1. Verapamil administration alleviates microcytosis and tissue accumulation after chronic aluminum exposure in rats

Abstract

Introduction/Objective. Research has demonstrated the toxicant potential of aluminum, but no therapeutic options have been suggested. The aim of the study was to investigate the extent of the aluminuminduced toxicity, evaluated by hematological/biochemical disarrangements, hepcidin concentration and tissue accumulation after chronic aluminum exposure and to determine possible protection with Ca2+-channel blockage, verapamil. Methods. Experimental animals (36 rats) were treated with different doses of AlCl3 during eight weeks and after that their blood and tissues were analyzed. Results. The significant differences, regardless of the aluminum dose administered, were documented in all evaluated hematological (p < 0.001) and biochemical parameters (p < 0.001), as well as in aluminum tissue deposition in liver, kidneys and testicles (p < 0.001), respectively. After verapamil administration, a significant improvement in some hematological and biochemical parameters was demonstrated, p < 0.001, as well as the attenuation of aluminum deposits in liver and testes, p < 0.001. Evaluated parameters of inflammation and kidney deposition did not show significant change after verapamil application. Conclusion. The findings indicate that chronic AlCl3 intoxication, regardless of the dose, results in the microcytic anemia associated with high hepcidin levels, numerous biochemical abnormalities and significant aluminum deposition in liver, kidney and testes and that these effects may be attenuated by verapamil administration. Overall, the results emphasize the significance of calcium homeostasis preservation in chronic aluminum exposure and propose possible therapeutic option.

Abstract

In this paper, the author analyzes the protection of the right to privacy under Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) at the time of the Covid-19 virus pandemic. At the beginning of the pandemic, European countries had a large number of infected people and some countries encountered a collapse of their health systems. As the situation was beyond control, it raises the question whether such a situation was caused by the non-implementation of epidemiological monitoring measures, which is comparable to the extent and manner of implementing these measures in the Far East; namely, the question is whether the democratic system remained unprotected due to the EU countries' observance of democratic human rights standards, specifically the right to privacy. Given that epidemiological monitoring measures are currently the most important instrument for combating the Covid-19 virus pandemic, European countries have to fulfill the condition of legality in implementing these measures, which interfere with the citizens' right to privacy. In that context, the author explores the case law of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR), which ensures judicial protection of the rights guaranteed by the Convention (including the right to private life), focuses on the definition of the concept of the right to privacy, and examines whether epidemiological monitoring measures fall into the corpus of privacy rights. Relying on a detailed analysis of the ECtHR case law, the author points to the specific requirements that must be met in order for the epidemiological monitoring measures to be considered legal.

3. Valorization of cultural tourist values of the city core of Niš according to the Hilary Du Cros Model

Abstract

Cultural tourism integrates the culture and tourism sector, whereby mutual benefits can be achieved. In order to reflect favorable conditions in both sectors, it is necessary to approach the planning and transformation of cultural and historical heritage into a cultural-tourist product. The initial phase in planning is the valorization of cultural tourist values. Hilary Du Cros Model was created especially for the valorization of cultural tourist values. The model is complex because it evaluates the cultural-tourist sub-indicators and the degree of their gradation, separately for the tourism sector and the sector of heritage asset management. The aim of the paper is to evaluate the tourism sector and the sector of the management of representative cultural assets of the city core of Niš according to the Model Hilary Du Cros. After the analysis of sub-indicators, the city core of Niš was awarded a cell M (2,3), which points to favorable conditions for the development of cultural tourism, but it is necessary to approach more responsible planning of cultural tourist values. Cilj ove teze bio je da se ispita dobijanje novih dezinficijenasa na bazi dve vrste zeolita: prirodnog klinoptilolita i zeolita A koji predstavljaju prihvatljive sirovine sa ekološkog i ekonomskog stanovišta. Ovi zeoliti su obogaćeni katjonima Ni, Cu, Zn i Ag u različitim koncentracijama i antibakterijska aktivnost dobijenih proizvoda ispitana je u odnosu na Gram-negativne (Escherichia coli i Acinetobacter baumannii) i Grampozitivne vrste bakterije (Staphylococcus aureus)... The aim of this thesis was to study preparation of novel disinfectants based on two types of zeolite: natural clinoptilolite and synthetic zeolite A which both present environmental as well as cost efficient materials. These zeolites were enriched with cations of Ni, Cu, Zn and Ag in different concentrations, and their antibacterial activity was investigated toward Gram-negative (Escherichia coli i Acinetobacter baumannii) and Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus)...

