Stag beetles, or Lucanidae (Insecta: Coleoptera: Scarabaeoidea), are among the most charismatic groups of scarab beetles. However, their ecology and natural history are largely unknown, partly due to their rarity in the field and in biological collections. This contribution summarizes the status of knowledge of the Colombian Lucanidae, based for the most part in bibliographic research and personal observations from fieldwork and biological collections in Colombia and Brazil. Bibliographic records are supplemented by data from the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF), including field obser-vations recorded through the online platform iNaturalist. In the literature, we found 19 species of stag beetles recorded for Colombia, belonging to five genera, three tribes, and two subfamilies. Bibliographic records are concentrated in the Andean region of Colombia, with some records in the Caribbean and Pacific regions. The lowlands of the Amazon and Orinoco regions lack any records for lucanid beetles. The diversity and ecology of stag beetles in Colombia are discussed in the light of current environmental threats. By presenting diagnoses and an identification key to the lucanid genera present in the country, along with known distributional data, and a discussion about their ecology, this contribution constitutes the first step towards proposing Colombian lucanids as species in need of conservation efforts.

Dung beetles are considered a useful taxon to describe and to monitor spatial and temporal patterns of biodiversity. Tropical communities of dung beetles are usually diverse, abundant, and habitat specific; they respond quickly to many types of environmental changes. This study was carried out over 18 months, on an altitudinal gradient in the Oglán Alto watershed, located in Pastaza Province, Ecuador. A total of 10,227 individuals belonging to 59 species were collected. Food preference was analyzed and it was observed that species of coprophagous beetles are superior to necrophagous and generalists species. Tunnelers functional group was more abundant than rollers and dwellers groups, and only this group reduced its richness at higher altitudes. Six richness estimators were used for comparison between the two types of bait used (excrement and carrion). Correspondence Analysis was performed, according to the types of traps and species captured, with respect to the variation of altitudinal gradient. We concluded that the relation of altitudinal gradient and average of richness by traps is very similar among four transects sampled, showing a mixture of species of copro-necrophagous beetles associated to Amazon lowlands, with few species of foothill evergreen forest of the Ecuadorian east. It is recommended to continue studies in this type of vegetation, mainly in a higher altitudinal gradient.

Dung beetles can influence seedling emergence and survival. However, the direction and magnitude of this effect will depend on the functional traits of the dung beetle community and on the prevailing environmental conditions. We studied the role of dung beetles in seed dispersal of Prosopis flexuosa DC. in an arid environment. We conducted an experimental study to assess how different dung beetle species differ in their effectiveness as secondary seed dispersers. To evaluate this question, we selected four species belonging to three functional groups: lifters, tunnelers, and rollers. Dung beetles removed 0.7%-7.5% of the seeds embedded in cow dung. The net effect of beetles on seedling emergence and survival varied markedly among species: Malagoniella puncticollis (roller) had neutral effects on seedling emergence and positive in their survival. Sulcophanaeus imperator, Digitonthophagus gazella (tunneler) and Eucranium arachnoides (lifters) species had positive effect on seedling emergence. However, the effect of S. imperator on seedling survival was negative, and those of D. gazella and E. arachnoides, neutral. Our results indicate that although dung beetles remove few seeds of P. flexuosa, their main role consisted in producing changes in micro-environmental conditions for the seeds that remained in the dung pile. Llista patró d'escarabats terrestres (Arthropoda, Insecta, Coleoptera) associada a agroecosistemes al nord-oest del Marroc Els escarabats exerceixen un paper important en els agrosistemes com a bioindicadors de qualitat, ecologia, conservació i característiques del sòl. Els coleòpters dels agrosistemes del Marroc encara no estan ben estudiats. Per omplir aquest buit, i per tal de contribuir al coneixement dels escarabats (Coleoptera), es va estudiar una regió del nord-oest del Marroc entre 2019 i 2020. L'inventari es va fer utilitzant diferents classes de paranys. A la regió es van registrar un total de 54 espècies, dividides en 14 famílies pertanyents a 20 subfamílies i 18 tribus. En aquest estudi, Carabidae va ser la família més abundant, amb 24 espècies, i Harpalinae la subfamília més dominant, amb 19 espècies. Aquest treball proporciona la primera llista patró de la fauna de coleòpters associada als agrosistemes del nord-oest del Marroc. S'inclou una clau d'identificació de la subfamília i la tribu, així com informació actualitzada sobre la distribució de les espècies. També se n'indica la distribució al Marroc. The diversity of the family Mycetophagidae (Coleoptera) is summarized for Peru. Two genera are recorded (Litargus Erichson and Thrimolus Casey). Comments are given on classification and distribution of the family, as well as known biology and natural history.

