In eutrophic environments, aquatic weeds reproduce rapidly, occupying extensive areas of the waterbody and preventing the multiple use of water resources. The use of the biomass of these plants invermicomposting represents a sustainable alternative utilization of the excess biomass produced byeutrophication. The enrichment of macrophyte biomass during vermicomposting was tested using aninorganic solution (NPK1:75% and NPK3:50%) and an organic solution with glucose (0:25g=L and0:50g=L) to improve the quality of the vermicompost. The consumption of biomass of the macrophytesby theEisenia fetidaincreased as the vermicomposting progressed, reaching the highest values atthe end of the experimental period. The control treatment, i.e., without earthworms, remained stable.The electrical conductivity tended to increase for the treatments NPK1:75%, Glucose0:25g=L andGlucose0:50g=L. The pH of the vermicomposting tended to be neutral in all treatments. The controland inorganic treatments showed a reduction in macrophyte biomass and the number of individualsofEisenia fetida. The additions of NPK and glucose slightly improved vermicompost quality andbiomass consumption by the earthworms. However, using vermicompost alone does not meet therequirements for its use as a fertilizer. Thus, we suggest the use of vermicompost in association withother fertilizers, adding moisture and structuring the soil.

Because COVID-19 has been recognised as one of the most important pandemics in the history of humankind, in recent years many scientists have investigated the effect of the disease on various aspects of mental and physical human health. This article presents a literature review regarding the effect of SARS CoV-2 infection on the symptoms, diagnostics, and treatment of diabetes. It discusses the effect of infection with virus SARS-CoV-2 on the course of type 1 and type 2 diabetes as well as the frequency of occurrence of the disease in patients affected by COVID-19. Moreover, it presents information on the pharmacotherapy and way of providing services by doctors during the pandemic. According to the literature, infection with virus SARS CoV-2 causes a general inflammation of the organisms and numerous metabolic and hormonal disturbances, and therefore affects the course of diabetes. It may lead not only to serious metabolic complications in the course of early diabetes, but also to the development of the disease. It was determined that infection with COVID-19 in diabetes patients (mainly type 2) increases the risk of complications (such as acute respiratory failure, multi-organ failure, and death).

El impacto de los cambios bioquímicos en el adulto mayor tiene el mismo factor en común ya que, presentan alteraciones en su vejez y los descritos se ven en el metabolismo de la glucosa como: morfológicos y funcionales. Los primeros se asocian a un aumento de grasa visceral, infiltración grasa de tejidos y menor masa de células beta, los segundos se observan en una mayor producción de adipocinas factores inflamatorios, al igual que, una mayor resistencia insulínica y diabetes. Los cambios en el metabolismo lipídico fluctúan y alteran las lipoproteínas, colesterol y triglicéridos; se puede evidenciar al medir dichos analitos séricos provocando así dislipidemias. La investigación está enfocada en identificar los principales cambios bioquímicos en los análisis de glucosa y perfil lipídico (colesterol, triglicéridos, HDL y LDL) en una población de 89 adultos mayores de la provincia de Tungurahua, Ecuador, a través de un estudio con diseño descriptivo, transversal, de campo. Mediante el software Minitab versión 18.1, se pudo determinar que con un intervalo de confianza del 95% no existen cambios en los analitos de glucosa, colesterol total, HDL y LDL. Por otra parte, con un intervalo de confianza del 95% del 100%, el 14% pueden tener un valor sobre los 150mg/dL en el analito de triglicéridos tanto en hombres como en mujeres. El porcentaje de pacientes con tendencia a padecer cambios bioquímicos es relativamente bajo en nuestra investigación, por lo que se ha determinado como un factor protector la actividad física que desarrollan los pacientes del estudio dado su forma de trabajo, pese a ello se destaca a la hipertrigliceridemia en un 14%. Asimismo, un alto porcentaje de pacientes geriátricos manifiesta haber desarrollado diabetes en un 64% (n= 57), pero demuestran un escaso conocimiento de la enfermedad, ya que dicen padecerla, pero no se refleja en los resultados de laboratorio que presenten tal enfermedad.

