A total of 36 groups of sand-concrete interface loading and unloading direct shear tests were used to analyze the mechanical properties of the pile side-soil interface. The test results show that the interface residual shear stress for the same applied normal stress tends to be constant for the rough sand-concrete interface. The initial shear modulus and peak shear stress of the interface both decrease with the degree of unloading and increase with the interface roughness. The maximum amount of interface shear dilatancy increases with the degree of unloading, and the maximum amount of interface shear shrinkage decreases with unloading for the same interface roughness. A pile side resistance-displacement model is established using the shear displacement method. The proposed function considers both the radial unloading effect and modulus degradation of soil around the pile. The effect of radial unloading and interface roughness on the degradation of the equivalent shear modulus is analyzed using a single fitting parameter b. Good agreement of the proposed model is confirmed by applying the direct shear tests of the 36 groups.

The quasi-static and dynamic mechanical behaviours of the concrete reinforced by twisting ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fibre bundles with different volume fractions have been investigated. It was indicated that the improved mixing methodology and fibre geometry guaranteed the uniform distribution of fibres in concrete matrix. The UHMWPE fibres significantly enhanced the splitting tensile strength and residual compressive strength of concrete. The discussions on the key property parameters showed that the UHMWPE fibre reinforced concrete behaved tougher than the plain concrete. Owing to the more uniform distribution of fibres and higher bonding strength at fibre/matrix interface, the UHMWPE fibre with improved geometry enhanced the quasi-static splitting tensile strength and compressive strength of concrete more significantly than the other fibres. The dynamic compression tests demonstrated that the UHMWPE fibre reinforced concrete had considerable strain rate dependency. The bonding between fibres and concrete matrix contributed to the strength enhancement under low strain-rate compression.

The present work aims at studying the formulation and characterization of self-compacting concrete equivalent mortars, using calcined mud from the dredged sediments brought from the dam (Western Algeria) and fly ash from the Central Thermal EDF (France). Three SCCEM samples were prepared; a control mortar sample and two mortar samples containing 22% of mineral additions, with a ratio W/B = 0.47. The analysis of the experimental results obtained indicates that mortars comprising calcined mud develop greater compressive strengths than those containing fly ash. Regarding free shrinkage, mortar with calcined mud is characterized by an autogenous shrinkage similar to those of control and fly ash mortars. However, it is more sensitive to total shrinkage and drying as compared to the other mortars. Under the conditions of restrained shrinkage, control and calcined mud mortars are more sensitive to early cracking than mortar based on fly ash.

Grisolia is one of the building stones most commonly found in the architectural heritage of southern Italy. Also known commercially as “gold stone” for its yellow intrusions, Grisolia was employed by the leading Calabrian schools of stonemasons, principally in the southern Italian regions of Calabria and Basilicata. It is an Upper Triassic crystalline carbonate quarried in the Verbicaro Unit on Calabria’s northern Tyrrhenian coast. Possessing petrographic, physical and mechanical properties that ensure stone strength and durability, it is a high-quality building material suitable for structural and ornamental uses. These properties can be attributed to its low open porosity and excellent hydric behavior (low capillary water absorption), as well as to its high mechanical strength and low anisotropy. These characteristics make it recommendable as a building material for both restoration and new construction.

This paper investigates the development of geopolymer foam boards, using perlite wastes as raw material. This type of lightweight materials combines the geopolymerization technology with the foaming process. The mechanism of foaming is based on the generation of a gas that is retained by the geopolymer matrix in the form of individual or interconnected voids. In this study, the inorganic foaming agent is hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), which is added into the initial paste in different quantities by mechanical stirring. The produced porous materials have effective densities between 408–476.5 kg/m3, thermal conductivities between 0.076–0.095 W/m.K and different type of microstructure, depending on the concentration of the activator and the foaming agent content. To assess the porosity and the size distribution of the voids, image processing techniques were applied on digital images of the samples. According to these results, the synthesized lightweight materials exhibit similar or even better thermal properties than the current concrete porous materials.

Red mud (bauxite residue) is an alkaline suspension that is the by-product of alumina production via the Bayer process. Its elevated annual production and the global inventory of red mud determine its valorisation. Granite can be used as a source of fluxing oxides for the ceramic industry, as can the flake-shaped waste generated during the flaming of granite. In this work, a set of ceramic pieces made of red mud and granite waste are prepared and characterised via X-ray diffraction, a hardness test, electron scanning microscopy, a leaching test, and determining open porosity, water absorption, bulk density and flexural strength of the samples. The main crystalline phases in the high-temperature fired products are hematite, pseudobrookite and anorthite; the presence of magnetite reveals their ferrimagnetic character. All samples present high mechanical properties. Leaching results are below critical levels established by regulations.

