition was observed in 13 patients during the procedure, but after 24 hours (p < 0.05) was only detected in two. The occlusion time during the procedure was > 300 sec. in 13 patients, 6 of whom evolved to normal values after 24 hours (p < 0.05). A high correlation (p = 0.02) was found between these two parameters during the intervention, but not after 24 hours. No platelet inhibition or occlusion time changes were observed in 2 patients during the study. The expression of p-selectin increased significantly during the procedure (p < 0.05)., Conclusions: The variability of platelet function inhibition and existence of circulating activation during coronary angioplasty following the administration of abciximab support the use of early analytical controls with the objective of modifying guidelines for use in order to optimize its effect or to combine it with other antithrombotic agents.

Diaphragmatic recurrence of a thymoma is rare. We report the case of a 70-year-old woman who underwent transternal thymectomy and adjuvant radiation therapy, and who was admitted four years later with recurrence of the thymoma in the left hemidiaphragm with infiltration of the inferior ipsilateral pulmonary lobe. The thymoma was excised along with the left hemidiaphragm, chest wall and three ribs and an atypical segmentectomy of the left lower lobe was performed. The hemidiaphragm was reconstructed and the chest wall was repaired with synthetic mesh. Surgery was complemented with radiotherapy.

Thoracotomy is used to approach and treat anterior spinal lesions arising from various causes. Between 1990 and 1997, we treated 56 patients (40 men and 16 women) between 14 and 67 years old (mean 38.4). All had spinal lesions that were impossible or difficult to reach by a posterior approach. Thirty-one (55.3%) had suffered spinal damage, 8 (14.3%) had spinal deformities, 7 (12.5%) had metastatic tumors, 5 (8.9%) had herniated discs, 4 (7.1%) had Pott's disease and 1 (1.8%) had osteolysis at D6. Thoracotomy was left-sided in 35 cases (62.5%) and right-sided in 19 (33.9%). Video-assisted thoracoscopy was used twice (3.6%). The level of incision was based on the site of the lesion, and the pleural cavity was opened in all cases except one. The posterolateral pleuro-diaphragmatic fold was dissected and the diaphragm opened for retroperitoneal access in 37 cases (66.1%) of thoracolumbar disease. Orthopedic treatment consisted of autologous bone grafts in all cases and placement of a Kaneda splint in 32 cases (57.1%). One patient had to undergo surgery a second time due to inappropriate placement of the vertebral splint. Pneumothorax occurred in one patient after removal of pleural drains. The incision became infected in one patient, and one case of ileal paralysis was observed. Overall, morbidity was 7.1%. We conclude that thoracotomy offers a good alternative approach to spinal lesions. Results are good and morbidity low.

The introduction of video-assisted thoracic surgery (VTS) has significantly furthered the use of the thoracoscope in surgery. In the case we describe, a 79-years-old man at high risk for surgery came to our hospital with hemothorax due to trauma. The necessary procedure was performed successfully with VTS, which allowed for the repair of an acute condition that would otherwise have been treated conventionally by way of posterolateral thoracotomy. We conclude that VTS may play an important role in the diagnosis and treatment of certain thoracic injuries, so that surgery involving more extensive bleeding is rendered unnecessary.

We conducted a retrospective study of patients treated in our department for primary spontaneous pneumothorax (PSP) between 1986 and 1993. The 495 patients were between 12 and 81 years old (mean 28.2 years). Four hundred fifteen (83.8%) were men and 80 (16.2%) were women. PSP was in the right lung in 262 cases (52.9%) and in the left lung in 215 (43.5%). Both sides were affected in 18 cases (3.6%). The initial treatment was pleural drainage; small caliber drains were used in 85 and no associated complications were observed. On 185 occasions (37.3%), patients required surgical repair as a result of air leaks, recurrence or acute hemorrhage. There were postsurgical complications in 15 cases (8.1%) but no recurrences or deaths after surgery. We observed no significant differences in the number of recurrences after use of conventional drains or small caliber drains. Nor were there differences in mean time of hospital stay or complications after conventional surgery or video assisted surgery, a technique that has only recently been introduced. We conclude that PSP responds well to treatment with pleural drains and that small caliber catheters offer a good alternative for treating first episodes. Surgery is indicated when there is recurrence or when air leaks are persistent. At present, video assisted thoracoscopic surgery has successfully replaced axillary thoracotomy for most patients.