A one-page quick guide written by Lauren M. Diepenbrock and Jamie D. Burrow and published by the Entomology and Nematology Department presents the life cycle of the ambrosia beetle and provides several photos of the pest and the damage it causes to assist in identification.

Three beetle families, Sphindidae Jacquelin du Val, Corylophidae LeConte and Latridiidae Erichson, are documented as part of the “Beetles of Peru” project. The checklists are based on fieldwork in Peru, museum specimens, and published literature. Three sphindid genera are indicated as new country records.

Abstract The biology and ecology of wedge-shaped beetles (Coleoptera: Ripiphoridae) are scarcely known in the Neotropical realm. Chilean species of this beetle family are currently represented by two genera: MacrosiagonHentz, 1830 and RipiphorusBosc, 1791, and three species, only known from their type localities. Here, we present an updated catalog of Chilean Ripiphoridae, along with the new distributional and biology records. Also, Macrosiagon flavipennisLeConte, 1866 (Ripiphorinae: Macrosiagonini) has been reported for the first time in Chile. We discuss the reasons for the presence of M. flavipennis in urban areas, the state of knowledge of the endemic species presents in Chile in relation to their distribution and the opportunity to use opportunistic records to better understand their natural history.

Silvopastoral systems (SPS) represent an alternative to the environmental impact and biodiversity de-cline caused by extensive livestock practices. We evaluate the transformation of a conventional pasture parcel into a SPS, and how it alters the diversity of dung beetles, fundamental organisms in these ecosystems. Transects with pitfall traps, baited with excrement were established in SPS, pasture, and forest ecosystems. Differences in the structure of communities were compared through Whittaker cur-ves, the incidence of functional groups, and non-parametric multidimensional scaling. The complete-ness of the sampling was estimated and the magnitude of change in qD diversity of the SPS concerning pasture and forest ecosystem was calculated for each season. A total of 7446 beetles belonging to twelve genera, fifteen species, and seven morphospecies were collected. The SPS was the environment with the greatest diversity of qD and functional groups after the forest ecosystem. It was more diverse than pasture, 30 % to 50 % richer in species and 10 % to 50 % more diverse in 1D and 2D. It is concluded that the conversion of the conventional pastures to SPS led to changes in the composition and structure of the beetle community, making the SPS a more diverse environment than the pasture in all seasons including the dry one, when conditions are the most adverse. These results suggest that the implemen-tation of SPS is an important measure to preserve and increase the diversity of forest dung beetles in the livestock areas of the country.

The diversity of the family Pythidae (Coleoptera) is summarized for Peru. One genus (Ischyomius Chevrolat) and two species are recorded. Comments are given on classification and distribution of the family, as well as known biology and natural history, the latter based primarily on larval stages. Based on label data from previously examined specimens and from newly collected material, species of Ischyomius appear to be closely associated with several monocot plant families within order Zingerberales. Ischyomius singularis Chevrolat is recorded from Huánuco and Lima, while I. bicolor Champion is known from Loreto and Madre de Dios; specific collection localities are given.

The purpose of this study is to analyse the loss of physical-mechanical properties of pine wood from old buildings (100 to 200 years old) deteriorated by wood boring beetle (Anobium punctatum, De Geer) and aims to contribute to the safety assessment of structural elements in buildings. The effect of degradation can be considered by assuming the reduction of cross-section properties in case of Anobium punctatum degradation, since the galleries formed within the wood are usually surrounded by a considerable amount of sound wood. In this study, a new methodology was developed for qualitative estimation of degradation levels, which was promising. They were then correlated with results of compression tests parallel to the fibers in specimens with 30×30×90 mm: compressive strength, modulus of elasticity and plastic extension. It has been found that, even at relatively important levels of degradation, the loss of properties is small to moderate.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to elaborate supporting tools for the correct identification of Scarabaeidae, by an identification key of genera, and a commented list of the species present in Brazilian pastures. A data survey was performed on the specimens deposited in the main Brazilian collection and reported on the recent scientific literature. The distribution of the species was identified in the Brazilian states, based on information on feeding preference, ecological aspects, and potential for faeces removal action. The species were classified according to their importance for pastures, as: high, medium, and low. A key for the identification of the genera and subgenera of Scarabeidae present in the pastures was constructed through the analysis of the external morphology of the species and, when needed, by the analysis of sexual traits. Twenty genera and 76 species of scarab beetles were recorded for Brazilian pasturelands, among which Dichotomius bos, Dichotomius nisus, Trichillum externepunctatum, Ontherus appendiculatus, Onthophagus aff. hirculus, and Digitonthophagus sp. were considered as the most frequent, widely distributed, abundant, and important. The dichotomous key will contribute to the identification of the genera and subgenera of dung beetles (Scarabaeidae: Scarabaeinae) occurring in the Brazilian pastures.

