Essential oils are widely used in medicine, dentistry and cosmetology as flavour and odour corrigents in various substances for oral hygiene. The aim of this study was to present comprehensively the possibilities for application of Melaleuca Alternifolia essential oil in dentistry based on the analysis of contemporary scientific and professional publications. The application of Tea tree essential oil in the treatment of periodontal, fungal and viral diseases is very efficient. The study of antimicrobial potential of ten different essential oils confirmed the efficiency of Tea tree oil against numerous Gram+ and Gram- bacteria. In vitro studies of bacteriostatic, bactericidal and fungicidal effect of Tea tree oil solution against ten different microorganisms confirmed sensitivity of the following microorganisms: Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans, Fusobacterium nucleatum and Porphyromonas gingivalis, and slightly weaker effect against Streptococcus Mutans and Prevotella intermedia. Tea tree is very effective in the treatment of various diseases and is an introduction and momentum for the application of plant substances in the treatment of numerous diseases in dentistry. .

Introduction: A non-carious lesion (NCL) is the loss of hard dental tissue on the neck, tuberculum and incisal edges of the teeth. Interest in clinical presence and in unclear etiology of these lesions allows for their future prevention and treatment., Objective: The aim of the study was to determine presence and clinical characteristics of NCLs and dentine hypersensitivity (DH), as well as their possible risk factors in children, in the population of the city of Novi Sad., Methods: A total of 55 subjects were included in the present study, aged between three and 18 years. Each subject completed a structured questionnaire related to the etiological factors, and all teeth of each subject were examined by two independent clinical dentists to determine NCLs and DH. In the case of small children, their parents or guardians filled out the questionnaire. Teeth with NCLs and DH were diagnosed according to the Basic Erosive Wear Examination (BEWE) index and by a blast of air according to Schiff and Hypersensitivity Index. The review was carried out by inspection and probing., Results: The data were analyzed by clinical examination and comparison of the answers to the questionnaires. We observed an increased presence of non-caries lesions on primary teeth, compared to permanent teeth, with a statistically significant difference (X2=3.86, df=1, p=0.04). The changes were observed in 82 teeth, and were most frequent on the canine deciduous teeth (65%) and canine permanent teeth (51%). BEWE index was 10-11% to 92-100% in permanent, and 51-57% in deciduous teeth. Majority of patients with primary teeth (89.36%) did not respond to air stimulus, while most patients with permanent teeth (74.29%) did not react to Schiff Index. In the estimate of sensitivity, the respondents reported hypersensitivity on 6.38% of the deciduous teeth and 22.86% of the permanent teeth. Comparison of etiology factors did not reveal a direct link with the appearance of NCLs., Conclusion: Research has shown that despite the lack of subjective symptoms, these lesions have distinct clinical characteristics. The fact that they occur even in deciduous dentition justifies the need for further investigations.

Introduction: It has been suggested that asthmatic patients may have a higher risk for oral diseases, both as a result of the medical condition and effects of medications., Objective: The aim of the study was to determine the oral health status of children with asthma and to evaluate the oral health parameters according to the medications and severity of the disease., Methods: The study group consisted of 158 children with asthma and 100 healthy control subjects aged 2-18 years. The diagnosis of dental caries was performed using the Decayed, Missing, and Filled Teeth (DMFT/dmft) criteria. The oral hygiene, periodontal status and gingival health were assessed with the Simplified Oral Hygiene Index (Greene-Vermillion), Community Periodontal Index of Treatment Needs and Gingival Index (Löe-Silness), respectively., Results: Thirty (19%) patients with asthma and 43 (43%) healthy children were caries-free (p<0.001). There were no significant differences between asthmatic and control children in caries experience (for children with asthma mean DMFT=2.1±1.8, mean dmft=4.2±3.3; for healthy children mean DMFT=2.5±0.9, mean dmft=5.2±1.3). Level of asthma control did not have influence on dental health, while dose of inhaled corticosteroid had impact on primary dentition. Periodontal status and gingival health did not differ between asthmatic and control children. However, children with asthma had poorer oral hygiene (p<0.001)., Conclusion: Results of the study do not show a relationship between asthma and oral diseases. However, further improvement could be made in educating children and parents on the importance of good oral hygiene and prevention of oral diseases.

Introduction: Periodontitis is a destructive inflammatory disease of the tooth-supporting tissues, primarily caused by Gram-negative microorganisms. Thus, the primary objective of cause-related initial periodontal therapy is disruption and removal of the subgingival biofilm., Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical and microbiological effects of the initial therapy in patients diagnosed with chronic periodontitis., Methods: Forty patients with chronic periodontitis were included in the study. As a part of the clinical assessment undertaken prior to the initial therapy, as well as one month and three months post-therapy, plaque index, gingival index, papilla bleeding index, probing pocket depth and clinical attachment level were recorded. Microbiological testing was performed prior to the initial therapy and three months after therapy. Polymerase chain reaction assays were used to determine the presence of Porphyromonas gingivalis, Tannerella forsythensis, Prevotella intermedia and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans., Results: All clinical parameters were significantly reduced after therapy. The prevalence of Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans was reduced by 22.5%, which was a statistically significant decrease compared to the baseline. The prevalence of Porphyromonas gingivalis, Tannerella forsythensis and Prevotella intermedia tended to decrease after therapy; however, the difference did not reach statistical significance., Conclusion: The results of the present study demonstrated the beneficial effects of the initial periodontal therapy on both the clinical and microbiological parameters.

Introduction: Comprehensive epidemiological data regarding factors associated with traumatic dental injuries are scarce., Objective: The aim of the present study was to assess the frequency and analyze the factors associated with traumatic dental injuries in Serbian children., Methods: Research included children and adolescents with traumatic dental injury aged 0-19 year during the period from 2003 to 2010, in four University Dental Centres in Serbia: Belgrade, Nis, Novi Sad and Kragujevac. Patient history, demographic, clinical and radiographic data were obtained from dental trauma forms., Results: Total of 2,194 patients (748 girls, 1,446 boys) (chi2 = 222.1; p < 0.01) with 3,077 injured teeth in permanent and 953 in primary dentition were observed. Most of patients were aged 7 to 12 years (n = 1,191). The most frequent injuries in primary and permanent dentition were dislocations (87.4%) and teeth fractures (50.8%), respectively (chi2 = 706.1; p < 0.01). The most frequent mechanism of injury was fall in children aged 0 to 12 years, while the collisions were most frequent in adolescents (53.9%). The most frequent injuries in adolescents were inflicted outdoor (66.8%), while the injuries in children aged 0 to 3 years occurred at home (68.2%), (chi2 = 360.8; p < 0.01). The most frequent injuries in girls were accidental (48.3%), and in boys these were sport injuries (20.4%) and violence (10.4%) (chi2 = 79.9; p < 0.01). The most frequent cause of injury in children aged 0 to 3 years was accidental (75.6%), while in adolescents it was sport (34.1%) (chi2 = 1102.7; p < 0.01)., Conclusion: Dental injuries in preschool children most frequently resulted from fall at home. Schoolchildren most frequently injured teeth outdoor during play. Violence and sport injuries were most frequent cause of injury in adolescents.

