Context: Prostate cancer remains a significant global health concern, and understanding the molecular drivers of this disease is crucial for developing effective diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. Steroid receptor coactivator-3 (SRC-3), a member of the SRC family, has emerged as a key player in prostate cancer pathogenesis. Aims: To examine the role of SRC-3 in prostate cancer, encompassing molecular mechanisms, clinical implications, and therapeutic opportunities. Methods: A systematic literature search following PRISMA guidelines was conducted in PubMed, PMC, and other relevant databases to identify studies that investigate SRC-3 in prostate cancer. Results: 785 articles were retrieved from databases using specific keywords and MeSH terms related to SRC-3 and Prostate Cancer. After removing 461 duplicates, 260 articles were excluded based on title and abstract review. Subsequently, a comprehensive screening by three researchers resulted in 47 relevant articles for this systematic review. Evidence suggests that SRC-3 expression correlates with prostate cancer aggressiveness, disease recurrence, and poor patient outcomes. Its potential as a diagnostic biomarker and therapeutic target if explored, offers insights into personalized medicine approaches. Conclusions: SRC-3 plays a pivotal role in prostate cancer, influencing disease progression and clinical outcomes. Understanding the molecular intricacies of SRC-3 in prostate cancer offers new opportunities for precision medicine and innovative therapeutic approaches. This review provides a comprehensive overview of SRC-3's involvement in prostate cancer, emphasizing its clinical relevance and potential as a therapeutic target, ultimately contributing to improved patient care in the era of personalized oncology.

La idea de que la comunidad política se extiende en el tiempo se encuentra en tensión con presupuestos usuales acerca de la topología del tiempo y la dirección temporal de la causalidad. La tensión puede ser resuelta si se adoptan tres tesis: 1) las normas jurídicas –en especial la Constitución– son la expresión de expectativas o preferencias colectivas futuras de los ciudadanos del pasado; 2) existen algunos objetos que no están en el presente; 3) el valor que tiene la vida que alguien ha vivido depende metafísicamente de la satisfacción de sus preferencias.

Introduction: Klotho, a key aging regulator, is predominantly expressed in the kidney. Various methods now enable the measurement of soluble αKlotho blood levels in humans. Limited studies have explored the renal origin of circulating αKlotho in humans. Methods: Soluble αKlotho in the inferior vena cava blood was measured using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kit using blood samples from patients undergoing adrenal venous catheterization for close examination of primary aldosteronism. Results: The concentration at the suprarenal inferior vena cava (476 ± 68.2) was significantly higher than that at the infrarenal inferior vena cava (434 ± 74.8) (p = 0.018), with a rate of change of 8.12 (2.3)%. Conclusions: We demonstrate a step-up in αKlotho concentration from the infrarenal to suprarenal vena cava in humans, supporting the kidney's origin of soluble αKlotho in the bloodstream. Resumen: Introducción: Klotho, un regulador clave del envejecimiento, se expresa predominantemente en el riñón. En la actualidad, diversos métodos permiten medir el nivel sanguíneo de α-klotho soluble en humanos. Son escasos los estudios que han explorado el origen renal de la α-klotho circulante en humanos. Métodos: Se midió la α-klotho soluble en la sangre de la vena cava inferior mediante un kit de ensayo inmunoabsorbente ligado a enzimas en muestras de sangre de pacientes con cateterismo venoso suprarrenal para un examen detallado del aldosteronismo primario. Resultados: La concentración en la vena cava inferior suprarrenal (476 ± 68,2) fue significativamente superior a la de la vena cava inferior infrarrenal (434 ± 74,8) (p = 0,018), con una tasa de variación del 8,12% (2,3%). Conclusiones: Demostramos un aumento de la concentración de α-klotho desde la vena cava infrarrenal a la suprarrenal en humanos, lo que respalda el origen renal de α-klotho soluble en el torrente sanguíneo.

ABSTRACT Wheel slipping and fuel consumption are variables influenced by tire pressure, speed, ballasting, and soil surface. Once the tractor is present in all agricultural operations, knowledge of these variables is essential to achieving the most operational efficiency. This study aimed to develop an embedded system to collect data and show tractor slipping and fuel consumption in real-time via smartphone. The system was developed using prototyping platforms and validated through randomized field tests under four speeds and two terrain conditions. Three methods for determining slippage under different conditions were compared. The developed embedded system determined an agricultural tractor's slipping and fuel consumption conditions. The slip and fuel consumption rates varied depending on the type of rolling surface (ground preparations) and the tractor's operating speeds. Conventional tillage surface increased fuel demand by 6% and slippage by 17% compared to no-till rates. The proposed embedded system found similar results and could present the slipping values in the developed Android to real-time operation compared to a conventional method. This application shows both slipping and fuel consumption values over time on graphs, which can be very useful during machine operation, helping to define better configuration and reduce environmental impacts.