A checklist of the eucnemid beetles of Peru is presented, based on a literature survey and identification of specimens from two museums. The Peruvian fauna comprises ~107 species in 30 genera from eight tribes and three subfamilies. Nine genera are newly recorded for Peru. They include: Xylophilus Mannerheim 1823, Temnillus Bonvouloir 1871, Gastraulacus Guérin-Méneville 1843, Somahenecus Cobos 1964, Silveriola Cobos 1956, Onichodon Newman 1838, Cladus Bonvouloir 1872, Thambus Bonvouloir 1871 and Neomathion Fleutiaux 1930. Fifty-eight species are newly recorded for Peru. A familial diagnosis as well as notes on eucnemid habitat, collecting methods, and biology are provided. This contribution is part of the ‘Beetles of Peru’ project.

Flea beetles are in the largest subfamily (Alticinae) of the family Chrysomelidae, or leaf beetles (Furth 1988). The name Altica is derived from the Greek word haltikos, which translates to good jumper. Although this group of insects are named flea beetles, this is not because the form of the body resembles fleas, but rather because they have strong hind legs allowing them to jump long distances like true fleas (Siphonaptera). Their great jumping skills are thought to have evolved as a mechanism to escape from predators. The diversity of the beetle family Monotomidae is summarized for the country of Peru. One subfamily, three tribes, three genera, and four species are recorded. This paper presents the first record of this family in Peru, as part of the 'Beetles of Peru' project. Diagnostic characters for the family are given. This is only a preliminary checklist; Many specimens were not identifiable past genus with current literature. The diversity of Monotomidae will expand considerably with additional surveys and sampling work within the country.

Diversitat de coleòpters associats a cultius de síndria Citrullus lanatus (Thunb.) Mats. a la regió de Ouargla (sud d’Algèria) S’ha estudiat la diversitat de families de coleòpters en camps de síndria al palmeral de Zaatote a Ouargla (34º 54′ N, 5º 20′ E). El mètode de mostreig aplicat va ser amb pots de Barber que van permetre el major nombre de captures d’insectes, tant en individus com en espècies. Durant els tres anys d’estudi (2016, 2017 i 2018), es van identificar 787 individus pertanyents a 12 famílies taxonòmiques. Durant tot el període de mostreig, la família Coccinellidae va ser clarament dominant amb Fc = 35,02 % el 2016, 36,2 % el 2017 i 34,34 % el 2018. En segona posició, la família Tenebrionidae amb el Fc = 26,35 % el 2016, el 30,04 % el 2017 i 33,33 % el 2018. La resta de famílies estaven molt poc representades. En 2016, en funció del seu trofisme, 18 espècies de coleópters (30,91 %) eren fitòfagues i s’alimentaven dels cultius de sindria, mentre que 26 espècies eren depredadores i descomponedores auxiliars. This guide aims to assist in the accurate identification of a highly damaging pest, the coffee berry borer Hypothenemus hampei. Key morphological characters are noted which may distinguish it from similar species found in coffee berries and coffee berry borer traps. Similar genera are also distinguished, though the guide does not provide identification of these genera to species. Useful to both professionals and non-professionals, the guide provides a glossary of anatomical terms used as well as annotated figures of specimens. It is hoped that increased accuracy in identification of coffee berry borer will assist in efforts to limit the spread of the beetle in coffee growing regions around the world.