Introduction: Anaesthesia affects kidney function by reducing the renal blood flow and glomerular filtration rate. As chronic renal failure (CRF) significantly influences drug metabolism and elimination, we studied the effects of rocuronium bromide (RB) in patients with CRF., Objective: The aim of the study was to examine whether, when using RB in patients with CFR, there are differences regarding the onset time of neuromuscular block (NMB) development, duration time, speed of recovery and cumulative effects of RB., Methods: Prospective study included 60 patients who underwent urologic surgery procedures. The patients were divided into 3 groups: the first group (G1)--20 patients with CRF and residual dieresis, the second group (G2)--20 patients with CRF and without dieresis, and third group (G3)--20 patients with normal renal function (control group). During surgery RB was administrated for muscle paralysis in all patients. Train-of-four (TOF) Guard acceleromyography was used for NMB monitoring., Results: Onset time in three groups was 132.3 s; 139.5 s and 113.2 s (p < 0.01). Duration of intubation dose was the same in G1 and G2 (28.9 minutes), while in the third group it was 27.2 minutes (p > 0.05).The number of RB repeated doses was 3-8, 3-7 and 4-8 (p > 0.05). The duration time until spontaneous recovery was 31.8, 31.6 and 29.8 minutes (p > 0.01). The recovery index was 16.8,16.7 and 10.6 minutes (p < 0.001). The duration time from the last dose of RB to extubation was 74.5, 74.8 and 58.9 minutes (p < 0.001)., Conclusion: In patients with CRF the cumulative effect of the drug was registered, with a prolonged recovery time from NMB in relation to the patients with normal renal function.

Introduction: The mathematical model of the abutment tooth is the starting point of the finite element analysis of stress and deformation of dental structures. The simplest and easiest way is to form a model according to the literature data of dimensions and morphological characteristics of teeth. Our method is based on forming 3D models using standard geometrical forms (objects) in programmes for solid modeling., Objective: Forming the mathematical model of abutment of the second upper premolar for finite element analysis of stress and deformation of dental structures., Methods: The abutment tooth has a form of a complex geometric object. It is suitable for modeling in programs for solid modeling SolidWorks. After analysing the literature data about the morphological characteristics of teeth, we started the modeling dividing the tooth (complex geometric body) into simple geometric bodies (cylinder, cone, pyramid,...). Connecting simple geometric bodies together or substricting bodies from the basic body, we formed complex geometric body, tooth. The model is then transferred into Abaqus, a computational programme for finite element analysis. Transferring the data was done by standard file format for transferring 3D models ACIS SAT., Results: Using the programme for solid modeling SolidWorks, we developed three models of abutment of the second maxillary premolar: the model of the intact abutment, the model of the endodontically treated tooth with two remaining cavity walls and the model of the endodontically treated tooth with two remaining walls and inserted post., Conclusion: Mathematical models of the abutment made according to the literature data are very similar with the real abutment and the simplifications are minimal. These models enable calculations of stress and deformation of the dental structures. The finite element analysis provides useful information in understanding biomechanical problems and gives guidance for clinical research.

Introduction: Although muscle relaxants have been widely used to facilitate endotracheal intubation, the administration of these drugs in myasthenic patients may be associated with adverse events., Material and Methods: After obtaining Institutional Reviewing Board approval and informed, patient consent, 30 patients with myasthenia gravis were enrolled in a prospective, double-blind, randomized clinical trial. We compared intubating conditions (ease of laryngoscopy, vocal cords, cough, jaw relaxation, limb movement) following fentanyl 2 mg/kg and propofol 2 mg/kg (group PRO, n = 15) vs fentanyl 2 mg/kg and sevoflurane 5% in a 1:2 mixture of oxygen and nitrous oxide (group SEVO, n = 15). The statistical analysis was performed using Student's t test and Chi-quadrate test, p < 0.05 being regarded as significant., Results: The overall intubating conditions were excellent in 67% of patients in the group PRO vs 80% of patients in the group SEVO (p > 0.05). One patient in each group had clinically unacceptable conditions for intubation. The mean intubation score was 5.7 +/- 1.0 in the group PRO vs 5.9 +/- 0.9 in the group SEVO (p > 0.05). Three patients receiving propofol and one patient receiving sevoflurane had mild hoarseness after the surgery (p > 0.05)., Conclusion: Both propofol and sevoflurane, supplemented with fentanyl, provide good intubating conditions without the use of muscle relaxants in patients with myasthenia gravis.

Careful assessment of the fluid balance is required in the perioperative period since appropriate fluid therapy is essential for successful patient's outcome. Haemodynamic monitoring allows understanding the physiology of the circulation and changes of fluid balance in the perioperative period. This is diagnostic aid and guide for fluid replacement therapy. Patient's volume status is frequently assessed by different haemodynamic variables that could be targeted as the endpoints for fluid therapy and resuscitation. Fluid balance is the crucial factor in the maintenance of haemodynamic stability, tissue oxygenation and organ function. When the haemodynamic monitoring is applied in a rigorous and consistent manner, it reduces mortality and length of stay as well as costs incurred. There are a number of tests which describe the effectiveness of the invasive haemodynamic monitoring procedures usage. Since the pulmonary artery catheter (PAC) had been introduced into clinical practice it was considered as a golden standard for cardiac output measurements, haemodynamic and fluid balance assessment. Nevertheless, in previous 10 years new minimally invasive and noninvasive simple techniques for haemodynamic monitoring and patient's hydroelectricity status evaluation have been developed. They can replace PAC under different clinical circumstances and some of these techniques