5. Ispitivanje adsorpcionih svojstava elektrofilterskog pepela sa deponije termoelektrane 'Moravaˮ u odnosu na fosfat-jone prisutne u rastvoru

Abstract

In this study we prepared adsorbents on the basis of clinoptilolite-rich zeolitic tuff (Slanci deposit, Beograd), and chitosan, as well as partially cross-linked chitosan by glutaraldehyde. We investigated removal rate of nickel and zinc ions from the aqueous solution by both adsorbents at 25 °C, adsorption isotherms, adsorption kinetics, regeneration of spent adsorbents and their antibacterial activity. Removal rate of both adsorbents for both studied cations was significantly increased in comparison to unmodified clinoptilolite. The adsorption isotherm for Ni (II) followed the Langmuir model, while isotherm for Zn was in accord with the the Freundlich equation. Adsorption kinetics followed the Lagergren pseudo-second order kinetic model for both adsorbents and cations. The adsorbents can be regenerated to a large extent after use. Unlike unmodified clinoptilolite-based adsorbents, spent adsorbents did not show antibacterial activity. This was ascribed to interactions between chitosan coating and clinoptilolite. U radu su pripremljeni adsorbensi na bazi zeolitskog tufa bogatog klinoptilolitom (ležište Slanci, Beograd) i hitozana, kao i hitozana koji je delimično umrežen glutaraldehidom. Ispitana je efikasnost uklanjanja jona nikla i cinka iz vodenog rastvora pomoću oba adsorbensa na 25 oC, adsorpcione izoterme, kinetika adsorpcije, regeneracija istrošenih adsorbenasa i njihova antibakterijska aktivnost. Efikasnost uklanjanja oba ispitivana katjona značajno se povećava nakon modifikacije. Adsorpciona izoterma Ni(II) sledi Langmirovu, dok Zn(II) Frojndlihovu izotermu. Kinetika adsorpcije odgovara Lagergrenovom modelu pseudodrugog reda. Oba adsorbensa se mogu u velikom stepenu regenerisati nakon upotrebe. Istrošeni adsorbensi, za razliku od nemodifikovanog klinotpilolita, ne pokazuju antibakterijsku aktivnost. Ovo je pripisano interakcijama hitozana sa klinoptilolitom

6. Antibakterijska aktivnost prirodnog zeolita i mogućnost primene u tercijarnoj obradi otpadne vode

Abstract

Postupci za uklanjanje teških metala iz otpadnih voda predmet su mnogih istraživanja s obzirom na štetne efekte koje teški metali izazivaju po životnu sredinu. Joni teških metala nisu biodegradabilni i imaju svojstvo da se akumuliraju u živim organizmima izazivajući toksične efekte. Proces sorpcije danas se smatra jednim od najpogodnijih postupaka za uklanjanje jona teških metala iz otpadnih voda, a prirodni minerali smatraju se vrlo pogodnim sorbentima. Zeoliti su jedan od mineralnih resursa R. Srbije koji nije iskorišćen u meri koju zaslužuje. U pitanju je mineral velikog adsorpcionog kapaciteta, velike specifične površine, netoksičan i sa gledišta životne sredine prihvatljiv u svakom pogledu. Prirodni zeolit iz rudnika Zlatokop (Vranjska Banja) u svojoj kristalnoj rešetki sadrži jone natrijuma, magnezijuma i kalcijuma koji nisu štetni po životnu sredinu, a lako se mogu izmeniti štetnim katjonima iz vodenog rastvora. Naša prethodna ispitivanja pokazala su da prirodni zeolitni tuf iz rudnika Zlatokop ima veliki kapacitet vezivanja jona Ni(II), Cu(II) i Zn(II) iz vodenih rastvora. Rezultati saopšteni u ovom radu pokazaće da nakon što postane obogaćen ovim jonima, istrošeni zeolitni tuf može da se dalje koristi jer ispoljava antibakterijsku aktivnost. U radu je ispitana antibakterijska aktivnost zeolitnog tufa koji sadrži (mas.%) - 2, 60 Cu(II), 1, 47 Zn(II) ili 0, 52 Ni(II) u odnosu na Escherichia coli i Staphylococcus aureus nakon 1 i 24 h kontakta zeolita u tri vodena medijuma: Luria Bertani, sintetičke otpadne vode i realnog sekundarnog efluenta. Utvrđeno je da zeolitni tuf obogaćen bakrom i cinkom pokazuje odličnu antibakterijsku aktivnost, jer smanjuje broj bakterija za šest redova veličine u sekundarnom efluentu. Pri tome, ne dolazi do izluživanja toksičnih Cu(II)- i Zn(II)-jona u vodeni rastvor. Zeolitni tuf obogaćen Ni(II)-jonima ispoljava najslabiju antibakterijsku aktivnost i nije pogodan kao dezinficijens. Osim slabe antibakterijske aktivnosti, u slučaju ovog uzorka dolazi do izluživanja Ni(II)-jona u vodeni rastvor.
