1. Assessment of health risk and socio-economic losses associated with nutrition-related non-communicable diseases

Abstract

Mortality among the Irkutsk region population was chosen as a research object. The aim of this study was to assess socioeconomic losses and the epidemiological risk caused by nutrition-related non-communicable diseases, including diseases of the circulatory system, among adult working age population in the Irkutsk region. The study was cross-sectional and observational. We analyzed data on mortality, gross regional product and employment provided by the Territorial office of the Federal State Statistic Service in the Irkutsk region over 2011–2020. Social and economic losses caused by early mortality among the population in the Irkutsk region were calculated in accordance with the Methodical Guidelines on using the Potential years of life lost (PYLL) indicator to establish priority health issues of the Russian population at the federal, regional and municipal level. Data were analyzed using Statistica 6.0. The assessment revealed that over 2011–2020 mortality caused by nutrition-related non-communicable diseases on average accounted for 13.85 % (13.64; 14.07) of the overall population mortality. Average annual social losses equaled 154,827.00 (153,098.56; 156,555.44) person-years lost before a person reached the end of working age. Accompanying probable economic losses aggregated over the analyzed period ranged between 9,560.58 and 15,934.29 million rubles. We managed to build acceptable predictive models (R2 > 0.5) on the growth in economic losses due to mortality caused by nutrition-related non-communicable diseases for both sexes and for males living in the Irkutsk region. Our findings highlight the significance of socioeconomic losses caused by nutrition-related non-communicable diseases and give evidence of suboptimal diets being widely spread among the population of the Baikal region.

Abstract

One of modern methods of estimating health losses under malignant neoplasms in economic terms, characterizing number of deaths and age of death are lost years of potential life. The cumulative losses from premature cancer mortality made up to 29 217.5 man-years in 2013 and 39 710 man-years in 2021. The number of years lost over 9 years increased by 10 492.5 man-years despite decreasing of mortality across all ages. The rate of lost years of potential life during this period increased from 5.3 to 6.2 years. The maximal contribution to lost years of potential life was made by population groups 45-59 years old. Total losses from premature mortality from cervical cancer were 2682.5 man-years and 2411 man-years in 2013 in 2021. The number of years lost decreased by 271.5 man-years. The rate of lost years of potential life during this period increased from 0.5 to 3.7 years. The greatest contribution to lost years of potential life was made by population groups 60-64 and 40-49 years old. The calculation demonstrated that there are significant reserves for reducing population mortality from malignant neoplasms in most vulnerable age population groups that is important for organization of oncological care and planning of target prevention programs.

Abstract

В статье проводится оценка демографических потерь от COVID-19 в 2020 году в Республике Башкортостан на основе показателя потерянных лет потенциальной жизни. При этом анализируются не только официальные данные по смертности от COVID-19, но и данные по избыточной смертности. Анализ показал, что потенциальные годы потерянной жизни от избыточной смертности превышают аналогичный показатель для СOVID-19 в 18 раз. Для мужчин этот показатель выше в 20 раз, для женщин в 15 раз., The article assesses the demographic losses from COVID-19 in 2020 in the Republic of Bashkortostan based on the indicator of years of potential life lost. At the same time, not only official data on mortality from COVID-19 are analyzed, but also data on excess mortality. The analysis showed that the potential years of life lost from excess mortality exceeds that for COVID-19 by 18 times. Abstract

Данные по смертности населения – источник информации об эффективности системы здравоохранения и эпидемиологическом благополучии изучаемых территорий. Традиционно используемые показатели официальной статистики во многом обусловлены естественными процессами старения и мало чувствительны к смертности в молодом возрасте. Методика определения потенциальных лет утраченной жизни (Potential Years of Life Lost или PYLL) позволяет объективизировать социальную и демографическую значимость сухих числовых показателей, принимая во внимание возраст на момент смерти. Целью проведенного исследования стала оценка бремени смертности от суицидов в Калужской области в сравнении с другими внешними причинами. В Калужской области за период 2003–2018 гг. вследствие суицидов было утрачено 69574 PYLL, что составило 3,67% от общего бремени смертности. Соотношение PYLL мужчин и женщин за изученный период составило 4,22:1. Обращает на себя внимание тенденция к росту PYLL от суицидов у мужчин в возрастной группе 55–59 лет и наоборот тренд к снижению PYLL в возрастном интервале 50–54 лет у женщин. По суммарному количеству PYLL за исследуемый период наиболее уязвимый возрастной интервал – 20–34 года. Отмечены более высокие цифры бремени у городского населения в сравнении с сельским, при более высоких коэффициентах суицидальной смертности на селе., Mortality is an important source of information on the Public Health Services effectiveness. The national mortality data are strongly associated with natural ageing processes and are not sensitive to mortality among youth. Potential Years of Life Lost (PYLL) reflects social and demographic significance of mortality burden. The aim of this study was to assess the burden of suicides in Kaluga Region in comparison with other external causes of death. It has been established that between 2003 and 2018 the overall burden of suicides was 69574 PYLL representing 3.67% of total burden of mortality over the period. The men to women PYLL ratio was 4.22:1. The most vulnerable age cohort was 20–34 years. There is a noticeable upward trend in male burden of suicides in the 55–59 age group and a downward trend in female burden in the 50–54 age cohort.