The family Carabidae is of particular interest not only due to its great specific diversity but also due to the geophilic nature of many of its members, which makes them good bioindicators of soil characteristics. The diversity of the epigean Carabidae is relatively well studied. However, there are no robust data on the presence of these beetles in hypogean habitats of non–karstic substrate and, therefore, without the development of caves. In the present study, we sampled the mesovoid shallow substratum (MSS) at various sites in the Sierra de Guadarrama National Park, with the aim of characterising the Carabidae hypogean fauna. Among many other organisms, we collected 12 species of Carabidae. Of these, despite being known from epigean/edaphic habitats, Leistus (Leistus) constrictus Schaufuss, 1862, Nebria (Nebria) vuillefroyi Chaudoir, 1866, Trechus (Trechus) schaufussi pandellei Putzeys, 1870, and Laemostenus (Eucryptotrichus) pinicola (Graells, 1851) are consistently reported from MSS habitats, albeit with certain differences as regards their occupation of subterranean spaces. The species from forest–dwelling (thermophilous) lineages, T. (T.) schaufussi pandellei and L. (E.) pinicola, presented a higher prevalence in subsoil cavities at lower altitudes, whereas those from orobiont (psychrophilic) lineages, L. (L.) constrictus and N. (N.) vuillefroyi, predominated in subsoils at higher altitudes. As regards the presence of these four species during their different life cycle stages, we found that N. (N.) vuillefroyi was present and abundant as both larval (in the three preimaginal stages) and imago stages, showing the most evident trend towards an hypogean lifestyle. In contrast, for the other three species, only one of the two stages showed a high presence on hypogean habitats. The facultative hypogean capabilities of N. (N.) vuillefroyi and L. (L.) constrictus calls into question the protected status conferred on both species when it was thought that they were exclusively epigean.

We analysed dung beetle communities on ten volcanic islands located around Sicily (Italy) to identify the most probable dispersal routes in the colonization of these islands. Assuming two scenarios, we analysed the dung beetle communities through the coefficient of dispersal direction DD2. Our results suggest that dispersal fluxes do not strictly follow the ‘stepping stone’ dynamic. Lipari and Vulcano are the likely core source areas for the north–of–Sicily area. In the Sicily Channel, Linosa appears to have been the main target area with three equivalent fluxes from Tunisia, Sicily, and Malta, while the fauna of Pantelleria resulted from their interchange and proximity to Tunisian fauna. In light of the congruence of our results with the known history of human movements and colonization, we propose a likely human contribution to the genesis of the dung beetle fauna of the circum–Sicilian volcanic islands.

A white light trap was placed in bananas plantations, according to Sisne, 2009 and MINAG, 1985, in the Citric enterprise of Ciego de Ávila during the period between May and July of 2010 with the objective of determining the composition of genus and species of the order Coleoptera family Scarabaeidae associated to the agroecosystem. The species Cyclocephala cubana Chapin, Phyllophaga puberula Duval, and Phyllophaga patruelis Chev. are associated to bananas crops in these areas.

The Oglán Alto Protective Forest has an area of 3100 hectares and is dominated by Amazonian lowland and piedmont forests, which harbor great diversity of fauna and flora. However, such diversity has been poorly studied, especially insects. Here we present an inventory of the dung beetles (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Scarabaeinae) for this locality. A total of 10,627 individuals, belonging to 17 genera and 65 species, were determined during 18 months of collection, in which 11 different sampling methods were used. This research presents and updated checklist and a photographic guide of the main genera and species of dung beetles identified in the study area.

The objective of this work was to compare the species richness, abundance and diversity of Scarabaeidae beetles in two types of habitats (field and forest), and to assess whether their seasonal variation is related to climatic variables. This study was conducted in the São Donato Biological Reserve, Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil (Pampa biome). Beetles were collected using pitfall traps between January 2012 and January 2013. A total of 125 individuals were collected, of which six genera and 11 species from four subfamilies of Scarabaeidae were identified. 54 individuals of five species were collected from the field, and 71 individuals of eight species were collected from the forest. The most abundant species were Ataenius picinus Harold, 1868, Canthon lividus Blanchard, 1845 and Leucothyreus lavipes Eschscholtz, 1822, which together accounted for 86.4% of all individuals captured. The highest total number of individuals was collected in summer (78), and the highest number of species was collected in spring (9). Differences in environmental structure (and associated climate) and food resource availability may be decisive and limiting factors for beetle occurrence in forest versus field areas, as various species were restricted to a specific habitat type or season.

