This article deals with a possibility to conceive the internality/externality dimension in explaining unemployment as two independent attribution characteristics. Based on factor analysis of possible causes of unemployment, the internal and external cause-explanation factors were identified, which allow to define four types of unemployed people: 1. moderate (low internal and external factor); 2. external; 3. internal; 4. ambivalent (high level of both external and internal factors). Correlation between the length of unemployment and the explanation of unemployment causes showed that the long-term unemployed people tend to perceive both external and internal factors as more serious. From the methodological standpoint, it is meaningful to examine both internal and external factors since it offers a more differentiated overview on the dynamics of causal attributions. The most risky type of an unemployed person is the one with ambivalent attributions, accenting hopelessness of the situation, vicious circle of self-blaming and blaming of social conditions.