Introduction: Endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) has been introduced into clinical practice at the beginning of the 90's of the last century. Because of economic, political and social problems during the last 25 years, the introduction of this procedure in Serbia was not possible., Objective: The aim of this study was to present preliminary experiences and results of the Clinic for Vascular Surgery of the Serbian Clinical Centre in Belgrade in endovascular treatment of thoracic and abdominal aortic aneurysms., Methods: The procedure was performed in 33 patients (3 female and 30 male), aged from 42 to 83 years. Ten patients had a descending thoracic aorta aneurysm (three atherosclerotic, four traumatic--three chronic and one acute as a part of polytrauma, one dissected, two penetrated atherosclerotic ulcers), while 23 patients had the abdominal aortic aneurysm, one ruptured and two isolated iliac artery aneurysms. The indications for EVAR were isthmic aneurismal localisation, aged over 80 years and associated comorbidity (cardiac, pulmonary and cerebrovasular diseases, previous thoracotomy or multiple laparotomies associated with abdominal infection, idiopathic thrombocitopaenia). All of these patients had three or more risk factors. The diagnosis was established using duplex ultrasonography, angiography and MSCT. In the case of thoracic aneurysm, a Medtronic-Valiant endovascular stent graft was implanted, while for the abdominal aortic aneurysm Medtronic-Talent endovascular stent grafts with delivery systems were used. In three patients, following EVAR a surgical repair of the femoral artery aneurysm was performed, and in another three patients femoro-femoral cross over bypass followed implantation of aortouniiliac stent graft., Results: During procedure and follow-up period (mean 1.6 years), there were: one death, one conversion, one endoleak type 1, six patients with endoleak type 2 that disappeared during the follow-up period, one early graft thrombosis. No other complications, including aneurysm expansion, collapse, deformity and migration of the endovascular stent grafts, were registered., Conclusion: According to all medical and economic aspects, we recommend EVAR to treat acute traumatic thoracic aortic aneurysm, as well as in elderly and high-risk patients with abdominal or thoracic aneurysms, when open surgery is related to a significantly higher mortality and morbidity.

Both the design and purpose of the laryngoscope have been changed significantly since Alfred Kirstein invented his own "laryngeal mirror"--the autoscope. An initially straight, rigid oesophageal tube has been reshaped into a number of laryngeal blade modifications, suitable for use in various patient subpopulations. A tool initially intended to help otorhynolaryngologists diagnose and treat laryngeal diseases has been transformed into an instrument intended to help anesthesiologists intubate the trachea for the purpose of either anesthesia administration or airway maintenance. As direct laryngoscopy depends greatly upon individual manual skills, there has been almost no beginner who feels no proud of his first successful intubation. Thus, we should never forget the pioneers of laryngoscopy whose curiosity, creativity, and enthusiasm enabled us to give a clear and safe look into the larynx.

Contemporary tendencies in dentistry are based on the concept of maximal protection of healthy tooth tissues. Caries removal has been done traditionally with mechanical rotary instruments that are fast and precise. However, conventional cavity preparation has potential adverse effects to the pulp due to heat, pressure and vibrations. Moreover, drilling often causes pain and requires local anaesthesia, and these procedures are frequently perceived as unpleasant. Etiology, development and prevention of dental caries are better understood today and new restorative materials that bond micromechanically and/or chemically to dental tissues have been introduced. Thus, development of a new, less destructive caries removal technique is allowed. In the last decades, many alternative methods have been introduced in an attempt to replace rotary instruments. These are claimed to be efficient and selective for diseased tissues and to offer comfortable treatment to the patients. New methods include air abrasion, air polishing, ultrasonic, polymer burs, enzymes, systems for chemo-mechanical caries removal, and lasers. The aim of this paper was to discuss various caries removal techniques and possibilities of their use in clinical practice. Based on the literature review it can be concluded that none of the new caries removal methods can completely replace conventional rotary instruments.

Introduction: Treatment of carotid stenosis could be surgical: eversion endarterectomy, conventional endarterectomy and patch-plasty, resection with graft interposition and bypass procedure or, in the past few years, carotid artery angioplasty (PTA) with stent implantation., Objective: The aim of this study is to present early results of carotid artery angioplasty and stenting, as well as to identify indications for this procedure., Method: Twenty-three patients with stenosis of internal carotid artery were included in the prospective study which was performed in the period from July 2006 to July 2007. For PTA and stenting of the carotid artery we used Balloon dilatation catheter Ultra-soft SV and Carotid Wallstent Monorail. During the procedure, brain protection by embolic protection system Filter Wire EZ was essentialy performed. Descriptive statistical methods were performed to present and describe the patient characteristics, risk factors and results., Results: 23 patients were examined. In four (17.39%) cases there was asymptomatic, while in 19 (82.61%) there was symptomatic haemodynamic significant stenosis of the internal carotid artery. Four of these 19 patients (17.39%) had late restenosis following carotid endarterectomy, four (17.39%) important respiratory failure, and 11 (47.83%) important heart disease. Patients were followed up for the first 30 postopertive days. In that period, there were no mortality and no needs for surgical conversions. In one case (4.35%), residual stenosis of 30% remained. Two patients (8.70%) had TIA and one (4.35%) had CVI., Conclusion: Main indications for PTA and stenting of carotid arteries are: surgically inaccessible lesions (at or above C2; or subclavial); radiation-induced carotid stenosis; prior ispilateral radical neck dissection; prior carotid endarterectomy (restenosis), severe cardiac and pulmonary conditions. Limitations and contraindications to carotid angioplasty and stentning include: signficant peripheral occlusive diseases; unfavourable aortic arch anatomy; severe tortuosity of the common and internal carotid artery; severely calcified stenosis, lesions containing fresh thrombus; stenosis longer than 2 cm; critical (>99%) stenosis; associated carotid artery aneurysm; contrast-related issues and severe aortic valve stenosis.

Introduction: Interest for traumatic thoracic aorta rupture stems from the fact that its number continually increases, and it can be rapidly lethal., Objective: The aim of this study is to present early and long term results as well as experiences of our team in surgical treatment of traumatic thoracic aorta rupture., Method: Our retrospective study includes 12 patients with traumatic thoracic aorta rupture treated between 1985 and 2007.There were 10 male and two female patients of average age 30.75 years (18-74)., Results: In six cases, primary diagnosis was established during the first seven days days after trauma, while in 6 more than one month later. In 11 cases, classical open surgical procedure was performed, while endovascular treatment was used in one patient. Three (25%) patients died, while two (16.6%) had paraplegia. Nine patinets (75%) were trated without complications, and are in good condition after a mean follow-up period of 9.7 years (from one month to 22 years)., Conclusion: Surgical treatment requires spinal cord protection to prevent paraplegia, using cardiopulmonary by-pass (three of our cases) or external heparin-bonded shunts (five of our cases). Cardiopulmonary by-pass is followed with lower incidence of paraplegia, however it is not such a good solution for patients with polytrauma because of haemorrhage. The endovascular repair is a safe and feasible procedure in the acute phase, especilly because of traumatic shock and polytrauma which contributes to higher mortality rate after open surgery. On the other hand, in chronic postrauamatic aortic rupture, open surgical treatment is connected with a lower mortality rate and good long-term results. There have been no published data about long-term results of endovascular treatment in the chronic phase.