Background. In tropical ecosystems, a great diversity of bark beetles and borers can be recognized, however, this diversity could be underrepresented due to the fact that the studies have been carried out mostly below 2 m in height, which makes it necessary to study them more widely and effectively. Objective. To analyze the vertical distribution of Scolytinae, Platypodinae (Curculionidae) and Bostrichidae at the edge and interior of a tropical forest in Tabasco, Mexico. Methodology. The study was carried out in the high evergreen rainforest of the Sierra el Madrigal in the municipality of Teapa, Tabasco, Mexico. The capture of insects was carried out with flight interception traps baited with 70% ethanol at three different heights: 1.5, 6 and 12 m. Results. The diversity index (1D) showed that the greatest diversity at the edge and interior of the forest is at 1.5 m. However, the traps at the edge located 12 m high captured the greatest richness, and the maximum richness in the interior was recorded at 1.5 m. Stratification of species richness was presented at the edge and interior of the forest. Statistical differences in abundance were found between the evaluated heights: at the edge, these occurred in January, April, October and November; and in the interior, in April. According to the diversity estimation (1D), statistical differences were presented in the months of April and October at the edge of the vegetation, and in the interior in March, April and June. Implications. The results provide a broader picture of the vertical distribution of the insects studied here, which are important in the dynamics of forest ecosystems. Conclusion. The diversity and abundance of insects change over time, and that more detailed studies are lacking to know the degree of variations associated with environmental variables.

We present a preliminary analysis of the diversity of dung beetles in an altitudinal gradient on the East slope of Los Andes, Napo province, Ecuador. We sampled 12 localities within a 2200-m altitudinal gradient (400–2600 m a.s.l.) using pitfall traps with 2 different baits. We registered 2215 individuals distributed within 14 genera and 54 species. Ontherus pubens was the most abundant species, with registers in 10 locations that cover an altitudinal gradient of 2021 m. We also found species associated to low, medium, and high elevation levels, as well as species located on either extreme of the altitudinal gradient. The most abundant genus was Onthophagus, and the most speciose Uroxys. This survey provides 14 new registers for the Napo province and 5 novel registers for Ecuador. We present a detailed list of the species present in the Napo province with their distribution ranges, relocation guilds, and food resource preferences.

The coprophages are a group of individuals of great importance in the ecological dynamism of natural areas given their specific adaptability of the species and their relationship to their distribution since it influences the quality and quantity of the resources they need for their development. In this sense, a study of mangrove coprophages in the dry inter-Andean forest on the grounds of the Universidad Francisco de Paula Santander Ocaña, as a fundamental basis for the in situ conservation of natural areas. For the taxa collection, it was carried out by random sampling within the area, using Pitfall traps made with 16-ounce vessels; inside they contained alcohol and soapy water for the capture and preservation of the species, where the attractant used was decomposing meat and pig manure. The traps were arranged in four sites (M1, M2, M3, and M4), with 15 traps in each of them. In total 824 individuals were registered, distributed in thirteen species, where the abundant corresponds to Canthidium aurifex, Eurysternus scarabaeus and Canthidium sp with 799 (96.96%) toral individuals; while 3.4% (25) of the species with six and one individual correspond to Oryctes nasicornis, Odontotaenius disjunctus, Monochamus sp, Hololepta quadridentata, Calathus fuscipes, Neoathyreus exacavatus, Onthophagus striatulus, Dichotomous sp, Copris lunares, Eurysternus marmoreusIn this way, the differences of two zones are documented, one with acidic to slightly acidic soils and another abundant in phosphates and little organic matter, given that the greater information of coprophages is influenced by environmental variables, in addition this abundance is related to abrupt edges adjacent to agricultural farms, where land tenure has changed the structure and functioning of the landscape typical of anthropic areas.

We studied the fauna of dung beetles associated with sustainable livestock systems in different biogeographic regions of Colombia, with the purpose of determining the local dung fauna associated with the livestock landscape. In this article the data set includes records of dung beetles of the subfamily Scarabaeinae from 18 cattle ranches located in eight departments of Colombia: Atlántico (1), Boyacá (2), Caldas (2), Caquetá (1), Cesar (3), Meta (2), Tolima (3) and Valle del Cauca (4). The database comprises 1618 records taken from 11 255 specimens belonging to 19 genera, 42 species, and 32 morphospecies.

