Abstract

his paper compares the results of anthropological research and information about the burial of horses in the burialgrounds of the Sambian-Natangian civilisation (Dollkeim-Kovrovo culture). The inclusion of anthropological analysis datafrom the cemeteries of Mitino and Zaostrovye-1 shows that for the Merovingian period and the beginning of the Vikingperiod, the connection of horse burials exclusively with male graves is not certain. Horse burials are accompanied here bymale, female and children’s burials. Presence of a horse in the burials of Sambian-Natangian culture was undoubtedly a socialmarker, and Roman period was associated primarily with military funerary rituals. At the beginning of the Middle Ages, thecustom of burying a horse was “democratized” and widely used. However, presence of horses in burials continues to play therole of a social indicator, but now it is not the presence of the horse that is indicative, but their number., В данной работе сопоставлены результаты антропологических исследований и сведения о захоронениях лошадейв могильниках самбийско-натангийской культуры (культура Доллькайм-Коврово). Привлечение данных антропологи-ческого анализа из некрополей Митино и Заостровье-1 показывает, что для меровингского времени и начала эпохивикингов связь конских захоронений исключительно с мужскими могилами не является бесспорной. Конские захо-ронения сопровождают здесь мужские, женские и детские погребения. Присутствие коня в погребениях самбийско-натангийской культуры, несомненно, являлось и социальным маркером, а в римское время было связано в первую оче-редь с воинскими погребальными ритуалами. В начале средневековья обычай погребения коня «демократизируется»и получает широкое распространение. Наличие коней в погребениях продолжает играть роль социального индикатора,но теперь показательным является не сам факт присутствие коня, а их количество.

Abstract

International audience; Th e main task of this work is to determine the meaning of weapons and equestrian equipment in the hierarchy ofburials of the Sambian-Natangian (Dolkeim-Kovrovo) civilisation of the Migration Period and the Early MerovingianPeriod, corresponding to the Balts, Aestii of written sources of the 6th century (Cassiodorus, Jordanes). In total,more than 180 burials with weapons and spurs have been identifi ed from this time. Th e weapons are dominatedby combat knives, while spears, axes and shields are less common. Burials with weapons and spurs at some burialgrounds, they are scattered over the entire investigated area and do not form pronounced clusters. Th ese are, forexample, the necropolises Lauth-Bolshoye Isakovo or Schlakalken-3. In other cases, it is possible to identify zones ofconcentration of burials with military equipment, for example, in the necropolises Corejten-Putilovo, Dollkeim- Kovrovo,Grebieten-Okunevo, Hünenberg-Rantau-Dobroe. It is diffi cult to say whether the identifi ed concentrations ofsuch graves correspond to any real social groups (families? clans?). It is also necessary to note the unevenness in therichness of the funerary inventory in diff erent necropolises. Th is diff erence is clearly evident in the armament of, forexample, the burial grounds of Mitino or Zaostrovye-1, where there are very few or no weapons at all, in comparison,for example, with the Warnikam-Pervomayskoye necropolis, where they are found much more oft en. Th e diff erenceis also manifested in the wealth of inventory in diff erent parts of the same necropolis, as can be seen from the exampleof the Mitino burial ground. It turned out that weapons play a limited role as a social marker and are inherent ina signifi cant part of male burials. Th e presence of “professional” weapons (shields) and equestrian equipment (spurs)in the burials clearly indicates that among the Aestii there were people who were profi cient in this equipment. Th espread of the fashion for belts, dating back to the late Roman military tradition, as well as the presence of spurs inburials, may indicate the emergence of a “military” culture, which resembles German culture in its external features.Maybe it is worth talking about the beginning of the formation of a permanent contingent of professional soldiers(squads)? At the same time, according to a number of signs, the burials of the leaders, most likely performing militaryfunctions, are distinguished, that in the burial inventory is emphasized by the presence of prestigious weaponsand horse gear, drinking horns and the burial of two or more horses.; Аннотация. Abstract

