In response to the epidemic of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in the Caribbean, the Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) issued the 2007 Port-of-Spain Declaration, “Uniting to Stop the Epidemic of Chronic Non-communicable Diseases” and declared the second Saturday in September to be “Caribbean Wellness Day” (CWD). CWD is a call-to-action for engaging the population of the Member States in confronting NCDs and their risk factors. This report reviews the genesis, implementation, and institutionalization of CWD in CARICOM and beyond. The study used quantitative and qualitative methods, including 29 surveys, 7 in-depth interviews, and analysis of media content. Data was provided by NCD focal points at the Ministry of Health in 15 CARICOM countries, as well as by 7 non-governmental and 4 private organizations. Branding materials were well received and locally adapted; much of CWD media content originated from organization websites and were not community-based. Events typically focused on physical activity and health screenings and were attended by up to 3 000 participants. Though most were held in city centers, some CWD activities have involved rural and indigenous populations. CWD has become a catalyst for multisectoral engagement and health promotion activities. Inspired by CWD, PAHO initiated “Wellness Week in the Americas,” which includes CWD and promotes its tenets across the Region of the Americas. As CWD further develops, consideration should be given to reliable, adequate, and sustainable financing; to measuring and evaluating its impact on NCDs; and to widening its reach to include those outside of city centers.

Abstract Pineapple is one of the most important fruits, with large production in tropical and subtropical regions and great appreciation by consumers all over the world. The pineapple plant has many specific morphological, anatomical and physiological characteristics that determine crucial aspects of pineapple crop management, such as flower induction, water use and vegetative methods of propagation. The use of sexual reproduction of pineapple is restricted to breeding purposes carried out by research institutes looking for new hybrids with improved agronomic characteristics. Seeds are only produced if cross pollination among varieties occurs. Commercially pineapple has to be propagated by vegetative material, an asexual reproduction, without new combinations of genes. Some types of propagules are naturally produced by the plants and called conventional planting material. Its availability and quality depend on many factors, especially cultivar and environment. Management techniques of this material have been continuously developed and will be addressed. In addition to the conventional planting material, which in many situations is not sufficient to assure expansion or at least maintenance of the cultivated area, several other methods of vegetative propagation of pineapple have been studied and made available along the last decades and will also be discussed, involving techniques of stem sectioning, apical growing point gouging and chemical treatment for transformation of flowers into plantlets. Stem sectioning has been especially interesting, as it is mostly done using plant residues available at low cost, and is a rather simple method suited for multiplication and production of disease-free planting material in nurseries. Gouging and chemical treatment are less practiced, but can be applied in ratoon crops, thereby avoiding the loss of the first cycle fruit. Chemical treatment usually results in rather small plantlets, that must be further grown in nurseries before planting them in the field. And finally micropropagation will also be focused, as in vitro production of plantlets is a very important method of multiplication of new pineapple varieties, but this method yet has not been transformed into a common commercial way of pineapple propagation due to the final high cost and to the still high risks of incidence of somaclonal variations among the plantlets produced.

This article brings together contemporaries James Joyce and Fernando Pessoa in articulating the idea of mythologising the exiled self. There are interesting points of convergence between Joyce and Pessoa which are very fruitful to delving deeper into the works of both authors and reading them anew to open up fresh perspectives and horizons. Pessoa most likely only scanned quickly though Ulysses and read little else of Joyce; and Joyce probably never even heard of Pessoa. Nevertheless, Pessoa's small critical synopsis of Ulysses with the fascinating descriptions of it as a "literatura de antemanhã" and "sintoma de intermédio" are worthy of attention. I focus on three themes in mythologizing the exiled self: first, that of the peripheral landscape via motifs of defeat, homelessness, language, and the sea; second the expression of plurality of the subject rather than "death of the subject"; and third, the creation of the "nightbook," giving the exiled self a way to see in the dark, the freedom to dream infinitely, and to embrace the life of repetition that is the passport to eternity during the one of the darkest chapters in twentieth century history.