ABSTRACT Our goals were to determine whether the pattern of geographical distribution of dung beetles in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest (BAF), Southeast Brazil, supports the identification of the areas of endemism in this biome, how the number and boundaries of the areas of endemism vary with the spatial scale used in the analysis, if the areas of endemism identified here are consistent with previous proposals described in the literature. We used the analysis of endemicity (NDM) on the distributional patterns of 198 species and subspecies of dung beetles in order to identify areas of endemism into grids of 0.25°x0.25°, 0.5°x0.5° and 1°x1°. A total of 15 consensus areas (CA) were identified with the different grid sizes employed (two of 0.25°, three of 0.5° and 10 of 1°). Our results support the assumptions about the influence of the grid size, since a smaller number of CA were identified for the 0.25° grids (02 CA), whereas by increasing the size of the units, there was an increase in the number of the areas of endemism (10 CA of 1°). Despite different levels of geographical congruence, the areas of endemism located in the BAF described elsewhere are corroborate, all or part of them. The overlap of these CA allowed the definition of three generalized areas of endemism: Southeast, Central and Southwest. These generalized areas encompassed habitats with great environmental variety, potentially influencing the levels of endemism of species of dung beetles. Furthermore, they were corroborated by other areas of endemism described in the literature, allowing us to argue that processes forming these regions have influenced dung beetle species as described for other groups of organisms.

The aim of this paper was to know the composition and structure of water beetles community in different streams along a wide altitudinal gradient (476-4411 m altitude) in Cusco, Peru. For that, 12 sampling stations were established and two collects were carried out during May and July-August 2013 (dry season), in the running water and stony substrate. A total of 3069 individuals were collected between larvae and adults of aquatic beetles, belonging to 23 genera, grouped into 10 families. Elmidae presented the highest richness (13 genera) and abundance (90.4%), being distributed along the whole gradient. The most representative genera by abundance were: Austrelmis, Neoelmis, Heterelmis and Anchytarsus. The Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney and Kruskall-Wallis non-parametric statistical tests for richness, abundance and community structure, clustering analysis (CLUSTER) and similarity analysis (ANOSIM) showed significant differences in the composition of the beetles community along the gradient studied. The percentage similarity analysis (SIMPER) allowed to identify the genera that most influenced the community structure, stand out Neoelmis and Heterelmis in stations located at low and medium altitude, and Austrelmis in stations of higher altitude. A positive correlation of temperature with the richness, diversity and equity, and a negative correlation with these variables altitude was evident.

Este estudio describe la fauna de escarabajos estercoleros (Scarabaeidae: Scarabaeinae) en ranchos ganaderos del trópico subhúmedo. De enero a diciembre de 2010 se recolectaron 93 274 escarabajos estercoleros pertenecientes a 17 especies de la subfamilia Scarabaeinae con trampas de caída libre cebadas con excremento de ganado bovino en 4 ranchos ganaderos del oriente del estado de Yucatán, México. Las especies más abundantes fueron Onthophagus landolti, seguida por Canthon indigaceus chevrolati, Digitonthophagus gazella, C. leechi y Pseudocanthon perplexus. Se observó que las especies cavadoras tuvieron mayor abundancia y riqueza; las diurnas de talla pequeña tuvieron menor riqueza pero fueron más abundantes en todo el estudio. El conocimiento de la composición faunística de escarabajos estercoleros de la región es un punto de partida para desarrollar estudios del impacto de las actividades humanas y las prácticas de producción ganadera sobre la diversidad de estos insectos.This study describes the fauna of dung beetles (Scarabaeidae: Scarabaeinae) in tropical sub-humid cattle ranches. Insects were collected with pitfall traps baited with cattle manure from January to December 2010 in four cattle ranches of eastern state of Yucatán, Mexico. 93 274 dung beetles were collected from 17 species of the subfamily Scarabaeinae. The most abundant species were Onthophagus landolti, followed by Canthon indigaceus chevrolati, Digitonthophagus gazella, C. leechi y Pseudocanthon perplexus. Observations showed that burrowing species had greater abundance and species richness. Diurnal species of small size had lower richness, but were more abundant. Knowledge of the composition of dung beetle fauna of the region is a starting point to develop studies of the impact of human activities and livestock production practices on the diversity of these insects.