Fly ash and phosphogypsum were used as Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials (NORM) by-products for the synthesis of belite-sulfoaluminate clinkers. The influence of raw mixture composition and firing temperature was investigated. Clinkers and cements were examined by X-ray powder diffraction and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The compressive strength of the cements was determined after 28 days. Clinker phases identified included ye’elimite, ß-phase of belite, ternesite and gehlenite, while the main hydration product of the cement pastes was ettringite. The results showed that belite-sulfoaluminate cements can be fabricated with a compressive strength of 45.9 N/mm2 by firing the raw mixture (70 wt.% marl, 10 wt.% bauxite and 20 wt.% phosphogypsum) at a temperature of 1320°C/1h.

An in-depth knowledge of building materials is essential in order to preserve them. Tuffs are one of the main types volcanic rocks in the Canary Islands. They are mainly used in masonry or as a filler of the ornamental parts of the façades. In both cases, they have been protected to guarantee their durability. However, in recent years, the renderings have been eliminated and the stone has been exposed to the elements. In this paper, two types of Canary-Island volcanic tuffs were characterized from a physical and mechanical point of view as well as their energy conservation, in order to better understand their behaviour and analyze the criteria for preserving them. Thermal conductivity and fluxes increase 2-3 times in wet conditions, as compared to dry ones. This, together with their high porosity demands the use of renderings to avoid stone decay, and at the same time improving living conditions.

The aim of this research was to study the carbonation resistance of a blast furnace slag concrete (80% GBFS/20%OPC), with and without alkaline activation, and its influence on the corrosion of structural reinforcement. An OPC-based concrete produced under the same specifications was used as a reference material. To do this, the material was subjected to an accelerated carbonation process under controlled conditions (65% relative humidity, 1% CO2, 25°C). The half-cell potential (Ecorr), linear polarization resistance (LPR) tests showed that both concretes based on GBFS led to depassivation of the reinforcing steel at approximately 99 days, which is the time required for full carbonation of the evaluated concretes.

The purpose of this study was to isolate microorganisms associated to surface-affected concrete structures and to measure the in vitro dissolution of concrete based on the release of elements such as calcium and silicon. Although many microorganisms were detected only a fungus was capable of significantly decreasing the culture medium pH and releasing both elements. The molecular characterization allowed to identify the microorganism as Aspergillus carbonaurius, a citric-acid producing fungus that dissolved concrete in the in vitro test. After seven days of incubation, the soluble calcium concentration in the uninoculated culture medium containing concrete was 172.3 mg/L, while in the inoculated medium it was 525.0 mg/L. The soluble silicon concentration in the uninoculated medium was 10.3 mg/L, while in the inoculated medium it was 50.1 mg/L. These findings showed that plants and microorganisms rendered a synergistic effect accelerating the biodeterioration of concrete.

An artificial arenite was developed from the waste of the sandstone industry. The waste sandstone was treated to obtain different grain sizes that were recombined to reproduce the natural texture. An unsaturated polyester resin was added to the mixture of grains and the cement polymerization was initiated with methyl ethyl ketone peroxide. The product was compacted under pressure of 1.5 to 9.7 MPa and cured at 70 °C. The result was a new material with the appearance of the natural rock. Artificial sandstones were studied by SEM microanalysis, petrography study and XRF analysis. Measurements of flexural strength (9.9 MPa), apparent density (2110 kg/cm3), open porosity (7.6%), water absorption (1.2%), abrasion resistance (19 mm) and photostability (AE * = - 0.009) were carried out. The influence of the design of the mixture and its composition (fraction of aggregates, resin content and pressure) on the texture and the mechanical properties was studied.

This paper extends the previous work of the authors and deals with the study of fracture of sandwich panels of plasterboard and rock wool under in-plane bending and tensile loading. It presents the results of the experimental campaign focused on the size effect of the tested specimens. To this end, mixed-mode (I and II) fracture tests have been carried out with specimens of three different sizes. The experimental results are compared with the values obtained from the numerical simulation of the test by using a model based on the embedded cohesive crack developed by the authors in previous published works. Comparison of the results shows how the model is able to reproduce the size effect of the specimens in this material from the parameters that characterize fracture behaviour. The aim is to use the cohesive model proposed by the authors to move from laboratory tests to a built panel.