The specialized herds of the high tropics of Nariño are characterized by semi-intensive breeding models, that is, feeding based on grazing and supplementation. The objective was to analyze the milk production of grazing Holstein cows under conditions of the high tropics, taking into account the energetic and protein metabolites, and their relationship with the dry matter intake (CMS/Kg/d), the body condition (BC), and the reproductive variables. Three periods of lactation were evaluated, thus, between 4-10 days (P1), 45-55 days (P2), and between 185-200 days (P3). The investigation was carried out in four dairy production farms. The forage supply consisted of a mixture of Lolium hybridum, Cenchrus clandestinus Hoschst ex Chiov, Holcus lanatus and Trifolium repens, plus commercial concentrate. A total of 24 Holstein animals (six per productive system) from three births onwards were used, from which blood samples were obtained to determine: non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), triglycerides, cholesterol, glucose, total protein (PT), and blood urea nitrogen (BUN). The results showed that milk production during P1 is influenced by CC and body weight (Kg) by +0.04 liters of milk per unit of change in this variable. In P2, the positive incidence variables were PT, BUN, glucose, NEFA, BHB, triglycerides, and cholesterol, and in P3, the increase in CMS made it possible to show that as lactation progresses in more than 180 days, the animals substantially improve their body condition; likewise the NEFA and BHB indicators are related to a better reproductive response.

The impact of altitude on the different sugars and acids of the feijoa fruit is unknown. For that reason, the objective of this study was to evaluate the altitudinal effect on the content of organic acids (citric and malic) and sugars (glucose, fructose, and sucrose) during the development of feijoa fruits. The study took place in the towns of Tenjo (2,580 m asl with 12.3°C, 76.4% RH, 190mm precipitation) and San Francisco de Sales (1,800 m asl, with 18.5°C; 86.1% RH, 573 mm precipitation), located in Cundinamarca (Colombia). In the first locality (Tenjo), the fruits developed with 1,979 growth degree days (GDD) (180 days after anthesis (daa), while in the second locality (San Francisco), 2,728 GDD were required (155 daa). For organic acids, the predominant acid was citric. During the fruit development, the contents of these acids presented low values with a later irregular behavior, finally showing 14.21mg g-1 FW (fresh weight) at harvest for citric acid at San Francisco and 7.95mg g-1 FW at Tenjo. For malic acid, 9.14mg g-1 FW was recorded in San Francisco, and 6.88mg g-1 FW in Tenjo, with significant differences for citric acid between altitudes. The monosaccharides fructose and glucose increased during fruit development. However, the disaccharide sucrose showed a significant much higher content at 2,580 m asl (4.27mg g-1 FW) than at 1,800 m asl (1.03mg g-1 FW), for which it is concluded that the higher temperature in the low locality originated greater respiration and loss of sucrose in the fruit.

Background. During the implementation of the project "Physiological activity of uric acid", our group discovered four variants of the combination of levels of uricemia and uricosuria in patients with chronic pyelonephritis in the remission phase, which are accompanied by characteristic constellations of parameters of the autonomic nervous, endocrine, and immune systems, the levels of which correlate with uricemia and/or uricosuria. The aim of this study is to clarify the relationship between parameters of exchange of uric acid and other metabolites. Materials and methods. Under an observations were 34 males (23-70 years) and 10 females (33-76 years) with chronic pyelonephritis in the phase of remission. The object of the study was serum and urine levels of uric acid as well as calcium, magnesium, phosphates, chloride, sodium, potassium, creatinine, urea and glucose. Results. Among all registered parameters, 12 were identified as characteristic of the four variants of uric acid metabolism. The discriminant model includes, in addition to uricosuria and uricemia by definition, blood levels of creatinine, urea, glucose, phosphates, magnesium, and potassium, creatinineuria as well as body mass index, electrokinetic index and sex index. According to the results of the canonical correlation analysis, it was established that balneotherapy-induced concomitant changes in uricosuria and uricemia positively determine changes in diuresis and excretion of urea, magnesium, sodium, phosphates, calcium, potassium and chloride, as well as calciumemia and magnesiumemia. Conclusion. The uric acid molecule, as a structural analog of methylxanthines and adenosine, exerts the metabolic effects, probably, as the consequences of its neuro-endocrine effects.