ABSTRACTThis study aimed to investigate the impact of microwave drying (MD), microwave vacuum drying (MVD), freeze drying (FD), vacuum drying (VD), hot air drying (HAD), and sun drying (SD) on the quality attributes of freeze-thaw pretreated beetroots. The quality characteristics including physical properties, bioactive compounds, and antioxidant activities of dried beetroots were evaluated. The results showed that the freeze-thaw pretreated beetroots obtained using FD displayed the lowest shrinkage rate, hardness, and total color difference (ΔE), and the highest rehydration ratio of 6.49. FD, MD, and MVD resulted in porous structures of freeze-thaw pretreated beetroots. The highest betalains, ascorbic acid, total phenolic and total flavonoids contents were found in freeze-thaw pretreated beetroots prepared by MVD. Meanwhile, the largest FRAP value and ABTS free radical scavenging ability of freeze-thaw pretreated beetroots were obtained by MVD. These findings suggested that MVD is a more favorable method for drying freeze-thaw pretreated beetroots.

This paper examined female education and employment in Nigeria. The 2018 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey data (NDHS, 2018) was used. After sorting out for missing data, 28,494 women’s individual data were used. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Multinomial logit regression. Only 0.3% of women in Nigeria are unemployed while 99.7% are employed in skilled and unskilled jobs. However, only 13.4% of the women are engaged in skilled employment; 8.5% are in professional/technical/managerial jobs while 4.9% are involved in skilled manual. The majority (86.3%) are in the unskilled manual employment category; 1.6% in clerical, 49.4% in sales, 9.5% in services, 0.1% in unskilled manual and 25.7% in Agriculture. The likelihood of being involved in professional/technical/managerial employment by women in Nigeria increases with age (0.06), region {North West (1.18), South West (1.87}, educational level {secondary (0.68), tertiary (1.64)}, wealth index{richer (0.90), richest(0.95)}. On the other hand, the likelihood of being engaged in professional/technical/managerial employment type reduces with large household size >10persons (-0.71). Engagement of women in skilled employment types are driven by education while education discourages them in engaging in unskilled employment types. However, because the highest proportion of the women have secondary education, they are found more in the unskilled employment types. Also, engagement in skilled employment types is driven by wealth index while age drives skilled and unskilled employment types. Nigerian women are not much involved in skilled employment, the right policy should be put in place to educate girls beyond the secondary education level and enlighten them on the need to be involved in skilled employment.

Tanto en Europa como en nuestro Estado, la política de aguas tiene por finalidad proteger el agua como recurso para, con ello, asegurar las necesidades humanas de suministro y el desempeño de su función en los ecosistemas naturales. Pero ninguna política pública se basta por sí misma para conseguir sus objetivos, pues es necesario articular jurídicamente su relación con otras políticas y otros sectores del ordenamiento jurídico. En este artículo se analizan las relaciones en España entre la política de aguas y el planeamiento urbanístico; en dichas relaciones (aunque presididas por el principio de coordinación y el respeto a los ámbitos competenciales de todos los niveles de poder territorial del Estado), el principio constitucional de sostenibilidad, la política de aguas de la UE y la puesta en valor del urbanismo ecosistémico inclinan doctrinal y jurisprudencialmente el punto de equilibrio hacia la prevalencia (con matices y límites competenciales) de los instrumentos jurídicos en los que se plasma la política de aguas.

