1. Predicting Exertion from Metabolic, Physiological and Cognitive Variables in Older Adults

Abstract

Objetivo. Determinar la asociación entre el esfuerzo percibido (VEP) y variables fisiológicas y determinar los factores predictivos de VEP durante el esfuerzo submáximo y máximo en adultos mayores. Método. Adultos mayores de Kansas (n = 100) y Costa Rica (n = 79) realizaron una prueba de esfuerzo submáxima y máxima. Se recopiló la VEP, nivel de educación y una puntuación total de la función cognitiva (PTFC). Se usaron análisis de correlación y regresión múltiple utilizando VEP como variable criterio y el consumo de oxígeno (VO2), tasa de intercambio respiratorio (RER), PTFC y nivel de educación como predictores. Resultados. Se encontró una correlación significativa entre la VEP y la RER (r = 0.22, p = 0.029) en el esfuerzo máximo. Los predictores de VEP para las mujeres fueron VO2, RER y PTFC en diferentes etapas de la prueba. Para los hombres, la VEP fue predicha por RER, nivel de educación y VO2 en diferentes etapas. Conclusión. Las variables metabólicas y fisiológicas predijeron los valores de VEP en adultos mayores. La edad, la cognición y la FC no se relacionaron con la VEP en el esfuerzo máximo y la RER predijo las puntuaciones de la VEP durante el esfuerzo submáximo y máximo.

Abstract

La agricultura de bajo impacto ambiental demanda nuevos pesticidas que deben ajustarse a las exigentes normativas internacionales. Parte de la búsqueda de nuevos productos bio-racionales se desarrolla por fuera del marco de la síntesis orgánica, explorando diferentes sustancias de origen natural como extractos vegetales, aceites insecticidas e insecticidas inorgánicos. Los polvos insecticidas representan el grupo más antiguo de sustancias utilizadas por el hombre para el control de plagas, cuya eficacia se basa principalmente en fenómenos físicos. Con el advenimiento de los insecticidas de síntesis, los polvos insecticidas fueron relegados por casi cinco décadas a la función de carriers de principios activos dentro de los insecticidas formulados. Con el desarrollo del caolín hidrófobo en la década de los 90´, los polvos inorgánicos resurgieron como insecticidas "per se", y, recientemente, a partir del descubrimiento de los nanoinsecticidas, afloran nuevas alternativas para expandir el espectro de aplicaciones de los polvos inorgánicos. El desarrollo y registro de nuevos productos a partir de nanomateriales manufacturados se basa en el paradigma "lo mismo pero diferente", ya que éstos difieren de las sustancias con idéntica estructura y composición química respecto de algunas propiedades como reactividad,área especifica, efectos cuánticos, carga eléctrica, etc. Estas sustancias con nuevas propiedades también se destacan como herramientas muy prometedoras para la protección de cultivos y la producción de alimentos y abren nuevas fronteras para el manejo de plagas con nanoinsecticidas. La alúmina nanoestructurada exhibe varias de las propiedades del insecticida ideal, ya que se trata de un producto natural desde el punto de vista químico, no reactivo, económico, con reducidas probabilidades de provocar resistencia en los insectos y su eficacia es mayor que la de otros polvos insecticidas como el caolín o la tierra de diatomeas. La masiva aparición de productos a base de nanomateriales en el mercado ha superado la velocidad a la que se evalúa su potencial impacto, de modo que la aplicación avanza por delante de la regulación para su uso. Esto sugiere la urgente necesidad de investigar los potenciales riesgos que surgen del empleo de estos productos en general, de los nanoinsecticidas en particular y sus efectos sobre organismos no blancos, así como sobre las nuevas tecnologías de aplicación más seguras y eficientes. Los actuales niveles de aplicación de nanopartículas y los desarrollos por venir, sugieren que la nanotecnología tendrá un efecto directo sobre las tendencias de la evolución de la agricultura para el control de plagas.Sustainable agriculture demands new environmentally friendly pesticides that adhere to strict international regulations. Part of the research on new biorational pesticides focuses on natural products such as plant extracts, oils, and inorganic insecticides. Insecticidal dusts represent the oldest group of substances used by men for pest management, and their efficacy is based on physical phenomena. With the advent of synthetic pesticides, insecticidal dusts were used as carriers for other active ingredients in formulated insecticides. Organic dusts made a come-back as insecticides with the discovery of hidrophobic kaolin in the 90's. Recently, the discovery of nanoinsecticides brings new alternatives to expand the spectrum of applications of inorganic dusts. Development and registry of nanomaterials is based on the idea that they are not new materials, although they have different properties than the products with the same chemical structure, given that novel properties emerge from products when they are at the nanoscale. For example, reactivity, specific area, electric charge and quantum effects may differ. These substances with new properties are promising as tools for crop protection and food production, opening new frontiers for nanoinsecticides in pest management. For example, nanostructured alumina has been shown to have insecticidal properties, and it possesses some of the characteristics of an ideal insecticide, given that it is a natural product, not reactive, economical, with reduced probabilities of generating resistance in insects, and it is more effective than other commercially available insecticidal dusts. The current use of nanotechnology in a wide array of fields and products as well as the recent discovery of their potential in crop protection suggests that nanomaterials have a great potential for development of new products that will impact agriculture. Given the recent and widespread use of nanomaterials, there is an urgent need to study the impact of these products on human health and non target organisms, as well as to research more efficient and safer delivery technologies. The current levels of application of nanoparticles and the expected developments to come, suggest that nanotechnology will have a direct impact on the evolution of pest management practices in agriculture.