This research aimed to study the effect of finenesses of bagasse ash (BGA) on the alkali-silica reaction of mortar. The BGA sample was ground to have particles retained on a sieve No. 325 of 33±1% and 5±1% by weight. Ground BGA samples were used separately to replace ordinary Portland cement (OPC) at rates of 10, 20, 30 and 40% by weight of binder to cast mortars. The compressive strengths and the alkali-silica reaction (ASR) of mortars were investigated. The results showed that a large particle size of BGA is not suitable for use in lowering ASR because it results in a low compressive strength and high expansion due to ASR. The mortars containing BGA with higher fineness exhibited higher compressive strength and lower expansion due to ASR than the mortars containing BGA with lower fineness. The results also suggested that the ground BGA retained on a sieve No. 325 of less than 5% by weight is suitable to be used as a good pozzolan which provides high compressive strength and reduces the expansion of mortar due to ASR even though it contains high LOI. The obtained results also encourage the utilization of ground BGA effectively which leads to reduce the disposal of bagasse ash.

Construction and demolition waste can be used as a substitution of natural aggregate in mortar and concrete elaboration. A poorer quality of recycled aggregates generally has negative impact on mortar properties. Shrinkage is one of the properties that experiences worse outcome due to the higher absorption of recycled aggregates. This research evaluates the potential shrinkage of mortars elaborated with recycled concrete aggregates both with and without fibres addition, as well as the relation between moisture loss and shrinkage caused by mortar drying process using a capacitive sensor of the authors’ own design. Two different mortar dosages 1:3 and 1:4 and three fiber types: polypropylene fiber, fiberglass and steel fiber, in different proportions were used. Obtained results show that the use of polypropylene fiber improves the recycled mortars performance against shrinkage in 0.2%. Moreover, a clear relation between dry shrinkage and moisture loss was observed.

An effective scheme to formulate high performance and multifunctional cement based mortar composites reinforced with varying lengths of carbon fibers has been devised. The detailed investigations pertaining to the fracture response of composites in cracks initiation and progression phases, their conducting mechanism and volumetric stability were performed with varying loads of 6mm and 12mm long carbon fibers at two different w/c ratios i.e. 0.45 and 0.50. The experiments concluded that an optimum addition of carbon fibers results in substantial improvement of fracture properties alongside significant reduction in electrical resistivity and total plastic shrinkage. The field emission scanning electron microscopy of the cryofractured specimen revealed crack arresting actions of uniformly distributed carbon fibers through successful crack bridging and branching phenomenon.

The temperature at which the alkaline activation process takes place is a significant factor in the evolution of the mechanical properties of coal ash cementitious base material. In this work, the influence of temperature (8 a 38 °C) and curing time (3 and 28 days) on the mechanical properties of the alkaline synthesis of two coal ashes was evaluated through the study of the mineralogical evolution of the cementitious phases by XRD and FTIR. We found that the type of zeolite, a synthesis product, depends on the study factors. For values above 28 °C and at least 7 days, alkalinely activated cements with compressive strength above 20 MPa were achieved. Other parameters, such as SiO2/Al2O3 ratio, percentage of unburned coal and particle-size distribution, should be taken into account in the variation of mechanical performance.

We evaluated the consolidating capacity of ethyl silicate in three types of bricks fired at 800, 950 and 1100 °C. We chose two concentrations of product, at 25% and 50%, diluting the product in white spirit to estimate whether greater dilution enables the product to penetrate deeper into the bricks, or whether a higher concentration leads to better consolidation of bricks. The application of ethyl silicate caused bricks porosity to decline and their compactness to increase. These changes were more accentuated as the concentration of the product increased. The pore size distribution not changed substantially except that there were fewer of the smallest pores. The color and the lightness of the pieces changed after application of the consolidant, albeit slightly. The durability of bricks improved as manifested by the results of the salt crystallization test. In general, the longest-lasting pieces were those treated with 25% ethyl silicate.

The effect of the extension of the curing period and exposure time to a chloride source on the transport of these ions has been studied in concrete with 100% Portland cement (OPC) and with ternary cement composed of 64% OPC, 30% blast furnace slag (BFS) and 6% limestone filler (LF). The extension of the curing time (from 28 to 90 days) did not significantly affect the transport, even in concretes with supplementary cementitious materials (SCM’s). The exposure time to the chloride source (3, 6 and 12 months) is a parameter which had a major influence on the transport. At least 6 months of exposure were necessary to achieve stable chloride diffusion coefficients with more noticeable stabilization occurring when SCM’s were used. The presence of BFS significantly decreased the transport, due to its ability to combine chloride rather than the refinement of capillary pores as a consequence of its late hydration.