Over the last decade, a significant vector of Ukrainian literature was the reception of the traumatic stress caused by the Russian-Ukrainian war. The works of Kateryna Kalytko, representing intensive metamodern explorations in contemporary poetry, occupy a significant place in this trend. The article interprets the poet’s idiostyle based on the collection People with Verbs (2022). This study focuses on the analysis of folklore archetypes in the author’s poetry, motifs, and verbal structures, whose origins are rooted in ancient Ukrainian incantational traditions. It also covers the interpretation of the poet’s meditative experience with the magic of language, its role in strengthening the spiritual axiology of a person suffering from terrorist aggression, and the establishment of a stoical worldview despite the fragility of life. This article aims to establish the concept of ‘incantation’ as a unifying system within the metaphorical world of the poetry collection People with Verbs. The term ‘incantation’ is interpreted as the functioning of verbal constructions aimed at healing from trauma, and the composition of incantatory metaphorical texts, inspired by the belief in the magical power of words. The paper applies such methods as comparative, structural, semiotic, anthropological, and hermeneutical analysis, as well as elements of the psychological school of literary studies. The study proves the actualization of the sacred worldview pre-system in the artistic thinking of contemporary Ukrainian poets, as illustrated by Kateryna Kalytko’s collection People with Verbs. It focuses on the author’s reflections and meditations during the war, appeals to suggestive speech preserved by genetic memory, and the use of its structures as a form of defence and resistance. The binary time-spatial model of the poet is marked by the cult of night, which corresponds to the ritual and spiritual practice in the field of the mystical. Kateryna Kalytko intensively operates with pagan archetypes and signs, and resorts to the use of proper names, emphasizing that even their pronunciation has a protective energy. The figurative system of corporeality, which is in line with the tradition of incantations, is indicative of the poetics of the collection. It concerns the specific markings (eyes, head, lips, muscles, lungs, heart, spine, knees, joints, throat, intestines, entrails, veins, etc.) that are part of the metaphorical structures of the incantatory nature. There are parallels with the healing modus of folk spells, firstly, the poetess tries to stop the bloodshed and protect the defenders with her words. In the spirit of the ethnocultural tradition, Kateryna Kalytko endows certain lexical signs with the function of verbal amulets (earth, roots, river, boat, stones, wood, forest, house, fire, wind, bird, feather, beast, iron, ash, crystal, etc.) At the same time, the poet’s metaphor is an objectification of the extrasensory perception of the act of speaking. The focus of Kateryna Kalytko’s artistic studio is the articulatory apparatus, the miracle of the birth of sound and voice, as evidenced by a number of tropes, whose centre is the word “throat”. The poet also tries to comprehend the changes in phonetics, vocabulary, morphology, and stylistics caused by the war. Kateryna Kalytko’s poetic search is correlated with the philosophical interpretation of the phenomenon of language by M. Heidegger, H.-G. Gadamer, and K. Jasperas. For the author, in accordance with the realities of war, the well-known statement “language is home” is transformed into the metaphor “language is a shelter”. Thus, in Kateryna Kalytko’s idiostyle, one can guess the pathos of whisperers, fortune tellers, healers, and molfars who resist evil with words. At the same time, the image of the author-medium is complemented by the hypostases of a witness of the Russian-Ukrainian war and a philologist.

The research examines the peculiarities of the formation of the German language in the New High German period using the example of the plan of the Ukrainian city in Podil – Kamianets-Podilskyi. This document was created in 1726 in the city of Augsburg (northern Germany) by the famous German engraver and cartographer Gabriel Bodenehr. The work aims to study the process of the formation of the New High German language at its early stage in historical, cultural, regional and linguistic contexts; to illustrate them on the example of the text of the explication of the city plan. The task of this research is to characterize the peculiarities of the process of normalization of the German language in the New High German period; to determine changes in language levels on the example of the German text of the explanation of the city plan of Kamianets-Podilskyi. To achieve the specified goal and solve the tasks, the following research methods were used: descriptive, comparative-historical, biographical, comparative, and linguistic. As a result of the research, it was found that the text of the plan, although it was written in the New High German period, which is characterized by the desire to create a language standard and the departure from regional dialects, still retains its regional flavour and reference to the written norm of the Viennese chancellery. The conducted research proved that the orthographic and phonetic levels were most affected by the region, where there are significant variations of graphemes in marking the length and shortness of the sound, qualitative changes in vowel sounds, orthographic and graphic features of consonant markings, gravitation to the norms of the Viennese chancellery, as well as a gradual rejection of orthographic norms of the Middle High German period. Certain changes at the morphological level were found in the explication text, which testifies to the formation and consolidation of some grammatical categories (tense forms of verbs, use of passive constructions, declension of nouns and adjectives). The information focus of the text determines its lexical content, which can be seen in the author’s extensive use of anthroponyms (names of architectural and church buildings) and toponyms. The historical and cultural context of the development of the city of Kamianets-Podilskyi is reflected in the author’s use of proper names (names of historical figures, religious orders, political and military groups) and a significant number of borrowings from French, Turkish/Arabic, Latin, and Italian languages. It has been established that the syntactic level is the most normalized and closest to the modern German language. Therefore, the conducted linguistic analysis of the text of the city plan testified that in the first half of the 18th century, there was no complete unification of the written norm of the German literary language. However, separate attempts were made to standardize it. Among the promising research areas, it is worth conducting a comparative analysis of other city plans of this period in order to identify common features in the development of the German language.

