Using immunoblotting and immunocytochemistry, the expression of hypoxia-inducible factor 1α (HIF-1α) was studied in the brain of the mitten crab Eriocheir japonica in norm and at 2, 4, 6 and 12 hours of anoxia on the model of water deprivation. In intact crabs, the number of immunopositive neurons was small, but it increased with anoxia duration. Particularly pronounced increase in the proportion of neurons with the HIF-1α expression was found in cell group 6. In group 9/11. the highest expression index was observed between 2-6 hours of anoxia. In group 17, significant changes in the proportion of immunopositive cells was observed only after 2 hours of anoxia. After 6 hours of anoxia, proportion of neurons with HIF-1α expression within all cell groups was reduced, but the reactions appeared in the blood cells. It is assumed that the increase in the proportion of immunopositive neurons and the appearance of the expression of HIF-1α in blood cells in the anoxic brain play an important role in providing compensatory and protective processes, enhancing adaptive capacity of mitten crab under the conditions of hypoxic stress.

Enzymatic preparations from king crab hepatopancreas were shown to be capable, in principle, of producing protein hydrolysates. Hydrolysis of protein-containing waste of deep-water prawn and king crab occurs most successfully at pH 8.0-8.5 and 50-55 degrees C for 5-6 h in the presence of 6 g enzyme per kg substrate. The total chemical composition of the hydrolysates, the molecular weight distributions of proteins and polypeptides, and the contents of free amino acids were studied in dry hydrolysates.

It has been shown that the compound eye of the coastal crab has one photosensitive pigment rhodopsin and screening pigments, black and orange one. The orange pigment has lambda max = 480 nm, rhodopsin in digitonin is stable towards hydroxylamin action, has lambda max = 490-495 nm and after bleaching is transformed into free retinene and opsin. The pigments with lambda max = 430 and 475 nm of the receptor part of the eye are also solubilized. These pigments are not photosensitive but they dissociate under the effect of hydroxylamine. The curye of spectral sensitivity of the coastal crab has the basic maximum at approximately 525 nm and the additional one at 450 nm, which seems to be provided by a combination of the visual pigment--rhodopsin (lambda max 500 nm) with a carotinoid filter (lambda max 480-490). Specific features of the visual system of coastal crab are discussed.

Studies have been made on the dependence of sodium, potassium, magnesium and calcium concentrations of the blood and urine on the salinity of the external milieu in the crab H. sanguineus. Effective regulation of sodium and potasssium balance at low salinities was found. Within the salinity range investigated, magnesium level in the blood is maintained at lower level as compared to that in the environment. At low salinities, regulation of potassium and sodium concentrations in the blood is monitored by extrarenal mechanisms. Uber high salinity conditions, regulation of magnesium and potassium concentrations in the blood is accomplished at the expense of the activity of antennal glands. Calcium concentration in the blood is regulated by extra-renal mechanisms. The antennal glands affect regulation of calcium balance.

DNA and RNA syntheses in the heart cells of two decapod species were investigated with the aid of electron microscopic autoradiography. Isotopes were injected in the cavity of adult animals 4 hours before fixation. 3H-thymidine labeling was found in several satellite cell nuclei and in some particular epicardial cell nuclei. None of myonuclei was labeled. 3H-uridine incorporated in all the nuclei of muscle fibers. Satellite cells were labeled with 3H-uridine very slightly, if at all. Such a peculiarity of biosynthetic processes in the decapod heart satellite cell suggests their myoblastic nature similar to that of satellite cells of somatic muscles. The active 3H-thymidine uptake by the heart satellite cells of adult animals may be accounted for by the permanent growth of the decapods through their whole life span.