This paper presents an experimental study on the behavior of cement stabilized rammed earth (CSRE) column reinforced with steel under axial loading and its comparison with unreinforced and bamboo reinforced columns. Effects of structural parameters such as tie / stirrup spacing on the failure pattern, lateral and axial deformation of columns are studied. Test results show that the load-capacity of columns increases with increase in lateral / tie reinforcement ratio. Maximum axial and lateral deformations occur in columns with least tie spacing. Behavior of CSRE columns reinforced with close tie spacing is characterized by gradual spalling of cover at the failure zone. Steel reinforced columns perform better than other column types in terms of load-capacity; hence it may be used as structural member adjacent to walls for low-rise rammed earth houses. Proposed reinforcement technique can be adopted in the field for enhancement of greater strength and performance of columns.

For some time the cement industry has been seeking procedures to effectively lower the higher energy costs involved in cement manufacture. Timahdit oil shale and Jerada coal waste could potentially be used as alternative raw materials to produce clinker. This study explored the possibility of applying those materials to a greener use, based on the reactivity and burnability of raw mixes containing Moroccan oil shale and coal waste. The findings showed that, irrespective of particle size, oil shale mixes delivered higher reactivity than coal waste materials, although reactivity was highest in the oil shale clinker with a particle size < 45 μm. The clinkers bearing oil shale with a particle size < 90 μm or a blend of oil shale and coal waste with a size < 45 μm contained higher proportions of alite ( > 70 %).

In this study, compressive and flexural strength, thermal properties, and pore structure of mortars modified with two types of boron waste and different amounts of CuO nanoparticles were investigated. The binders were prepared with 3% of borogypsum or borax waste and nano-CuO at concentration up to 4%. The setting time, compressive and flexural strength at 3, 7, and 28 days, DTA/TG, XRD, BET, and water absorption tests were carried out, and optimal nano-CuO percentages were determined. It was observed that nano-CuO addition in the range 2%–2.5% can improve mechanical properties, reduce the amount of unreacted portlandite, increase water absorption resistance, and decrease the setting time for borogypsum-containing mortars. The optimum nano-CuO replacement ratio changes between 0.5%–1% for borax waste-containing mortars. The results showed that nano-CuO was able to promote hydration reactions, act as a nanofiller, and provide a kernel for nucleation reactions.

Flat roofs are inverted when the insulation material is placed over the waterproofing membrane. This widely-used constructive system sets materials which may interact easily with each other causing their deterioration. The incompatibilities and the materials that may interact with each other are not completely described, the elements currently used to separate the materials are not totally efficient to avoid deterioration. This paper intends to enlarge the knowledge regarding the materials that are incompatible for inverted flat roofs, the conditions were interactions take place and the efficiency of some alternative solutions to separate the materials. The ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) waterproofing membranes are incompatible with the extruded polystyrene (XPS). The interactions between incompatible materials increase with the pressure.

The application of self-cleaning coatings presents one of the most effective ways to protect the surfaces of the building materials. The effect of TiO2/kaolin based coatings applied to three types of substrates: non-porous, porous and highly porous, was investigated. Mechanical activation was applied for the impregnation of the active TiO2 component (in content of 3 and 10 wt. %) into the kaolin support. Surface properties (roughness, hydrophilicity and micro-hardness) and functional properties (photocatalytic activity and self-cleaning efficiency) were studied in order to define the optimal formulation of the applied coatings. The effect of the photocatalytic behavior of the coated substrates in terms of self-cleaning ability was assessed by the photodegradation of Rhodamine B, performed before and after durability tests. The results obtained in this paper showed that photocatalytic activity of the TiO2/kaolin composite coating generally depends on the procedure of TiO2 impregnation into the kaolin clay and the loaded TiO2 content.

To investigate the behaviour of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) under combined compression and shear stresses, 75 hollow cylinder specimens prepared with various replacement ratios of recycled coarse aggregate (RCA) were tested with a self-designed loading device. The results showed that the failure pattern was similar for RAC with different replacement ratios of RCA. The ultimate shear stress improved with an increasing axial compression ratio of less than 0.6 and declined after exceeding 0.6. A modified failure criterion for RAC with normal strength under combined compression and shear stresses was proposed. A new procedure to predict the shear strength for RAC beams without stirrups was developed based on the proposed failure criterion, showing a better correlation with the experimental results than the predictions calculated by GB50010, Eurocode 2, fib Model Code 2010 and ACI 318-11.