Este artículo estima el grado y naturaleza de las imperfecciones en los mercados de madera del Pacifico Sur colombiano. Los mercados son descritos bajo el paradigma de la organización industrial (estructura/conducta/desempeño). El artículo también incluye un modelo econométrico que estima el grado de la imperfección. Las estructuras de los mercados indicaron altos niveles de concentración de los vendedores. Estos niveles de concentración son el resultado de la presencia de barreras para entrar en el mercado, las cuales son asociadas con falta de acceso a información y capital, deficiencias en el sistema bancario, integración vertical de los participantes, disponibilidad de transporte, y algunas restricciones institucionales. Las imperfecciones de los mercados de maderas crean desigualdades en la distribución del ingreso, desempleo, y pobreza regional. Como consecuencia la contribución de la industria maderera en el progreso socioeconómico es limitada y produce impactos negativos en la conservación de los ecosistemas forestales.

Abstract

This article reflects on the development of Computer Assisted Qualitative Data Analysis Software (CAQDAS) briefly before describing how the software can be harnessed to aid the process of research. It shows how data from a multi-user project looking at governance in UK Foundation Trust hospitals was enhanced and made clearer through the application of a specific method of gathering and coding data using a qualitative data analysis software package: Applying searches based on word frequency counts within NVivo 8 provided an initial categorisation of topics in an efficient manner allowing for a targeted examination of the overall data. Abstract

This paper explores the analysis of complex multi-media data that highlights the latest advances in the kinds of data that can be analyzed using qualitative analytic software. The data examined consists of multiple simultaneous video streams with different video and audio content. The researchers found that multiple simultaneous transcripts can be useful in making sense of the very fast-moving content of these complex media files. The data capture and analysis techniques described provide the researcher with a tremendous level of access to a huge amount of simultaneous data, but the authors suggest that researchers in the analytic environment described are able to function well in the task of managing, understanding, and analyzing very complex data that captures very complex occurrences in the real world. Abstract

For the KWALON 2010 conference, several software representatives were given a common data set consisting of text and media files about the financial crisis of 2008 – 2009. This paper focuses on the process of analyzing the media files in this data set using Transana, a software package designed for the transcription and qualitative analysis of video and audio data. The authors describe several styles of transcription used in the process of making sense of the data, the selection and coding of analytically interesting segments of the media files, and working with coded data to develop a coherent narrative from this data. They also describe their collaborative process, as facilitated by the software, and how that affected the analysis of the data. Finally, the authors describe the results of their analysis in terms of the multi-layered narrative of the data, and discuss the limitations of that analysis. Abstract: The study of “Money and Sexuality in Martin Amis’ Money A Suicide Note 1984” has permitted to demonstrate that even if money is useful, it can create the disappearance of moral values. In that it becomes an opportunity for wealthy people to devalue female sex. Focusing on Marxist theory, the research sorts out the consuming society created by money in Amis’ Money. Given that money gives the impression that everything can be achieved through it so that John Self generates a world of opulence in which money offers an ease access to sex in order to show his domination on other people. But through the character Selina, women have figured out that money does not mean a key that opens the door of sexuality and there are values such as love, living together and peace which characterize female gender. We have to note down that wealth does not refer to the destruction moral values and the sacredness of female sex but a way to implement culture and valorise female gender. Abstract

