This article examines the process of memorializing the legacy of V. I. Surikov (1848– 1916) during the pre-revolutionary and Soviet periods. As a renowned artist, he remained connected to his homeland, significantly influencing the development of artistic life in Siberia. The focus is on the involvement of staff from the Krasnoyarsk City Museum (later known as the Museum of the Yenisei Region) in preserving the artist’s heritage, as well as their activities in 1926, marking the tenth anniversary of his death. The relevance of this study is underscored not only by an interest in the life and work of this eminent artist but also by an analysis of how his remarkable persona shaped historical memory and the cultural-historical potential of the region. Utilizing a wide range of sources, the research encompasses a significant historical period and outlines, in chronological order, a series of initiatives aimed at preserving the memory of this notable figure in his native Krasnoyarsk. The article highlights the close collaboration between the Krasnoyarsk Museum and members of the Surikov family — A. I. Surikov and O. V. Konchalovskaya. The findings conclude that without the active participation of the Museum of the Yenisei Region, preserving the memory of this distinguished local figure would have been impossible. In conclusion, it is noted that the memorialization process unfolded over an extended period, and today, the artist’s name serves as a brand for Krasnoyarsk.

Introduction. The article deals with the memorialization of victims of deportations and contemporary commemoration practices witnessed in Siberian recipient society. Goals. The study attempts an insight into the deportation-related memories of recipient communities, memorialization means and trends, commemoration forms in the region’s society and cultural environment. The hypothesis is that the memorialization processes were actually (and largely) ignited among the deported peoples (and their local autonomies) by Russian government policy of the 1990s. It was the rehabilitation of Soviet ethnic deportees that triggered the memorialization movement and the emergence of related commemorations. The publication presents results of the long term research into memories of rural Siberians conducted through the methods of oral history and ethnology. Materials and methods. The study focuses on eyewitness accounts and interviews with individuals representing the once recipient communities, commemoration sites that include not only monuments to deported victims installed in the Altai but also some traces of deportations evident from folk toponymy, rural housing stock, burials across local cemeteries, and other types of ‘memory solidification’. Results and conclusions. The paper seeks to supplement the published history and historiography of deportations — largely based of the deportees’ memories and experiences — with insights into perceptions of recipient communities and Siberian cultural landscapes. Special attention is paid to certain distinguishing features of the memorialization processes and ways in places of actual residence and death of the deportees and related commemoration forms. The work also strives to reveal an actual correlation between the ‘downward’ (from government agencies) and ‘upward’ (from the public) initiatives, and specifically the contribution of rural Siberian population to the memorialization of deportations in the 1990s–2020s.

This article presents a study of the various forms of memorialization in the former USSR, tracing their roots back to ancient Russia and examining their prevalence in modern times. The article provides a detailed overview of forms of perpetuation, encompassing cultural traditions such as songs and bylinas, as well as religious buildings, memorial tablets, and memorial complexes. Technical terms are explained upon first use, and sentences are formulated with clear structure and causal connections. In contemporary times, the most prominent means of preserving historical memory are the eternal flames in urban areas, grandiloquent propaganda, and the practice of naming significant sites after the heroes of the homeland such as airports, squares, and roads.

