The unprecedented growth in the illegal wildlife trade has created a serious challenge for conservation in Africa. Governments around the world often create entities to protect species and preserve biodiversity in their respective countries. Despite numerous interventions to conserve the world’s threatened rhino populations and reduce incidents of rhino poaching, poaching of the world’s rhino populations continue, especially in South Africa. Descriptive and inferential statistics are used to analyze and compare rhino-related disclosures with rhino poaching trends, to identify possible correlations between incidents of rhino poaching and rhino-related, and to establish differences between the periods between 2006 to 2015 (covered in Ackers, 2019) and the subsequent period from 2016 to 2021. Unlike the period from 2006 to 2015 where several rhino-related keywords were strongly correlated with rhino poaching incidents, no correlations were detected from 2016 to 2021. Although incidents of rhino poaching decreased, SANParks appear to have strategically increased its anti-poaching advocacy by retaining high levels of disclosures about rhino-related issues, demonstrating how it has discharged its biodiversity-related mandate. Using the same mixed-methods research approach and similar data, this paper extends the Ackers (2019) study, which examined how South African National Parks (SANParks), by including the disclosures from 2016 to 2021.

This paper presents the strategy adopted by the Instituto de Investigação Científica Tropical (Tropical Research Institute), in Lisbon, to access and conserve the natural history collections under its care, specifically fluid-preserved zoological and botanical collections, through the creation and implementation of the interdisciplinary project "Promotion of Tropical Knowledge". We discuss key issues and planned interventions, taking into account the need to preserve the chemical structure and the morphology of the specimens in the best possible way. The article focuses on the importance of maintaining the integrity of the containers which house the specimens and the fluid composition and its appropriate levels, creating a protective microenvironment around the specimens. Reference is also made to the importance of computer processing of collections, allowing its availability to the scientific community and acting as a form of long term preservation, since this means of safeguarding information may last even longer than the specimens themselves.

The relationship of indigenous peoples to the global market is a reality and it sets strategies of appropriation of traditional knowledge, without any rule mediating the restitution of rights that knowledge holders have, while indigenous people are asking a sui generis system for protection and equitable participation in these markets. The paper presents the results of a participatory research carried out with Ticuna communities of the south of the Colombian Amazon, in the border with Brazil and Peru, in the upper part of the Amazon River. From the knowledge about the use and management of chagra agriculture, the research analyzes how the productive chain of manioc (Manihot esculenta Crantz) is structured. It also explains how indigenous people discuss the intellectual property rights they have on it, and how the geographical indications and the collective trademarks can help to protect traditional knowledge associated to biodiversity.

It is increasingly recognized that maintaining biodiversity is of fundamental importance toward sustaining human livelihoods. One of the major assets of the region identified as “Latin America and the Caribbean” (LAC) is its biological wealth; by extension, the continued biodiversity loss of the LAC region is seen as one of the world’s principal environmental problems. The marine resources of Caribbean Sea are of vital economic, ecological and social importance to the LAC region, and are under particular threat. Marine turtles play vital roles throughout the Caribbean Sea both in terms of ecological functions and human welfare. Conservation efforts in this direction can often depend on the ability to place a value on welfare changes associated with the loss of ecosystem goods and services into which biodiversity plays an integral role.Using the ecosystem service categories of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, this paper discusses from an inter-disciplinary perspective the methodologies associated with linking marine turtles, ecosystem services and human welfare. While the main economic benefit to be currently valued may stem from the eco-tourism potential surrounding turtle nesting sites, for a true picture of the environmental resources upon which this service depends, it is necessary to also identify the other provisioning, regulating and cultural services of the resource. In this way, human welfare impacts can be more truly judged, and effective resource management can be undertaken.

The paper focuses on investigation of the importance of nature and development of tourism in protected areas. Therefore, in this context a new challenge is emerging: the need to conserve and protect bio and geo diversity, as well as the economic valorisation of these areas based mainly on tourism and leisure. At EU level, Natura 2000 protected areas have developed, implemented and cultivated the need to practice sport and recreational activities in these areas both for spending leisure time and also as stress antidote. The recreational and sporting practices that can be undertaken within the ecological network Natura 2000 sites adapted to the specificity of each protected area, in close connection with the environmental conditions. For the preservation of the natural environment should develop and maintain a close collaboration with tourism and sports associations that organize such activities in those areas.

Vision tourism in protected areas is one of the activities of valorization and management of these ecosystems. However, wildlife observation tourism can contribute to tarnishing the image of the protected area to the extent that the circuits offered to customers do not meet its expectations. Thus, scientific tools to obtain reliable information on tourist circuits of a protected area can contribute to the reliable planning of ecotourism activities in these protected ecosystems. For this purpose, this paper presents a methodological approach for assessing the capacity of ecotourism circuits in a protected area, to meet the expectations of ecotourists in relation to the observations of large and medium wild mammals found there. In this approach, the essential parameters to be considered in the evaluation of the circuits were presented. They are mainly the probability of observation, the diversity of observation and the recurrence of observation. The application of this methodological approach in the Oti-Kéran-Mandouri (OKM) complex, has shown that the present state of this complex is poorly adapted for the promotion of vision tourism of large and medium mammals.

Ecotourism is playing an increasingly important global role in reconciling biodiversity conservation with socio-economic development. Although ecotourism is often pointed to be instrumental to conservation, some scientific literature asserts that it rather allows capitalism to identify, open and colonize new spaces. In Québec, ecotourism appears on the political agenda of the State in the wake of the International Year of Ecotourism proclaimed in 2002. Several stakeholders have mobilized since then and present it as a strategy for sustainable development. Based on a critical approach, this paper presents the conditions for the emergence of ecotourism in Québec and the reasons that encourage social, political and economic stakeholders to choose to highlight biodiversity through and for ecotourism. This approach makes it possible to identify specificities, tensions and issues specific to Québec, but which echo what is observed elsewhere in the world.