This study aimed to determine protein and energy metabolites in postpartum Brown Swiss cows and their effect on the presence of subclinical ketosis and reproductive parameters. One hundred cows from four farms in the Mantaro Valley (Junín, Perú) were grouped according to parity (1, 2, 3 and 4). The variables of the metabolic profile (total proteins, blood urea nitrogen [BUN], glucose, βhydroxybutyrate [B-HB]), milk production and body condition were estimated between 7 to 60 days postpartum in 7-day intervals. Likewise, the calving-first heat interval and the pregnancy rate at first service were recorded. The determination of subclinical ketosis was based on a semi-quantitative analysis by levels of B-HB in milk (µmol/l) using a commercial kit. Objectives: To determine the diagnostic performance of the lipid accumulation product (LAP), visceral adiposity index (VAI), triglyceride and glucose index (TyG) and body mass index (BMI) for metabolic syndrome (MetS) in a sample of Peruvian adults. Methodology: Study of diagnostic tests of the “National Survey on Nutritional, Biochemical, Socioeconomic, and Cultural Indicators related with Chronic Degenerative Diseases”. An analysis of ROC curves (Receptor Operation) was made, and their respective area under the curve (AUC) obtaining the different parameters such as sensitivity (Sens) and specificity (Spe). It was stratified according to sex and according to age. To choose the cut-off point, the Youden index was used. Results: The LAP had the highest AUC in both men (AUC = 0.929; cut-off value = 59.85; Sens = 91.6 and Spe = 84.5) and for women (AUC = 0.950; cut-off value = 53, 06; Sens = 92.4 and Spe = 86.4). The second place, in the case of men, was occupied by the VAI (AUC = 0.905; cut-off value = 2.36; Sens = 91.6 and Spe = 79.7), while in the case of women it was the TyG (AUC = 0.914; cut-off value = 8.70; Sens = 87.4 and Spe = 87.3). The LAP index showed significant differences with VAI to predict MetS (p < 0.05), while no differences were shown with TyG. Conclusion: The LAP index had the best diagnostic performance for MetS, both for men and women, regardless of age.

ABSTRACT Objective To present a study protocol to compare glucose and reflexology in pain relief in neonate intensive care during arterial punctures. Methods A randomized, controlled, double-blind clinical trial protocol will be carried out at a teaching hospital maternity, with30 newborns admitted to neonate intensive care who are to undergo blood collection by arterial puncture. They will be randomly assigned to a control group (25% glucose) or an intervention group (foot reflexology). The primary outcome will be neonate pain scores during and after arterial puncture. Secondary outcomes will be crying time and variation in neonates' vital signs during and after the arterial puncture procedure. Registration number RBR-639bff. Discussion The results of this trial will provide new insights into the most appropriate intervention for the relief of neonate pain during painful procedures.

Abstract Mango (Mangifera indica L.) is one of the most important tropical fruits with inimitable taste, unique flavor, fragrance, and therapeutic traits. It is the national fruit of Pakistan and is commonly called the king of fruits, however, it is very challenging to protect the keeping quality of the fruit. To enhance the shelf life and overcome the microbial count, edible biodegradable (aloe-pectin) coatings were applied on minimally processed (osmotically treated) fresh-cut mango slices. Pre-treatment of Osmotic Dehydration (OD) was performed at 45 °C for 3 hours by 55 °Brix solutions of sucrose and glucose, respectively. The coating solution was made by aloe vera gel with combination of 0.2% CaCl2 (w/v) and 0.5% pectin (w/v). Total Fungal Count (TFC) (yeast and mold growth), Moisture Contents (MC), and Total Soluble Solids (TSS) of minimally processed (osmo-coated) mango slices were analyzed during 15 days of storage at 5 °C. A minimum increase in Total Fungal Count (TFC) from 1.00 to 2.53 Log CFU/g, TSS from 25.30 to 27.16 °Brix, and a decrease in moisture contents from 62.43 to 60.65% was observed in double-coated with osmo-sucrose treated (osmotic dehydration in 55˚Brx sucrose solution before coating) samples from 0 to 15 days respectively. However, significant changes in the TFC, moisture contents, and TSS, were observed in double-coated with osmo-glucose treated (osmotic dehydration in 55 °Brix glucose solution before coating) samples after 10 days of storage. According to the results of the current study, the aloe-pectin coating can significantly reduce the TFC, decrease the TSS, and minimize the moisture loss during storage, when used after osmo-sucrose pre-treatment.