Introduction. The article describes two equestrian expeditions undertaken in May and July 2022 to celebrate the 80th anniversary of earliest battles for the Don attended by the 100th Kalmyk Cavalry Division. The expeditions are viewed as commemorative practices to have facilitated further memorialization of the ethnic military unit’s heroic deeds. Materials and methods. The study employs a variety of general scientific and special research techniques, including the genetic method in history, participant observations, and interviews. The work analyzes monographs and articles dealing with the 110th Cavalry Division, interviews with expedition attendees, and published media materials. Results. The paper begins with a historical review of the 110th Kalmyk Cavalry Division and describes the struggle for its historical memory. This is followed by insights into the two equestrian expeditions to have commemorated the 80th anniversary of the unit’s earliest hostilities attended. The first expedition was held on Malye Derbety – Elista route (over 200 km long), lasted for seven days, and was culminated by a ceremonial march along Elista streets on 9 May. This involved a total of approximately thirty individuals, including one young woman and five children, and was largely a preparatory arrangement to identify and settle some potential logistic and technical problems. The second expedition was organized on route Malye Derbety – Razdorskaya (over 500 km long) in July 2022 and lasted for fourteen days. The group included seventeen male individuals dressed in 1942 uniforms of Red Army cavalrymen and equipped with blank WWII firearms. The expedition was to primarily pass through Rostov Oblast and ended in Razdorskaya on 23 July during an interregional Cossack song contest. Horse riders to have attended both the expeditions would participate in public meetings and concerts to narrate about heroic deeds performed by soldiers of the 110th Kalmyk Cavalry Division. So, the early 3rd millennium equestrian tours have proved an ingenious form of patriotic propaganda and shall be long remembered — like the delivered history of the ethnic military unit proper — by participants of corresponding events. Conclusions. The arranged equestrian expeditions have served an efficient tool to memorialize heroic past of the 110th Kalmyk Cavalry Division both across Kalmykia and Rostov Oblast.

The monograph under review is a successful attempt to reconstruct the place of Sevastopol in the cultural memory of the Soviet period by means of in-depth analysis of the system of discourse related to the history of this city, “places of memory,” and commemorative practices (with special attention to the celebration of historical anniversaries). The authors managed to create a holistic image of how the main stages in the history of the “City of Russian Glory” together with the related narratives and personalities were included in the general context of the Soviet politics of history and are presented in the collective consciousness. To achieve the purpose of the study, they gave a detailed description of numerous memorial constructions, museum expositions, works of fine art, musical works, scientific and popular-science literature, memoirs and fiction, theatrical productions, documentaries and feature films – all the things that determined general visual and discourse content of the collective memory of the past in the context of the 20th century. The monograph under review is of great significance for Russian memory studies and is recommended to those who are interested in the history of Sevastopol and engaged in memory studies, new cultural history, symbolic policy, and discourse studies. At the same time, despite the variety of the topics raised and the depth of the analysis conducted, there remains a broad heuristic field for new studies devoted to the legendary “City of Russian Glory” in domestic memorial culture and historical memory.

In this work, from the point of view of historical and cultural studies, the issue of memorialization in Omsk in memory of Admiral A. V. Kolchak is analyzed. This question is considered from the standpoint of modern political history of the national and local levels in relation to the development of history as a science and the process of forming the historical memory of the Civil War. The role of specific people who influenced the course of these phenomena in Omsk is highlighted. According to the authors, the example of Omsk clearly shows that sharp controversy and an ambiguous assessment of the events of the Civil War remains in modern Russian society

