The degree of acetylation exerted only insignificant effects on the enzymatic hydrolysis of chitosan, while affecting the composition of the resulting hydrolysates and their water solubility. Chitosan with various degrees of acetylation was produced by reacetylation of the original chitosan (the solvents, methanol and 2% acetic acid, were present at a ratio of 54:51 v/v; the amount of acetic anhydride was in the range 0.1-2.0 mmol per 1 g chitosan). Hydrolysis by the enzymatic preparation Celloviridin G20x was performed at the enzyme to substrate ratio of 1:400 in sodium-acetate buffer, pH 5.2 (55 degrees C) for 1 h.

Ribonucleoside 2'- and 5'-methylthiomethyl derivatives were synthesized from selectively protected nucleosides by the action of dimethyl sulfoxide-acetic anhydride-acetic acid mixture.

Etherification of butanol by acetic anhydride in butanol-butyl acetate mixtures containing 0.09 to 3 per cent water was investigated. A method for processing the butanol-butyl acetate mixtures with the weight part of butanol up to 16 per cent by etherification of the latter with acetic anhydride was developed, the yield being 96 to 97 per cent and the weight part being at least 97.5 per cent. On the basis of the estimate of the raw material use for regeneration of butyl acetate from the butanol-butyl acetate solutions by etherification of butanol with acetic anhydride, the technical and economic advantages of the processing of such solutions by the described method were shown.

A modified procedure in developed for acetylation by means of 14C-acetic anhydride of highly purified collagen I preparations. The acetylated collagen exhibited high specific radioactivity and was effectively hydrolyzed by bacterial collagenase. The 14C-acetylated collagen was used as a radioactive marker in electrophoretic analysis of labelled proteins.

Upon modification of neurotoxin RTX-III at amino groups with [3H]acetic anhydride, four monoacetyl and four diacetyl derivatives have been obtained. Acetylation of the N-terminal amino group led to 12-fold decrease of toxicity in mice. Monoderivatives of the toxin with either Lys or two out of three C-terminal Lys residues modified showed a 2-fold drop in toxicity as compared with the native RTX-III. Diacetylation caused a 30 to 35-fold decrease in toxicity, the N-terminal amino group being modified in all the derivatives. As assessed by circular dichroism method, the modification of amino groups, except for N-terminal one, affected secondary structure of the toxin. The data suggest the N-terminal amino group to be essential for toxicity of RTX-III.
