The study was conducted with the objective to establish a nutritionally and economically satisfactory management during the suckling phase. Suckling using the traditional amount (1.5 kg milk/day) was compared to suckling according to the energy requirements of the animals (variable amount of milk) calculated by regression based on literature data. Animals receiving the traditional treatment presented a mean weight gain of 0.155 kg/day, which did not differ significantly (P≥0.05) from that of animals receiving a variable amount of milk (mean weight gain of 0.134 kg/day). The average weaning age was 76 days. Animals receiving variable amounts of milk ingested on average 20 kg less milk during the suckling period. Considering the results, the best suckling was obtained when the amount of milk was varied according to the energy requirements of goat kids.

Biologic drugs have been recently used to treat psoriasis. However, some patients do not respond or lose therapeutic benefit with first-line use of tumor necrosis factor (TNF) antagonists. We report a case of psoriasis vulgaris, that failed to respond to TNF antagonists, infliximab and adalimumab, completely disappeared after treatment with ustekinumab, a therapeutic agent for biologically blocking p40 protein of interleukin (IL) 12 and 23. This report highlights anti-TNF agents only inhibited the TNF-α/inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS)-producing dendritic cells (TIP-DCs), but the plasmacytoid-DC-derived psoriatic response was re-initiated. On the other hand, ustekinumab may inhibit both the TIP-DCs and the plasmacytoid-DC-derived inflammatory response.

The objective of this study was to analyse the variations in the metabolic profile of protein, energy enzyme and mineral of Santa Inês ewes with low body condition score (BCS) during peripartum. Blood samples were collected from 12 animals by jugular venipuncture to determine the serum biochemical profiles of protein, energy, mineral and enzyme metabolisms. Samples were collected on the following days: days 28, 21, 14, and 7 before lambing, at birth and, at days 2, 4, 7, 14, 21, and 28 postpartum (dpp). The samples were centrifuged and the serum analysed by Automated-Analyser. There was no alteration of the BCS during the 28 dpp, between 0.6 and 2.1 ± 2.4 ± 0.5, and was considered, as lean. The values of the total serum protein, globulin, albumin, and albumin/globulin ratio were reduced effective from the period before birth until 28dpp. The values of beta-hydroxybutyrate, calcium, phosphorus and magnesium remained below those of reference values. The concentrations of alanin aminotransferase (ALT) were decreased particularly during the weeks before delivery. It was concluded that Santa Inês sheep with low body condition score demonstrated a reduction in the metabolism of proteins, energy, mineral and enzyme during peripartum.

Neutrophilic myositis is an extremely rare condition, cases of which have been reported in association with neutrophilic dermatosis, inflammatory bowel disease and malignant hematological disease. The disorder is histologically characterized by a sterile infiltration of neutrophils throughout muscle, with necrosis of muscle fibres. We here report the case of a young male who also had associated pyoderma gangrenosum, and who presented with necrotizing fasciitis-like manifestations. In this case, although there were no other underlying disorders, compulsive exertional stress due to break-dancing was thought to be a precipitant. Debridement of the necrotic tissues combined with oral corticosteroid treatment was effective.

Com o objetivo de estudar a variação do perfil metabólico protéico, energético, enzimático e mineral em ovelhas da raça Santa Inês com baixo escore de condição corporal no periparto (ECC), foram coletadas amostras de sangue de 12 animais por venopunção jugular para a realização do perfil bioquímico sérico dos metabólitos, protéico, energético, enzimático e mineral no 28, 21, 14 e 7 dias,pré-parto, no dia do parto e aos 2, 4, 7, 14, 21 e 28 dias pós-parto (dpp). As amostras foram centrifugadas e o soro analisado em Analisador automático. O ECC não variou durante os 28 dpp e permaneceu entre 2,1±0,6 e 2,4±0,5 considerado magro. Os valores séricos das proteínas totais, globulina, albumina e relação albumina/globulina mantiveram-se menores desde o período que antecedeu o parto até os 28 dpp. O beta-hidroxibutirato se manteve abaixo dos valores de referência. Os minerais cálcio, fósforo e magnésio mantiveram-se inferiores aos valores de referência. Os valores da alanina aminotransferase (ALT) estavam baixos principalmente nas semanas que antecederam o parto. Concluiu-se que ovelhas Santa Inês com baixo escore de condição corporal apresentam diminuição nos metabolismos protéico, energético, mineral e enzimático no periparto.

Registros de becerros Charolais, proporcionados por la Charolais Herd Book de México y generados en un periodo de ocho años (1997-2005), se analizaron para estimar parámetros genéticos y fenotípicos para peso al nacer (n=39,821), peso al destete ajustado a 205 días (n=39,556) y ganancia posdestete (n=21,831). Estimadores de componentes de (co)varianza se obtuvieron usando Máxima Verosimilitud Restringida con el algoritmo Esperanza-Maximización y modelos animal para una sola característica. Los efectos del ambiente materno permanente no fueron importantes para peso al nacimiento y ganancia posdestete, por lo que no se incluyeron en el modelo final. Los estimadores de heredabilidad directa fueron 0.22, 0.33 y 0.45 para peso al nacimiento, peso al destete ajustado a 205 días y ganancia posdestete, respectivamente. Los estimadores de heredabilidad para el efecto genético materno fueron 0.16, 0.17 y 0.14. Los estimadores de heredabilidad total y de correlación genética entre efectos directos y maternos fueron 0.12 y -0.65, 0.16 y -0.72, y 0.20 y -0.84 para peso al nacimiento, peso al destete ajustado a 205 días y ganancia posdestete, respectivamente. Para peso al destete ajustado a 205 días, el estimador de la varianza del ambiente materno permanente (28.93 kg2) explicó un 4 % del estimador de la varianza fenotípica (765.43 kg2). La respuesta esperada a la selección para una sola característica de crecimiento de ganado Charolais mexicano, podría ser menor debido a las altas y negativas correlaciones entre efectos genéticos directos y maternos.