The article was submitted 15.11.2021; approved after reviewing 30.11.2021; accepted for publication 30.11.2021. 30.11.2021. The paper investigates the development of concept of authenticity in industrial cities. The author analyzes the presentation strategies pursued by the key enterprises of the Ural tube industry, as embodied in material (urban planning and industrial complexes) and verbal (historical narrative) forms. For those plants established in the 1930–1940s, namely, Pervouralsk Novotrubny and Chelyabinsk Pipe Rolling Plants, the main strategy was technological heroism associated with unique projects and recent reindustrialization. In contrast to them, the Seversky Pipe Plant, which switched to the production of tube only in the 1960s, built a representation around historical continuity in relation to the “mining civilization” of the Urals by preserving the place of historical memory — the blast furnaces of the 19th century. The author concludes that the historical differences in the narratives about enterprises affect the practices of their positioning in the urban environment, and, consequently, the very concept of authenticity, which in turn is required for the successful formation of the experience economy. The article was prepared with the support of the Russian Science Foundation, project № 22-18-00679 “Creative reindustrialization of second-tier cities in the context of digital transformation”. The article highlights some new trends in the culture of cities that have received the honorary title of the Russian Federation City of Military Glory. The experience and results of a study of the state of the sociocultural situation in Kozelsk, Kaluga Region, are revealed - the city was awarded the high 13 status of honor in 2009. It is shown that the sociological approach to studying the state of the citys cultural sphere can be applied in the practical activities of city and district administrations, cultural workers, the public and citizens in the interests of the citys development. An important role and significance in the status of the city is played by the military merits of the ancestors, which are rooted in the minds of people through their knowledge of the history of the region. The custodians of status are objects of tangible and intangible heritage. Hence, one of the driving forces for the development of the cultural environment of the city is the attitude of the population towards such objects and the interaction between different groups of residents in the process of preserving, studying and transmitting to their descendants the memory of the glorious military past of their predecessors. In May 2020 have passed 75 years since the end of the Great Patriotic War. The further the history of this fateful conflict for all mankind goes into the past, the more acute and politicized is the confrontation of different approaches to interpreting the causes and results of the war, preserving the memory of the war and its heroes. The surge of neo-Nazism in modern Europe, the destruction of monuments to soldiers of the Second World War in a number of countries of the post-Soviet space, attempts to revise the role of individuals in the history of the war prompt modern researchers to revert to the problems of preserving the collective historical memory of the Past, the formation of the historical consciousness of young people. In what forms and with what expressive means should the memory of the war be broadcast today? How to convey to the younger generation, far from the realities of that time, the scale and tragedy of the event that put the world on the brink of disaster? The article presents the interim results of the Russian-Belarusian project “Remembrance of the Great Patriotic War: directions, trends, memorialization practices in Belarus and Russia”. The authors proceed from the fact that at the present stage, when there is a generational change in the Belarusian and Russian society and the problem of alienating the collective memory from the events of the war is becoming more acute, the task of finding new forms of perpetuating the memory of the Great Patriotic War is becoming ever more urgent, more and more significant is the dialogue between representatives of the scientific and educational community. A study of state policy to preserve the historical memory of the Great Patriotic War and the practice of memorialization of the events of 1941-1945 in a comparative retrospective, it is aimed at identifying those key mechanisms that are of particular importance for the formation of memory of significant events of the Past., Issue № 2, Pages 21-28

In the late 1980s, work began to identify, study, and memorialize the mass burial sites of the victims of Soviet terror. According to official data alone, between 1918 and 1953 in Petrograd/Leningrad 58,000 people were executed for political reasons. A few sites of execution and burial have been identified so far, among which the Peter and Paul Fortress, Levashovo, and the Kovalevsky forest. This article is devoted to the history and analysis of these sites and their memorialization. In Levashovo more than 19,500 people were secretly buried, who had been executed or died in prison between 1937 and 1954. In 1989, city authorities declared this mass grave created by the NKVD the Levashovo Memorial Cemetery of the Victims of Political Repression. Since then, with the help of public organizations, more than 20 national or confessional monuments have been installed, as well as about 1000 personal memorial signs. In 2001, the society Memorial discovered the mass graves of the civil war in the Kovalevsky forest and placed a memorial sign ‘To the Victims of Red Terror’. In the Peter and Paul fortress, systematic archaeological study of the execution site near the Golovkin bastion has been under way since 2010 and has already exhumed the remains of 160 victims executed in the first years of the Soviet regime. But there is yet no agreement on the shape of a future memorial near the walls of the fortress.

Two famous battles of Alexander Nevsky were the Battle of the Neva in 1240 and the Battle on the Ice in 1242. They have a cult status in Russian history. But the battlefields had long been forgotten, and the place of Battle on the Ice is still unknown. There is a certain paradox: the memory of battles for a long time was in books, ecclesiastical texts. It was verbal, it had its visualization in the works of art, etc. But the battlefields themselves as a memory object are less important than the virtual veneration. This paradox is extremely interesting for understanding of the mechanism of formation of national historical memory. It turns out that the physical existence of the memory of the object plays a minor role, even for such seemingly obvious and important facilities like Battle of the Neva or the Battle of the Ice. The narratives, books, paintings, movies play a far greater role than the "memory space". It may not be monuments can be elsewhere. The story of the battle that has existed in the intellectual and cultural space of modern times, in the 19th and 21th centuries is much more rea for the nation than a genuine medieval history of the battle. The conversion of these events in the national memory of the characters, "the mobilization of the Middle Ages" for ideological needs is a wholly modern phenomenon., №60 (2017)