Non-alcoholic liver disease is associated with liver injury, such as steatosis, steatohepatitis, fibrosis and cirrhosis. During their development, inflammation is occure and organs damage develops by help of cytokines influences. The intensity of injury depends on sex. The aim of the study was to evaluate changes of interleukins in the blood of male and female rats with hepatosis, hepatitis used by overdrinking of glucose. Material and methods of investigation. The experiments were performed on 60 male and 60 female outbred rats aged from four monthes (start of experiment). Animals were divided into five groups – control 1 (6 monthes old animals), control 2 (8 monthes old animals), glucose 2 monthes (3), glucose 4 monthes (4), and glucose 2+2 monthes (5). Determined in the blood serum Tumor Necrosis Factor Alpha (TNF-α), Interleukin 1 Beta (IL-1β), Interleukin 4 (IL-4), Interleukin 10 (IL-10). Results. In 3, 4 and 5 groups we determined increasing of proinflammatory interleukins. When comparing the results of 5 groups with 3 in male rats, lower values of anti-inflammatory interleukins were noted with a reliably insignificant difference in the content of pro-inflammatory interleukins. Interleukins changes were not detected in rats female between groups 5 and 3.When comparing 3 and 4 groups, an increase in TNF-α and IL-1β, a decrease in IL-4 and IL-10 both in males and in females were determing, which depended on the duration of glucose consumption. When comparing groups 5 and 4 in males rats, only TNF-α decreased, which can be regarded as a decrease in destructive processes when glucose consumption is stopped. In females, we see a decrease in TNF-α and IL-1β, an increase in IL-4 and IL-10, which may indicate a decrease in the effect of glucose or its long-term effect, since the results of groups 3 and 5 in female rats did not differ. Conclusion. An increase in the content of pro-inflammatory interleukins and a decrease in anti-inflammatory interleukins was detected after 2 months, 4 months of glucose use, which is maintained for 2 months after the cessation of its use only 2 months and depends on the duration of glucose use. In males, the inflammatory reaction is more than in females.

Introduction and purpose. Physical activity is an integral part of a healthy lifestyle, and the far-reaching benefits of practising it are invaluable. Raising awareness in this regard seems to be a key element in the prevention of civilization diseases. This study aimed to assess the knowledge of amateur athletes about the influence of physical effort on changes in selected biochemical parameters. Material and methods. In the study that was conducted using the questionnaire method and electronically using the proprietary form, one hundred physically active people participated. The survey consisted of single-choice and multiple-choice questions as well as open-ended questions. It collected information on (1) demographic and social characteristics, (2) anthropometric measurements, (3) type and duration of physical activity, (4) frequency and time of the training, (5) existing diseases and (6) knowledge about glucose, insulin, lipid profile, alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), creatine kinase. The key questions concerned the influence of physical activity on the studied biochemical parameters. Results. The vast majority of respondents revealed a good knowledge of insulin and insulin resistance, carbohydrate metabolism and creatine kinase. The average results of correct answers amounted to 90%, 79% and 71%. The knowledge of the issues related to the lipid profile, and both ALT and AST was slightly worse. Here the distribution of the proper answers was respectively 62% and 60%. Conclusions. Properly conducted education on the influence of physical activity on selected biochemical parameters could be the best solution to broaden the knowledge on this subject.