Karateka women may be characterized as masculine when viewed from the traditional martial culture and stereotyped and sexualized within the sports culture. These characterizations are gender binary organized. Women are in an arena assumed to be hegemonically masculine, with the male gaze guiding their performance as athletes and dictating expectations for their performativity as women. We carried out a study with the Spanish women's karate squad in preparation for the Tokyo Olympic Games, aiming to analyze how the hegemonic sports culture affects karateka women's embodied subjectivities through the diktats of the male gaze. The data generated with athletes and coaches, mainly through interviews carried out twice with each of them, informed processes of objectification and consumption of women in sport. Their athletic performance is devalued while, contradictorily, there is an apparent valuation of them through the sensualisation and sexualisation of their bodies. It is not valuation, though, since it keeps just favoring a desirous male gaze that, due to hegemony, addresses women as others. At times, athletes get lost in criticisms of one another, as data reported, but they are brave in being there, facing oppression daily, and becoming stronger. They often develop reflexivity and criticality of their situation, but it is not an easy task to be carried out alone. So, a community of practice among women is welcome as much as having the support of conscious men, those with greater understanding capacity, as they are internal to male culture.

Abstract

Los teléfonos móviles inteligentes o smartphones pueden ser una fuente de gran disrupción en las salas de clases, ya que tienen el potencial de reducir la atención que los estudiantes prestan a sus profesores y, por lo tanto, pueden ser perjudiciales para el aprendizaje. Diversas investigaciones conducidas en Estados Unidos y el Reino Unido parecen confirmar que existe una asociación entre el uso del smartphone y el rendimiento académico de los escolares, aunque otros aseguran que el tamaño del efecto es pequeño y que habría que indagar más en las características personales de los usuarios. Para determinar si existe una relación entre el rendimiento académico de los escolares chilenos de 10 a 18 años y el uso del teléfono inteligente, se aplicó un enfoque cualitativo-cuantitativo a través de focus groups y encuestas cara a cara. Se observó que había tres variables significativas: edad a la que se recibió el primer celular, intensidad de uso diario del teléfono celular y grupo socioeconómico. No resultaron significativas ni el género ni el uso del teléfono inteligente dentro de la sala de clases. Los datos obtenidos con nuestras encuestas parecen confirmar que hay una relación entre la cantidad de horas que pasa un niño o joven con el teléfono y su promedio de notas, así como entre la edad en que los niños empiezan a usar el teléfono inteligente y su promedio de notas. En consecuencia, se puede afirmar que a mayor tiempo de uso del teléfono inteligente, peor rendimiento académico.