Introduction: A recombinant form of activated factor VII (rFVIIa) is a haemostatic drug that is approved for use in haemophiliacs with antibodies to factor VIII or factor IX. Most recent studies and clinical experience have shown that rFVIIa (NovoSeven, Novo Nordisk A/S, Denmark) gives extreme haemostatic effect in patients with severe "non-haemophilic" bleeding produced after trauma and major surgery., Objective: We present our preliminary experience of the use of rFVIIa in vascular surgery when conventional haemostatic measures are inadequate., Method: There were 32 patients divided into five groups: Group I--14 patients with ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysms; Group II--10 patients with thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms; Group III--5 patients with retroperitoneal tumours involving great abdominal vessels; Group IV--2 patients with portal hypertension and Group V--one patient with iatrogenic injury of brachial artery and vein during fibrinolytic treatment, because of myocardial infarction., Results: Clinical improvement was detected following treatment in 29 patients. Bleeding was successfully controlled as evidenced by improved haemodynamic parameters and decreased inotropic and transfusion requirements., Conclusion: In vascular patients more liberal use of rFVlla is limited, because no randomized controlled trial has proved its efficacy and safety in such patients; while also keeping in mind that the price of a 4.8 mg of rFVIIa is $4080. We recommend the use of rFVIIa in vascular surgery only during and after operative treatment of thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms, ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysms, retroperitoneal tumours involving the aorta and/or inferior vena cava, as well as portal hypertension, when non-surgical massive uncontrolled bleeding are present.

Background/aim: There are very few data about the effects of endogenous growth factors in vital pulp therapy, and still they are often controversial. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effects of platelet rich plasma (PRP) in conjugation with hydroxyapatite (HAP), as pulp capping materials, to root and periodontium formation., Methods: Eight young monkeys (Cercopithecus Aethiops) with permanent dentition and incomplete root formation were involved in this study. After pulpotomy, the pulp lesion was capped with calcium hydroxide (control), hydroxyapatite (experimental group I) or hydroxyapatite in conjugation with PRP (experimental group II). Six months later, the animals were sacrificed, the tissue was removed en block, and prepared for the histological analysis in a routine way., Results: The results of the histological analysis revealed that healing process was characterised by dentin bridge formation, maintained morphological and functional integrity of dental pulp and complete formation of dental root and surrounding periodontium. The inflammatory reaction was scored as mild to moderate, in almost all the samples in all groups, suggesting the biocompatibility of the used materials., Conclusion: Materials used in this study are convenient as capping agents, contributing maintaining the integrity of the pulp tissue and facilitating root and periodontium forma tion. According to histological data it could be suggested that hydroxyapatite in conjugation with endogenous growth factors, represents superior alternative to other materials used in this study.

Neurointensive care of patients with subarachnoid haemorrhage is based on the theory that clinical outcome is the consequence of the primary haemorrhage and a number of secondary insults in the acute post haemorrhage period. Several neuromonitoring techniques have been introduced or accomplished into clinical practice in the last decade with the purpose of monitoring different but related aspects of brain physiology, such as cerebral blood flow (CBF), pressure within the cranial cavity, metabolism, and oxygenation. The aim of these techniques is to obtain information that can improve knowledge on brain pathophysiology, and especially to detect secondary insults which may cause permanent neurological damage if undetected and untreated in "real time", at the time when they can still be managed. These techniques include intracranial pressure (ICP) measurements, jugular venous oxygen saturation, near-infrared spectroscopy, brain tissue monitoring, and transcranial Doppler. The available devices are limited because they measure a part of complex process indirectly. Expense, technical difficulties, invasiveness, limited spatial or temporal resolution and the lack of sensitivity add to the limitation of any individual monitor. These problems have been partially addressed by the combination of several monitors known as multimodality monitoring. In this review, we describe the most common neuromonitoring methods in patients with subarachnoidal hemorrhage that can assess nervous system function, cerebral haemodynamics and cerebral oxygenation.

Introduction: Cerebral infarction is more and more frequently present by massive participation and high percentage of mortality even in young population. It is notified as very hard, vitally endangered disease., Objective: To prove whether there is a difference in the gas analyses of the arterial and cerebral venous blood between the patients with the cerebral infarction of the left and right hemisphere and why it is significant for the treatment of those patients., Material and Methods: Sixty-five (65) patients of both sexes who were diagnosed by CT as: cerebral infarction, cerebral multiinfarctions and cerebral haemorrhagic infarctions were investigated. Under the same conditions their radial artery and left and right internal jugular vein were tapped--on the fourth, eighth and tenth day of their disease. Gas analysis, calculation of oxygen content and statistical comparison of testing results were performed from the samples of arterial and venous blood., Results: By continuous monitoring of gas analysis parameters of arterial and cerebral venous blood from internal jugular vein, we can follow up the phases of disease, the velocity of changes of gas analysis parameters and adequacy of brain circulation and to correct therapy adequately for the purpose of preventing basic disease complications and to estimate the results of treatment., Conclusion: There is a significant difference between the results of gas analysis of arteries and the internal jugular vein, in patients with infarctions of the left and right hemisphere of the brain.

Its advantages are: selective removal of carious tissue, absence of pain, reduced need for local anesthesia and less potentially negative effects on the dental pulp., Conclusion: The introduction of the surgical operating microscope, microsurgical instruments, ultrasonic retrotips for root-end cavity preparation and new root-end filling materials opened a new era in periapical surgery, even on multi-rooted teeth, often called endodontic microsurgery.

The aim of this study was to point out the prevalence of hypomineralised molars and incisors and emphasize importance of this condition in paediatric dentistry. This condition is defined as hypomineralisation of one or more first permanent molars frequently affecting incisors and referred to as molar incisor hypomineralisation (MIH). Aetiology of MIH has not been fully clarified and numerous aetiological factors have been cited. Hypomineralised molars are more prone to caries, cause severe restorative problems and are frequently extracted due to serious damage and caries complications. Incisors can present demarcated enamel opacities, while enamel breakdown is uncommon. Considering the fact that permanent first molars with severe defects demand complex treatment, they represent a serious problem for the patient as well as for the dentist.