The article deals with translation strategies implemented in English-Ukrainian rendering of dualnumber quantifiers ‘both,’ ‘either,’ ‘neither’ that occur in modern fantasy fiction. The study aims to identify local and global translation strategies and methods of their adequate rendering at the post-translation stage of generalizing the translator’s experience. The research objectives are: 1) to compile a complete register of the lexemes under investigation based on J.K. Rowling’s “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban” and its authorized Ukrainian translation produced by V. Morozov.; 2) to determine their semantic and functional characteristics and direct translation equivalents; 3) to identify their semantic roles and syntactic functions in the source text; 4) to specify the types of grammatical shifts and methods of their rendering into Ukrainian; 5) to identify and analyze the translation strategies applied by the translator to reach equivalence and adequacy of translation. The research material comprises 96 dual-number quantifiers used in the original text and their translations in the corresponding Ukrainian text fragments. In the course of the study, the following methods were employed: 1) entire sampling to compile a register of the lexemes and accomplish the source and target text levelling; 2) dictionary entries’ analysis to establish the lexical-semantic and functional properties of the quantifiers and their direct Ukrainian translation equivalents; 3) contextual analysis and immediate constituents’ analysis to identify their semantic roles and syntactic functions in the source text; 4) comparative-contrastive translation transformational analysis to specify the translation methods and types of grammatical shifts applied in their rendering; 5) to identify and analyze the translation strategies implemented by the translator; 6) quantity calculations to determine the frequencies of the analyzed phenomena. As a result, based on dictionary entries’ analysis, the main functional-semantic classes of the quantifiers have been found to be the determiner, pronoun, conjunction and pronominal adverb. By means of immediate constituents’ and contextual analysis, 17 pure and blended semantic roles of the lexemes’ referents in ‘state of affairs’ situations have been identified, the most frequent being the agent (36.4%), locative (14.6%) and experiencer (11.4%). By way of sentence parsing, 19 combinations of the semantic roles and syntactic functions have been established, the most frequent one being the agent subject (37.5%), the others showing frequencies around 10%. With the aid of translation transformational analysis, the most common methods of rendering the dual-number quantifiers into Ukrainian have been found to be omission (62.5%), equivalent (literal) translation (21.9%) and lexical substitution (15.6%). Correspondingly, the main translation strategies, including ST-oriented and TToriented ones, have been proved to be 1) communicative translation (68.8%) by omission with emphasis decrease, related and unrelated-word paraphrase, clause/sentence structure change and explicitness decrease, and by equivalent with emphasis change and clause/sentence structure change and/or addition; 2) literal translation (15.6%) including direct translation (4.2%) by pure equivalent and oblique translation (11.4%) by blended equivalent. i.e. with emphasis change and/or clause/sentence change; 3) semantic translation (15.6%) involving synonymy, emphasis change, phrase structure change, modulation, clause/ sentence structure change and explicitness decrease, 4) domestication (100%) incorporated in the above three strategies, all applied to ensure equivalence and adequacy of the translation.

The new media effectively plays the role of speedily conveying media content to various online communities, and this internet technology also allows for the storage and retrieval of content. The organizers of Big Brother Naija (BBN) appear to have leveraged this facility to interact with the audience of the reality show in the most profound manner in the Nigerian media ecosystem. Adopting John Locke's Empiricist Reflection Theory (ERT), the article uses quantitative and qualitative research methods to examine if coders (the new media audience) perceived the promotion of nudity, illicit sex, inordinate kisses, and vulgarity in the 2018 edition of the Big Brother Naija (BBN), codenamed "Double Wahala." A checklist of 72 internal consistency reliability was used to obtain the quantitative data while the data were analyzed using simple percentages and a pie chart. This was complemented by qualitative research modalities of historical-analytic and document observation methods. The study found that the participants and organizers have, for economic reasons, thrown caution on morality and values to the wind with the outcome of actual sexual intercourse among the participants amounting to 52% among other studied variables. The conclusion reached is that the organizers of the program should redesign it to promote wholesome entertainment, education, and enlightenment of the audience, especially the youth in Nigeria.

Abstract This brief paper proposes a Cariban etymology for the Wajãpi (Tupi-Guarani) verb -kasi ‘be strong’, which has been incorrectly suggested as being of Tupi-Guarani provenance. It is proposed that the source language for this diffusion event was Apalai, and not Wayana, as is usually claimed when the issue of the Cariban influx into Wajãpi is addressed. Two other Cariban loans are discussed, pipi ‘father’s sister’ and kasuru ‘pearl’, and in these cases as well, it is shown that diffusion from Apalai, not Wayana, is the more likely scenario. Implications of the findings are discussed.