26. Factibilidad de generacion de electricidad mediante gasificacion de residuos de aserradero en el norte de Mexico

Abstract

Se evaluó la factibilidad de generar energía eléctrica a partir del uso de residuos del aserrío mediante la tecnología de gasificación en dos aserraderos ejidales, Rocheachi (RO) y Tatahuichi (TA), en el municipio de Guachochi, Chihuahua. El área se ubica en un clima semifrío, con medias anuales de temperatura y precipitación de 10,6 [grados]C y 800 mm, respectivamente; la vegetación está constituida por bosque de pino y pino-encino; las especies maderables son principalmente Pinus arizonica y P. durangensis. Se caracterizó el flujo de residuos, su composición química y su valor energético. Se seleccionó la tecnología de gasificación de cama fija con flujo hacia abajo con costos y especificaciones de un proveedor chino. Se asumió una conversión bioenergética de 1,3 kgMS/kWh y un factor de planta de 80%; el uso total de la electricidad sería alumbrado público municipal al 80% del costo de la tarifa normal. Se evaluó la viabilidad financiera de sistemas con capacidades a (100, 200, 400 y 800) kW bajo tres escenarios: base, optimista y pesimista. Se valoró el efecto de ingresos adicionales por venta de bonos de carbono en el mercado voluntario a (4, 5 y 6) US$/tC[O.sub.2]. La tasa interna de retorno (TIR) se incrementó consistentemente con la capacidad del sistema; el sistema a 800kW tuvo la mejor perspectiva económica. Los resultados fueron negativos y positivos en todos los escenarios para las capacidades de 100 kW y 800 kW, respectivamente. Sin bonos de carbono, la rentabilidad privada solo resulta aceptable (13%) en el sistema a 800kW en un escenario optimista. El impacto de los bonos se reflejó en incrementos en la TIR de 1,1 a 1,6% en el sistema de 400 kW y de 2,3 a 2,9% en el de 800 kW. Bajo estas condiciones, los sistemas evaluados reunirían los requisitos de adicionalidad que demanda el mercado del carbono. The feasibility of converting sawmill residues in electricity through gasification was evaluated in two ejido sawmills, Rocheachi and Tatahuichi, in the Guachochi municipality of Chihuahua State. The area has a semi cold climate, with temperature and precipitation annual means of 10,6 [degrees]C and 800 mm, respectively; the tree cover is dominated by pine and pine-oak communities with Pinus arizonica and P. duranguensis being the main species used for logging. The residues flow was estimated and its chemical composition and heating value characterized. The selected technology was the fixed bed downdraft gasifier; the costs and specifications data were provided by a Chinese supplier. The main assumptions were: 1,3 kgDM/kwh, 80% plant factor, electricity output sold for street lighting at 80% of commercial price. The financial viability was evaluated through the configuration of (100, 200, 400 and 800) kw systems and three scenarios: base, optimistic and pessimistic. The effect of additional revenues from carbon credits sold at the voluntary market at 4, 5 and 6 US$/tC[O.sub.2] was assessed. The internal rate of return (IRR) increased consistently with increasing the systems' capacity with the 800kw being the most economically attractive. without carbon credits, the 100 kw system showed no positive values at any scenario whereas the 800 kw system was the only one with positive IRR in all the scenarios with a range of 3% to 13%; the additional revenues from carbon credits added 2,3 and 2,9% to the low and high scenarios, respectively. In the context of the study, the systems evaluated would satisfy the additionality criteria required by the carbon market. Abstract

Objetivo: analisar publicações científicas sobre a relevância dos fatores de risco maternos para a predisposição ao desenvolvimento de Retinopatia da Prematuridade (ROP) em recém-nascidos prematuros. Materiais e Métodos: trata-se de uma revisão integrativa da literatura. A pergunta norteadora definida para a investigação foi: “Quais são os fatores de risco maternos associados ao desenvolvimento da retinopatia da prematuridade?”. A busca dos artigos científicos ocorreu através das bases de dados Biblioteca Virtual de Saúde (BVS) e PubMed (U.S. National Library of Medicine), aplicando-se os descritores “Retinopathy of Prematurity” AND “Risk Factors”; e através da base Scientific Electronic Library Online (Scielo) aplicando-se “Retinopathy of Prematurity” AND “Risk”. Resultados: parte dos artigos (n=5) foi publicada em 2021. Os estudos foram realizados no continente asiático (n= 6), América do Norte (n=2), Europa (n=1) e África (n=1). Todas as pesquisas ocorreram em ambiente hospitalar, tendo em comum a abordagem de fatores relacionados aos recém-nascidos, mas também de fatores maternos, que consiste no foco deste estudo de revisão. Em relação aos fatores de risco maternos, houve destaque da correlação entre comorbidades das mães e o desenvolvimento de ROP, mas também foram abordados fatores nutricionais e sociodemográficos. Conclusão: as características, complicações, comorbidades e alterações ligadas ao feto/lactente, especialmente, baixo peso ao nascer e menor idade gestacional parecem ser mais relevantes para a ocorrência de ROP do que fatores associados à mãe.

Abstract

This essay addresses a critical epistemology of mathematics as an investigation into the epistemic limitations of mathematical thinking. After arguing for the relevance of a critical epistemology of mathematics, I discuss assumptions underlying standard arithmetic and assumptions underlying standard logic as examples for such epistemic limitations of mathematical thinking. Looking into the work of philosophically inte­res­ted scholars in mathematics education such as Alan Bishop and Ole Skovsmose, I discuss some early insights for a critical epistemology of mathematics. I conclude that these insights can only be the beginning, that we are yet far away from a proper under­standing of the epistemic limitations of mathematics, and that more research is needed.

Abstract

The study sheds light on the problem of communication in the Church and proposes a model of dialogical communication based on data analysis. It must be in harmony with the content of speculative theology, but at the same time it must meet the linguistic needs of the present time. Pope Francis, with the Synod, is channeling many changes in the right direction. Empirical analyses of media coverage of representations of the Catholic Church, provide further support for this theme. On the one hand, we have the press in Slovenia, which is saturated with news about the Church, and on the other hand, we have Radio and Television, which are undernourished. Often, the Church is presented along with celebrities, celebrations, politics and charity work. If we take into consideration the dialogical model of communication, these issues can be entry points for better and more qualitative communication.