Chylopericardium refers to existing communication between the pericardial sac and the thoracic duct carrying the chyle. The objective of our report was to highlight the specificity of diagnosis and treatment of this rare but tedious condition through the analysis of two case reports. Male patient, aged 63 years, with chylopericardium was diagnosed perioperatively (implantation of artificial aortic--St. Jude No 21 and mitral valve--St. Jude No 29). Etiology of pericardial effusion was established by Sudan III staining of punctate specimen obtained by subxiphoid pericardial puncture. Probable cause of chylopericardium was the lesion of ductus thoracicus during cross-clamping of the superior caval vein with a Cooley clamp. Initial treatment included diet rich in medium-chain triglycerides which resulted in resolution of the effusion. During five-year follow-up, there were no recurrences of pericardial effusion. The second patient was female, 21 years old, with chylopericardium after partial pericardiectomy performed because of the chronic severely symptomatic pericardial effusion, resistant to other forms of treatment. Pericardiocentesis provided 650 ml of yellowish fluid with a high concentration of cholesterol (3.2 mmol/l), triglycerides (16.6 mmol/l), and proteins (64.7 g/l), which verified chylopericardium, most probably as a consequence of the lesion of ductus thoracicus during partial pericardiectomy. Diet rich in medium-chain triglycerides failed to decrease the effusion, after two weeks of treatment (daily secretion 250-350 ml). Lymphography revealed lesion of ductus thoracicus, most probably at Th9/Th10 level, with no direct visualization of extravasal accumulation of contrast media. Surgical ligation of ductus thoracicus was performed through the right thoracotomy. However, postoperative secretion increased to 1000 ml/day. Patient underwent redo surgery comprising the ligation of lymphatic vessels, guided by extravasation of intraoperatively iwected methylene-blue indicator. During one-year follow-up, there were no recurrences of pericardial effusion. In conclusion, intraoperative lymphography significantly contributed to successful surgical treatment of patients with chylopericardium.

Mechanical ventilation of lungs during the long history has gone through different phases, which have been associated with technological and scientific development of its time. This is the most complex process and in spite of many progress it does not solve all problems, maintained of respiratory homeostasis, especially in patients with difficult lungs damage. Therefore, there is an existing need for further development of mechanical ventilation of lungs. Over the past time, a number of innovative approaches or adjuncts to mechanical ventilation have been actively researched. Many of these have shown some promise in improving our ability to provide ventilatory support. Which of these innovations will outlast the future? Based on actual development at innovations of mechanical ventilation, it can be assumed that it will be: protective lung ventilation, special form of gas exchange, weaning from mechanical ventilation, noninvasive and home use ventilators, development in fallowing patient's condition and pharmacotherapy development.

Introduction: The aim of this study was to investigate the most important etiological factors related to traumatic dental injuries, type of required treatment, period from injury to initial treatment and frequency of recall appointments., Material and Methods: The sample consisted of 283 children with dental injuries managed at the Department of Dentistry of the Faculty of Medicine in Novi Sad, during the last 7 years. Retrospective data relied on trauma protocols of this department, whereas collected data referred to etiological factors, type of initial treatment, period from injury to initial treatment, recall appointments and complications of traumatic dental injuries. These results were compared with other similar national and international studies, in order to promote implementation of preventive strategies that would reduce the increasing frequency of dental trauma., Results: Fall accidents were the most common cause of dental trauma. Injuries were most frequent in autumn, in the street, and in the afternoon hours. Single tooth injury was predominant, while the injured mostly denied previous injuries. Almost half of the injured patients did not seek professional help in the first 24 hours after the injury. 40% of treated patients missed their recall appointment., Conclusion: Knowledge of the etiology is important for planning preventive measures, but because of the complexity of etiological factors, it is difficult to prevent traumatic dental injuries. It is also important to underline the importance of immediate initial treatment of traumatized patients, and significance of their regular professional supervision. Generally speaking, almost all treatment procedures in management of traumatic dental injuries include preventive component.

Saliva is a secretion of the salivary and mucous glands and is of major importance in the maintainance of oral health. Over the last few decades, saliva has been evaluated as a diagnostic fluid in medicine for determining systemic disease markers as well as for monitoring numerous drugs, narcotics, and hormones. The biochemical analysis of saliva is particularly important in dentistry. The estimation of the risk of appearance and diagnosis of disease, monitoring of disease progression, evaluation of therapy efficacy for caries, periodontitis, premalignant and malignant oral lesions, as well as infectious diseases of the oral cavity, can be assessed by analysing different constituents of saliva. Individuals at risk of caries can be identified using tests that determine saliva flow rate, saliva buffer capacity, and colonisation of the oral cavity by cariogenic bacteria. Today, these rapid and simple diagnostic tests are used routinely in caries risk determination. The study and use of saliva-based diagnostics have increased over the last few decades. Clinical testing of saliva shows much promise. However, there is a need for much additional research in this area, before the true clinical value of saliva as a diagnostic fluid in dentistry can be determined.

Introduction: Tobacco use is an important risk factor for advanced histopathological findings on edentulous alveolar ridge mucosa. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of smoking on histopathological findings on edentulous alveolar ridge mucosa., Material and Methods: The experimental group consisted of 48 patients (29 smokers and 19 nonsmokers). The mean age of smokers was 42.6 and of nonsmokers 48.7 years. The anamnesis included the following data: age, sex, diseases and toxic habits--cigarette smoking. Biopsy samples were taken from the edentulous alveolar ridge mucosa without gross signs of symptoms., Results: The mean number of cigarettes smoked per day was 11.5 +/- 7. The results of chi2 test proved that there were no statistically significant differences (p > 0.05) in histopathological findings on the alveolar ridge mucosa. The mean duration of smoking was 12.7 +/- 5 years. Hyperkeratosis was established in 76.92% of smokers who smoked longer than 15 years. The mean age at which smokers began smoking was 27.3 +/- 8 years and there were no statistically significant differences in histopathological findings on the alveolar ridge mucosa correlated with the beginning of smoking., Conclusion: On the basis of our research we conclude that smokers who have been smoking for 15 years are at risk for developing histopathological changes of the alveolar ridge mucosa, but there were no statistically significant differences in histopathological findings on the alveolar ridge mucosa correlated with the number of cigarettes per day and the beginning of smoking.