While actions leading to environmental degradation already have global consequences threatening the very existence of humanity, the war in Ukraine has once again proved the effectiveness of existing international environmental protection mechanisms. The purpose of this study is to analyze existing international environmental protection mechanisms from the perspective of the possibility of criminalizing the crime of ecocide. Based on the analysis of the domestic law of countries that have incorporated ecocide as a crime, it follows that national approaches to addressing this issue depend on historical conditions and have significant differences. These differences hinder the prosecution of ecocide in the absence of appropriate international legal mechanisms, while the consequences of ecocide cause global damage. An analysis of the state of international regulations has shown that despite the existence of an extensive environmental protection mechanism, it remains imperfect, thus making it impossible to prosecute ecocide unless it is done in connection with war crimes. An assessment of the data presented in the reports on the war in Ukraine shows that participation in relevant international conventions does not in any way guarantee that the aggressor country will not violate its international obligations. It is shown that recognizing ecocide as a crime at the international level remains the only effective means to bring perpetrators to justice. The results of the study can be used to further improve the legal mechanisms for prosecuting ecocide, in teaching legal disciplines, and in further academic research.

Introducción: En la pandemia de COVID-19 los servicios de urgencias utilizaron las escalas de gravedad de la neumonía. Sin embargo, se desconocía el desempeño de las escalas en nuestro país. Objetivo: Evaluar el desempeño de las escalas de gravedad CRB-65, PSI, qSOFA, qCSI y NEWS2 como predictores de muerte en la COVID-19. Método: Estudio longitudinal, analítico, de cohorte retrospectiva. Incluyó mayores de 18 años, de ambos sexos, con test rápido o prueba de reacción en cadena de la polimerasa positiva para COVID-19. El estudio fue realizado del 1 de abril de 2020 al 1 de abril de 2022. Se evaluaron las escalas CRB-65, PSI, qSOFA, qCSI y NEWS2 en cada caso. Resultados: Se incluyeron 225 pacientes (143 mujeres, 63.6%) con una media de edad de 59.4 años (DE: 14.7). La comorbilidad incluyó diabetes mellitus (47.6%), hipertensión arterial (45.8%) y obesidad (20.9%). La muerte se presentó en el 55% de los casos. El PSI tuvo un AUC de 0.717 (IC95%: 0.649-0.784) y la escala qCSI de 0.703 (IC95%: 0.634-0.771). Además, se evaluó el índice de Youden, siendo para PSI de 0.27, para qCSI de 0.18, para qSOFA de 0.13, para NEWS2 de 0.12 y para CRB-65 de 0.10. La saturación de oxígeno < 89% aumentó el riesgo de muerte en un 45% (OR: 3.45; IC95%: 1.742-6.838). Conclusiones: El desempeño de las escalas de gravedad en la COVID-19 fue superior con PSI y qCSI para determinar la gravedad relacionada con la muerte. Sin embargo, la valoración debe individualizarse con varias escalas y criterios adicionales.

Background: Activated phosphoinositide 3-kinase delta syndrome (APDS) [OMIM 615513] is an inborn error of immunity with autosomal dominant inheritance caused by a pathogenic variant in the PIK3CD gene. The prevalence ratio of APDS is < 1: 1,000,000 newborns. The main clinical features of APDS are sinopulmonary infections, benign lymphoproliferation, autoinflammatory disease, and a major risk of lymphoid neoplasms. Clinical case: A 17-year-old female with a history of pneumonia at 9 months of age subsequently developed recurrent respiratory tract infections, bronchiectasis, perforated otitis media, unilateral tonsillar lymphoid hyperplasia, pansinusitis, recurrent oral candidiasis, and chronic rhinitis. Laboratory studies reported persistent leukopenia and lymphopenia, low CD4 lymphocyte subpopulation, and persistently elevated immunoglobulin M immunoglobulin studies with values up to 692 mg/dL. An inborn error of immunity next-generation sequencing and multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification analysis detected a heterozygous pathogenic variant in the PIK3CD gene, compatible with APDS. Treatment with monthly injectable gamma globulin and prophylactic antibiotics was started, allowing better control of the infectious processes. Conclusion: This is the second case of APDS reported in Mexico in the literature. It is important to be aware of this condition to make a timely diagnosis, which requires a high clinical suspicion and immunological and genetic studies to provide adequate treatment and prevent complications.