Abstract

One-dimensional (string) formal languages and their learning have been studied in considerable depth. However, the knowledge of their two-dimensional (picture) counterpart, which retains similar importance, is lacking. We investigate the problem of learning formal two-dimensional picture languages by applying learning methods for one-dimensional (string) languages. We formalize the transcription process from a two-dimensional input picture into a string and propose a few adaptations to it. These proposals are then tested in a series of experiments, and their outcomes are compared. Finally, these methods are applied to a practical problem and an automaton for recognizing a part of the MNIST dataset is learned. The obtained results show improvements in the topic and the potential to use the learning of automata in fitting problems.

Abstract

Antecedentes: La cirrosis hepática es una causa importante de morbilidad y mortalidad en el mundo. En México, constituye una las primeras seis causas de muerte. Objetivo: Analizar los datos epidemiológicos derivados del estudio de Global Burden of Disease y su relación con los factores de riesgo asociados al desarrollo de hepatopatías crónicas en México. Material y meÌÂÂÂtodos: Se realizó el análisis de datos provenientes del Instituto para la Medición y Evaluación de la Salud y del Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Geografía. Resultados: La cirrosis hepática tiene una prevalencia alta en México, con una carga de enfermedad importante traducida en años perdidos de vida saludable, por muerte prematura y por discapacidad. La mortalidad por cirrosis ocupó el sexto lugar (3.6 %) en 2021 y fue la octava causa de años de vida saludable perdidos (2.8 %). De 1990 a 2021, la tasa de mortalidad se incrementó de 26.7 a 34.2 por 100 000 habitantes. Conclusiones: La carga de enfermedad por cirrosis hepática se continúa derivando del consumo de alcohol y de la hepatitis C; la prevalencia de la cirrosis causada por enfermedad hepática esteatósica se ha incrementado en la última década. Existen cambios epidemiológicos en la frecuencia y carga de la hepatopatía crónica que muestra variaciones territoriales en México.

Abstract

The once iconic centerpieces of our urban cores are being forgotten amidst the shadows of new construction, calling the life and death cycle of these landmark buildings into question. If a modernising city wishes to densify their land-poor cities they must look up and consider the air above existing buildings as buildable space. By reconsidering the untouched nostalgia inherent in our traditional notions of preservation, designers must challenge the use of airspace above landmark historic buildings. As culture, society, and our environment continually evolve, how do we preserve history while also bringing it into the future? This question can be answered by making contextually conscious use of valuable air space above historic buildings and is exemplified in a in a design research prototype for the 1904 Grand Manse in the state of Nebraska, USA, that applies architectural research methods while negotiating local zoning code in accordance with the demands of a growing city.

Este trabajo distingue entre tres tipos de experiencia psicológica: deseos que son estimulados por el placer; emociones como la cólera, la gratitud, la vergüenza y también el miedo, que implican valoraciones, ya sean pragmáticas o éticas; y abatimiento o athumia, que es inducida por una sensación de impotencia y aporía. La primera de ellas se rige por el autocontrol, enkrateia o sôphrosunê, como la virtud correspondiente. Las emociones están sujetas a un mecanismo psíquico diferente, que implica una evaluación adecuada de las condiciones que las provocan. Finalmente, el desaliento o athumia constituye otra categoría más, como un estado de pasividad, de pérdida de agencia.

Abstract

Background: Large animals treated with immunosuppressive drugs for preclinical experiments of transplantation have increased risks of infection, which can be compounded by the induction of diabetes if islet transplantation is planned. Methods: We report our experience with severe sepsis in two young cynomolgus monkeys and five pigs that were subjected to diabetes induction, immunosuppressive therapy, or islet allotransplantation. Results: In two monkeys and five pigs, infection was associated with a syndrome of profound hypoglycemia accompanied by severe acidosis, which was resistant to treatment. We do not believe that this syndrome has been reported previously by others. Conclusions: Despite treatment, this syndrome complicated the interpretation of blood glucose readings as a measure of islet graft function and resulted in death or the need for euthanasia in all seven animals. We tentatively suggest that the syndrome may be related to the presence of microorganisms that metabolize glucose and produce lactate.