Introduction: Dimensional stability of polymer-based dental materials is compromised by polymerization reaction of the monomer. The conversion into a polymer is accompanied by a closer packing of molecules, which leads to volume reduction called curing contraction or polymerization shrinkage. Curing contraction may break the adhesion between the adhesive system and hard tooth tissues forming microgaps which may result in marginal deterioration, recurrent caries and pulp injury. POLYMERIZATION SHRINKAGE OF RESIN-BASED RESTORATIVE DENTAL MATERIALS: Polymerization of the organic phase (nonomer molecules) of resin-based dental materials causes shrinkage. The space occupied by filler particles is not associated with polymerization shrinkage. However, high filler loading within certain limits, can contribute to a lesser curing contraction., Polymerization Shrinkage Stress and Stress Reduction Possibilities: Polymerization shrinkage stress of polymer-based dental resins can be controlled in various ways. The adhesive bond in tooth-restoration interface guides the contraction forces to cavity walls. If leakage occurs, complications like secondary caries and pulpal irritation may jeopardize the longevity of a restoration. Stress relieve can be obtained by modifications of the monomer and photoinitiator, or by specially designed tooth preparation and application of bases and liners of low modulus of elasticity. The polymerization contraction can be compensated by water absorption due to oral cavity surrounding. The newest approach to stress relief is based on modulation of polymerization initiation., Conclusion: This work deals with polymerization contraction and how to achieve leak-proof restoration. Restorative techniques that may reduce the negative effect of polymerization shrinkage stress need further research in order to confirm up-to-date findings.

Introduction: Based on literature data it is obvious that there is a connection between smoking and periodontal diseases. Alveolar bone loss increases with smoking. Tobacco smoking affects the proportion of subgingival bacterial flora by influencing oxidoreduction potential of dental plaque and thus making conditions for development of anaerobic bacteria. According to some researchers, smoking affects the mineral component of bone tissue. Orthopantomograms show higher level of alveolar bone loss in smokers than in nonsmokers with the same level of oral hygiene. The aim of this study was to establish if smoking affects alveolar bone loss in complete denture wearers., Material and Methods: Our clinical investigation included 60 patients of both sexes (30 smokers and 30 nonsmokers) all complete dentures wearers. All patients met study criteria: jaw relation and smokers who smoke over 20 cigarettes per day. All subjects were interviewed, and after that orthopantomograms were made. They were used to calculate the degree of alveolar bone loss., Results: The examined subjects were approximately of the same age. Mean age of smokers was 59.9 and nonsmokers 61.8. It was established that differences regarding resorption in men were not significant. The degree of resorption in women smokers and women non-smokers was different, but differences were not significant., Discussion: It has been proven that the number of cigarettes smoked per day is very important. It is considered that the risk of oral epithelial dysplasia increases when smoking more than 20 cigarettes per day. Considering our results regarding resorption of edentulous alveolar ridge in smokers and nonsmokers, we concluded that there were no significant differences. There are opinions in literature that smoking is not an etiological factor in resorption, but there are some opinions that smoking is connected with the degree of resorption in periodontium. The analyses of resorptive changes in edentuolous smokers were done only around implants and it was estimated that smoking has more influence than other clinical risk factors., Conclusion: On the bases of our research we may conclude that smoking does not directly affect the degree of resorption of edentulous alveolar ridge with complete denture wearers.

Introduction: The aim of this study was to investigate how "run off", diabetes, cigarette smoking and early reinterventions influence long-term patency of the "reversed" and "in situ" femoro-popliteal (F-P) bypass grafts., Patients and Methods: The study included 1991 patients with "reversed" F-P and 99 patients with "in situ" F-P bypass grafts operated on between 1988 and 1994. There were 153 (80.10%) male and 38 (19.90%) female patients in the group with "reversed" bypass and in the group with "in situ" bypass there were 78 (78.8%) male and 21 (21.2%) female patients. The average age of all patients was 59.04 (27-80) years. Eighty five (44.5%) patients in the group with "reversed" F-P bypass had diabetes mellitus and 43 (43.4%) in the group with "in situ" bypass. One hundred and fifty two (79.68%) patients in the group with "reversed" bypass were cigarette smokers and 80 (80.8%) in the group with "in situ" bypass. In Table 1 patients according to Fontain's classification of occlusive arterial disease are presented. On the basis of angiographic examination all patients were divided into four groups (with patent all 3 crural arteries, with patent 2 crural arteries, with patent one crural artery and without patent crural arteries) (Table 2). All patients were controlled using physical and Doppler ultrasonographic examinations immediately after the operation; after 1, 3, 6 months and then every year postoperativelly. In cases with suspected graft occlusion or any other complication, control angiography has also been carried out. Statistical analysis of the results was performed using chi 2 and Fisher's test., Results: The patients were followed-up from 3 to 10 years. In cases with patent all 3 crural arteries there was no significant difference in long-term patency between "reversed" and "in situ" bypasses (Fisher's test, P = 0.66; p > 0.05) (Graph 1). In cases with patent two crural arteries, there was no significant difference between groups with "reversed" and "in situ" bypasses chi 2 = 0.25, p > 0.05) (Graph 2). The long-term patency was significantly better in the group with "in situ" bypass if only one crural artery was patent (chi 2 = 4.96, p < 0.05) (Graph 3). In cases with occluded all three crural arteries there was no significant difference in long-term patency between the two examined groups (Fisher's test, P = 0.29; p > 0.05) (Graph 4). There was no significant difference between groups with "reversed" and "in situ" bypasses in patients with diabetes mellitus (chi 2 = 0.01; p > 0.05) (Graph 5). There was also no statistically significant difference between the two examined groups regarding the preoperative cigarette smoking (chi 2 = 0.94; p > 0.05) (Graph 6). However, in both groups postoperative cigarette smoking showed a statistically significant decrease in long-term patency (chi 2 = 66.71; p < 0.01) (Graph 7). The early REDO operations statistically significantly decreased long-term patency in both groups (chi 2 = 34.89; p < 0.01) (Graph 8). The late graft occlusions were found in 60 patients with "reversed" and 23 patients with "in situ" F-P bypasses. Table 3 shows causes of late graft occlusions., Conclusion: In some cases with pure "run off" "in situ" bypass technique showed better long-term patency. We preferred this technique when "run off" was pure, when diameter of the saphenous vein was small, and when bypass was "long". Diabetes mellitus had no significant influence on long-term graft patency in both groups, as well as regarding preoperative cigarette smoking. However, postoperative cigarette smoking and early REDO operations, statistically significant by decreased long-term graft patency in both groups. The reason was that cigarette smoking was not permitted postoperatively, while in cases with early reinterventions physical screening and ultrasonographic examinations were necessary.