Exploring the triacylglycerols composition in milk samples from different ruminant species is crucial for dairy product development. Identifying the fatty acid (FA) composition in human milk is essential and is usually performed using gas chromatography (GC). Heat maps are useful for visualizing these results, aiding in pattern identification and relationships between samples and variables. Additionally, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy provides important qualitative and quantitative information about fatty acids (FA). In the present study, we compare the fatty acid composition in samples of HM, cow milk, and goat milk, as well as to demonstrate their positional distribution in triacylglycerols (TAGs). Human milk contains 49.21% saturated fatty acids (SFAs), 34.32% monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA), and 16.47% polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), including 2.14% docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and 13.02% linoleic acid (LA). On the other hand, cow and goat milk have higher proportions of SFAs (56.2 and 58.02%, respectively) and MUFAs (40.56 and 40.95%, respectively), but lower amounts of PUFAs (3.24 and 1.03%, respectively), with significantly lower quantities of DHA (0.03 and 0.43%, respectively) and LA (1.46 and 2.76%, respectively). Additionally, fatty acids in ruminant milk mainly consist of long-chain fatty acids (LCFAs), with oleic acid being the most abundant.

Introducción y objetivos: El sistema de Tandilia (Buenos Aires, Argentina) es un refugio fundamental para una biota altamente diversa frente a la variabilidad climática durante el Cenozoico medio-tardío, especialmente para helechos y licofitas de la flora pampeana. La geología y cercanía al mar del sudeste del sistema de Tandilia plantean interrogantes sobre la composición y afinidades biogeográficas de helechos y licofitas. Ante la transformación antrópica del paisaje urge inventariar las especies y los microambientes en los que se desarrollan. Este trabajo presenta un inventario de la riqueza y frecuencia de helechos y licofitas del sudeste de Tandilia asociado a diferentes microambientes serranos, su afinidad biogeográfica y una clave dicotómica para el área. M&M: Se realizaron colectas entre 2006-2024 en sierras de los Partidos de Balcarce y General Pueyrredon y se comparó estos registros con los de la flora de helechos y licofitas de Ventania y Tandilia. Resultados: El sudeste de Tandilia registra el 51% de los helechos y licofitos reportados para el Sistema de Tandilia. Se observó un incremento de elementos austro-brasileños y una disminución de austral-antárticos vinculado a aspectos latitudinales y biogeográficos. Se determinaron adaptaciones que les permiten desarrollarse en un gradiente de disponibilidad hídrica asociado a diferentes microambientes. Ocho especies fueron catalogadas como raras debido a su baja frecuencia. Conclusiones: Los resultados muestran la necesidad planificar áreas de conservación de la flora de helechos y licofitas del sistema serrano de Tandilia.

The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith has promulgated documents on sterilization that disregard relevant features of women’s experiences of dangers in pregnancy. After analyzing the shortcomings of key CDF documents, I retrieve a solidly probable opinion developed before Vatican II by moral theologians John Ford and Gerald Kelly, who used casuistry, moral principles, and pastoral approaches that are attentive to women who face the possibility of dangerous pregnancies. I argue that their probable opinion can be instructive for pastors and laity as they discern how to apply the church’s teaching on sterilization. I conclude the essay by explaining how such a retrieval advances justice for women today.

In this theo-ethical roundtable, scholars from China, the Philippines, USA, India, and UK reflect on the role of the Catholic Church in advancing justice with regard to reproduction and highlight how the Church has served as either a resource or roadblock to the realization of social justice.

The study documents the presence of the box jellyfish Carybdea marsupialis in the waters of the Ionian Sea in Italy, which constitutes important data for the knowledge of new areal distribution of this species along the coasts of the Mediterranean basin. Carybdea marsupialis belongs to the phylum Cnidaria, class Cubozoa, and is known for its stinging and potentially dangerous stings for humans, making it a species of significant ecological and health interest. The species has previously been observed in other areas of the western Mediterranean, but the report in the Ionian Sea represents an eastward expansion of its distribution range. Results suggest that climate change, influenced by global warming processes and anthropogenic activities, facilitated the expansion of this species into the rest of the Mediterranean Sea. The work highlights the importance of continuous monitoring of indigenous and non-indigenous species and calls for international cooperation to manage any ecological impacts linked to the spread of these marine species.

