In the paper, the authors compared pen-and-ink drawings (scribal initials) and illuminations of selected initials included in two incunabula of the same title coming from one printing workshop (Petrus Drach - Missale Cartusiense, 1496), which appeared together at the same point of time in the SNL restoration workplace. However, the colour rendering of the illuminated initials is significantly diff erent and can clarify the more than 500-year history of these two early printed documents from the time and place of their origins to the time when they reached the current owners. Each incunabulum thus becomes an original item and raises further questions related to the place where the documents were used and stored as well as the purpose of the drawn and painted illuminations (monastery, scriptorium). These inevitably include diff erences caused by the intensity of use and the extent of bookbinding damage, as well as the completeness and integrity of book blocks. Previous attempts to restore the early printed documents could be also seen as an encroachment on their identities. As far as texts are concerned, the authors have been primarily interested in specific features and unique internal decoration. The basis for this paper was the final bachelor's thesis written by Zuzana Poništová and entitled Farbivá v dejinách výtvarného prejavu človeka [Dyes in the History of Human Artistic Expression], which was defended in 2009. The authors supplemented this basic material with their own observations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