International audience; Big fingered fibulae of the East German tradition, such as Archar-Histria type, are addressed in this article. In the late phase of the Great Migration Period, they spread throughout the East Roman Empire, south of the Danube, as well as in the Crimea. These fibulae belong to the East German tradition of women's costume and date from the second half of the 5th — the beginning of the 6th centuries. Most likely, they spread from the northern part of the Balkan Peninsula along with migrations of the Goths to the West and the East. Perhaps, the finds of such fibulae in the Crimea (Luchistoe, Artek, Kerch) reflect one of the Gothic migrations from the Balkans, not recorded by written sources.; Рассматриваются большие пальчатые фибулы восточногерманской традиции типа Арчар-Истрия. В поздней фазе эпохи Великого переселения народов они распространяются на территории Восточно-Римской империи, к югу от Дуная, а также в Крыму. Эти фибулы принадлежат восточногерманской традиции женского костюма и датируются второй половиной V — началом VI вв. Скорее всего, они распространяются из северной части Балканского полуострова вместе с миграциями готов на запад и на восток. Возможно, находки таких фибул в Крыму (Лучистое, Артек, Керчь) отражают одну из миграций готов с Балкан, не зафиксированную письменными источниками.

Abstract

International audience; The Hermitage silver plate no. W-1 represents Meleager and Atalanta, accompanied by two servants, at the beginning and at the successful end of the Calydonian hunt. Five stamps applied on the back of the vase allow us to date it in the first part of the reign of Heraclius (before 630).The plate can be compared with the famous David plates discovered in Cyprus, for some decoration details but also for their aim in political communication or propaganda. Heraclius — the first Roman/Byzantine basileus — probably used the Homeric myth of Meleager in order to express his ambition or pride at defeating the most terrible boar ravaging his empire — the Sassanian “Boar of the Empire”, Šahrbarāz/Šahrwarāz, military chief of Chosroes II. Moreover, the conflicts determined by the marriage of Heraclius with Martina, the daughter of his sister, in the Roman Christian society, could have been compared with the tragic myth of Meleager, who sacrificed his victory over the Calydonian boar and finally his own life in the family conflict which followed the hunt, for his love and faith towards Atalanta. Both the epic and the tragic hypostases of Meleager are well illustrated in the long Roman tradition of literary and iconographic representations, especially from the 2nd to the 5th century AD. Even if we lack literary sources confirming it, we must assume that these representations were still well known at the beginning of the 7th century. The external and internal political motivations we assume for the Hermitage plate lead us to date it around 622–624, when Heraclius and Martina (alias Meleager and Atalanta) obtained their first important victories against the Sassanians in Asia Minor.; На серебряном блюде из Эрмитажа (№ W-1) изображены Мелеагр и Аталанта в сопровождении двух слуг; изображение совмещает сцены перед началом удачной Калидонской охоты ипосле нее. International audience; The western imaginaire of most north-east parts of the known world started long before the invention of Siberia, in the 18th century. The ancient and medieval episodes of this story are represented by a series of utopias (paradisiac lands) and dystopias (infernal places), transmitted by the peoples of the northern steppes, the Iranian and Semitic populations of East, the Greeks and Romans of the West. From Homer and Aeschylus to Claudius Ptolemy and Ammianus Marcellinus, the Abioi, most righteous of men, are the bons sauvages living on the north-eastern edges of the world, from the Black Sea to the steppe beyond the Urals. In the 6th century BC, Aristeas of Proconnesos (quoted by Herodotus, Maximus of Tyre and Tzetzes) tells the mystic story of his fantastic trip to the happy people leaving beyond the northern wind, the Hyperboreans, through the lands of the Issedones and of the Arimaspi fighting the Griffins. From the 5th century BC (in the tragic verses of Aeschylus and the Orphic Argonautica), however, this land of the Rising Sun and of gold became part of the Underworld (watered by the rivers Plouton and Acheron). In early Christian times, the North (to the left of Paradise, when looking east) was transformed into a terrestrial Hell (Hieronymus, the Apocalypse of Paul), occupied by the Ten lost tribes of Israel and by the peoples of Gog and Magog. Different historical people were identified with the Biblical Gog and Magog, because of their name (Goths, Getai), geographical origin (Massagetai, Huns, Khazars, Hungarians, Turks, Tartars). The images of these peoples in Eastern and Western texts and maps are rather fantasies inspired by the fear of the apocalyptic end, rather than echoes of their historical existence. This does not mean, however, that no reliable data penetrated from the Altaic and Siberian regions to the Mediterranean in pre-modern times. Direct contacts were possible under some empires: it first happened under the Achaemenids, when information about northern shamanism, nomadic yurts and eternal snows entered the Greek literature. The long series of transfers through which the realia as well as the fictions about the north-east reached the Mediterranean is a good illustration of the cultural processes through which we made up the image of our world.