Background: Maize landraces show remarkable diversity and environmental adaptability in Mexico. Nevertheless, few studies have explored physiological mechanisms used by different maize landraces to grow and yield in a particular agroecological region. Question: How do three landrace maize populations from contrasting maize races in southeastern Mexico, differ in their responses in terms of growth, chlorophyll fluorescence, and gas exchange? Studied species: Zea mays L. Study site and date: Yucatan, Mexico; 2017. Methods: The field experiment followed a complete randomized block design, with six replicates. Three contrasting maize landraces were evaluated as treatments. Response variables were vegetative traits, dry matter allocation, yield components, and maize physiological responses. Data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA and post hoc Tukey multiple comparison test (P ≤ 0.05). Results: Maize landraces showed differences in cycle length, plant morphology, and yield performance. The long cycle maize landrace Xnuc-naal, had tall plants that accumulated 17 and 21 % more dry matter than Xmejen-naal and Elotillo, respectively. The short-cycle maize landraces Elotillo and Xmejen-naal exhibit superior physiological responses leading to higher grain yields compared to the Xnuc-naal. Conclusions: The landrace Xnuc-naal stood out for its ability in forage production, whereas Elotillo and Xmejen-naal exhibited notable physiological efficiency in grain production in southeastern Mexico.

Observance of the employee’s right to access information is important because the priority direction of state policy is the formation of a democratic country, which presupposes a strict observance of inalienable human rights and freedoms, maintenance of the rule of law and democracy. This study contributes to the development of the national legal system, protection of human rights, and preparation of Ukraine for integration into the European legal framework. It is necessary to take into account and adapt European standards to ensure fair and effective mechanisms for protecting employees’ rights. Therefore, the study of the ECHR cases on the employee’s information right can help Ukraine to adapt its legislation and judicial practice to European standards, which is a necessary step towards joining the European Union. Background: Polystemma is characterized by a mixed indumentum of glandular trichomes that turn white, rotate to rotate-campanulate corollas, a gynostegial corona with filiform appendages, and fusiform follicles. The taxon has undergone numerous taxonomic changes in recent years. In current phylogenies, Polystemma has been recovered as paraphyletic and many of its species require a new combination. In this study, we propose the corresponding changes and describe, map, and illustrate three new species within this genus. Questions: Do morphological data support the transfer of Matelea species to Polystemma? Are the plants of Polystemma collected in Durango, Jalisco, and Sinaloa different species? Studied species: Polystemma. Study site and dates: United States, Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua y Costa Rica, between 2022 and 2024. Methods: More than 3,000 specimens from 20 herbaria and virtual databases were reviewed. Distribution maps were generated, and risk categories were proposed. The cohesive species concept was proposed as an explanatory hypothesis for taxon recognition. Results: A total of 27 species of the genus were recognized, these distributed from the southeastern United States of America to Costa Rica. Eleven new combinations and three lectotypifications are made, and three new species for science are proposed. Identification key, nomenclatural type information, synonyms, habitat, images of all species and distribution maps are also included. Conclusions: The review of this genus allowed for updating and improving the systematics within the subtribe Gonolobinae. Likewise, it highlights Mexico as the center of diversity and endemism for Polystemma.

Reducing greenhouse gas emissions in concrete production is crucial to achieve sustainability goals. One of the primary solutions is employing environmentally friendly cements with lower clinker content, such as those containing supplementary cementitious materials. However, concretes produced with some of these cements are vulnerable to fast carbonation, which raises durability concerns regarding corrosion of the steel reinforcement. While traditional approaches focus on preventing concrete carbonation and corrosion initiation, evidence shows that corrosion rates of steel in carbonated concrete do not necessarily compromise durability. In this context, the fundamental understanding of the kinetics of carbonation-induced corrosion must be improved, considering the role of the concrete pore solution, pore structure, and moisture content, as discussed in this paper. Open questions and promising approaches to clarify them are also discussed. Based on this knowledge, corrosion propagation can be properly included in the service life design of reinforced concrete structures, reconciling the goals for both sustainable and durable structures.

ABSTRACT The disposal of domestic effluents without an adequate treatment may increase nitrogen and phosphorus levels in natural water bodies. Bioremediation using microalgae is one of the solutions for treating effluents before disposal. We tested the effect of Scenedesmus acuminatus, Chlorella vulgaris and Planktothrix isothrix, as well as the effect of water dilution, on the nutrient concentration in water eutrophicated by domestic effluent in an urban lake in the Brazilian Amazon. We inoculated the three species in monoculture in undiluted water (PW0), and 50% (PW50) and 90% (PW90) diluted water. The experiment lasted 10 days and every 24 hours we removed a bottle of each treatment for nutrient analysis. The three species were equally efficient in removing ammonia in PW0. Nitrate removal rate was highest for Chlorella vulgaris in PW0, and higher for C. vulgaris and P. isothrix in PW50 and PW90. Orthophosphate removal efficiency was higher for S. acuminatus and C. vulgaris in PW0, equally efficient for the three species in PW50, and higher for C. vulgaris and P. isothrix in PW90. We concluded that the three species of microalgae tested are efficient in removing ammonia. Scenedesmus acuminatus was not an ideal species for nitrate removal. Planktothrix isothrix was efficient in removing nutrients when domestic wastewater is diluted. Chlorella vulgaris was efficient in removing nutrients from domestic wastewater whether diluted or not.