The dispersion behavior of graphene oxide in cement matrix is one important factor in enhancing cement performance. In this work, we investigated the dispersion of graphene oxide in cement by simulating alkaline environment with a solution of calcium hydroxide and studied the corresponding strategy of improving dispersion. The obtained results showed that graphene oxide would flocculate even if calcium hydroxide concentration was very low, which might be the main reason of the unstable properties of the graphene oxide-doped cement. In addition, we discovered that, compared to -OH group, the -COOH group and the long chain of polycarboxylate-based superplasticizer were more effective in delaying the flocculation of graphene oxide. Finally, we proposed a dispersion mechanism of polycarboxylate-based superplasticizer. The study provides inspiration for the design of graphene oxide-doped cement materials.

This study explores the technological feasibility of using construction and demolition waste (C&DW) as recycled aggregate in alkali activated mortars, ascertaining the mechanical and microstructural behavior. Shrinkage behavior of alkali activated slag mortars (AAS) and fire resistance of alkali activated fly ash (AAFA) incorporating recycled aggregates have been also tested Normalized siliceous sand and two types of recycled concrete aggregates were used in the mixes at different proportions. The findings showed that water demand was higher in mortars prepared with recycled aggregate. Partial replacement (20% - 80/20) of conventional aggregate with the recycled material was also observed to yield mortars with high mechanical strength, although total porosity also rose. Total replaclement, gave worse mechanical performance however. Fire resistance and shrinkage studies conducted indicated that alkaline cement mortars prepared with 80/20 recycled aggregated exhibit acceptable performance.

Over the last 40 years different thermal energy storage materials have been investigated with the aim of enhancing energy efficiency in buildings, improving systems performance, and increasing the share of renewable energies. However, the main requirements for their efficient implementation are not fully met by most of them. This paper develops a comparative review of thermophysical properties of materials reported in the literature. The results show that the highest volumetric storage capacities for the best available sensible, latent and thermochemical storage materials are 250 MJ/m3, 514 MJ/m3 and 2000 MJ/m3, respectively, corresponding to water, barium hydroxide octahydrate, and magnesium chloride hexahydrate. A group of salt hydrates and inorganic eutectics have been identified as the most promising for the development of competitive thermal storage materials for cooling, heating and comfort applications in the short-term. In the long-term, thermochemical storage materials seem promising. However, additional research efforts are required.

The construction field has contributed to environmental degradation, producing a high amount of construction and demolition waste (C&D waste) and consuming large volumes of natural resources. In this context, recycled concrete (RC) has been recognised as a means to preserve natural resources and reduce space for waste storage. During the last decades, many researchers have developed works studying different recycled concrete properties. This review focuses on structural RC made with coarse recycled aggregate from concrete waste. The main objective is to provide a state of the art report on RC’s properties and an analysis on how to predict them taking into account relevant research works. Moreover, the study tries to collect and update RC findings, proposing equations to define RC’s performance, in terms of mechanical strength, modulus of elasticity, stress-strain, creep and shrinkage.

This research aimed to use of bagasse ash as a cement replacement in high-strength recycled aggregate concrete (HS-RAC). Crushed limestone was replaced with 100% recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) and the ground bagasse ash (GBA) was used to partially replace ordinary Portland cement (OPC) at 20, 35 and 50%wt of binder to cast HS-RAC. The results indicated that the replacing of crushed limestone with RCA had a negative impact on the properties of the concrete. Increasing the amount of GBA in HS-RAC resulted in a decrease in density and an increase in the volume of permeable pore space. The concrete mixtures prepared with 20%wt GBA replacement of OPC promoted greater the compressive strength than the conventional concrete (CT concrete) at 90 days or more. HS-RAC with GBA (up to 50%) was more durable in terms of chloride ion penetration resistance, although it had lower compressive strength than the CT concrete.

By mixing several binder materials and additions with different degrees of fineness, the packing density of the final product may be improved. In this work, ultrafine cement and silica fume mixes were studied to optimize the properties of cement-based materials. This research was performed in mortars made of two types of cement (ultrafine Portland cement and common Portland cement) and two types of silica fume with different particle-size distributions. Two Portland cement replacement ratios of 4% and 10% of silica fume were selected and added by means of a mechanical blending method. The results revealed that the effect of the finer silica fume mixed with the coarse cement enhances the mechanical properties and pore structure refinement at a later age. This improvement is somewhat lower in the case of ultrafine cement with silica fume.