The development and commercialization of glucose sensors and insulin pumps has revolutionized the management of diabetes. These devices have been linked to multiple cases of contact dermatitis in recent years, however, giving rise to a growing interest in identifying the sensitizing allergens. Isobornyl acrylate was clearly identified as one of the main allergens responsible for contact dermatitis among users of the FreeStyle glucose sensor and was subsequently removed from the product ingredients. Remarkably, however, it is still used in most other sensors on the market. The common adhesive ingredients colophony and abietic acid derivatives have also been shown to be sensitizing agents. New components under study, such as dipropylene glycol diacrylate, N,N-dimethylacrylamide, and triethylene glycol methacrylate have recently been identified as allergens, though they are not commercially available for clinical testing. The benefits offered by glucose sensors and insulin pumps may be offset by sensitization to product ingredients, in some cases forcing discontinuation and diminishing quality of life. Dermatologists should play a role in this clinical and research scenario, offering case-by-case guidance to endocrinologists on skin care and possible alternatives for patients with glucose sensors and insulin pumps who develop contact dermatitis. Lactose malabsorption is generally assessed by hydrogen breath testing (HBT). However, this test is not recommended in patients with high baseline hydrogen concentrations (H2B). In addition, breath testing is not recommended in the current situation created by the COVID-19 pandemic, due to the potential infectiveness of the samples. The objective is to assess concordance between HBT and lactose tolerance test (LTT) depending on H2B concentrations.

The study aimed to evaluate the effect of a prolonged fast (5 days) on some blood biochemical components involved in energy metabolism. Twenty male alpacas of two-year-old were used in two treatments (experimental and control). Blood samples were taken in the morning for five days to quantify serum glucose, protein, and urea levels by spectrophotometry and ketone bodies using semi quantitative test strips. The results show that the average glucose, protein, and urea of the alpacas subjected to fasting are different from the control group (P≤0.05). Glucose levels decrease while protein, and urea levels increase over time. The presence of acetoacetate was not detected during the five days of fasting. It is concluded that prolonged fasting in alpacas alters the animal's metabolic process, both quantitatively and qualitatively, modifying the substrates and products involved in energy production.

ABSTRACT We assessed the effect of stocking density on physiological parameters (blood lactate, glucose, cortisol, hematocrit), water quality (temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, unionized ammonia, carbon dioxide), and survival during the transportation of fingerling (24.5 ± 4.7 g) and juvenile (615.8 ± 122.2 g) pirarucu (Arapaima gigas) for six hours in plastic bags. The tested densities were 65, 80, 95, 110 and 125 g L-1 for fingerlings, and 50, 80, 110, 140 and 170 g L-1 for juveniles (three replicates each). Parameters were measured prior to and immediately after transportation, and at 24 and 96 hours recovery after transportation. No mortality was observed, except for fingerlings (< 3%) at densities of 110 and 125 g L-1 during recovery. All the water quality parameters were significantly altered after the transportation of fingerlings and juveniles. Water temperature, dissolved oxygen, carbon dioxide and unionized ammonia increased, but pH decreased. Only carbon dioxide and unionized ammonia differed among densities. Cortisol levels did not increase over time, except for the juveniles at 170 g L-1, which still had high cortisol after 96 hours. Glucose significantly increased after transportation for all the treatments and returned to the initial values during the recovery period. Conversely, the lactate values were still high after 96 hours. Hematocrit was assessed only for juveniles and was significantly lower after transportation. We conclude that fingerling and juvenile pirarucu can be safely transported at densities up to 95 g L-1 and 140 g L-1, respectively.

ABSTRACT Rice is one of the main foods consumed by half of the world’s population. The rice crop requires plenty of water, but upland rice is cultivated in a non-flooded environment, although its productivity is lower than that of lowland rice. Rice grains mostly consist of starch, which is synthesized from the non-structural carbohydrates imported from the vegetative organs. The long-term storage of carbohydrates plays a remarkable role in maintaining the supply of photoassimilates during grain filling if photosynthesis does not meet energy demand. Therefore, the dynamics of non-structural carbohydrates is central to the productivity of rice crops. The present study aimed to determine the non-structural carbohydrate content and soluble carbohydrate profiles in different vegetative organs of upland rice of the genotype BRS Esmeralda. The content was determined at the end of vegetative development. The identification and quantification of carbohydrates were performed by high-performance anion-exchange chromatography with pulsed amperometric detection. Fully expanded leaf blades, expanding leaf blades, and expanding stems exhibited the soluble carbohydrate content of 59.7, 53.3, and 52.3 mg g-1 DM, respectively. The stem was found to be the main organ for the long-term storage of non-structural carbohydrates, wherein the starch content was 36.1 mg g-1 DM. It also contained soluble carbohydrates such as glucose, fructose, and sucrose. The non-structural carbohydrates were found in low amounts in the roots, showing that this organ does not store long-term carbohydrates.