Nos proponemos exponer las participaciones de los obispos argentinos en el decurso de las reflexiones sobre el esquema conciliar La Iglesia en el mundo contemporáneo. Intervinieron con 31 aportes en temas que captaron su preocupación pastoral, entre ellos, la importancia de los tópicos que contenía el texto, el ateísmo comunista, los destinatarios y el lenguaje redaccional del esquema, la solidaridad con los pobres, el diálogo con el mundo, la naturaleza y la actividad de la persona humana, el matrimonio y la guerra y la paz. Sabiendo que la constitución conciliar tuvo un esmerado y extenso tratamiento en los temas abordados, reflexionaremos las intervenciones de los obispos siguiendo la secuencia cronológica e indicando alguna trama breve de las deliberaciones que se diseñaban en el aula conciliar. Finalmente esbozaremos algunas conclusiones vinculadas a los tópicos que estudiamos.

Pulsed eddy currents can be used to determine the thickness of a conducting plate. This method is extended to enable the measurement of the plate thickness and its material properties simultaneously. The need for a calibration of the material properties of a conducting plate to enable the measurement of its thickness has been removed. The method relies on a suitable geometry with well known dimensions and suitable hardware to create a current pulse and measure a transient magnetic induction. For an optimal performance, the design depends on the thickness range that should be accessible.

Objetivo. Identificar la presencia del virus del Oeste del Nilo en equinos y mosquitos en ocho municipios del departamento del Meta. Materiales y métodos. La investigación contó con el aval del Comité de bioética de la Universidad de los Llanos. Se analizaron mediante pruebas serológicas y moleculares 613 muestras de equinos criollos y de raza cuarto de milla, destinados a actividades deportivas y de trabajo, con un rango de edad de 2 a 15 años, en los transectos: Villavicencio-Restrepo-Cumaral, San Martín - Castilla la Nueva-Granada y Puerto López-Puerto Gaitán, analizados en 62 pool y 213 mosquitos. Los pool de sueros de equinos y mosquitos fueron analizados por ELISA y PCR. Resultados. No se encontraron animales seropositivos mediante la prueba de ELISA y las pruebas moleculares también fueron negativas. Conclusiones. Aunque en este estudio no se evidenció la presencia de anticuerpos IgM por la técnica de Elisa y las pruebas moleculares (RT-PCR) también fueron negativas para circulación viral, en los municipios objeto de estudio, es importante indicar que la detección molecular en sueros, requiere unos niveles de viremia representativos y que el animal se encuentre en la fase aguda de la enfermedad. Aunque es posible que la población equina se mantenga libre de contacto con el virus, se debe mantener la vigilancia epidemiológica frente a este importante patógeno para la salud humana, especialmente por la presentación de brotes de otros virus zoonóticos como la Encefalitis Equina del Este y Encefalitis Equina Venezolana en los departamentos del Meta y Casanare, contiguo a este.

This work describes the first chemical study on the metabolic profile of three geopropolis samples from Melipona fulva, M. compressipes, and M. paraensis collected in the Amazonian region. The samples were submitted to solvent extractions. The silylated hexane extracts were submitted to GC-MS analysis and tentatively identified mainly the presence of triterpenes, steroids, fatty acids, and alcohols. The chemical profile of M. fulva of and M. compressipes geopropolis are similar. However, cholesterol, triacontanol, and palmitic acid are the main compounds in M. fulva; in M. compressipes, palmitic acid, linoleic acid, and oleic acid are predominant. The chemical profile of the M. paraensis sample is entirely different once more than 60% of the extract comprises lupenone and triacontanol. The CHCl3 soluble fraction of the MeOH extract of the M. paraensis geopropolis was submitted to chromatographic techniques, and it afforded cycloartenol, 24-methylene-cycloartenol, lupeol, α- and β-amirins, and 7-O-methylaromadendrin. The MeOH extract of this sample presents antimicrobial activities against strains of Streptococcus mutans, S. sobrinus, and S. aureus (MIC of 15.6-62.5 µg mL−1 and MBC of 62.5-1000 µg mL−1). The M. fulva and M. compressipes geopropolis were not active in this test.