Cracks in reinforced concrete elements can cause major durability issues due do the accelerated ingress of aggressive substances. In this study, repair of cracks was addressed by incorporating encapsulated polyurethane based healing agents in the cementitious material as an autonomous healing mechanism. Capillary sorption tests showed that a high viscosity healing agent could reduce the water ingress in cracked mortar, but a large scatter in the results was found, resulting in a large range of healing efficiencies (18 – 108%). The low viscosity polyurethane showed a more complete and consistent crack healing. Healing efficiencies ranging from 95 to 124% were observed (crack width up to 295 μm). The proposed healing mechanism is very effective in blocking the ingress of water. This will enhance the durability of cementitious materials and consequently extend their lifetime.

Portland cement (OPC) production is one of the most contaminating greenhouse gas producing activities. In order to reduce OPC consumption, several alternatives are being assessed, and the use of pozzolanic material is one of them. This paper presents study on the reactivity of sugarcane bagasse ash (SCBA), a residue from sugarcane industry, as a pozzolanic material. In order to evaluate SCBA reactivity, it was mixed in pastes with hydrated lime and OPC, which were microstructurally characterised. These studies showed that SCBA presents some pozzolanic characteristics. Studies on mortars in which OPC was replaced by SCBA in the range 10–30% were also carried out. Replacement in the range 15–20% yielded the best behaviour in terms of compressive strength. Finally, it can be concluded this ash could be valorised despite its relative low pozzolanic reactivity.

The aim of this study was determination of physical-chemical and radiological characteristics of kaolin and products of alkali-activated thermally treated kaolin (geopolymer). Also, the objective of presented research was to investigate the possibility of kaolin application as a pigment or as a raw material for obtaining geopolymer materials as a relatively new ones in a building material industry. Physicochemical characterization of one set of samples was conducted using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infra - red (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Activity concentration of naturally occurring radionuclides in kaolin, metakaolin and geopolymer were determined. The absorbed dose rate (D) and the annual effective dose rate (EDR), calculated in accordance with the UNSCEAR 2000 report, are also presented in this paper. Kaolin was heat-treated on 750oC and specific activity of natural radionuclide in metakaolin increased up to 1.6, while measured specific activities in geopolymer were the lowest.

This study investigates the magnesium sulphate resistance of chemically activated phosphorus slag-based composite cement (CAPSCC). Enough mortar specimens were prepared from phosphorus slag (80 wt.%), type II Portland cement (14 wt.%), and compound chemical activator (6 wt.%) and were exposed to 5% magnesium sulphate solution after being cured. Mortar specimens of both type II and V Portland cements (PC2 and PC5) were also prepared and used for comparison purpose. According to the test results, after 12 months of exposure, PC2, PC5 and CAPSCC exhibited 43.5, 35.2 and 25.2% reduction in compressive strength, 0.136, 0.110, and 0.026% expansion in length, and 0.91, 2.2, and 1.78% change in weight, respectively. Complementary studies by X-ray diffractometry and scanning electron microscopy revealed that CAPSCC has a very low potential for the formation of sulphate attack products, especially ettringite. The results confirm a high magnesium sulphate resistance for CAPSCC compared to PC2 and PC5.

Nowadays researchers are developing a new hybrid fiber reinforced cement-based composites (HyFRCC). The new HyFRCC can restrain micro-cracking, improves compressive and flexural performance of beams by addition of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) whisker, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fiber and steel fiber. In this work, a mix optimization procedure is shown for multi-scale HyFRCC, with steel, PVA fiber and CaCO3 whisker. The new HyFRCC is explored with addition of coarse sand to further improve its mechanical properties. Additionally, the flexural performance of beam and slabs has been investigated to optimize sand gradation and fiber combination in new HyFRCC. The compressive strength, flexural strength, flexural behavior, flexural toughness, equivalent flexural strength and deflection-hardening behavior of beams and slabs are improved with optimized content of sand gradation, fibers and CaCO3 whisker. The HyFRCC slab with 1.5% steel fiber, 0.4% PVA fiber, 1% CaCO3 whisker and optimized coarse sand showed overall best properties.

Water vapour permeability (WVP) is a key parameter for the sustainable thermal conditioning of buildings. The study of the WVP in concrete with supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) allows for the design of structures with improved durability and sustainability. To our knowledge, there is insufficient experimental data in the literature regarding the WVP of concrete with SCMs. WVP tests were made on concrete mixes containing ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBFS) and limestone powder (LP) as a partial replacement for ordinary Portland cement, and of concrete mixes containing pozzolanic cement (NP). Results from three moisture gradients show that GGBFS induces the greatest reduction in WVP, followed by the NP. LP shows a diluting effect of the binder, which could be compensated by GGBFS in the ternary blend. From the comparison between the WVP and the capillary sorption rate, the influence of the SCMs on the connectivity of the smallest pores is assessed.

