Objective: Experimental assessment of the effect of modified and unmodified surgical suture material on abdominal adhesive process., Material and Methods: The study was performed on male rats of the Wistar subpopulation. There were 5 animals in each group. In all animals, midline abdominal incision was followed by suturing the parietal peritoneum with modified and unmodified suture material. All animals were euthanized with carbon dioxide vapors in 14 days after surgery. Macro- and microscopic assessment of severity of abdominal adhesive process was carried out. Two types of preparation of excised complexes 'peritoneum-suture material-adhesion' were applied for histological examination: paraffin sections and embedding in epoxy resin. Specimens were stained by Van Gieson and with methylene blue solution. Histological specimens were examined using Axio Imager A1 light microscope (Zeiss, Germany)., Results: Polypropylene filaments result extensive adhesions occupying about 75% of the area. Adhesions have a dense structure with signs of vascularization. Modification of suture material with solution of polyhydroxybutyrate/hydroxyvalerate and heparin reduce severity of adhesions. The use of modified suture material was followed by adhesions with more loose structure, no signs of vascularization. Adhesions occupied less than 25% of the area. Histological examination of excised complexes 'peritoneum-suture material-adhesion' revealed accumulation of inflammatory cells around the unmodified suture material, while there were no signs of tissue inflammatory process around the modified sutures., Conclusion: Application of polyhydroxybutyrate/hydroxyvalerate and heparin on the surface of surgical sutures is an effective method for prevention of abdominal adhesions.

In the period from 1988 to 1991 the authors carried out 27 pancreatoduodenal resections with 11.1% mortality. From analysis of the results they formulated the main technical principles of this operation and suggested a complex of intraoperative measures for prevention of acute postoperative pancreatitis. The complex included application of a 5-fluorouracil-containing covering of the pancreas at the stage of exposure of the complex which will be removed; individualization of the methods for treatment of the pancreatic stump depending on the diameter of the pancreatic duct; the use of prolene in forming the pancreaticoenteroanastomosis; intraoperative administration of cephalosporins and dioxidine followed by antibacterial therapy; application of microsphere with cytostatics to the pancreas at the operation end for prolongation of pancreatic secretion suppression.

30 rabbits were operated on by sigmoidal ovarian resection during which one side was treated with fibrin glue, and alternative with different suturing materials (prolene 7/0, catgut 3/0). Macroscopic investigations and determination of generative functions of postoperative animals, in a 3 weeks after coupling with male rabbits, were carried out. It was discovered that the application of fibrin glue promotes the reduction of in inflammatory and sclerotic changes. The frequency of occurred postoperative adhesions and preservation of increasing the ovarian size and weight tendency with the maintained functional conditions in comparison with those treated with suture materials. Prolene has certain advantages when compared with catgut, like macroscopic changes in the ovarian tissues, resulting in decrease of ovarian size and weight, increase of formation of postoperative adhesions and unbalance the whole generative system. In clinics fibrin glue was applied to 7 patients during different operations on ovary. Preliminary clinical data confirmed the experimental results.

General toxic and sensitizing characteristics of polyoxypropylenamine (POPamine) hardeners of synthetic resins under chronic inhalation impact of their aerosols were experimentally studied. Characteristic variations of synthetic activity of blood leukocytes were studied during the process of chronic POPamine intoxication. High allergic effect of those compounds was established along with the conformity of body sensitizing indicators to variations in synthetic activity of peripheral blood cells. It was concluded that the account of sensitizing POPamine characteristics was necessary when setting up hygienic standards for the work zone air. The possibility of using the indicators of synthetic activity of blood leukocytes as an additional criterion for evaluating allergenic activity of chemical substances was also pointed out.