Introduction: The small choice of graft materials is one of the greatest problems in femoro-popliteal (F-P) bypass reconstructions. Besides all biosynthetics(2-5) and synthetics(6) graft materials, there is no right alternative for autologous saphenous vein graft in F-P reconstructions. There are two main techniques for F-P reconstructions: "reversed" and "in situ". The aim of this study is the comparison of the long-term patency between "reversed" and "in situ" F-P bypasses., Patients and Methods: In the study were included 191 patients with "reversed" and 99 patients with "in situ" F-P bypass grafts operated on between 1988 and 1994. There were 153 (80.10%) male and 38 (19.90%) female patients in the group with "reversed" bypass, and 78 (78.78%) male and 21 (21.22%) female patients in the group with "in situ" bypass. The average age of all patients was 59.04 (27-80) years. Eighty five (44.5%) patients in the group with "reversed" F-P bypass had diabetes mellitus and 43 (43.43%) in the group with "in situ" bypass. One hundred and fifty two (79.68%) patients in the group with "reversed" bypass were cigarette smokers and as 80 (80.8%) in the group with "in situ" bypass. In Table 1 the Fontain classification of occlusive diseases in operated patients is presented. The early proximal reconstructions were performed in 49 patients with "reversed" and 16 patients with "in situ" bypasses (Table 2). The associated proximal reconstructions were performed in 21 patients with "reversed" and in 14 patients with "in situ" bypasses (Table 3). All patients were controlled by physical and Doppler ultrasonographic examination immediately after the operation, after 1, 3, 6 months, and then every year postoperativelly. In cases with suspected graft occlusion or any other complication, control angiographic examinations was also performed. The statistical analysis of the results was done using "Life table" analysis., Results: The patients were followed-up from 3 to 10 years. The results of "life-table" analysis are presented in Tables 4-8 and Graph 1. The "in situ" technique showed statistically significant better long-term patency compared to "reversed" technique, after 2 and 10 years (p < 0.05). The immediate patency in cases with "reversed" bypass was 98.96%, while limb salvage was 97.91%. In the same group long-term patency was 72.8% and limb salvage 73.9%. In the group with "in situ" bypasses the immediate patency as well as limb salvage were 96.97%. In the same group long-term patency was 73.8% and limb salvage 77.2%. In Table 5 potential advantages of the "in situ" F-P bypass technique are shown (16-21). However, there are controversial data on clinical results of both bypasses. Some authors described better long-term results of the "in situ" F-P bypass technique (28-30), while according to other data there are no significant differences between these two bypass groups (31-33). Most authors emphasized the two advantages of "in situ" bypasses in F-P reconstructions: a small diameter of the saphenous vein; in cases with pure run off (34-36).

Introduction: Gluteal artery pseudoaneurysms are very rare [1]. They mostly occur after gunshot and stub wounds [2]. However, gluteal artery pseudoaneurysms can be caused by pelvic fracture [1]. Also, they can be isolated or associated with trauma of the pelvic and abdominal viscera [3]. The authors present two cases of gluteal artery pseudoaneurysms. Case 1. A 30-year-old man was treated for large swelling of the left buttock. One month previously he manifested a gunshot wound in the gluteal region. He also had symptoms of lumboischialgia with peroneal nerve paresis. The physical examination revealed a large pulsatile mass over the left buttock with an associated overlying bruit. Selective angiography of the internal iliac artery (Figure 1) revealed a large inferior gluteal artery pseudoaneurysm that caused dislocation of both external and internal iliac arteries. The patient was operated under epidural anaesthesia by the combined abdominal (extraperitoneal) and gluteal approach. By extraperitoneal approach the internal iliac artery was identified and ligated. After the closure of the wound, the patient was placed on the abdomen, and pseudoaneurysm was opened by an incision made between gluteus maximus and medius muscles. After evacuation of the parietal thrombus and pseudocapsule resection, nutrient vessels were ligated. The postoperative recovery was good, and the patient was free of neurologic symptoms two days after the operation. The late result (after 4 years) is also good. Case 2. A-53-year-old man was treated for small haematoma pulsans (Figure 2) in the right buttock. Fifteen days previously he was treated in the regional hospital by intramuscular "antirheumatic cocktails". The physical examination revealed a small pulsatile mass over the right buttock associated with overlying bruit. The selective angiography of the internal iliac artery demonstrated a small inferior gluteal artery pseudoaneurysm. The patient was operated by the procedure described. The postoperative recovery and the late result (after 6 months) were good., Discussion: According to our knowledge, only 8 cases of gluteal artery pseudoaneurysms are reported in literature in the last 11 years (including the first three months of this year) [4-8]. The lesions of the gluteal arteries, especially pseudoaneurysms, have no specific symptoms and signs. usually, they appear as haematoma pulsans and neurologic deficiency due to compression. (One of our patients). The gluteal abscess can be a differential diagnostic problem. Duplex ultrasonography, CT and selective angiography can be used in the diagnosis [5]. The standard surgical treatment of gluteal artery pseudoaneurysms consists of the ligature of the internal iliac artery (using transperitoneal or extraperitoneal approach) and pseudoaneurysmal resection and ligation of nutrient vessels by gluteal approach [9]. The second procedure is the temporary clamping of the internal iliac artery and transgluteal ligation of the nutrient vessels [7]. The microcatheter embolization of the nutrient vessels using standard invasive radiologic approaches via femoral artery is the method of choice in the treatment of gluteal artery pseudoaneurysms [10]. A buttock pulsatile mass and neurological deficiency in a patient with history of penetrating gluteal trauma, suggest the existence of gluteal artery pseudoaneurysm and require diagnostic evaluation.