The durability of the alkali-resistant (AR) glass fiber reinforced concrete (GFRC) in three simulated aggresive environments, namely tropical climate, cyclic air and seawater and seawater immersion was investigated. Durability examinations include chloride diffusion, gas permeability, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy examination (SEM). The fiber content is in the range of 0.6 % to 2.4 %. Results reveal that the specimen containing highest AR glass fiber content suffered severe strength loss in seawater environment and relatively milder strength loss under cyclic conditions. The permeability property was found to be more inferior with the increase in the fiber content of the concrete. This suggests that the AR glass fiber is not suitable for use as the fiber reinforcement in concrete is exposed to seawater. However, in both the tropical climate and cyclic wetting and drying, the incorporation of AR glass fiber prevents a drastic increase in permeability.

A statistical characterization of defects in 35 buildings and 98 wood floorings (softwood and hardwood floors, and laminated and engineered wood floors), their diagnostic methods and repair solutions is presented. An expert system for inspecting wood flooring, comprising the classification of defects, their most probable causes, diagnostic methods and repair techniques, was used. Results include age, affected area, severity and frequency of defects and their main causes, as well as appropriate diagnostic methods, preventive and curative repair solutions most prescribed and the most significant correlations. Scratches were detected in more than five sixths of the sample, highly associated with exterior mechanical actions, and with an inadequate finishing layer. Wearing of the finishing layer was detected in a quarter of the inspected floorings. Accordingly, the application of a suitable finishing layer and, alternatively, its replacement are the most prescribed repair techniques.

This paper concerns an experimental study of the influence of short glass-fibres randomly oriented of a reinforced cement-based composite on the mechanical behaviour. The matrix material parameters used are: cement/sand ratio and water/cement ratio fixed at 0.5; the glass-fibre content (0%, 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5%, 2% and 2.5%) and fibre lengths (3, 6 and 12 mm). Composites mechanical characterisation under static behaviour at flexural and compression tests, shows that the reinforcement effect is beneficial only in flexural case. A synergy (matrix-reinforcement) was observed when fibre length of 12 mm is used with application rate of 2% in flexural. The fatigue behaviour determined by Wöhler plots (stress-number of cycles to rupture), derived from experimental results; showed a large results dispersion which is attributed to many causes initiating this damage. The cyclic tests illustrate brittle character of these materials; even with low-amplitude cycles of loading no adaptation of these materials can be reported.

The compressive strength, flexural strength, porosity and electrical resistivity properties of cement mortars with nano-Fe2O3 and nano-SiO2 are studied. Amorphous silica is the main component of pozzolanic materials due to its reaction with calcium hydroxide formed from calcium silicate (C3S and C2S) hydration. The pozzolanic reaction rate is not only proportional to the amount of amorphous silica but also to the surface area available for reaction. Subsequently, fine nano-Fe2O3 and nano-SiO2 particles in mortars are expected to improve mortar performance. The experimental results showed that the compressive strength of mortars with nano-Fe2O3 and nano-SiO2 particles were lower than those obtained with the reference mortar at seven and 28 days. It was shown that the nano-particles were not able to enhance mechanical strength on every occasion. The continuous microstructural progress monitored by mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) measurements, pore-size distribution (PSD), total porosity and critical pore diameter also confirmed such results.

Self-compacting concrete has a characteristic microstructure inherent to its specific composition. The higher content of fine particles in self-compacting concrete relative to the equivalent vibrated concrete produces a different fracture behavior that affects the main fracture parameters. In this work, a comprehensive experimental investigation of the fracture behavior of self-compacting concrete has been carried out. Twelve different self-compacting concrete mixes with compressive strength ranging from 39 to 124 MPa (wider range than in other studies) have been subjected to three-point bending tests in order to determine the specific fracture energy. The influence of the mix design and its composition (coarse aggregate fraction, the water to binder ratio and the paste to solids ratio) on its fracture behavior has been analyzed. Moreover, further evidence of the objectivity of the size-independent fracture energy results, obtained by the two most commonly used methods, has been provided on the self-compacting concrete mixes.

Alkali activated materials (AAM) based on calcined metakaolin or illite clay together with waste by-products, such as waste glass or aluminium scrap recycling waste, were tested as value-added materials for pH stabilization in biogas technology where decrease of pH should be avoided. Porous materials with ability to slowly leach alkalis in the water media thus providing continuous control of the pH level were obtained. XRD, FTIR, SEM and titration methods were used to characterize AAM and their leaching properties. It is clear that composition of the material has an important effect on the diffusion of alkali from structure. Namely, higher Si/Al and Na/Al molar ratios may increase pore solution transfer to the leachate. The leaching rate of alkalis from the structure of AAM is high for the first few days, decreasing over time. It was possible to calculate the buffer capacity from the mixture design of AAM.