Abstract

Big fingered fibulae of the East German tradition, such as Archar-Histria type, are addressed in this article. In the late phase of the Great Migration Period, they spread throughout the East Roman Empire, south of the Danube, as well as in the Crimea. These fibulae belong to the East German tradition of women's costume and date from the second half of the 5th — the beginning of the 6th centuries. Most likely, they spread from the northern part of the Balkan Peninsula along with migrations of the Goths to the West and the East. Perhaps, the finds of such fibulae in the Crimea (Luchistoe, Artek, Kerch) reflect one of the Gothic migrations from the Balkans, not recorded by written sources., Рассматриваются большие пальчатые фибулы восточногерманской традиции типа Арчар-Истрия. В поздней фазе эпохи Великого переселения народов они распространяются на территории Восточно-Римской империи, к югу от Дуная, а также в Крыму. Эти фибулы принадлежат восточногерманской традиции женского костюма и датируются второй половиной V — началом VI вв. Скорее всего, они распространяются из северной части Балканского полуострова вместе с миграциями готов на запад и на восток. Возможно, находки таких фибул в Крыму (Лучистое, Артек, Керчь) отражают одну из миграций готов с Балкан, не зафиксированную письменными источниками.

Abstract

International audience; Some elements of material culture from the burials of the nobility of the Cimmerian Bosporus are examined, which testify to the presence of the Goths on the Cimmerian Bosporus at the beginning of the Great Migration Period. In the Cimmerian Bosporus, already in the late Roman time, East German things found in the layers of settlements and in the burials of the local population - brooches, pendants, ridges, and ceramics are well represented. The optimal date for German things in the Cimmerian Bosporus is 300 / 320 – 400 / 410. It should be noted that German things begin to fall into the burials of the higher Bosporus nobility. At the same time, German prestigious things come from crypts, without a doubt belonging to the local, «Greco-Sarmatian» funerary tradition. Therefore, it can be argued that, on the one hand, the Germans were integrated into the local aristocratic environment, and on the other, that this local aristocracy retained its social positions in the era of the migration of peoples. It can be assumed that in the middle of the 4th century the Goths seized power on the Cimmerian Bosporus, as written sources indirectly testify to.; Рассматриваются некоторые элементы материальной культуры из погребений знати, свидетельствующие о присутствии готов на Боспоре Киммерийском в начале эпохи Великого переселения народов. На Боспоре Киммерийском, уже в позднеримское время, хорошо редставлены восточногерманские вещи, найденные в слоях поселений и в погребениях местного населения, – фибулы, подвески, гребни, керамика. Оптимальная дата черняховских вещей на Боспоре Киммерийском – это 300/320–400/410 гг. Надо особо отметить, что германские вещи начинают попадать в погребения высшей боспорской знати. При этом германские престижные вещи происходят из склепов, вне всякого сомнения принадлежащих местной, «греко-сарматской» погребальной традиции. Abstract

International audience; The Hermitage silver plate no. W-1 represents Meleager and Atalanta, accompanied by two servants, at the beginning and at the successful end of the Calydonian hunt. Five stamps applied on the back of the vase allow us to date it in the first part of the reign of Heraclius (before 630).The plate can be compared with the famous David plates discovered in Cyprus, for some decoration details but also for their aim in political communication or propaganda. Heraclius — the first Roman/Byzantine basileus — probably used the Homeric myth of Meleager in order to express his ambition or pride at defeating the most terrible boar ravaging his empire — the Sassanian “Boar of the Empire”, Šahrbarāz/Šahrwarāz, military chief of Chosroes II. Moreover, the conflicts determined by the marriage of Heraclius with Martina, the daughter of his sister, in the Roman Christian society, could have been compared with the tragic myth of Meleager, who sacrificed his victory over the Calydonian boar and finally his own life in the family conflict which followed the hunt, for his love and faith towards Atalanta. Both the epic and the tragic hypostases of Meleager are well illustrated in the long Roman tradition of literary and iconographic representations, especially from the 2nd to the 5th century AD. Even if we lack literary sources confirming it, we must assume that these representations were still well known at the beginning of the 7th century. The external and internal political motivations we assume for the Hermitage plate lead us to date it around 622–624, when Heraclius and Martina (alias Meleager and Atalanta) obtained their first important victories against the Sassanians in Asia Minor.; На серебряном блюде из Эрмитажа (№ W-1) изображены Мелеагр и Аталанта в сопровождении двух слуг; изображение совмещает сцены перед началом удачной Калидонской охоты ипосле нее.