Introduction: In reconstructive procedures of the abdominal aorta synthetic grafts are today mostly used. There are two types of bifurcated synthetic grafts: Dacron and polytetrafluorethilene (PTFE). In many papers these grafts are compared in aortobifemoral position. Karner 1988, and Lord 1988, found no significant difference between them after aortobifemoral reconstructions. In 1955. Paaske wrote about a new "stretch" bifurcated PTFE graft in aortobifemoral position. Comparing this material with standard Dacron graft, he only found a shorter operating time. The aim of this paper is to compare Dacron and PTFE bifurcated grafts in aortobifemoral position in patients with aortoiliac occlusive diseases., Material and Methods: This prospective study included 283 aortobifemoral reconstructions due to aortoiliac occlusive diseases operated between January 1st, 1984 and December 31st, 1992 at the Institute for Cardiovascular Diseases of the Serbian Clinical Centre in Belgrade. Bifurcated PTFE grafts were used in 136 patients, and nonimpregnated knitted Dacron grafts in 147 subjects. There were 25 (8.8%) female and 258 (91.2%) male patients, average age 56.88 years. Ninety one (32.2%) patients had a claudication discomfort (Fonten stadium II), 91 (32.2%) disabling claudication discomfort (Fonten stadium IIB), 45 (15.9%) rest pain (Fonten stadium III), and 56 (19.8%) gangrene (Fonten stadium IV). In 45 (15.9%) patients previous vascular procedures were performed. Prior to operation, Doppler ultrasonography and translumbar aortography were carried out (Figure 1). Transperitoneal approach to abdominal aorta, and standard inguinal approach to femoral arteries were used. In 154 (54.4%) patients proximal anastomosis had an end to side (TL), and in 129 (45.6%) end to end (TT) form. In 152 (26.88%) cases distal anastomosis was done in the common femoral (AFC) artery, and in 414 (73.2%) cases in the deep femoral (APF) artery. In 7 patients the aorto-femoro-popliteal "jumping" bypass was done, and in 29 patients simultaneous sequential femoro-popliteal bypass graft. The patients were following-up over the period from one, six and twelve months after operation, and later once a year, using physical examination and Doppler ultrasonography. In patients with suspected graft occlusion, anastomotic stenosis, pseudoaneurysms, progression of distal arterial diseases, Duplex ultrasonography and angiography were also used, and leukoscintigraphy in patients with suspected infection. Statistical analysis was performed using Long Rank and Student t-test., Results: Inhospital mortality rate was 11 (7%). Distal reconstructions significantly increased the mortality rate when simultaneously performed with aortobifemoral bypass graft (p < 0.01). The follow-up period was from 2 months to 9.5 years (mean 3.6 years). The early patency rate was 97% from PTFE and 99.4% for Dacron grafts, while the late patency rate was 94.9% for PTFE and 96.6% for Dacron grafts. The type of the graft had no statistical influence on the early and late graft patency (p > 0.05) (Graphs 1, 2, 3). Six (2.1%) early unilateral limb occlusions were observed. Five patients had the PTFE and one the Dacron graft, without statistically significant difference (p > 0.05). The reasons for early graft occlusion were: stenosis of distal anastomosis in 3 patients, and pure run off in 3 patients. In 5 patients urgent reoperation (limb thrombectomy with profundoplasty or femoro-popliteal bypass graft above the knee) were done with complete recovery of legs. However, in one patient the above knee amputation was done. During the follow-up period, 14 (5.2%) late graft occlusions were recorded. There were 11 unilateral limb occlusions and 3 bilateral. All patients with bilateral occlusions had PTFE grafts but this was not statistically significant (p > 0.05) comparing two types of grafts. The surgical treatment of 13 posttraumatic arteriovenous (AV) fistulae and 32 pseudoaneurysmae (PsAn) treated in the last 5 years in the Center of vascular surgery of the institute of cardiovascular diseases, Clinical center of Serbia (Belgrade) was presented. Three women and 42 men (mean age 31.7 years) were examined. Twenty-one injuries occurred in a war, while 24 injuries occurred in the peacetime. In most of the cases the superficial femoral artery was involved. The average time elapsed from the moment of injury till surgery, was 9 months in patients suffering from AV fistulae, while in patients suffering from PsAn the elapsed time was one month. In all of those with AV fistulae, some reconstructions of artery and vein were performed, except in 2 cases where the vein was ligated. In twenty-six patients suffering from PsAn the arterial reconstruction was performed, while in 6 cases the artery was ligated. Considering the type of artery, none of the patients suffered from postoperative ischemia. Patients were followed up for 2 years and 2 months on the average after the operation. As far as the reconstructive operations were concerned, postoperative patency rate was 100%, while limb salvage was achieved in 96.9%. Namely, one amputation was done in spite of high arterial patency rate, but it was indicated by massive bone-muscle tissue loss, that occurred after an injury by the land-mine. Due to the rapid progress of the disease the authors suggested that the operative treatment of posttraumatic AV fistulae and PsAn should start as soon as possible. This was supported by good follow-up results in operatively treated patients.

The authors followed up the health of 322 elementary-school pupils at Sabac who were exposed to increased air pollution with chemical agents (ammonia, fluor hydrogen, chloracetic acid, sulfur dioxide, soot). The mean annual concentration of these gases were above or insignificantly under maximally permitted values. The results of the examination were as follows: recurrent cough in 12.4 per cent of cases and clinical signs of chronic or obstructive bronchitis in 8.4 per cent of children. Values of vital capacity were under normal in 27.6 per cent of cases and almost in the half of children vital capacity was at the lower normal limit. FEV1/FVC was under normal in 15 per cent of cases and at the lower normal limit in about 18.6 per cent of children. In spite of a great number of children with positive cutaneous tests to inhalation allergens with Prick's method IgE was within normal limits in these children. Thus, a significant noxious effect of allergic components on respiratory organs should be excluded. This was also confirmed by spirometric measurements of the two subsequent maximal expiriums when differences of +/- 3% were registered. However, in children with allergic bronchitis the value dispersion was by 2-3 times greater. Consequently, the authors concluded that damaged respiratory organs in children at Sabac appeared in a greater number of cases than in other places and that these damages were due to increased concentrations of different chemical air pollution agents.

The article deals with types of life events preceding the onset or repeated episodes of endogenous (major) depression, as well as their influence on the intensity of depressive symptoms in hospitalized patients. It was found that events with intensive long-term contextual threat more often precede the first episode than the repeated depressive episodes (4 cases), although the difference was not statistically significante (F=0.12 F>0.05). Loss (death or separation from a close person) is an event. Recent in closeds relation with the onset of depressive disorder and far more often procedes the first than the repeated (1 case) episode. The difference was statistically significant (F=0.018 P<0.05). It seems that, due to the exhaustion of defensive mechanisms, a mild stress is sufficient to provoke a repeated episode of depression. The intensity of depressive symptoms was not indicated by the stress impact of the experienced life events both in the onset (t=0.039 P>0.05) and the repeated episode of illness.