Microbial biodeposition of calcite induction for improving the performance of rammed earth is a research area that must be analysed in a representative environment. This analysis must consider the compaction force, particle size distribution and curing process as production variables. This paper investigates the effects of adding specific bacteria, Sporosarcina Pasteurii, into compressed earth cubes and the effect of production variables. Uniaxial compressive tests and direct shear tests have been conducted for 80 specimens. The results indicate that calcite precipitation interacts with the drying process of clay/silt resulting in reducing the compressive strength, the apparent cohesion and the friction angle. Finally, bacterial activity, which is more likely in samples cured in a high humidity environment, tends to reduce the dilatancy effect.

This study investigated the effects of the addition of untreated sugarcane bagasse ash (UtSCBA) on the microstructural and mechanical properties of mortars. The SCBA was sieved for only five minutes through a No. 200 ASTM mesh, and fully characterized by chemical composition analysis, laser ray diffraction, the physical absorption of gas, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. Mortar mixtures with 0, 10 and 20% UtSCBA as cement replacement and a constant 0.63 water/cementitious material ratio were prepared. Fresh properties of the mortars were obtained. The microstructural characteristics of the mortars at 1, 7, 28, 90 and 600 days were evaluated by SEM and XRD. The compressive strengths of the mortars at the same ages were then obtained. The results show that the addition of 10 and 20% UtSCBA caused a slight decrease in workability of the mortars but improved their microstructure, increasing the long-term compressive strength.

Las capas de rodadura son las más expuestas al clima y al efecto del tráfico, especialmente en carreteras sometidas a mantenimiento invernal. Por este motivo, es importante conocer mejor los mecanismos de deterioro de dichas capas a la hora de mejorar su diseño, construcción y uso a largo plazo. Con este fin, dos tipos de mezclas asfálticas utilizadas en el NO de España fueron expuestas a ensayos de durabilidad (heladicidad y choque térmico) con una solución saturada de NaCl. Después, se realizó el ensayo de pista y el material deteriorado y deformado resultante fue analizado mediante microscopia óptica de luz polarizada y de fluorescencia. Dicho análisis mostró que el principal responsable de la degradación de la mezcla fue la baja adhesión árido-betún. Esta degradación se concentró en el árido debido a que el ligante actuó como una pared impermeable. En consecuencia, la solución de NaCl pudo penetrar y degradar rápida e intensamente el árido.

The aim of this study is the preparation of β-belite by a solid-state reaction using powdered limestone, amorphous silica and liquid alkali silicates. The raw materials were blended, the mixtures were agglomerated and then burnt. The resulting samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis and scanning electron microscopy. Free lime content in the β-belite samples was also determined. The effects of CaO/SiO2 ratio (1.6–2.1), burning temperature (800–1400 °C), utilization of different raw materials (silica fume, synthetic silica, potassium silicate, sodium silicate, potassium hydroxide) and burning time (0.5–16 h) on free lime content and mineralogical composition were investigated. The purest ?-belite samples were prepared from a mixture of powdered limestone, silica fume and liquid potassium silicate with a ratio CaO/SiO2 = 2 by burning at temperatures between 1100 and 1300 °C for more than 2 h. Decreasing of the CaO/SiO2 ratio led to rankinite formation and lower a burning temperature led to the formation of wollastonite.

The utilization of lightweight oil palm shell to produce high strength lightweight sustainable material has led many researchers towards its commercialization as structural concrete. However, the low tensile strength of Oil Palm Shell Concrete (OPSC) has hindered its development. This study aims to enhance the mechanical properties and flexural behaviours of OPSC by the addition of steel fibres of up to 3% by volume, to produce oil palm shell fibre-reinforced concrete (OPSFRC). The experimental results showed that the steel fibres significantly enhanced the mechanical properties of OPSFRC. The highest compressive strength, splitting tensile and flexural strengths of 55, 11.0 and 18.5 MPa, respectively, were achieved in the OPSFRC mix reinforced with 3% steel fibres. In addition, the flexural beam testing on OPSFRC beams with 3% steel fibres showed that the steel fibre reinforcement up to 3% produced notable increments in the moment capacity and crack resistance of OPSFRC beams, but accompanied by reduction in the ductility.
