This qualitative and quantitative action-research consists of the design, planning and execution of a program of activities to encourage reading of children in the 3rd and 4th grades of elementary school at the Japan School in the municipality of La Serena. The set of activities to encourage reading is part of the pedagogical management area developed by the CRA School Library of the educational establishment. In addition, this intervention is coordinated with the pedagogical practices of the teaching team in the language area. A plan of 08 activities to encourage reading is designed, to be carried out in 08 sessions with a duration of 45 to 90 minutes each. This program has a playful and dynamic approach that allows the development of the habit and the permanent taste of reading. This paper develops a solid referential framework that provides the theoretical foundations that explain the concept of reading habits and reading encouragement. The results are analyzed based on direct observation of the students' reading behavior and according to a statistical analysis of the borrowing and resultation of bibliographic material by users of the CRA A School Library before after having received the reading promotion intervention.
