This paper reviews the basic results of the scientific investigations of Orenburg scientific histological school which was founded by Prof. F.M. Lazarenko, on the problems of morphogenesis and regeneration, starting from the thirties of XX century till present time. The contribution of F.M. Lazarenko, Z.S. Khlystova, A.A. Stadnikov and other Orenburg scientists to the development of the problems of morphogenesis and regeneration is demonstrated.

Academician P.V. Simonov is known, first of all, as the founder of "Information theory of requirements and behaviour". He was the first, who declared that requirements are the main original source of behaviour's activity, evolution's regulator, the origin of creation and motive power of individual and collective actions of human beings and animals. In our paper we analyze some positions of Simonov's conception about "agoists" and "altruists", which has the grate practical value and are very actual today.

The paper shows the research directions of the staff of the laboratory of pathomorphology and electron microscopy, which cover the period from 1924 to the present time, which can be conventionally divided into 4 stages associated with the leading role of the laboratory's heads: Prof. V.G. Shtefko (1924-1945), Prof. V.I. Puzik (1945-1974), Prof. O.A. Uvarova (1974-1980), and Prof. V.V. Yerokhin (1980 up to the present time). The laboratory's researches are the productive path of phthisiomorphology. The tasks of the laboratory have been associated with the problems to be solved by the institute. This applies the morphology, pathogenesis, classification of tuberculosis, and changes in inflammatory reactions in response to the altered Mycobacterium tuberculosis and to specific and pathogenetic actions on tuberculosis. New living conditions give the laboratory's researchers new tasks that require their solution at a new technological level.

In this paper is presented briefly the principle stages of researches, conducted in that laboratory during 1930 - 2005 years.

The medical-and-demographic processes as a starting point for the planning of means and resources for the short- and average-term future are forecasted in the paper on the basis of long-term peculiarities of the natural-science data and with respect for the social-and-economic crisis now underway in the country.

The paper deals with the history of design and development of implanted pacemakers, emphasis is also laid on electric neuromyostimulators. Present-day problems and prospects in this area are touched upon.

The paper provides a scientific rationale for that it is necessary to improve the existing state statistic records, such as [symbol: see text] No. 125/Y "Occupational Disease or Intoxication Recording Schedule". The document fails to obtain "accumulated" data on the incidence of occupational diseases (OD), changes in the health status and working ability, to make an analysis of relationships between the working conditions and the development of OD. The "Schedule" has been improved, which records data on a patient rather than a diagnosis. The schedule is a final recording document, a sectorial register of railway occupational diseases, and it is of departmental character.

New trends in the development of the theory of functional systems proposed by P.K. Anokhin in the scientific complex P.K. Anokhin Institute--Department of Normal Physiology during the last twenty five years are regarded. It has been shown that the functional systems represent an objective reality. Holographic and informational properties of the functional systems and general principles of their interrelations in the whole organism i.e. hierarchic domination, multiparametric and successive interaction have been disclosed. Some notions about "systemo-quanta" of vital activity as discrete units of dynamic activity of functional systems have been formulated. Further developments in the systemogenesis of behavioral acts also are presented. New ideas about pacemaker mechanism of dominant biological motivations, the role of oligopeptides in the system organization of behavioral acts have been formulated. The role of early genes in formation of behavioral reactions of animals and in the mechanisms of emotional stress is shown. The role of some oligopeptides in the mechanisms of resistance to emotional stress is stated. Some devices modeling the properties of functional systems and able to assess different organism's functional systems have been developed. Practical application of the theory of functional systems is also shown in the paper.

A review of the papers published in the Journal of Higher Nervous Activity dedicated to behavioral and neurophysiological studies carried out using the genetic approach is presented. The review is based on classification, which subdivides the diversity of behavioral phenomena into three large categories: instinctive, acquired behavior, and elementary reasoning phenomena. The main contribution to these publications was made by researches at the Institute of Cytology and Genetics, Russian Academy of Sciences, Siberian Branch (Novosibirsk), Institute of Physiology, Russian Academy of Sciences (St.-Petersburg), and Department of Physiology of Higher Nervous Activity, Biological Faculty, Lomonosov State University (Moscow). The traditional lines of investigations are: behavioral and neurochemical consequences of domestication, numerous physiological correlations in rat strains selected for high and low excitability levels, and genetic studies of animal reasoning.

The specialized plague control facilities which began being founded as a system of institutions in Russia in 1897 have made a great contribution to epidemiological well-being against quarantine and particularly menacing diseases. The developmental stages of plague control service in different periods of the country's social life and its place in the general governmental preventive and antiepidemic measures are shown. The paper emphasizes that it is expedient to maintain the antiepidemic readiness of plaque control facilities due the fact that the epidemic situation is due menacing and zoonosis is expected to aggravate in the late 20th to the early 21st centuries.

The paper reviews experimental and clinical data obtained on physiology and pathology of the higher nervous system by the Laboratory founded by I. P. Pavlov during 75 years of its existence: the principle of systemic organisation of the brain structures activity, the role of separate subcortical structures in organisation of behaviour, theoretical development of experimental pathology problems, inner inhibition, the role of sympathetic nervous system in conditioning, possible neurophysiological and neurochemical mechanisms of conditioning.

Misdetection of occupational diseases in railway workers is discussed. The reason is that medical staff has poor knowledge of occupational diseases and patients with their signs and symptoms are not all registered. The paper gives scientific rationale for creating a register of occupational diseases in the system of enterprises subordinate to the Ministry of Railways.

The paper deals with the major research trends at the Laboratory since its establishment including fundamental theoretical and applied problems, perspectives and approaches to their solution.

The paper presents a review of the activities of the National Register of Typed Donors in connection with 1.5-year activity of the World Donor of Bone Marrow Association. The search for donors was performed for all European and American countries using myelotransformation from unrelated donor. Basing on I class HLA-antigen phenotyping frequency, split typing and DR-antigens, conclusions are drawn as to the condition of tissue typing by the register as a whole and for separate regions of the country. The composition and contamination with nonmonospecific sera of the National Panel of Typing Sera have been reviewed in comparison with reference panel one lambda.

The paper is concerned with the brief history of the Institute of Medical Genetics, USSR AMS. Recently it has been reorganized to the USR AMS Research Center of Medical Genetics which consists of two Institutes: the Institute of Human Genetics and the Institute of Clinical Genetics. The list of the departments and laboratories of both Institutes, their research programs and projects are summarized. The research programs are under discussion.