In this study we establish the biogeographical affinities of the Scarabaeoidea dung beetle fauna in the dry southeast of the Mexican Plateau and analyze species diversity and how it changes with site, soil and vegetation type. Beetles were systematically captured in 6 windows in the region between Perote, Veracruz and El Seco, Puebla. A total of 9 species and 960 beetles belonging to Scarabaeinae, Aphodiinae and Trogidae were captured. Canthon humectus humectus and Phanaeus quadridens were found in greater abundance in cattle pastures. Trox plicatus is the only species captured in the badlands. The beetle fauna of this landscape is poor owing to a combination of circumstances, mainly the soil, recent volcanic activity and limited food availability. The results obtained are compared with those of 2 other dry landscapes in central Mexico (Metztitlán and Tehuacán). Our landscape shares 50% of its species with Metztitlán and 37.5% with Tehuacán. The species shared between all 3 landscapes are Canthon (B.) puncticollis, Onthophagus lecontei and Labarrus pseudolividus. The fauna was characteristic of the southern Mexican Plateau, but poorer in both the number of species and individuals; some species-expected from a biogeographic perspective-were missing.Establecemos las afinidades biogeográficas de los Scarabaeoidea copronecrófagos del sureste seco del altiplano mexicano, así como la diversidad de especies y sus cambios en diferentes sitios, tipos de vegetación y suelos. Se recolectó en 6 diferentes ventanas entre Perote, Veracruz y El Seco, Puebla, obteniéndose un total de 9 especies y 960 individuos de Scarabaeinae, Aphodiinae y Trogidae. Canthon humectus humectus y Phanaeus quadridens fueron más abundantes en las áreas de pastoreo de ganado. Trox plicatus fue la única especie capturada en la zona de malpaís. En conjunto, la fauna de este paisaje es pobre debido a una combinación de circunstancias, principalmente la naturaleza del suelo, el vulcanismo reciente y la baja disponibilidad de alimento. Se comparan los resultados obtenidos, con los relativos a otros 2 paisajes áridos del centro de México (Metztitlán y Tehuacán). Nuestro paisaje comparte el 50% de las especies con Metztitlán y el 37.5% con Tehuacán. Las especies compartidas entre los 3 son Canthon (B.) puncticollis, Onthophagus lecontei y Labarrus pseudolividus. En síntesis, se encontró una fauna característica del altiplano mexicano sur, pero pobre en cuanto al número de especies e individuos (faltan especies cuya presencia era esperada desde un enfoque biogeográfico).

ABSTRACT Dung beetle species were collected between May 2016 and July 2017 with pitfall traps baited with human feces in four Atlantic Forest sites with different levels of disturbance in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil. We sampled 5,535 individuals belonging to 46 species. Canthidium aff. trinodosum (20.71%), Eurysternus parallelus Castelnau, 1840 (14.82%), Onthophagus catharinensis Paulian, 1936 (12.09%), Scybalocanthon nigriceps (Harold, 1868) (7.61 %), Eurysternus caribaeus (Herbst, 1789) (7.49%), and Canthon rutilans cyanescens Harold, 1868 (7.22%) were the most abundant species, which represented 70% of the individuals sampled. Moreno Fortes Biological Reserve had the higher richness and Morro do Cerrito the higher abundance, while Val Feltrina presented the lowest values. The greatest similarity occurred between Turvo State Park and Moreno Fortes Biological Reserve, while Moreno Fortes Biological Reserve and Val Feltrina had the lowest similarity. Only 11 species (23.9%) occurred in all sites, while 14 species were restricted to only one of the fragments. Both abundance and richness of dung beetles were positively correlated with site temperature but not with precipitation.

Abstract Lycidae are among the better studied groups in the superfamily Elateroidea, however despite the progress in the taxonomic understanding of the Neotropical fauna, much still remains unknown and undescribed in the region. The description of the new genus Xenolycus gen. nov., from Serra dos Órgãos, a subrange of the Serra do Mar mountain range, in the Atlantic Rainforest in Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil, contributes to the knowledge of the Neotropical Lycidae fauna. The new genus can be distinguished from all other known Calopterini and Neotropical Lycidae by the combination of a pronotum with a wide, deep and strongly visible longitudinal cell in the disc area, the filiform antennae, the dehiscent elytra with reticulation strongly reduced and bearing only two weakly developed elytral costae and the mouthparts partially reduced, with rudimentary, barely visible mandibles. The type species, Xenolycus costae sp. nov., is illustrated and diagnostic characters and a discussion on the tribal placement of the new genus are provided.
